The AC Milan player, 28, successfully kept out a penalty from Poland’s Robert Lewandowski but the referee ordered it to be retaken because the keeper had strayed off his line before the ball was kicked.

Lewandowski, who used a stuttered run-up for both penalties, scored the second one to earn Poland a 1-1 draw and ensure France only finished second in Group D.

A post on Maignan’s Instagram was headlined “as the attacker begins his 87th feint in his run-up,” in reference to the incident.

He also joked: “New Ifab rules for penalties in 2026: Goalkeepers must have their backs turned at the time of the shot. In case of a save, an indirect free-kick.”

Maignan included a link to a story from 2023 about new rules from football’s law-makers Ifab, stating that goalkeepers are not allowed to do anything that “unfairly distracts the kicker”, such as touching the posts or crossbar.

They were already required to have “at least part of one foot touching, in line with, or behind, the goalline” when the ball is kicked.

Penalty takers are allowed to feint their run-up, but cannot feint taking the kick once the run-up is complete.

Maignan, who has 19 caps, is playing in his first major tournament for France after long-time number one Hugo Lloris retired after the 2022 World Cup.

Their last-16 match will take place in Dusseldorf on Monday, with their opponents to be confirmed after Wednesday’s final group games.

Poland on brink of Euros exit after defeat by Austria https://www.adomonline.com/poland-on-brink-of-euros-exit-after-defeat-by-austria/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 19:29:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2411828 Late goals by Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic gave Austria a hard-fought win over Poland and boosted their hopes of reaching the last 16 at Euro 2024.

With both teams losing their opening matches in Group D, to France and the Netherlands, they came to Berlin knowing that another defeat would put them on the brink of elimination.

The high stakes gave the encounter the feel of a knockout tie, with both sets of fans creating a noisy atmosphere at the Olympiastadion, matched by a frenetic tempo on the pitch.

It was Austria who struck first, when Gernot Trauner rose at the near post to head home Phillipp Mwene’s cross.

Poland were struggling to get out of their own half at that point but quickly improved and began pushing for an equaliser.

It arrived after 30 minutes, when a cross from the right was not properly cleared, and although Jan Bednarek’s shot was blocked, Krzysztof Piatek was first to the rebound to fire low into the net.

Clear chances were at a premium after that, even when Poland’s talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski belatedly emerged off the bench, but as the game entered the final stages, it was Austria who found the inspiration they needed.

Arnautovic’s dummy allowed Baumgartner time and space to advance to the edge of the area, before he coolly slotted past Wojciech Szczesny.

Austria’s victory was sealed a few minutes later. With Poland pouring forward in search of an equaliser, Marcel Sabitzer ran clear and although he was brought down by Szczesny, Arnautovic converted the resulting penalty.

Euro 2024: Weghorst scores late Netherlands winner against Poland https://www.adomonline.com/euro-2024-weghorst-scores-late-netherlands-winner-against-poland/ Sun, 16 Jun 2024 18:35:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2409613 Substitute Wout Weghorst swept in a late winner two minutes after coming on as former champions the Netherlands began their Euro 2024 campaign with victory against Poland at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion.

In the hours before kick-off a man was shot by police close to where fans had been gathering in the city, but the game went ahead and delivered an entertaining encounter.

Poland were without their all-time top scorer Robert Lewandowski, out with a thigh injury, but put that blow behind them to stun the Dutch early on when Adam Buksa headed home.

The Netherlands had been the dominant side but missed a number of chances before Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo equalised when his deflected shot flew past Wojciech Szczesny.

The Dutch continued to create opportunities and Gakpo should have got his second before the break but sent Nathan Ake’s pullback over from close range.

Ronald Koeman’s side continued to dominate after the break and Szczesny denied Denzel Dumfries, before exciting youngster Xavi Simons drove an effort wide after being set up by Gakpo.

But just as it looked like they would have to settle for a draw, Burnley striker Weghorst – introduced in the 81st minute – snatched the win with a close-range finish moments after coming on.

It is a big win for the Netherlands with France up next for them in Group D on Friday, while Poland face Austria on the same day.

Lewandowski to miss Poland’s Euro 2024 opener https://www.adomonline.com/lewandowski-to-miss-polands-euro-2024-opener/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 12:07:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407700 Poland striker Robert Lewandowski will miss his side’s opening Euro 2024 game against the Netherlands on Sunday because of a thigh injury.

The 35-year-old sustained the injury in a 2-1 win against Turkey on Monday as both sides played their final warm-up game before the tournament.

Lewandowski, who plays for Barcelona, came off after 33 minutes.

Poland play Austria in their second game on 21 June before their final Group D game against France on 25 June.

“Lewandowski suffered a rupture of the biceps femoris muscle, which will exclude him from the first match of the tournament,” said a Poland statement.

Defender Pawel Dawidowicz and striker Karol Swiderski also suffered injuries but should “return to full training within three to four days”.

Poland appoint ex-Portugal boss Fernando Santos as head coach https://www.adomonline.com/poland-appoint-ex-portugal-boss-fernando-santos-as-head-coach/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 16:24:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2208399 Former Portugal boss Fernando Santos has been appointed as the new head coach of Poland.

Steven Gerrard had reportedly been linked to the job after the former England midfielder was sacked by Aston Villa back in October.

Santos led Portugal to victory at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League but quit after their exit in the World Cup quarter-finals at the hands of Morocco.

“It is an honour to continue my work as a trainer here,” the 68-year-old said.

Cezary Kulesza, head of the Polish Football Federation, said “we have chosen the best” and “the choice was difficult”, as he tasked Santos with qualifying for the 2024 European Championship in Germany.

Santos previously managed Greece from 2010-2014 and led them to the Euros and World Cup, where they exited at the quarter-finals and round of 16 respectively.

2022 World Cup: Mbappe and Giroud score as France beat Poland to book quarterfinal spot https://www.adomonline.com/2022-world-cup-mbappe-and-giroud-score-as-france-beat-poland-to-book-quarterfinal-spot/ Sun, 04 Dec 2022 21:31:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2191585
Olivier Giroud became France’s all-time leading goalscorer as the World Cup holders coasted past Poland to reach the quarter-finals.

The AC Milan striker scored his 52nd goal for France to claim the country’s outright record, surpassing the great Thierry Henry.

The historic goal came on the stroke of half-time after Giroud controlled Kylian Mbappe’s pass before converting low into the net beyond the reach of Wojciech Szczesny.

But having provided the assist for the first goal, the brilliant Mbappe turned on the style by scoring two fabulous strikes in the second half.

He hit a powerful drive into the roof of the net from 16 yards for his first and curled home a wonderful second in injury time to take the lead in the Golden Boot race with five goals.

Didier Deschamps’ side had been left frustrated up until the opener and could well have fallen behind.

Poland’s best opening in the first half came when the ball dropped for Piotr Zielinski in the centre of the penalty area, but his strike was straight at Hugo Lloris.

Robert Lewandowski did manage a consolation for the Poles, rolling in a penalty with the last kick of the game.

England and Senegal meet on Sunday (19:00 GMT) for the right to play France in next Saturday’s quarter-final.

2022 World Cup: Argentina top group as Poland through on goal difference https://www.adomonline.com/2022-world-cup-argentina-top-group-as-poland-through-on-goal-difference/ Wed, 30 Nov 2022 21:25:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2190367 Argentina completed the turnaround from the shock opening World Cup loss to Saudi Arabia by qualifying for the last 16 in impressive style against Poland – who went through on goal difference having finished level on points with Mexico.

Lionel Messi was the catalyst for the crucial win against Mexico that got Argentina’s campaign back on track after their opening defeat to Saudi Arabia, and he was instrumental again as they illustrated why they were regarded as one of the tournament favourites, before a second-round match against Australia.

Poland were set to progress on the Fifa Fair Play rule for having fewer yellow cards than Mexico – until Saudi Arabia pulled one back deep into stoppage time in their 2-1 loss to the Concacaf side – and will now face France after surviving an incredibly dramatic finale where another goal for Argentina or Mexico would have knocked them out.

Argentina ran out comfortable winners with second-half goals from Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister and Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, but the game still held real drama and jeopardy in the closing stages as Poland knew another goal conceded, or another goal for Mexico against the Saudis, would send them out on goal difference.

Argentina dominated throughout but had to wait until after the break to make the breakthrough as Messi saw a first-half penalty saved by Poland keeper Wojciech Szczesny after the pair had collided in an aerial challenge, a harsh award after a video assistant referee consultation.

Mac Allister gave Argentina the lead they deserved when he swept home Nahuel Molina’s cross a minute after the break and Alvarez sealed victory with a fine finish into the top corner in the 67th minute.

Lewandowski scores first World Cup goal in Poland win over Saudi Arabia https://www.adomonline.com/lewandowski-scores-first-world-cup-goal-in-poland-win-over-saudi-arabia/ Sat, 26 Nov 2022 15:22:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2188665 Robert Lewandowski scored his first World Cup goal as Poland earned a crucial victory over Saudi Arabia that leaves Group C wide open.

The Barcelona striker capitalised on an error by Saudi Arabia midfielder Abdelulelah Al Malki before sending a composed finish past onrushing goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais.

Lewandowski was visibly emotional after ending a run of four World Cup games without finding the net.

Piotr Zielinski had given Poland a first-half lead from Lewandowski’s cutback, but Saudi Arabia were awarded a penalty five minutes later for Krystian Bielik’s foul on Saleh Al Shehri.

Wojciech Szczesny kept out Feras Al Brikan’s effort before producing a sensational one-handed stop to prevent Mohammed Al Burayk from burying the rebound.

Saud Abdulhamid was denied by Sczcesny and Al Brikan shot over the bar in the second half, while Arkadiusz Milik and Lewandowski were both denied by the woodwork as Poland sought to double their lead on the counter-attack.

Lewandowski’s late strike ended Saudi Arabia’s hopes of building on Tuesday’s remarkable victory over Argentina and boosts Poland’s hopes of reaching the last 16 for the first time since 1986, when they were beaten 4-0 by Brazil in the first knockout round.

Czeslaw Michniewicz’s team play Argentina in their final Group C game on Wednesday, while Saudi Arabia face Mexico at the same time.

Lewandowski to wear Shevchenko’s Ukraine armband at World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/lewandowski-to-wear-shevchenkos-ukraine-armband-at-world-cup/ Wed, 21 Sep 2022 18:20:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2164783 Poland captain Robert Lewandowski has pledged to wear Ukrainian colours on his sleeve at the World Cup to show solidarity with the war-torn country after getting a special blue and yellow armband from Andriy Shevchenko.

The Barcelona striker met former Ukraine captain and coach Shevchenko at Warsaw’s national stadium to collect the armband which he will wear in Qatar to symbolically represent Ukraine, who failed to qualify for the tournament.

In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine on what Moscow calls a “special military operation” to “disarm” Kyiv, purge it of “nationalists” and halt NATO expansion.

“I am going to wear Ukraine’s colours at the Qatar World Cup,” Lewandowski said. “I’ll wear Shevchenko’s armband at the World Cup in November as a reminder that the people of Ukraine are not alone and remain in our thoughts.

“Being here with Andriy means a lot to me.”

Former Chelsea and AC Milan striker Shevchenko, who played for Ukraine 111 times scoring 48 goals and represented Dynamo Kyiv before playing abroad, has been raising funds to rebuild his country following the invasion.

“I want to thank Lewandowski for this act of solidarity and for all his work on behalf of my country,” Shevchenko said.

Gazprom halts gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria as Russia accused of blackmail https://www.adomonline.com/gazprom-halts-gas-supply-to-poland-and-bulgaria-as-russia-accused-of-blackmail/ Wed, 27 Apr 2022 13:06:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2109228 Poland and Bulgaria have accused Moscow of “blackmail” after the Russian energy giant Gazprom said it had cut off gas exports to the countries.

Poland’s deputy foreign minister, Marcin Przydacz, told the BBC that Russia was seeking to “foster divisions” between Western allies.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the move showed Russia’s “unreliability” as an energy supplier.

It follows Poland and Bulgaria’s refusal to pay for gas in roubles.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin decreed that all energy payments must be made in the Russian currency.

The move, which was designed to shore up the faltering currency which has been battered by Western sanctions, has been fiercely resisted by European nations.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Gazprom said it had “completely suspended gas supplies” to Poland and Bulgaria in line with the decree issued by Mr Putin.

The company also warned the countries – which are transit states for Russian gas – that any unauthorised withdrawal of gas intended for other European nations would see supplies reduced by an equivalent amount.

Polish state gas company PGNiG confirmed that Gazprom’s supplies to the country had been halted and warned that it reserved “the right to seek compensation” and would use “all available contractual and legal means to do so”.

PGNiG bought 53% of its gas imports from Gazprom in the first quarter of this year, but Warsaw has said it can get gas from other sources. It described the suspension as a breach of contract, adding that the company would take steps to reinstate the gas supply.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said the country was reviewing all of its contracts with Gazprom, including for transit of Russian gas to Serbia and Hungary, emphasising that “one-sided blackmail was not acceptable”.

Bulgarian Energy Minister Alexander Nikolov said Russia was using gas as a “political and economic weapon in the current war”.

Sofia, which relies on Gazprom for more than 90% of its gas supply, said overnight it had taken steps to find alternative sources but no restrictions on gas consumption were currently required.

A host of Western leaders condemned Gazprom’s move on Wednesday morning.

UK Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab told Sky News the decision to cut off gas supplies would have “a very damaging effect on Russia”.

He added that the decision would further isolate Russia and lead to it becoming “an economic pariah”.

In a statement, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Gazprom’s move was “unjustified and unacceptable”, and argued that the decision showed “once again the unreliability of Russia as a gas supplier”.

She added that the bloc was “prepared for this scenario” and that European leaders have been working to “ensure alternative deliveries and the best possible storage levels across the EU”.

Ahead of Gazprom’s move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff accused Russia of “beginning the gas blackmail of Europe”.

Andriy Yermak said that Moscow was seeking to use energy resources as a “weapon” and called on the EU to “impose an embargo on energy resources, depriving the Russians of their energy weapons”.

But Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the Duma – the lower house of Russia’s parliament – praised Gazprom’s move and urged it to take similar action against other “unfriendly” countries.

Warsaw said it had “taken some decisions many years ago to prepare for such a situation” and PGNiG said its underground gas storage was almost 80% full and, with summer approaching, demand was lower.

Europe depends on Russia for more than a third of its gas needs and Gazprom holds a monopoly on pipeline supplies in Russia.

While the EU has been firm that it will not comply with Mr Putin’s demands that payments be made in roubles, several European nations, including Slovakia and Hungary have reached workaround deals with Gazprom.

The countries will pay into a euro-denominated account with Gazprombank, a subsidiary of the energy giant, which in turn will deposit the amount in roubles.

Russia cuts off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria https://www.adomonline.com/russia-cuts-off-gas-supplies-to-poland-and-bulgaria/ Wed, 27 Apr 2022 08:12:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2109128 The Russian energy giant, Gazprom says it has cut off all gas deliveries to both Bulgaria and Poland after both countries refused to start paying for the supplies in roubles.

Earlier, both Polish and Bulgarian energy providers said they had received official notices from the Russian gas supplier that deliveries were due to be cut.

Gazprom’s announcement comes after some confusion earlier this morning, when data showed gas supplies into Poland through Belarus temporarily reduced to zero before resuming.

Bulgaria’s gas network had also said the country was still receiving Russian gas as of this morning.

We are yet to see any data of gas volumes into Poland or Bulgaria since Gazprom’s announcement just now.

Both countries have refused to pay in roubles – the Russian currency – as demanded by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

PGNiG bought 53% of its gas imports from Gazprom in the first quarter of this year, but Warsaw says it can get gas from other sources.

It described the suspension as a breach of contract, adding that the company would take steps to reinstate the gas supply.

Bulgaria, which relies on Gazprom for more than 90% of its gas supply, also said it had taken steps to find alternative sources but no restrictions on gas consumption were currently required.

The country’s energy ministry said Bulgaria had fulfilled its obligations under the current contract with Gazprom and made all required payments.

It added that the new payment system proposed by Russia was in breach of the existing contract.
