Man jailed 3 years for sharing ex-girlfriend’s nude pictures

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced an unemployed man to three years in prison for sharing naked pictures of his ex-girlfriend with his friends on social media.

Joshua Asiedu, aka Kwame Ketewa, was also ordered to pay compensation of GH₵10,000 to the 19-year-old victim for the pain and emotional stress he caused her.

The sentence came after the court presided over by Mrs Christina Cann found Asiedu guilty of the charge of non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

Police say Asiedu shared the nude pictures of the victim on his WhatsApp status because she broke up with him.

The court, however, noted that the prosecution failed to make a prima facie case against Asiedu with respect to the threat of death and domestic violence to wit emotional abuse.

It therefore acquitted and discharged Asiedu on two offences.

In his plea for mitigation, Asiedu pleaded with the trial judge to have mercy on him saying “All the allegations against me are untrue”.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, said the complainant is a 49-year-old trader residing in Accra.

It said the victim is a 19-year-old Senior High School graduate who resides with her mother at Odorkor, Accra.

The prosecution said the convict also resides at Odorkor.

In 2018, Asiedu engaged in an illicit relationship with the victim and her father got wind of it.

Based on that, the prosecution said the victim told Asiedu that she was no longer interested in the relationship, so she broke up with him.

The prosecutor said in 2021, Asiedu, who was not happy with the victim’s action, posted her nude pictures on his WhatsApp status for public viewing.

According to him, Asiedu then shared the photos with two of the victims’ friends, Kasia and Sika.

The prosecution said thereafter, “The accused person always calls the victim to threaten her with words that he will deal with her and that if she wants to lose her life or she wants her mother to lose her, then she should play with him and that made the victim feel constantly unhappy, miserable, humiliated, ridiculed, afraid, jittery, depressed and worthless.”

It said the authorities at the victim’s school also noticed that the victim was going through emotional torture and invited her parents to the school.

The victim was also handed over to a counsellor at the school, and a report on the victim was submitted following her counselling session.

The prosecution said the complainant reported Asiedu’s conduct to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit (DOVVSU) on May 17, 2021.

It said that Asiedu fled to an unknown location after learning he was being sought by the Police.

The prosecution said on January 26, 2023, Asiedu resurfaced and was arrested.

The prosecutor stated that an investigation caution statement was obtained from him and photographs of the victim’s nude pictures were retrieved from her father’s cell phones, as well as audios of the threats, for evidential purposes.

An 18-year-old woman is threatening to commit suicide after her nude pictures was leaked on social media.
Benedicta Mensah Denkey, claimed she took the pictures playfully with one of her colleagues in school.
But the phone went missing and landed in the hands of some young boys who demanded GH₵ 5,000 as ransom.
The young lady could not raise that amount so they boys decided the leak the photos on social media.
Benedicta is now considering suicide because the shame and stigma she is facing especially in her family is too much.
“Now I am scared to go outside because the stigmatization is just too much. I am tired of this country and I think the best way to avoid everything is to take my life. I can’t tell when I will commit the act but it can be any moment” she told Adom News.

Meanwhile, Benedicta’s mother when contacted said she has not seen the pictures yet but worriedly asked her daughter to go ahead since she has nothing to do to stop her.
“I haven’t seen the pictures. I have no idea about it. I don’t think she will do it. I don’t have anything to do about it. If she will kill herself she should go ahead because I’m tired of talking to her” she said.

Actress Christabel Ekeh has revealed that she recently dropped her own nude pics online because she was the victim of blackmail and wanted to get control of her own nudity and not have it used as a weapon against her.
Ekeh spoke to Abeiku Santana on Monday and debuted this new rationale for her actions.
According to the actress, her nude pics were in the hands of someone who has been threatening to release them for a while, which has been bothering her because she was always living in fear.
Therefore, dropping the nude pics herself was a way of seizing control over the situation to show her nudity is her pride and not her shame.
“I would like everyone to know that in as much as its looks shameful or whatever, my nudity is something that I’ve come to learn its my pride and not my shame,” Ekeh told Abeiku.
“I had a group of people who have been threatening to release my nudity that I sent to someone in private,” she added.
“This thing has been something that has been boggling me for a while – hanging around my head in everything that I do.” Ekeh also strongly refuted reports that she’s mentally unstable by saying she’s of sound mind, but agreed with Abeiku that she probably needed to stay away from social media for a while.

Christabel Ekeh goes into hiding after release of her naked pictures

President of the Actors Guild of Ghana, Sammy Fiscan has said the association have tried but failed to reach actress Christabel Ekeh and her family.
According to him, the Association has the number of the actress’ mother but they have tried severally but cannot reach her. He added that the only other individual who can be reached to help the association to contact Christabel cannot be reached.
Sammy Fiscan who spoke to Accra-based Joy FM said: “We’ve been trying to reach her without success. The contact we had which was supposed to be for mother and we haven’t been able to get through to her. We seem to have hit a wall”.
Actress Christabel Ekeh posted nude photos of herself on her Instagram page. Her act raised eyebrows with people suspecting that her account had been hacked. However, the actress came to confirm that she posted those nude pictures indicating that it represented the “new” Christabel Ekeh.
Sammy indicated that the Association suspects Christabel is unstable.
He said “We are of the view that she is challenged mentally and so if we are able to get through to any of the family members especially the mother, we would be in a better position to do see what we could do”.
