Thanks for using my name to fill halls but… – Napo to OB Amponsah https://www.adomonline.com/thanks-for-using-my-name-to-fill-halls-but-napo-to-ob-amponsah/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 15:12:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526077 Running mate to the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo,” has finally responded to viral jokes made about him by comedian OB Amponsah.

During his performance at the Bukom Boxing Arena, OB Amponsah humorously addressed Napo’s controversial remarks made during the 2024 election campaign — a segment that resonated strongly with the audience at the December 21, 2024 event.

In a lighthearted reaction, Dr. Opoku Prempeh acknowledged the use of his name in the comedian’s stand-up routine.

“If somebody who is a comedian is using my name and he is filling halls, I am very happy. I thank him because he is putting my name out there for free,” he remarked.

Joking further, he added, “But I will let my lawyers write to him so that we share the proceeds, the revenue, because I am unemployed.”

One of the highlights of OB’s performance centered on Napo’s campaign statement, where he controversially claimed that no president, including Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed Ghana like President Akufo-Addo.

“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Napo declared during his unveiling in Kumasi on July 9, 2024.

That statement sparked widespread backlash, becoming a favorite subject of OB Amponsah’s recent skits, which resurfaced on social media in the last 24 hours — prompting journalists to seek Napo’s reaction during a post-NEC meeting in Accra this morning.

Meanwhile, Dr. Opoku Prempeh has dismissed suggestions that he is positioning himself for a future presidential bid in 2028.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a party engagement, he said: “Me personally, I am not running in 2028.”

He emphasized that his focus remains on ensuring party unity ahead of the December elections, describing it as his utmost priority.

I lost about GH₵40,000 from my Bukom boxing arena event – OB Amponsah https://www.adomonline.com/i-lost-about-gh%e2%82%b540000-from-my-bukom-boxing-arena-event-ob-amponsah/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 13:38:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495337 Popular Ghanaian comedian and event organizer, OB Amponsah, has made a shocking revelation about the difficulties he faces in hosting his events.

In an interview on Hitz FM’s morning show, OB revealed that he does not make a profit from his comedy events. He shared that his recent comedy show at the Bukom Boxing Arena left him in debt.

“I made a loss of about GH₵40,000,” he told the host DJ Slim.

OB, who has organized several comedy specials, including Popular But Broke at the National Theatre of Ghana, acknowledged the challenges comedians face when organizing their own shows. Despite the financial setbacks, he views the investment in his craft as valuable.

In December 2024, OB made history by filling the 4,000-capacity Bukom Boxing Arena with his 10th anniversary comedy show.

Before the show, he voiced his frustration on social media, complaining about the high tax elements on tickets sold for events. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with the Ghana Revenue Authority’s decision to place taxes on complimentary tickets, calling it unfair.

OB’s revelation sheds light on the struggles comedians in Ghana often face, where despite their popularity and talent, they struggle to make a sustainable living from their craft.

OB Amponsah fills 4,000 capacity Bukom Boxing Arena with comedy special https://www.adomonline.com/ob-amponsah-fills-4000-capacity-bukom-boxing-arena-with-comedy-special/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 14:44:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486981 Ghanaian optometrist and comedian, OB Amponsah, made history on December 21, 2024, when he filled the 4,000 capacity Bukom Boxing Arena with his 10th anniversary comedy show.

This has been described by creative industry stakeholders as an unprecedented achievement in Ghana’s comedy space because it is the first time a Ghanaian comedian has been able to fill a bigger venue for a comedy show.

According to OB Amponsah, after filling smaller spaces over the years, he was convinced that taking up the challenge of holding his 10th anniversary at much bigger place would elevate the Ghanaian comedy narrative they have been championing for the past years.

OB Amponsah had the audience in stitches with hilarious jokes. His themes ranged from politics, relationship, sex, to some outlandish subjects that cannot broach in ordinary discussions. What sets OB apart from a number of contemporaries is his boldness to traverse slippery areas of themes – and he brought that to bear in his presentation on the night.

The event also saw a number of Ghanaian comedians on stage, performing to the admiration of patrons. A lot of their comedy materials were based on the December 7 election, giving the people something they can easily relate to.

There were amazing acts by DKB, Jacinta, Ebenezer Dwomoh, Ranzy Ray, Smile, Kwaku40, Kojo Pjay, Oojoo, Papa Yaw, Putogo, Foster Romanus, Jerry Ashinyo, Kwame Obed, Canadian comedian Emerson, Miriam Kirk from the USA and Johnny Pula from Botswana.

Ghanaian comedian Lekzy DeComic put up an outstanding performance as MC of the show.

The stand-up comedian did an excellent job by keeping the audience engaged and enthralled throughout the show. His ability to handle some challenges that occurred at the beginning of the show, has earned him a resounding applause from patrons of the event.

Also in attendance were dignitaries such as David Dontoh, Ama K Abebrese, Timothy Bentum and Ken Fiati.

“I think he will take it as a joke. He is a communicator. He will understand what I really meant,” he said.

The popular comedian during a performance at this year’s edition of Decemba2Rememba made light of many things, including names and meanings as well as the impact of names on people where he mentioned that the name ‘Mahama’ is synonymous with corruption in Hausa.

He cracked ribs with that script but fell on the dagger of some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress. They described the joke as sensitive and expensive; hurled insults at him while others incited violence against him for injuring the reputation of the party’s flag-bearer.

The comedian in an interview with GhanaWeb, however, indicated that smearing the reputation of Mr Mahama with mud is the last thing on his mind.

“Sincerely, that wasn’t the intention. It was a joke that treaded on a thin line. It was not to make him unpopular,” he said. “I’m not a politician; I don’t even vote. It was a sensitive joke I told. It went down with the audience at the auditorium but later after a bit of assessment, people realised it was quite too far, it was quite an affront to the former president’s dignity. No malice intended,” he noted.

The comedian, who has entertained many Ghanaians and foreigners alike with his craft recounting his ordeal, said the attacks broke him to the extent that he contemplated calling it quits.

“It was tough,” he admitted. “There was a point I cried. The threats were crazy. I don’t know how they got my number. When they call you and they don’t get you, they text you the insults. A lot of concerns… At a point, I was scared for my [life]. But I had some NDC folks calling me that they’re trying to calm nerves. It really got to me.”
