Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh strongly denied any involvement in a shooting incident in Nsawam last year that left one person hospitalized.

He insisted that he has never wielded a firearm and urged the Ghana Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation.

“I have never shot a gun before. The soldiers who were protecting me only fired warning shots to disperse the crowd,” he stated.

Recalling the tense moments, he alleged that his opponents had orchestrated an attack to unseat him.

“They threw a stone at my car gate, and if not for God’s intervention, it would have hit me. The soldiers had to run for their lives,” he recounted.

Mr. Annoh-Dompreh accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of planning the chaos in an attempt to take his parliamentary seat.

“It was a well-rehearsed plan by the NDC, targeted at snatching my seat. But I stood my ground and emerged victorious,” he asserted.

Despite the challenges, he expressed confidence in the legitimacy of his victory.

“In the midst of all the attacks, I won. My savior was my pink sheet,” he said, referring to the electoral results sheet.

He further noted that although the NDC has taken the matter to court, he and his legal team have yet to be officially served with their petition.

Arrested and detained since October 31, 2018, the old man had been in prison for six years because he could not satisfy a one hundred thousand Ghana cedis bail.

At the adhoc court sitting inside the Nsawam medium security prison on Wednesday, it was revealed that state prosecutors had within the period, failed to issue advice for the case to progress.

The sitting judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo who felt empathetic towards the weak old man, was swift to discharge him.

She ruled that “since the Attorney-General is yet to issue advice on the case, and the accused person looks frail and old, he is discharged.”

Prior to him being discharged, however, the judge asked him to shake and move his hands. He was also asked to stand and take three steps forward.

Curiously though, unlike other inmates who were emotional after being discharged, John Okoe Mensah was indifferent about the fact that his liberties have been restored after close to six years of being caged.

He walked out of the adhoc court sitting as though nothing had happened.

A plier was found close to the body of the deceased.

The Police was alerted of a decomposing body by a security man, and moved to the scene to take custody of it.

The body of the man has since been deposited at the Police Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Mr Emmanuel Akinie, Accra West Regional General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in a news briefing cautioned customers to desist from interfering with electricity installations without the requisite authority from the company.

“In recent times, we have recorded incidents of theft and destruction of some of our equipment. Beyond the huge cost the company bears to replace such stolen or vandalised equipment, it also poses danger to properties, and lives of these criminals,” he said.

Mr Akinie advised all to be vigilant and report any unusual activity around ECG’s installations to the nearest ECG office or to the Police.

Four arrested for stealing railway tracks https://www.adomonline.com/four-arrested-for-stealing-railway-tracks/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 05:48:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2358769 Four suspects have been arrested over their involvement in the theft of railway tracks near Nsawam in the Eastern region.

The suspects, identified as Ibrahim Adamu, Abdul Kadril, Japharu Haruna, along with the driver of a Hyundai Mighty truck bearing registration number GS-3201-09, Stephen Tetteh Blebo, were apprehended around 8:20pm while transporting quantities of stolen railway lines.

The patrol team, stationed at Oparekrom junction, acted upon receiving credible information regarding the theft.

Upon interception, the suspects and the vehicle loaded with the stolen railway lines were swiftly brought to the station for further investigation.

The detained suspects and impounded vehicle are currently under police custody in Nsawam as investigations continue into the matter.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of railway infrastructure theft plaguing the region.

Angry residents of the Pakro community in Akuapem South in January this year intercepted a truck carrying stolen railway tracks and offloaded them in the middle of the community.

This action was taken following a meeting between the Akuapem South MCE Frank Aidoo and the community who called for their vigilance to help address the issue of railway track theft.

Subsequently, Mr. Frank Aidoo wrote a letter dated January 14, 2024, to the Ministry of Railway Development, urging urgent action to halt the looting of railway tracks.

He also notified the Eastern Regional Minister, local police, and Eastern Regional Police command to investigate and apprehend the perpetrators.

Unfortunately, the seized railway tracks disappeared.

Some residents alleged connivance of some community members and the perpetrators.

The MCE Frank Aidoo and the Police have since intensified efforts to clamp down on such criminal activities in the municipality and surrounding areas.

In a meeting with the community on Friday vehemently denied accusations of involvement in the theft of railway tracks within the municipality.

The MCE Frank Aidoo averred the allegations against him were unfounded intended to besmirch his reputation, particularly ahead of the upcoming Parliamentary primary in Akuapem South, which he is contesting.

Assembly member for Fantetown Electoral area at Pakro , Abdul Latif Saed, said the MCE had no hand in the removal and disappearance of the railway track, stating that it took the community by surprise.

Railway track theft remains a nationwide concern, with various regions, including parts of the Eastern Region, witnessing an increase in such incidents.

Korle Bu sets records straight on prison inmate’s escape https://www.adomonline.com/korle-bu-sets-records-straight-on-prison-inmates-escape/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 07:02:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2355774 The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has denied reports suggesting that a Chinese prison inmate escaped while undergoing treatment at the facility.

The inmate was at the Nsawam Prison and was serving a one-year jail term.

He allegedly feigned sickness to the extent that he needed to be taken to the hospital outside the prison walls but he escaped from the hands of the prison officers who escorted him.

The head of communications, Mustapha Salifu has admitted the suspect, Wang Xiao was at the facility for treatement.

However, Mr Salifu explained he was not in handcuffs or a prison uniform even though he had officers accompany him.

“He came to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in the company of two prison guards because of toothache. Once he got there, we observed that this patient was not handcuffed.

“He was asked to pay GHC167 for registration because he was non-Ghanaian. After that, he proceeded to the consulting room, where he was seen and assessed. He was then asked to go for an X-ray. While he was going for the X-Ray he was still not in handcuffs,” he narrated to Accra-based TV3.

According to him, Mr Wang left the hospital and promised to return because he didn’t have enough money on him to cover the expenses.

Unfortunately, he never returned until news about his escape broke out.

“After giving them the brief of the procedure, we told them it would cost GHC616. The prisoner said he did not have that much on him so he was rescheduled to report back at the hospital on Friday, February 9, but has since not returned to the hospital.

“He, however, left in the company of the prison officers who escorted him and so as far as we’re concerned, the Prison Officers left Korle Bu with the patient and headed back to Nsawam,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Prisons Service has said the incident is under investigations with leads obtained to help re-arrest the 39-year-old.

My spirit left my body – Akuapem Poloo opens up on sentencing day https://www.adomonline.com/my-spirit-left-my-body-akuapem-poloo-opens-up-on-sentencing-day/ Mon, 25 Apr 2022 14:47:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2108359 “It was shocking, I was shaking. I could not sleep during the whole period. I had become pale. On the outlook I looked okay but deep down, those around me knew I was not okay. My spirit left my body”.

These are the web of emotions actress Akuapem Poloo went through on the day she was sentenced to 90 days in the Nsawam prison.

The actress was charged with the publication of obscene materials and indecency after she posted a nude photo of herself and her son to mark his 6th birthday.

Moments after the photo was uploaded on her Instagram on the 30th of June 2020 till the point she secured bail on December 15, 2021, Poloo said she was robbed of sleep.

She told Delay during an interview that she knew her obvious fate the day before her sentencing when the judge requested a pregnancy test, and the demeanor of her lawyer thereon.

“When the judge requested for a pregnancy test, at that time I had not said I was pregnant so my lawyer mumbled under his breath. The judge also added that I should be detained after the test”.

“At that point, I wish I knew a doctor who could have forged my pregnancy test to positive for me. I don’t have any police, doctor, or friend in the services; it’s after my case that I have a lawyer.”

Speaking about her time in Nsawam prison, Akuapem Poloo said her spirit left her body and she became very pale as she stared at the huge gated building.

“I was just weak while imagining my life for the 90 days. I had grown very lean like a broom because I could not eat. They marched me to the washroom and made me squat to know if I have inserted any harmful thing there. After, they made me change my dress, took pictures, and put me in quarantine.”

“I could not eat their food, all I took was malt and sometimes a slice of fried yam. I was scared because I didn’t know what anyone had planned for me. I was helpless”.

Surprisingly, she said her cellmates she was scared of were rather very friendly people and they did their best to cheer her up by gisting her of their own experiences.

Born Rosemond Alade Brown, Akuapem Poloo said her experience has taught her that fame, though sweet, can be very dangerous when overdosed on.

This statement comes after stakeholders at Nsawam opened up on the challenges saddling health facilities in the municipality which need support.

Speaking to Joy News, the Municipal Health Director, Madam Eunice Abuaku, said that the MP for Nsawam has been supportive, yet there are other challenges that needed attention.

With an increasing population, coupled with road crashes on that stretch the health facilities readily offer the needed assistance to emergencies.

However, this usually exceeds the capacity of the health facilities.

Mr Dompreh, during a hand over ceremony of beds to 13 health facilities in the Constituency, noted that his visit to some of the facilities revealed a lack of beds, particularly in the maternity wards.

He mentioned that his group has procured some hospital equipment and supported the construction of a maternity ward at the Nsawam Government Hospital to facilitate quality health delivery.

To him, discussions on the construction of the First Christian Teaching Hospital were near conclusion with partners in the United States of America.

He was optimistic the Teaching Hospital will help reduce the pressure on existing facilities especially, emergency cases.

Madam Abuaku, meanwhile, called for effective collaboration to deal with the health needs of the people.

The protestors are against the former first lady’s alleged acquisition of a land around the Nsawam Cannery which is being released to KOANS Estates.

Led by the chiefs of Adoagyiri, Ntoaso, Owuraku and Akwamu, the protestors are demanding that government stops Mrs Agyemang-Rawlings from unlawfully taking over the lands.

The four towns have threatened to use every means to protect their properties if the government refuses to take action.

“We have been notified by one KOANS Estate that the lands in the settlement which exceeds 800 acres have been handed over to them by Nana Konadu to develop estates and we have therefore been served notice to get out of the place or come and negotiate with KOANS so that they will permit us to even stay where we are.

“Our ancestors and forefathers have lived on the land for more than 200 years and we have settled there over this period and nothing like that has happened to us,” one of the chiefs told Joy News’ Maxwell Kudekor.

According to the protestors, KOANS Estate Ltd acting on behalf of Caridem Development Company Ltd has deployed land guards to terrorize them to vacate their properties.

According to them, the Supreme Military Council compulsorily acquired their lands by Executive instrument E.I. 31 State Lands (Nsawam – Site for Pineapple Production) in 1977 with an approximate area of 635.20 acres at Nsawam in the Eastern Region.

“The law requires that if you want to use a land for anything, you go into consultations and properly settle those who are there, but nothing of that sort has happened,” the chief said.

“We will ensure that the blood that our forefathers have shed and the energy they’ve put in to put this settlement together are not destroyed just by some people’s desire. We shall not allow ourselves to be wiped out,” they declared.

Peabo explosion: I made enemies in my own party – Annor Dompreh https://www.adomonline.com/peabo-explosion-made-enemies-party-annor-dompreh/ Wed, 11 Oct 2017 13:40:53 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=568491 The Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annor Dompreh has revealed the fight for compensation for the victims of the Peabo explosion has not been rosy.

According to him, he is facing prosecution even from his own party because he is fighting to ensure those involved don’t go scot-free.

“I have suffered within my own party because of this matter. There are people who think that I’m making the new government popular” he stated on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.

Almost two years after the incident, residents of Peabo most of whom were injured have not been compensated.

The blast from a quarry site belonging to A.K.Y Mining Services Limited along the Adeiso road occurred as a result of a naked fire getting into contact with ammonium dynamite.

The devastation caused many injuries while substantial properties were lost through the accident including a 38-year-old welder, Ibrahim Mohammed, who met his untimely death when he was caught in one of those explosions.

A Ministerial Committee set up to investigate the explosion recommended a ten-year ban on the operations of A.K.Y Mining Services Limited which is still operating and those indicted are still walking scot-free.

But the Nsawam Adoagyiri MP said he is not surprised about the delay in dealing with the culprits a year after the report.

He indicated that, it took divine intervention before he got a copy of the report completed under the erstwhile Mahama government.

Hon. Annor Dompreh also said people in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) think he is being disruptive to the cause of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“People think you are making the work of the president difficult because you are continuously raising this matter” he bemoaned.

This notwithstanding, Frank Annor Dompreh said he is been able to get the President to commit to assisting the victims of the disaster.
