He stated that NAP is a key part of President John Mahama and the NDC’s Resetting Agenda, which focuses on job creation and skills development as sustainable solutions to rising youth unemployment.

The appeal came during an event in the Nkwanta North District, where 30 apprentices and six master craft persons received training kits to support their apprenticeship activities.

The beneficiaries, training under six master craft persons, were given knitting and industrial sewing machines, hairdressers’ dryers, welding shields, hair rollers, and other accessories to help kick-start their training.

Mampah explained that the kits are intended to enhance the quality of training, motivate participants, and equip them with the essential tools needed to learn effectively and achieve self-reliance.

He added that beneficiaries will undergo a validation process to eliminate fraudulent entries and ensure accountability, emphasizing that transparency is vital for the programme’s credibility and success.

Highlighting the importance of skills development, Mampah said practical skills empower youth, increase employability, and enable beneficiaries to create jobs in their communities.

Several master craft persons and apprentices who received the items expressed gratitude to the government, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.

They pledged to remain dedicated to their training and make the most of the opportunity to build sustainable livelihoods.

Nkwanta South MCE appeals to Health Minister for renovation of health facilities in Oti Region https://www.adomonline.com/nkwanta-south-mce-appeals-to-health-minister-for-renovation-of-health-facilities-in-oti-region/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 19:18:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626744 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South in the Oti Region, Joseph Antwi Awal, has appealed to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to renovate government hospital facilities in the area to give them a facelift.

According to him, the district and municipal government hospitals in the region have not undergone any major renovation since their construction, leaving the structures visibly old and unattractive to both patients and visitors.

The MCE made the appeal when the Health Minister paid a working visit to the Oti Region, where he interacted with government workers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs), and traditional authorities at Dambai in the Krachi East Municipality.

Mr Awal noted that the lack of regular maintenance has left some hospital facilities in a deteriorated state, posing potential risks to patients seeking medical care.

He also appealed to the Minister to consider employing casual workers who have served in the hospitals for many years, stressing that doing so would help strengthen staff capacity. He acknowledged the dedication of these workers, noting that they have played a critical role in maintaining and supporting various hospital facilities.

The Dean of MDCEs in the Oti Region, Prosper Addo, also supported the call for the employment of the casual workers, stating that their continued service has contributed significantly to the smooth running of health facilities in the region. He expressed confidence that formalising their employment would help improve the quality of healthcare delivery.

Addressing chiefs and residents at Dambai, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh expressed concern about the deteriorating state of government health facilities, describing the situation as alarming.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Health would soon roll out a new policy that will allocate 20 per cent of hospitals’ Internally Generated Funds (IGF) towards maintenance and renovation works.

The Minister emphasised that the policy is aimed at transforming the poor state of government hospital facilities across the country and ensuring improved healthcare delivery nationwide.

Only a few of 25 doctors posted to Oti Region report for duty https://www.adomonline.com/only-a-few-of-25-doctors-posted-to-oti-region-report-for-duty/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 12:23:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626545 The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed concern over the low reporting rate of medical doctors posted to the Oti Region, revealing that only a handful of the 25 doctors deployed have reported for duty.

Speaking during a working visit to the region, Mr Akandoh described the situation as worrying, particularly as several health facilities are operating without a single doctor. He dismissed suggestions that postings to rural and underserved areas amount to punishment, stressing that such deployments are essential to achieving equitable healthcare delivery across the country.

According to the Minister, the Ministry’s deployment policy is guided by need, with priority given to communities facing critical healthcare shortages. He emphasized that no exceptions would be made outside the established deployment process.

Mr Akandoh also called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to help improve accommodation and provide incentives to attract and retain medical professionals.

He further raised concerns about health indicators in the Oti Region, describing it as one of the most deprived areas in terms of healthcare outcomes nationwide.

As part of the visit, the Minister inspected the site for the proposed Oti Regional Hospital and urged the Regional Coordinating Council to expedite all land documentation to enable construction to commence within the year. He also visited the Dambai Polyclinic, where he encouraged health workers to remain committed to providing essential services to the people.

Foreign Affairs Minister commissions passport application centre in Oti region https://www.adomonline.com/foreign-affairs-minister-commissions-passport-application-centre-in-oti-region/ Mon, 29 Dec 2025 16:54:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2614537 The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has commissioned the new Passport Application Centre (PAC) in Dambai, the capital of Oti Region, making government services more accessible to residents.

During the ceremony on Monday, December 29, 2025, in Dambai, he emphasized that development should not be confined to specific areas but should reach every part of the country so that all Ghanaians can feel included in the nation’s progress.

He mentioned that under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, no region would be left behind.

“The government aims that by the end of December 2025, every region in Ghana will have a Passport Application Centre,” he stated.

The Minister highlighted that community participation was vital to the project’s success.

“There was complete community ownership in this project,” he said.

He warned against attempts by foreigners to acquire Ghanaian passports, describing it as a criminal offense.

He stressed that, given the Oti Region’s borders with neighboring countries, heavy security will be maintained at the center to ensure applicants are aware that measures are in place to prevent fraud.

“We are ahead of those who try to acquire Ghanaian passports illegally; we have retrained all passport application staff and adopted stricter vetting procedures,” he affirmed.

He further explained that significant reforms have been introduced to streamline the passport application process, including a new policy where applicants will no longer need to return to the center to pick up their passports.

The minister reaffirmed his dedication to national development, ensuring that every Ghanaian feels part of the country’s progress, and the opening of the PAC office is a testament to this commitment.

He called on residents of the region to take ownership of the facility and avoid any actions that could undermine its purpose.

The Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, praised the initiative and described the opening of the application center as a sign of the government’s responsiveness and hope for the people, rather than just a formality.

He pointed out that for years, residents of Oti Region had to travel long distances to access passport services in Ho, Volta Region, or other nearby areas such as Tamale in the Northern Region, which involved costs and inconvenience.

He noted that establishing the new passport center in Dambai offers relief, dignity, and renewed hope to local residents.

He expressed confidence that the new facility will improve efficiency, reduce travel burdens, combat middleman activities, and encouraged residents to use the center for their passport needs.

Weeds overrun Agenda 111 hospital projects in Oti Region https://www.adomonline.com/weeds-overrun-agenda-111-hospital-projects-in-oti-region/ Sun, 02 Nov 2025 16:52:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2595278 The Agenda 111 project, launched by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to expand healthcare infrastructure nationwide, is facing serious setbacks in the Oti Region, with weeds overtaking several construction sites.

A visit by Adom News to sites in Jasikan, Kadjebi, Krachi Nchumuru, and Nkwanta North revealed halted progress, with many areas largely abandoned and covered in dense vegetation.

The Agenda 111 initiative, one of Ghana’s largest healthcare infrastructure projects, aims to build 111 hospitals in districts lacking adequate medical facilities. Launched with high expectations, the program was intended to improve access to healthcare services and enhance the quality of life for millions of Ghanaians.

However, in the Oti Region, enthusiasm for the project appears to be fading. Once-promising sites designated for modern, well-equipped hospitals now show signs of neglect, with rusting construction equipment and overgrown weeds.

Residents have expressed disappointment over the stalled construction, noting that traveling long distances to reach healthcare facilities remains a significant challenge.

“We were hopeful when the government announced this project, but now our hopes are dashed as the sites deteriorate,” community members told Adom News.

Regional authorities and project stakeholders have yet to comment on the delays, and the reasons for the stalled progress remain unclear, with speculation about funding and logistical challenges circulating locally.

Residents are calling for urgent intervention from both the government and project stakeholders to revive the Agenda 111 initiative, warning that without renewed focus, the vision of improved healthcare infrastructure in the Oti Region risks being overshadowed by overgrown weeds and neglect.

The initiative is designed to provide essential irrigation support, enabling farmers to cultivate a wider variety of crops and increase yields. Targeted crops include tomatoes, okra, cabbage, and carrots, all vital to strengthening Ghana’s food supply.

During the handover ceremony, Minister Gyapong emphasised the importance of responsible management of the equipment. He urged farmers, cooperatives, and local authorities to use the machines effectively to maximize agricultural output, ensuring the region fully benefits from the investment.

“The government remains committed to supporting our farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture. I personally understand the challenges of farming and want to see our farmers succeed,” he said.

Prosper Addo, Municipal Chief Executive for Krachi West, commended the efforts of the Minister of Agriculture and the Oti Regional Minister, pledging that Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) would actively supervise the proper use of the machines by cooperative groups. He also highlighted the Oti River as a key resource that can further boost agricultural production and national food supply.

This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to empowering farmers and fostering sustainable agricultural practices across the Oti Region.

Volta and Oti TEWU chapters join strike action  https://www.adomonline.com/volta-and-oti-tewu-chapters-join-strike-action/ Sat, 20 Sep 2025 08:44:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580768 The Volta and Oti Regions Chapter of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has joined in the nationwide strike action in demand for improved working conditions for non-teaching staff.

This was in solidarity with the directive by the national leadership for them to lay down their tools to impress on the government to do the needful.

The leadership lamented the continuous neglect of the demands of non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service, Universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board for better conditions of service.

Addressing the press in Ho, the Internal Relations Officer of TEWU Volta and Oti Regions Chapter, Ruth Baido, explained that the neglect was evident in the delay in signing conditions of service, approving allowances, and promotions for the members.

She said that several promises made to them by the government regarding their demands have been unfulfilled, though the union committed to dialogue with its social partners.

In light of this, she said the association decided to embark on the strike on November 19, 2025, until further notice.

“The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC has exercised patience and shown commitment to dialogue with our social partners. Unfortunately, the issues that affect our members remain unresolved, and promises made to us have been left unfulfilled.”

“This persistent neglect is nothing short of discrimination and unfair labour practice which both the 1992 Constitution and the Labour Act, Act 651, frown upon.”

“It is for this reason that, effective today, 19th September 2025, TEWU of TUC declares a nationwide strike with immediate effect, all non-teaching staff of GES, Public and Technical Universities, and staff of Ghana Library Authority and Ghana Museums and Monuments Board across the country are directed to stay away from work until further notice. Our demands are clear and justifiable,” she said.

She demanded immediate action on the signing of the proposed conditions of service and approval of allowances, adding that their employers must attach some urgency to their promotion issues.

“TEWU demands immediate signing of the conditions of service for TEWU of TUC (Gh) and all Junior Staff of Public and Technical Universities. Staff of the Ghana Library Authority
Ghana Museums and Monument Board.”

“Inclusion of GES, non-teaching staff in the payment of Continuous Professional Development Allowance, effective September 2025, and resolution of all Promotion Grievance in the GES.

“Government, particularly the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission must conclude and sign all Conditions of Service without further delays or excuses”, she listed.

Madam Baido clarified that the strike action was not targeted at the students “but against an unfair system that continuously undermines the dignity and rights of TEWU members”, directing all TEWU members “to stay at home in solidarity until further notice.”

Oti Region: Man shot dead in Keri https://www.adomonline.com/oti-region-man-shot-dead-in-keri/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 16:23:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579724 A man was shot dead on his farm at Keri in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in the latest incident of violence in the area.

The Assembly Member for the Keri-Odomi Electoral Area, Madam Juliana Awasan, confirmed the death of the victim, identified as Sammy Kentenso, to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

The killing has heightened security concerns in the municipality, which has a long history of violent clashes among the Adele, Challa, and Akyode ethnic groups over land disputes and traditional festivities.

In November 2023, armed assailants opened fire at the Nkwanta central market, killing at least six people and injuring several others. A subsequent clash in January 2024 claimed 17 lives during a traditional festival.

In response to the recurring violence, successive regional ministers, including the current Oti Regional Minister, Mr. John Kwadwo Gyapong, have deployed security personnel to investigate the attacks and engage local chiefs and opinion leaders on peacebuilding measures.

A curfew has been in place in Nkwanta township since November 2023. Residents have been urged by government and security authorities to exercise restraint, lay down arms, and resort to non-violent means of resolving disputes.

There is also a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons within Nkwanta and its environs. Security agencies have warned that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.

Meanwhile, security forces are maintaining surveillance in the area to ensure safety and restore calm.

Typhoid fever cases in Oti Region: Krachi East residents appeal for hospital https://www.adomonline.com/typhoid-fever-cases-in-oti-region-krachi-east-residents-appeal-for-hospital/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 15:49:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572188 The Oti Region is grappling with a severe surge in typhoid fever, with about 20,000 cases reported in the first half of 2025.

The alarming situation has prompted a joint appeal from the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Sarfo Nketia, and residents for the establishment of a dedicated hospital to tackle the outbreak and provide timely medical care.

Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella typhi, is often linked to poor sanitation and contaminated water. In Dambai, the regional capital, over 5,000 cases have already been recorded. Residents are largely dependent on unsafe water sources from the Oti River due to the lack of clean water supply.

Adom News observed poor waste disposal and unhygienic practices by some food vendors, which are fuelling the spread of the disease. The absence of proper sanitation facilities and indiscriminate wastewater disposal have further heightened the risks of waterborne infections.

“Our health facilities are overstretched, and we need a dedicated hospital to ensure our people receive timely care,” MCE Nketia said.

Health experts warn that without urgent interventions, the outbreak could worsen. Public health campaigns on hygiene, waste management, and access to safe water are already underway, with sanitation by-laws set to be enforced against offenders.

Some residents of Dambai expressed hope that with government and health agency support, the crisis would be brought under control to safeguard lives.

GHS responds to typhoid surge in Oti Region https://www.adomonline.com/ghs-responds-to-typhoid-surge-in-oti-region/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 14:51:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572175 The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a surge in Typhoid Fever cases in parts of the Oti Region, particularly in the Biakoye, Krachi East, Krachi West, and Krachi Nchumuru districts.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 28, 2025, the Service said it is working with the Oti Regional Coordinating Council and the Ministry of Health to contain the situation.

A National Case Management Rapid Response Team has been deployed to support regional health officials in assessing and managing the outbreak.

Typhoid fever, caused by the Salmonella Typhi bacteria, spreads through contaminated food and water. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, sore throat, and abdominal pain, sometimes accompanied by diarrhoea.

The GHS has urged the public to take preventive measures such as boiling drinking water, practicing hand hygiene, avoiding open defecation, and ensuring proper food preparation.

It also encouraged community clean-up campaigns to reduce the risk of further spread.

The Service said further details will be provided after its initial assessment.

No deaths reported from typhoid outbreak so far – Oti Health Director [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/no-deaths-reported-from-typhoid-outbreak-so-far-oti-health-director/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 12:04:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571712 The Oti Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Kofi Amo-Kodieh, has stated that there have been no confirmed deaths from the recent typhoid outbreak in the region.

He attributed the absence of fatalities to timely education on the disease and prompt reporting by patients to health facilities.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Amo-Kodieh said:

“So far, we have no record of anyone dying from this outbreak. Our health education campaigns have helped people seek care on time, which is crucial in managing typhoid.”

Asked about reports suggesting that lives have been lost, he clarified.

“As a medical professional, when someone dies, I rely on the official medical cause of death. I have not received any information confirming that anyone has died from this outbreak.”

Health Director on Oti region typhoid death

His comments come after the Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, indicated that the surge in typhoid cases has claimed the lives of some prominent figures, including a traditional leader and a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Dambai.

Mr. Gyapong described the situation in the regional capital as “bad” and “scary,” warning that the disease is spreading rapidly.

Responding to these concerns, Dr. Amo-Kodieh urged caution in attributing deaths to typhoid without proper medical confirmation.

He stated, “People may assume a death is caused by typhoid, but the only way to know the exact cause is through a medical certificate of cause of death. Until that is confirmed, we cannot say for certain.”

I was treated for typhoid just last week – Oti Regional Minister sounds alarm over dire health situation https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-treated-for-typhoid-just-last-week-oti-regional-minister-sounds-alarm-over-dire-health-situation/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 12:03:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571711 The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has revealed that he was recently diagnosed with typhoid, highlighting a growing health crisis in the region.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Gyapong disclosed that he had never contracted typhoid until he assumed office and relocated to Dambai. He fell seriously ill last week, requiring a doctor to stay with him for three days to administer treatment.

“This situation is very worrying. Since I was born, I have never been diagnosed with typhoid. But after settling in Dambai as Regional Minister, I was diagnosed just last week,” he lamented.

The Minister stressed that his personal ordeal reflects a broader health emergency in Oti.

He revealed that typhoid cases have surged dramatically in recent years—from 19,943 cases in 2021 to 47,217 in 2024. In just the first half of 2025, the region has already recorded 22,216 confirmed cases.

He also recounted the tragic deaths of two Municipal Chief Executives in 2022 and 2023 due to typhoid. “Just the day after a recent programme, a prominent chief in Dambai lost his life to the disease before he could be rushed to the hospital,” he said.

Mr. Gyapong attributed the crisis to environmental challenges and poor access to basic social amenities. Many communities in Oti lack clean drinking water, hospitals, toilets, and other essential infrastructure, leaving residents vulnerable to preventable diseases.

“The reality is that people in this region are deprived of safe water and basic facilities, and this is putting our lives at risk,” he stressed, urging urgent interventions to address the situation.

Typhoid outbreak kills chief and ex-MCE in Dambai https://www.adomonline.com/typhoid-outbreak-kills-chief-and-ex-mce-in-dambai/ Tue, 26 Aug 2025 15:11:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571348 The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has revealed that the surge in typhoid cases in the region has claimed the lives of key figures, including a traditional leader and a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Dambai.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Tuesday, August 26, Mr Gyapong described the situation in the regional capital as “bad” and “scary,” warning that the disease is spreading rapidly and taking lives.

“Just to even mention what happened to us yesterday (Monday, August 25), one of our chiefs, Asafoatse of Dambai Traditional Council, we lost him because of typhoid. So many people have lost their lives. As for politicians, most of them even died. The former Chief Executive of Dambai died out of typhoid,” he disclosed.

His revelation comes on the back of a Public Health Department report indicating that 10,233 typhoid cases have been recorded in the Oti Region since January 2025.

Mr Gyapong blamed the crisis on the absence of a hospital in the regional capital and poor sanitation practices, particularly along the Oti Lake.

Health officials say two out of every twenty residents in the region have been affected by the disease, prompting calls for urgent intervention to improve sanitation and healthcare access.

Oti Region records 10,233 typhoid cases in first half of 2025 https://www.adomonline.com/oti-region-records-10233-typhoid-cases-in-first-half-of-2025/ Mon, 25 Aug 2025 16:09:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570949 The Oti Region has recorded 10,233 confirmed cases of typhoid fever in the first and second quarters of 2025, sparking serious public health concerns.

The Regional Health Directorate says the alarming figures highlight the urgent need for improved sanitation and hygiene, as the disease is primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water.

Typhoid fever, caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi, is strongly linked to poor sanitation and unsafe water sources. Regional Environmental Health Officer, Cynthia Sekyere, described the rising number of cases as worrying, noting that infections have surged compared to previous years.

Health officials attribute the increase to inadequate sanitation facilities, poor waste management, and limited access to clean drinking water—conditions that create a fertile environment for the spread of the disease.

In response, the Oti Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with environmental health officers, has inaugurated a sanitation task force to tackle the root causes of the outbreak.

Sekyere explained that the task force will implement sanitation programs such as the construction of waste disposal systems, the provision of safe water sources, and intensified public education. She added that community involvement will be central, with residents encouraged to take part in sanitation drives and educational campaigns.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Krachi West and Dean of MMDCEs in the Oti Region, Prosper Addo, also expressed concern about the impact of the outbreak on vulnerable groups.

He pledged that municipal and district assemblies will roll out initiatives to curb the spread, while stressing the need for residents’ active participation.

“We can only win this fight if communities themselves adopt good sanitation and hygiene practices,” Addo urged.

Oti Region inaugurates Regional Sanitation Taskforce https://www.adomonline.com/oti-region-inaugurates-regional-sanitation-taskforce/ Wed, 20 Aug 2025 15:18:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569352 As part of an initiative to enhance public health and environmental sustainability, the Oti Region has inaugurated a Regional Sanitation Taskforce in collaboration with environmental health officers.

The event, themed “Strengthening Sanitation Law Enforcement for a Cleaner and Healthier Oti Region,” was led by Oti Regional Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong and marks a proactive approach to addressing pressing sanitation challenges in the region.

This initiative aligns with President Mahama’s agenda, “Resetting the Country,” which emphasizes renewed focus on development, inclusivity, and sustainability.

In his address, the minister underscored the importance of sanitation in promoting public health and community well-being. He urged stakeholders, including Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives as well as Coordinating Directors, to support and collaborate with the taskforce.

The key objectives of the taskforce are to:

  1. Strengthen sanitation law enforcement and compliance

  2. Improve waste management and disposal practices

  3. Enhance public education and awareness of sanitation and hygiene

  4. Promote community-led initiatives and participation

“Sanitation should be a communal priority,” the minister said, encouraging residents to take ownership of their surroundings by actively participating in cleanliness initiatives.

Comprising environmental health officers and community leaders, the taskforce will tackle issues such as waste management, open defecation, and water quality. It will also launch educational campaigns to raise awareness about hygiene and encourage active citizen participation.

“An educated community is a clean community,” the minister reiterated, stressing the need for outreach programs to inform citizens about the benefits of proper sanitation.

Regional Environmental Health Officer Cynthia Sekyere also urged residents to support the initiative to make Oti one of Ghana’s cleanest regions. She warned that poor sanitation leads to challenges such as choked drains, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, open defecation, and public health crises.

Confident about the initiative’s impact, she expressed optimism that the taskforce would help address these issues significantly.

The inauguration of the sanitation taskforce underscores the region’s commitment to enforcing sanitation laws, protecting public health, and promoting a culture of cleanliness and accountability.

Nkwanta North chiefs call on Oti Minister, leverage for development https://www.adomonline.com/nkwanta-north-chiefs-call-on-oti-minister-leverage-for-development/ Sat, 31 May 2025 12:39:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2540502

In an important initiative aimed at promoting development in the Nkwanta North District, traditional leaders led by Ubor Konja Tassan VI have paid a courtesy visit to Oti Regional Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong.

The meeting provided a platform for the traditional leaders to introduce themselves, discuss pressing community issues, and seek collaborative efforts for sustainable development.

During the visit, the chiefs expressed their gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his visionary leadership and the diverse developmental projects he has initiated.

Speaking on behalf of the chiefs, Ubor Konja Tassan highlighted several critical areas requiring immediate attention, with road infrastructure being the top priority.

He noted that the condition of the roads has severely hindered economic activities and access to essential services in the district.

The Nkwanta-Damanko stretch of the Eastern Corridor, he remarked, becomes a swimming pool during the rainy season and turns into a dusty road in the dry season, contributing to health hazards such as respiratory problems.

The chief emphasized the necessity of completing these road projects, which he believes are vital for improving connectivity and facilitating trade.

Improved roads would not only ease transportation but also attract investment, ultimately benefiting the local economy.

Another significant issue raised during the meeting was the completion of Agenda 111, a government initiative designed to enhance healthcare infrastructure in the area.

Ubor Konja expressed concerns about the stalled progress of this project, which he believes is crucial for ensuring residents have access to quality healthcare services.

He urged the Oti Regional Minister to advocate for expedited work on the health facility to better meet the community’s needs.

Additionally, water supply was a key topic of discussion.

The chief called for the implementation of sustainable water projects to address the recurring water shortages faced by the communities.

Access to clean and safe drinking water is essential for public health and overall well-being, and the chiefs are determined to collaborate with the government to find viable solutions.

In the area of electricity, the chief lamented the persistent power outages in the district, citing issues of low voltage that negatively impact businesses and daily life.

Oti Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong welcomed the chiefs’ concerns and assured them of the government’s commitment to addressing these issues.

He underscored the importance of collaboration between traditional leaders and government officials in driving development initiatives.

The minister appealed to the traditional leaders to collaborate and support government for the needed development.

The call was made during the 2025 May Day celebration held at Chinderi in the Krachi Nchumuru district, amid growing dissatisfaction with current employment terms.

CLOSAG members argue that existing conditions are not only inadequate but also fail to motivate workers to perform at their best. They have called for a comprehensive review of these conditions to ensure that employees feel valued and supported in their roles.

Key demands include better salaries, improved working environments, enhanced job security, and the introduction of incentive packages aimed at retaining skilled workers in the public sector. They expressed concern over the rapid wealth accumulation of politicians while in office and suggested that attractive incentives could help address this issue.

The proposed incentive packages could include bonuses, professional development opportunities, and other benefits to reward current employees and attract new talent to public service.

Rev. Henry Owoo, the Oti Regional Coordinating Director, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to address these concerns and ensure public sector workers are properly compensated. He also encouraged government workers to consider postings in the Oti Region, assuring them that measures would be taken to improve motivation in the area.

The chief director remains hopeful that the government will take these concerns seriously and implement meaningful changes to improve the working conditions of public servants in the Oti Region and beyond.

Oti Region’s iron ore exploration poised for major growth https://www.adomonline.com/oti-regions-iron-ore-exploration-poised-for-major-growth/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 09:34:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525857 Exploration for iron ore in Ghana’s Oti Region is showing strong potential, with early data suggesting the deposits could be commercially viable — and possibly rank among the best in West Africa.

This discovery could significantly boost Ghana’s mineral resource base and lay the groundwork for a domestic iron and steel industry.

Driven by rising global demand — projected to increase by 3% annually due to growth in construction and manufacturing — the search for iron ore is being spearheaded by the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) and its technical partner, Africa Exploration and Minerals Group (AEMG).

The exploration, which began in 2020, has been concentrated in the Gyamurume area within the Kadjebi District.

Initial findings have been encouraging, with GIISDEC reporting the discovery of oxidised iron ore showing iron oxide concentrations as high as 82%, which translates to approximately 57% iron. On average, samples contain 67% iron oxide, or about 47% iron content.

“These are just preliminary figures, but the signs are very promising,” said William Okofu Darteh, Chief Executive Officer of GIISDEC. “While we still need laboratory confirmation, the quality appears to be very competitive — even better than some deposits being mined elsewhere in Africa,” he added.

These promising results have already attracted the interest of potential investors, though GIISDEC remains focused on completing its data collection before entering negotiations.

“We are not rushing into anything. Accuracy and completeness are our priorities,” Mr. Darteh emphasized.

So far, the exploration process has included remote sensing and geophysical surveys. From an initial 54 targets, AEMG has narrowed the focus to 11 key drilling zones. Drilling began in mid-2024, and eight of the planned 30 drill holes have already been completed.

The full program covers 15 drill lines, stretching over approximately 2,500 metres, with completion expected by June 2025. A detailed resource estimate is scheduled for September 2025.

Franklin Mace, Chief Geologist at AEMG, noted that drilling has consistently intersected banded iron formations averaging 30 metres in width. Interestingly, serpentinite rocks — potential indicators of nickel — have also been found, adding unexpected value to the project.

Geological mapping has so far identified 42,000 square metres of fully oxidised ironstone and 36,000 square metres of partially oxidised deposits, stretching across an 8-kilometre belt dipping steeply eastward. Fault zones in the rock formations may ease access to the ore.

More than 100 rock samples tested by Intertek Laboratory and the University of Ghana confirm high iron content, though drilling is necessary to verify depth and continuity.

“It’s visible on the surface, but we need to confirm what lies beneath,” explained Prof. Frank Nyame, a University of Ghana lecturer and technical advisor to the project.

Once the resource estimate is complete, GIISDEC aims to leverage the data to attract investment and develop a full iron and steel production value chain. The project is expected to diversify Ghana’s economy and reduce dependence on gold and cocoa exports.

“This could be a transformative project,” Mr. Darteh stated. “By the end of September 2025, we should know the full potential, and then we can take the next big steps.”

Ghana currently holds an estimated 1.7 billion tonnes of iron ore reserves, including the Shieni deposit (1.3 billion tonnes at 33.8% Fe) and the Opon-Mansi deposit (147 million tonnes at 52.5% Fe). A US$600 million mining operation at Shieni is scheduled to begin in late 2025, with the goal of cutting down annual steel imports, which are valued at around US$900 million. The broader national strategy targets domestic iron ore processing by 2027, focusing on value addition and job creation.

Community engagement remains a key pillar of the exploration.

Osaberima Osei-Bonsu V, Paramount Chief of the Asato Traditional Area, welcomed the development, noting the structured nature of the project compared to illegal mining activities.

“We are hopeful that our people will benefit through employment and other opportunities,” he said.

Despite the region’s logistical challenges, GIISDEC continues to push forward with help from the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, consulting firm SRK, and local contractor BobJosh Drilling Company, which has supplied portable rigs suited to the area’s difficult terrain.

“We recognize the obstacles — especially with access and transport — but we’re addressing them as they arise,” Mr. Darteh concluded.

If successful, the project could become a key pillar of Ghana’s future industrial landscape.

Oti Regional Fire Service struggles as six fire tenders remain out of service https://www.adomonline.com/oti-regional-fire-service-struggles-as-six-fire-tenders-remain-out-of-service/ Thu, 27 Mar 2025 10:58:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2519402

The Oti Regional Fire Service is facing serious operational challenges as six of its eight fire tenders are currently out of service, severely limiting its capacity to respond to emergencies.

According to an Adom News report, only two fire tenders remain functional, raising concerns among officials about the service’s ability to handle major fire outbreaks.

Oti Regional Fire Commander, Prince Billy Anaglate, expressed frustration over the situation, stating that the limited resources are putting immense strain on the service.

“We are doing our best with what we have, but the reality is that we are stretched thin,” he said during a press briefing.

Beyond the mechanical issues with the fire tenders, Commander Anaglate highlighted the lack of adequate hydrants in the region, making firefighting efforts even more difficult.

“Without reliable water supply points, our firefighters face an uphill battle when responding to fires,” he lamented.

The shortage of functional fire trucks and insufficient water access have left the Oti Fire Service in a precarious situation, endangering lives and property.

Commander Anaglate has, therefore, called on authorities to take immediate action to restore the fire tenders and improve access to hydrants, stressing that the safety of the region depends on a fully equipped and responsive fire service.

Oti residents push for MMDCE elections in general polls https://www.adomonline.com/oti-residents-push-for-mmdce-elections-in-general-polls/ Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:51:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2511164 Residents of the Oti Region are calling for the inclusion of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) elections in Ghana’s general elections to enhance local governance and accountability.

This call was made during a town forum organized by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) in Dambai, the regional capital.

The forum brought together community leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations to discuss governance issues.

Speaking to Adom News, participants argued that electing MMDCEs would improve democracy at the grassroots level by ensuring that local leaders are directly accountable to the people they serve.

They expressed concerns about the current appointment system, which often creates a disconnect between local authorities and the electorate, leading to ineffective governance.

Advocates stressed that giving citizens the power to vote for their local leaders would promote transparency, responsiveness, and greater civic engagement. “Electing MMDCEs would lead to better governance, improved service delivery, and more effective solutions to community challenges,” they said.

The forum also addressed broader issues such as corruption, education, healthcare, and the high cost of political activities, all of which were seen as critical to strengthening Ghana’s democracy.

CDD Programmes Officer Frimpong Oti highlighted the importance of citizen engagement in shaping the future of local governance. “Open dialogue fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among Ghanaians,” he stated, emphasizing the need for ongoing discussions to improve governance in the region.

CDD Citizen Expectation Townhall: Council of State must be abolished – Oti residents https://www.adomonline.com/cdd-citizen-expectation-townhall-council-of-state-must-be-abolished-oti-residents/ Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:30:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2511035

Residents in the Oti Region have called for the abolition of the Council of State, citing concerns over its relevance and effectiveness in Ghana’s governance structure.

Speaking at a town hall engagement organized by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD), participants argued that the Council, established under the 1992 Constitution as an advisory body to the President, has not significantly impacted governance or enhanced democratic accountability.

“Instead of serving the people, the Council of State seems to be more of a ceremonial body,” one resident remarked.

They believe scrapping the council would streamline decision-making processes and make government more responsive to the needs of citizens.

However, the call to maintain the four-year presidential tenure was widely supported. Many residents argued that four years is enough time for a president to implement policies while ensuring accountability through regular elections.

“Four years is enough time for a president to show their capabilities. If they fail, we should have the opportunity to elect someone new,” another participant stated.

The discussions reflect a broader national debate on governance reforms, with increasing demands for transparency and efficiency in Ghana’s democratic system.

Oti’s agricultural landscape, rich in potential, has been selected as a key area for phase 1 of the irrigation projects. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) launched this initiative to boost agricultural production and enhance food security across the country.

In a meeting with chiefs at Nkonya Wurupong, Bumbula, and Bowiri Kwamekroom in the Biakoye district, the minister emphasized the transformative impact irrigation could have on agricultural productivity and regional economic growth.

This discussion came after a team from the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) inspected more than 3,000 acres of land designated for the project.

Gyapong stressed that the initiative would provide farmers with resources for year-round crop cultivation, minimizing dependency on seasonal rainfall and bolstering food security.

The government, he added, is committed to enhancing agricultural productivity through modernized irrigation systems, aiming to increase crop yields and foster sustainable livelihoods for the region’s youth.

Recognizing the critical role the youth play in shaping the future of agriculture, the minister encouraged them to explore various agricultural ventures, particularly vegetable farming, which thrives with irrigation support.

In response, the chiefs expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts in improving irrigation infrastructure.

They pledged to rally the youth to seize the opportunities the project offers and urged the minister and government to address the challenge posed by Fulani herdsmen activities in the area to ensure the project’s sustainability.

Commuters and traders in the Oti region are facing severe inconvenience as the ferry transporting passengers and goods across the Black Volta at Dambai has broken down, leaving many stranded.

The ferry broke down around 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, coinciding with market day, and has caused congestion as well as significant losses, especially for traders transporting perishable goods.

Some goods, including yams, have already spoiled due to the delay and heat.

Charles Awuranyi, the Assembly Member for the area, confirmed the situation and expressed frustration over the breakdown, noting that vehicles from the other side of the river, as well as those traveling from Accra to Dambai, are stuck.

“This is unfortunate, as traders are unable to deliver goods to their destinations. The market is in disarray, and goods are spoiling in the heat,” he said.

He appealed to the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the government to act swiftly in repairing the ferry and ensuring that such breakdowns do not cause further disruption.

The area has been relying on just one ferry after the other broke down months ago.

“We urge the VRA to ensure that the ferry issue is resolved quickly and that repairs are made before more losses occur,” Awuranyi added.

Fourteen aspirants were shortlisted for the District Chief Executive positions in the Oti Region.

However, some Konkomba youth strongly opposed the list, arguing that their tribesmen who applied were unfairly excluded.

The group, led by some executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the vetting committee led by Oti Regional Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong for not shortlisting any of the 17 Konkombas who applied for the Municipal and District Chief Executive (MDCE) positions in the region.

Addressing the press, the Nkwanta North NDC Deputy Communications Officer, Gideon Bilinyi, accused Mr. Gyapong of leading a deliberate agenda against Konkombas, citing a viral audio in which the minister allegedly expressed disapproval of appointing Konkombas to public office.

In the tape, Mr. Gyapong was reportedly heard saying, “So, when you are talking about Oti, for me, to talk about Konkombas, I will talk about Ewes. You think of the Konkombas? No, trust the Ewes because they dominate.”

This, according to the group, explains why all 17 Konkomba candidates were excluded from the MDCE shortlist.

However, another faction argued that the committee conducted a fair vetting process and gave all candidates equal opportunities before selecting the most qualified ones.

A spokesperson for this faction, Ernest Lagsah, alleged that Nkwanta North MP John Oti Bless attempted to influence the process by pushing for his preferred candidate, Anthony Kwesi Ntefui, who, according to Lagsah, performed poorly during the vetting.

“Hon. John O.K. Bless attempted to corrupt the process by compromising the standards set for the committee. He insisted that his choice, Mr. Anthony Kwesi Ntefui, who performed woefully during the process, be included in the list. However, the committee disagreed, so he resorted to inciting his supporters to accuse the Regional Minister of bias against Konkombas,” Lagsah stated at a press conference in Kpassa.

He maintained that all shortlisted candidates were qualified for the position and urged President Mahama to appoint the most suitable candidate to lead the Nkwanta North District.

“If His Excellency John Dramani Mahama finds them [shortlisted applicants] worthy, we encourage him to appoint any of them as our District Chief Executive in fulfillment of the provisions of the constitution and his promise to ensure balance in his appointments,” he added.

Mr. Lagsah acknowledged the contributions of other tribes in the Oti Region to the NDC’s victory and the election of Konkomba candidates in the parliamentary seats of Krachi Nchumuru, Krachi East, and Nkwanta North constituencies.

However, during the press conference, a violent clash erupted between the two factions. The situation was quickly brought under control by the Chief of Kpassa, Ubor Tassan Konja IV, preventing potential bloodshed.

Ubor Tassan Konja IV called for peace and urged both factions to accept whoever President Mahama appoints.

“Everyone cannot be DCE. Let us support whoever is appointed to the position. What we want is development and progress. I am pleading with you. I don’t want us to experience the repercussions of the tribal conflict in 2012. President Mahama will appoint whoever qualifies to lead us,” he stressed.

MMDCEs Appointment: Tension in Oti Region over alleged marginalisation of Konkombas https://www.adomonline.com/mmdces-appointment-tension-in-oti-region-over-alleged-marginalisation-of-konkombas/ Wed, 05 Feb 2025 13:02:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2501058 Tension is rising in the Oti Region following allegations of the marginalization of Konkombas in the appointment of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

This comes after Konkombas were reportedly excluded from the final list of nominees despite having gone through the vetting process.

Youth groups in the region are threatening action, claiming that the exclusion of Konkombas is a deliberate attempt to prevent them from serving in the John Mahama government.

Gideon Bilinyi, the Nkwanta South Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed shock that none of the 12 Konkombas who applied for MMDCE positions were shortlisted, even though they met the criteria.

He claimed, “In the recent vetting of MMDCEs for Oti Region, we had three Konkombas from Karachi West, one from Karachi Nchumuru, seven from Nkwanta North, and two from Nkwanta South. All these people never caught the eye of our Regional Chairman, who doubles as Regional Minister, to shortlist a single Konkomba.”

Bilinyi has called on President Mahama to audit the vetting process and its outcomes, urging him to intervene to avoid possible tribal conflict in the region.

He further accused Oti Regional Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong of orchestrating the exclusion of Konkombas, alleging that Gyapong had made divisive comments about the group.

Bilinyi appealed to President Mahama to revoke Gyapong’s appointment, claiming that his actions demonstrated a lack of unity and that he could not lead the region effectively.

The Nkwanta North NDC Constituency Deputy Secretary, Thomas Ntakpayor Dawuni, also expressed the youth’s frustration.

He questioned the Vetting Committee’s decision to bypass the Constituency Executives in the selection process, asking why they were not consulted to choose the best candidate for the MMDCE position.

Oti Regional Health Director warns of possible health facility closures amid Nkwanta South conflict https://www.adomonline.com/oti-regional-health-director-warns-of-possible-health-facility-closures-amid-nkwanta-south-conflict/ Wed, 22 Jan 2025 11:01:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495761 The Oti Regional Health Director, Dr. Osei Kuffour Afreh, has expressed grave concern over the safety of health workers in Nkwanta South, as escalating violence threatens the region.

He warned that health facilities might face closure if attacks on healthcare staff persist.

The ongoing conflict has led to attacks on government institutions, including the Kyabobo National Game Park, the Police FPU, and municipal health directorate vehicles. Tragically, one health worker has been confirmed dead, with others injured in the violence.

Speaking to Adom News, Dr. Kuffour highlighted the growing fear among healthcare workers, many of whom have sought refuge but continue to face threats.

He noted that sporadic attacks have damaged health directorate vehicles and endangered staff in areas such as Tuobodom.

“The safety of our dedicated workers is non-negotiable. We cannot allow them to be placed in harm’s way,” Dr. Kuffour stated.

He urged all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize peace and stability, emphasizing the critical role of healthcare in the community’s well-being.

Dr. Kuffour also commended state security agencies for their swift response, which is helping to restore calm in the area.

Despite the challenges, he reiterated the health directorate’s commitment to serving the people of Nkwanta South.

Oti region records over 10 road accident deaths from January to September this year https://www.adomonline.com/oti-region-records-over-10-road-accident-deaths-from-january-to-september-this-year/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 12:10:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486910 The Oti Region has reported 41 road crashes between January and September 2024, involving 53 vehicles.

These included 20 commercial vehicles, 10 private cars, and 23 motorcycles.

The accidents resulted in 10 deaths and 78 injuries, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year, 2023.

The Acting Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in Oti, Ms. Theresa Agyeman, attributed the rise in casualties to speeding and wrongful overtaking, particularly among motorcyclists.

August recorded the highest number of crashes with 8, while February and March had the lowest with only 2 each.

The months of April and July saw the highest fatalities, recording 3 deaths each.

Police checkpoint

The region also witnessed a sharp increase in pedestrian knockdowns.

Nine pedestrians, mostly children, were knocked down during this period, representing a 125% rise from the 4 cases recorded in 2023.

Motorcycles contributed to 43.40% of the crashes, followed by commercial vehicles at 37.74% and private vehicles at 18.87%.

Ms. Agyeman explained that the high rate of motorcycle-related accidents was due to poor regulation, lack of training, and weak enforcement of traffic laws.

To address this, she said the NRSA collaborated with the Police and engaged motorcyclists through education on the dangers of reckless riding and the importance of complying with road safety regulations, particularly helmet use.

Oti Region records over 9 road accident deaths from January to September this year

Research indicates that road crashes tend to increase during election years.

To counter this trend, Ms. Agyeman said the NRSA has taken proactive measures, including revising the road safety political code and engaging political parties to promote safer practices during campaigns.

Ms. Agyeman emphasized that the NRSA has intensified road safety campaigns on radio and sensitized political actors and their supporters about the dangers of reckless driving and riding during election periods.

The NRSA remains committed to reducing road accidents and improving road safety through collaboration, education, and enforcement.

The project comes as a relief for pupils who have long faced challenges due to inadequate facilities.

A report filed by Adom News’ Obrempongba Owusu last year disclosed that pupils of Kechiebi-Asuogya were forced to use their lesson hours to construct makeshift classrooms, often compromising their education.

The lack of proper facilities not only hindered their learning experience but also posed a safety risk.

The new classroom, funded by the Assembly Common Fund, is expected to provide a conducive environment for learning, allowing pupils to focus on their studies without the distraction of inadequate infrastructure.

During the commissioning, the MCE Felix Owusu-Gyimah emphasized the importance of education for community development.

According to him, every child deserves a safe and comfortable place to learn, and the new classroom block is a step towards achieving that goal.

The MCE noted that the new classrooms will be equipped with essential materials including desks which will enhance the overall learning experience for both pupils and teachers.

He encouraged parents and community members to take an active role in supporting the school, ensuring that the facilities are well-maintained and utilized to their fullest potential.

The headmaster, Benjamin Alhassan, on behalf of the community, expressed gratitude for the new classroom, recognizing the positive impact it will have on pupils’ academic performance.

He also commended Adom News for the comprehensive report that has yielded positive results, noting it is a dream come true as pupils will now have a proper place to learn.

2024 election: Disability inclusion project launched https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-disability-inclusion-project-launched/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 17:34:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461077 The Africa Disability Institute (ADI) supported by STAR Ghana Foundation with funding from FCDO, has launched a seven-month project, aimed at promoting inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

The event brought together stakeholders from political parties, state agencies, including the Electoral Commission, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the Department of Social Welfare, as well as CSOs and organisations of persons with disabilities.

It set the platform to discuss strategies to make the election more inclusive for voters with disabilities and other marginalised and socially excluded groups.

Participants had the opportunity to discuss various ways in addressing the systemic barriers that have historically excluded PWDs from participating fully in general elections.

Mr Charles Nyante, the Operations Manager of ADI, told Adom News that the project will be implemented in four districts in the Oti Region and six districts in the Volta Region.

He said their objective is to enhance accessibility of voting centers and materials for PWDs, and provide disability sensitive training for electoral officials in the two regions.

He said the right to participate in elections is universal, and they were committed to ensuring PWDs exercise this right without barriers.

Mr Robert Boame, the Oti Regional Director of National Commission for Civic Education ( NCCE), has pledged their commitment in intensifying public education on the inclusion of PWDs in the upcoming elections.

He said this will help to promote equal participation by all citizens, regardless of their abilities.

Mr. Nuhu Mahama, the Oti Regional Director of Electoral Commission ( EC) confirmed his readiness to work with ADI to ensure polling stations for the upcoming elections in the Oti region will be held at accessible venues for easy access by voters with disabilities, while some of the qualified PWDs are included as Polling Assistants.

He assured that provisions to be made for tactile ballots for voters with visual impairment or the blind.

He also said the Commission is working assiduously to deliver a free, fair and transparent election.

Mr Innocent Komla Agbolosu, the Oti Regional Director of Social Welfare made a heartfelt appeal to political parties contesting the upcoming elections, particularly, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP), to prioritize peace in December polls.

He urged all parties to embrace peace to help create an environment conducive for free and fair elections.

He said this was the only way to strengthen Ghana’s democracy and promote national unity.

Reverend Harry Nii Kwatei-Owoo, the Chief Director of the Oti Regional Coordinating Council (ORCC) said they will collaborate with the security agencies to provide maximum security before, during and after the elections.

This, he said, will ensure a serene atmosphere for citizens in the region to exercise their democratic rights.

ADI is a Disability Research and Policy Institute with the ultimate aim of becoming a robust disability research and policy reference point in Africa.

NGOs, government called to action for sanitary pad bank in Oti Region https://www.adomonline.com/ngos-government-called-to-action-for-sanitary-pad-bank-in-oti-region/ Wed, 29 May 2024 13:11:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2401539 The Regional Girls Education Officer in the Oti Region, Milicent Abrah Aidoo Boame, has appealed passionately to both non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the government to establish a sanitary pad bank in the region.

Milicent believes that providing free sanitary pads to young girls in the region will ensure that they have access to proper menstrual hygiene products, which will help prevent teenage pregnancies.

She made this request during the World Menstrual Day awareness event in Nkwanta South, organized by the Nkwanta South Municipal Education Directorate in collaboration with the Women And Development Project (WADEP).

She highlighted that, many girls in the region come from low-income families and cannot afford to buy sanitary pads, leading them to resort to using unhygienic materials during their periods.

By setting up a sanitary pad bank, she said young girls will be empowered to stay in school and focus on their education, rather than worrying about their menstrual hygiene.

The Regional Girls Education Officer called on NGOs and the government to work together to establish a sanitary pad bank in the Oti Region, where girls can access free or subsidized sanitary pads.

For her part, the manager of the Women and Development Project (WADEP), Irish Kophey Yoek, has expressed deep concern about the high rates of teenage pregnancies in the area.

She believes that, the lack of proper sex education and awareness among teenagers is a major contributing factor to this alarming trend.

Madam Kophey advocates for comprehensive sex education programs to be implemented in schools and communities to educate young people about the risks and consequences of early pregnancy.
