The incident occurred on Monday, October 6, 2025, when a police patrol team working with Community Protection Assistants (CPAs) mounted a checkpoint along the Garu–Nakpanduri road.

According to a police statement, Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia, who speaks for the Regional Command, said the tricycle was loaded with sacks of groundnuts with passengers sitting on top. When officers signaled the rider to stop and park properly for inspection, he reportedly became aggressive, assaulted one of the officers, and fled the scene.

Investigations have since been launched, and police say efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect.

“The Command is making every effort to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law,” the statement added.

The police have appealed to residents of Garu and nearby communities to assist with information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest.

IGP clarifies status of officer who assaulted journalist at Ablekuma North https://www.adomonline.com/igp-clarifies-status-of-officer-who-assaulted-journalist-at-ablekuma-north/ Thu, 21 Aug 2025 08:28:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569558 Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has clarified that the police officer who assaulted a journalist during the Ablekuma North rerun has been interdicted, not transferred as speculated.

Addressing executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at a meeting in Accra, the IGP stressed that the Service moved swiftly to remove the officer from duty while internal and external processes were set in motion.

“Within the shortest possible time, we withdrew this policeman, and also what we did was that we had to interdict him. When you are interdicted, your uniform is taken away from you, and you cannot go back to work.

“There is a rumour going around that we transferred the policeman from where he is to another police station, which is never true,” Dr. Yohuno explained.

He revealed that the Police Professional Standards Bureau had completed investigations into the officer’s conduct and submitted a report, paving the way for disciplinary proceedings.

“That investigation has been completed and handed over to me. So it means that a service enquiry is going to be conducted into his conduct and then the appropriate sanction will follow,” he said.

Dr. Yohuno also disclosed that the matter had been referred to the Attorney-General (AG) for advice, noting that clearance had been given for the officer to face court in addition to internal disciplinary action.

“We have asked that the AG should advise us on the way to handle him. The AG has also given us the green light for the police officer to go before court. That is the procedure for handling, especially a senior police officer at that level,” he stated.

The IGP assured that the disciplinary process would be thorough, fair, and in line with police procedures, underscoring the Service’s commitment to accountability.

Christian Tetteh Yohuno also confirmed that eight people have been arrested in connection with the violent incidents recorded during the Ablekuma North by-election.

Speaking during a meeting between the Police leadership and executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the IGP said the suspects are being processed and will soon face the law.
