Tears and sorrow filled the air as friends, family, and fans gathered to bid farewell to Nollywood veteran and music icon, Onyeka Onwenu at her burial in Lagos.
The revered actress and singer, who passed away at the age of 72, was laid to rest amidst an outpouring of grief and tributes.
 

The service of songs was held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, where attendees gathered to pay their last respects.

The atmosphere was filled with deep emotion as mourners reminisced about Onwenu’s contributions to the entertainment industry and her impact on Nigerian culture.

Following the service, the burial took place at the Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi.

The solemn ceremony marked the final goodbye to a woman who had touched many lives through her music, acting, and activism.

The legendary star was confirmed dead on Tuesday, July 30, after she slumped at a birthday party.

She had performed for the celebrant, Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, and was returning to her seat when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Despite efforts to save her, she was later pronounced dead that same night.

The family announced this on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from the Musical Society of Nigeria, (MCSN) who paid them a condolence visit at Ikoyi, Lagos residence of the late singer.

Onwenu was a member of MCSN before her sudden demise last Tuesday after her performance at the 80th birthday party of Chief Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

Receiving the delegates led by Orits Wiliki, Chairman, Board of Trustees of MCSN, Onwenu’s sons, Abram and Tjiani expressed their intention to respect their late mother’s wishes by committing her remains to Mother Earth as soon as possible.

Though no particular date was announced, Onwenu’s sons, however, revealed that the late queen of songs will be buried before the end of this month.

According to them,  the burial arrangement will be announced in the coming days.

Meanwhile, signing the condolence register at the late singer’s home  KSA, who was overwhelmed by emotion, wrote ” Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.  Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever “

Others in the delegation include the flutist, Tee Mac, who promised to perform at the service of songs of the late singer, Kenny Ogugbe, King Sunny Ade and Mayo Ayilaran, General Manager of MCSN among others.

Sadly, she succumbed shortly after.

Onyeka Onwenu is survived by her two sons.

According to sources close to the family, Onwenu was attending the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals when the incident occurred.

After delivering a performance, Onwenu returned to her seat and suddenly slumped.

She was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

This marks a profound loss for the Nigerian music industry and her countless fans worldwide.
