The Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals (GhISEP) has called on the government to expedite ongoing efforts to pass the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill into law following the explosion at Odumasi, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region.

GhISEP has described the unfortunate incident as a stark reminder of the need to prioritize safety and environmental protection in all aspects of work and daily life in Ghana.

According to the institute, the tragedy was preventable, underscoring the need for a thorough investigation into the causes of the explosion.

In a statement, GhISEP emphasized that passing the OSH Bill would be a significant step towards fostering a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in the country.

“We therefore call on His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, to support the passage of the Bill into law and to ensure its effective implementation through government machinery,” portions of the statement read.

GhISEP further pledged its commitment to monitoring and managing high-risk areas such as mining and construction sites to prevent similar disasters.

“We have the expertise and knowledge to provide guidance and support to industries and organizations on safety and environmental best practices. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in Ghana,” the statement added.

The OSH Bill aims to improve the working environment and conditions, maintain the working capacity of employees, prevent occupational accidents and diseases, and eliminate other workplace hazards.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday, March 5, around 7 pm, affecting 30 buildings and eight shops, claiming three lives, and leaving many injured.

The fire, which broke out in stores selling dynamites and other explosives used by local miners, triggered earth-shaking blasts that damaged buildings and left dozens injured.

The exact cause remains unknown, but authorities say the driver of the first fire tender on the scene collapsed after his vehicle was caught in the impact. Another firefighter sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Ashanti Regional Minister donates to Odumase explosion victims https://www.adomonline.com/ashanti-regional-minister-donates-to-odumase-explosion-victims/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 06:46:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2512197 The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has donated money to support victims of the tragic explosion at Odumase, near Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality, which left three people dead and several others injured.

During a visit to the site, Dr. Amoakohene described the situation as alarming.

“I received briefings last night that there was an explosion here at Odumase. Preliminary information suggests that someone was selling explosives at home, and due to the rainstorm, something triggered it, leading to the explosion,” he said.

The blast destroyed 30 houses and displaced several residents. The minister assured victims of government support and directed the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide immediate relief.

“We have instructed NADMO to give us a comprehensive report on the affected households so we can determine how best to intervene,” he added.

Beyond the explosion, Dr. Amoakohene addressed concerns about a collapsing bridge in the area, reportedly weakened by mining activities.

“I have received complaints about a failing bridge. This looks like a hanging town because a mining tunnel runs through it, and the bridge is giving way. I am thankful to the leadership for closing it, and I have cautioned against the use of motorcycles and tricycles on it,” he stated.

The minister pledged to notify the Roads Minister and send engineers to assess the situation for urgent repairs.

Meanwhile, security agencies are investigating the explosion, as those responsible for selling the explosives have reportedly fled.

“No arrests have been made yet. I am told that the people operating the shop have absconded, but the police are investigating seriously. We must ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” Dr. Amoakohene said.
