ORAL Crimes: Martin Kpebu chokes over whether NDC members are involved https://www.adomonline.com/oral-crimes-martin-kpebu-chokes-over-whether-ndc-members-are-involved/ Tue, 11 Feb 2025 16:49:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2503307 Private legal practitioner and member of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, Martin Kpebu, on Tuesday struggled to confirm whether persons mentioned in the report for suspected criminal and corrupt acts include members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

A report on the work of the committee was submitted to the president on Monday.

During a discussion of the report on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, host Kojo Yankson asked, “Out of the 230 cases that you reviewed, how many were against NDC personalities?”

Mr. Kpebu, unable to answer directly, hesitated before responding, “The challenge here is whether I am allowed to go into the details of the report beyond what has already been shared.”

Kojo Yankson pressed him further, saying, “We are okay if you don’t mention names. We just want to know whether any of the 230 cases you reviewed involved NDC members.”

Mr. Kpebu attempted to deflect the question by saying, “Looking at the numbers—our population, the NDC and NPP vote—it’s normal to expect that some cases would involve NDC members.”

Kojo Yankson followed up, asking, “So, there were some NDC people involved?”

“I said it’s normal to expect, Kojo,” Martin responded.

Out of the 230 cases, the ORAL Committee highlighted 36 as critical and provided details to the president. Kojo Yankson again asked how many of these 36 cases involved NDC members.

“I don’t have that offhand,” the lawyer replied.

“Was there even one that was against the NDC?” the host asked again. Mr. Kpebu, unable to provide a direct answer, replied quickly, “Kojo, same answer—some will, of course, involve NDC people.”

Mr. Kpebu, who has been vocal in his support of ORAL’s operations, emphasised that he could not speak beyond what had been presented to the president.

However, he said that if given the authority, he would be able to discuss the details of the report.

The ORAL Committee has submitted over two thousand reports to the president, detailing cases of corruption and related issues identified in the country.

Since its establishment, ORAL has faced criticism, particularly from members of the opposition, who argue that the committee lacks a legal foundation. Despite this, the committee has remained steadfast in its operations.

The cases are now with the Attorney General for investigation and possible prosecution.

Investigation into Oral report must not target only NPP members – Manasseh https://www.adomonline.com/investigation-into-oral-report-must-not-target-only-npp-members-manasseh/ Tue, 11 Feb 2025 10:14:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2503024 Investigative journalist Manasseh Awuni Azure has urged the Mahama-led administration not to target political opponents in the probe into the report by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team.

According to him, President Mahama must seek to ensure an all-inclusive investigation with a focus on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as well.

This, he noted, will clear doubts about witch-hunting and ensure the success of the committee’s work.

“The oral prosecution must not target only NPP members because there are some new appointees who may already be engaged in frivolous deals that will cost the taxpayers money. So for us to succeed, we should not seek to shield NDC members,” he cautioned.

Mr. Azure made the clarion call on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem after the committee, led by North Tongu MP and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, presented its report.

The committee, which was tasked with investigating alleged corruption and verifying claims of embezzled state resources, submitted a report with 2,417 complaints on suspected corruption activities on Monday, February 10, 2025.

After 53 days of work, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that they received 1,493 complaints through a toll-free call and 924 via emails.

Meanwhile, President John Mahama has directed the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to immediately investigate the report to facilitate the prosecution of persons found culpable.

Mahama orders A-G to immediately probe ORAL report https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-orders-a-g-to-immediately-probe-oral-report/ Mon, 10 Feb 2025 16:24:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2502756 President John Mahama has instructed the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to immediately commence investigations into corruption cases captured in the report of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) committee.

The directive was issued on Monday when the President received the report, which comprises 2,417 complaints, for onward submission to Dr. Ayine.

North Tongu MP and ORAL Chairman, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, led the team to present the findings at the Jubilee House.

Commending the committee, President Mahama described the report as a defining moment in the country’s anti-corruption efforts.

“I have handed the report to the A-G to commence immediate investigations into the cases reported. The report will be carefully studied, and where prosecution is required, it will be done without fear or favor.

“Every pesewa recovered from the operation will be reinvested in national development, emphasizing that Ghana is no longer a ground for corruption,” he stated.

Mahama further noted that the report marks a significant step in recovering looted state assets.

“The findings of this report make for sober reading, revealing the scale of financial leakages that have cost our nation dearly—resources that should have been invested in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social development.

“But they also give hope that through collective efforts, we can reclaim what is ours and deter future acts of economic sabotage,” he added.

President John Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption and protecting the public purse.

According to him, Ghana is no longer a safe haven for corruption and related activities, warning that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law.

The President issued the stern warning on Monday when the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee presented its report to him at the Jubilee House.

“For those who think they can defraud and escape justice, let this serve as a strong warning—Ghana is no longer a safe haven for corruption,” he declared.

He assured that his government stands firmly with those who uphold accountability and integrity.

“To those who stand for accountability and integrity in the rule of law, this government remains your steadfast partner in building a nation where hard work and honesty are rewarded,” he stated.

President Mahama described the committee’s work as a defining moment in Ghana’s fight against corruption and called for collective efforts to ensure its success.

“The work does not end here. The recommendations of the report will be studied carefully. This is a defining moment in our fight against corruption, and we must all play our part—media, CSOs, citizens—so that together, we can build a Ghana that is transparent and prosperous for generations to come,” he charged.

He also commended the committee for its dedication and commitment to delivering on its mandate.
