The speed ramps were installed by residents in response to the alarming number of pedestrian fatalities on the highway, including the recent death of a 7-year-old pupil who was killed by a speeding vehicle.

This tragic incident was the sixth reported case on the highway, prompting the community to take matters into their own hands.

The youth contributed money to buy cement, which they used to construct the speed ramps.

However, the police deemed the installation of the speed ramps illegal and attempted to remove them, leading to a violent confrontation.

The youth are adamant that they will not allow the police to remove the speed ramps unless they refund the money they used to buy the cement.

In an interview with Adom News, the disgruntled youth argued that they took the initiative to protect their community and will not back down.

Nana Oteng Adjei, Committee Chairman of Assin Brofoyedru, although supporting the action of the youth, called on the Ghana Highway Authorities to intervene and ensure the installation of ramps to prevent further loss of life.

The community insists that something needs to be done to address the reckless driving on their highways.

The group’s action is to demand accountability and the recovery of funds allegedly misappropriated in questionable transactions.

The group said their action has been prompted by opaque deals, including the US$34.9 million Ambulance Spare Parts contract, the GRA-SML deal, and expenditures related to the All-African Games.

Emphasising the need to restore public confidence, the members are calling for a thorough investigation into these transactions to ensure that public funds were used appropriately.

They are also demanding full disclosure of the expenditure for the 2023 All-African Games.
