Why I wore extravagant dress to Oscars — Tems https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-wore-extravagant-dress-to-oscars-tems/ Thu, 16 Mar 2023 09:48:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2228215 Tems went all out with her 2023 Oscars outfit — and has zero regrets.

After hitting the red carpet in her opulent, stop-and-stare white Lever Couture gown, the singer-songwriter, who is the first Nigerian person to ever be nominated for an Oscar thanks to her work alongside Rihanna, Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Göransson on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit “Lift Me Up,” took her seat in the auditorium and accidentally blocked the view of those directly behind her.

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the artiste opened up about the eye-catching, meme-sparking design.

“Two years ago, I would’ve said no to this dress,” Tems (whose real name is Temilade Openiyi) said, adding, “but it’s my first Oscars — I am going to go all out. I really wanted to make the most of the day. The dress is also my way of celebrating my work and the people around me, celebrating my country, and celebrating the people that are rooting for me. This dress says, ‘Yes, yes, I am here!'”

After a photo of her sitting in the crowd went viral online, the internet was quick to comment on the spectacle — even offering up some think pieces on what the scene could mean.

While some saw the style choice as just “rude” because of it’s size, others thought that it should’ve been adjusted once she walked the carpet to respect the view of people sitting behind her, one user poking fun at the moment while still acknowledging its mass said: “LMFAO I know whoever behind Tems is heated.”

On the other hand, many respected the bold style choice. One Twitter user said they loved how “she is taking up space as a Black woman,” which is something Black women “have traditionally not had access to.”

Regardless of the takes, though, everyone — Tems included — agreed she was “here” and she “stole the show.”

In the same Harper’s Bazaar interview, the singer’s stylist, Dunsin Wright, also reflected on the magnitude and virality of the moment.

Saying, “At the start of the year, Tems said she’s entering a new era. That played on my mind as I considered the perfect outfit for the Oscars. We wanted something that felt quite delicate but powerful, something that made her feel ethereal.”

Continuing, “I had spotted Lever Couture a while ago after their fashion show in Tokyo and instantly knew I wanted to work with them. It was a bold option, but I was confident that if anyone could wear it the way it needed to be worn, it was Tems. She is so graceful and confident, and she makes every piece her own.”

The singer topped off the look with metallic silver eyeliner and bold lip liner that went well with the futuristic theme of the look. Her makeup artist Kevin Luong explained, “We wanted to enhance her natural beauty by highlighting her features and making her eyes the focal point of this glam.”

Rihanna, Tems receive first-ever Oscar nominations for Original Song in Black Panther https://www.adomonline.com/rihanna-tems-receive-first-ever-oscar-nominations-for-original-song-in-black-panther/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 23:56:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2208513 Rihanna is now a Grammy, Emmy, and Oscar-nominated artiste.

The Academy announced the 2023 nominations on January 24, and the “Anti” singer was among the bunch, snagging a best original song nod, her first one ever, for “Lift Me Up” — one of the leading songs featured on the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” soundtrack. She’s nominated for “Lift Me Up” alongside her cowriters Tems, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson.

Others nominated in the best original song category alongside the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” musical team include “Applause” by Dianne Warren from “Tell it Like a Woman”; “Hold My Hand” by Lady Gaga and Bloodpop from “Top Gun: Maverick”; “Naatu Naatu” by M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose from “RRR”; and “This Is a Life” by Ryan Lott, David Byrne, and Mitski from “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” dropped ahead of the Marvel movie’s Nov. 11 release date and was previously nominated at the 2023 Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards for the same best original song category, though it has yet to earn a trophy. However, the 95th Academy Awards, which air on March 12, could change that.

This wouldn’t be the first time Rihanna has been up for a major award. The new mom and Fenty founder — who’s also this year’s scheduled Super Bowl halftime performer — raked up eight total nominations at the 2017 Grammy Awards for her “Anti” album. She won best rap/sung performance the previous year for her “Monster” collaboration with Eminem. Her “Unapologetic” album also won best urban contemporary album at the Grammys in 2014. Elsewhere, her “Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3,” which premiered on Prime Video in 2021, won outstanding choreography for variety or reality programming at the 2022 Emmy Awards.

If Rihanna keeps this pace up, she could join the EGOT winners club.

I am going to win an Oscar in next 5 years – Actress Ama K. Abebrese [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-going-to-win-an-oscar-in-next-5-years-actress-ama-k-abebrese-video/ Tue, 20 Sep 2022 21:12:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2164588 Film producer and actress Ama K. Abebrese says she will become the first Ghanaian to win an Oscar in the next five years.

She observed that with the international feats Ghanaians in the diaspora are attaining in movie industry, she’s certain that a Ghanaian will win the prestigious award.

Speaking on ‘Xclusives’ with Noella Kharyne Yalley in Spain, she said “there are times and seasons. However, do not be surprised if an African, a Ghanaian wins an Oscar.

“It is going to happen. I am going to win an Oscar. Until it’s done, some people will not believe it,” she stressed.

She added, “Rocky Dawuni was nominated for a Grammy; other Ghanaians have also been nominated; Wizkid got nominated and won; Burna Boy also won so the truth is Africans, Ghanaians, it is possible.

“I just realised something with film – the business of film is not like music at the moment. When that changes, it will get to a point where people will start talking about it,” the actress noted.

‘Xclusives’ hosted by Noella Kharyne Yalley, brings you riveting conversations predominantly on showbiz, with guests from all walks of life including academia, politics, sports and more.

It airs on Joy Prime on Saturdays at 3pm, and on Joy News at 7:30 pm.

Oscar Pistorius hurt in prison fight https://www.adomonline.com/oscar-pistorius-hurt-prison-fight/ Wed, 13 Dec 2017 09:53:03 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=755491 Former South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been hurt in a prison brawl, less than two weeks after his sentence for the killing of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was more than doubled.
The disgraced Paralympian was allegedly involved in a fight over the use of a public phone, a prison department spokesman told the BBC.
Pistorius, jailed for 13 years and five months, sustained a bruise, he added.
No other serious injuries were reported, the spokesman said.
“It is alleged that he was involved in an altercation with another inmate over the use of a public phone in the special care unit where both offenders are detained at Attridgeville Correctional Centre,” the spokesman, Singabakho Nxumalo, added.
The department has launched an investigation, in terms of standard procedure, to “establish the facts and to ensure that appropriate action is taken as incidents of assaults are not allowed”, he said.
The brawl took place on 6 December, 10 days after South African prosecutors successfully argued Pistorius’ “shockingly light” six-year sentence should be increased.

Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day  2013
In November, the Supreme Court of Appeal gave Pistorius the minimum 15 years prescribed for murder in South Africa, less time already served.
Pistorius was initially found guilty of manslaughter after he claimed he shot Ms Steenkamp dead through a locked bathroom door having mistaken her for a burglar in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013.
But the Supreme Court of Appeal overturned the ruling in 2015, and found him guilty of murder.
The six-time Paralympic gold medallist had made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics, in 2012 in London, running on prosthetic “blades”.
He had his legs amputated below the knee as a baby.
