One dead, over 50 injured in just one week on Nkawkaw road – Fire Commander raises alarm https://www.adomonline.com/one-dead-over-50-injured-in-just-one-week-on-nkawkaw-road-fire-commander-raises-alarm/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 16:52:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566579 The Kwahu West Municipal Fire Commander, Samuel Mante, has raised serious concerns about the increasing number of accidents on the Accra–Nkawkaw–Kumasi road. In just one week, one person has died and more than 50 others have sustained injuries.

Describing the situation as alarming, Commander Mante urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially at night.

“The Accra–Nkawkaw road has long been notorious for accidents. Poor road conditions, excessive speeding, driver fatigue, and poorly maintained vehicles all contribute to the danger,” he said.

He added, “Excessive speeding on roads with poor visibility can lead to loss of control. Driving long hours without rest impairs judgment, and poorly maintained vehicles — especially those with faulty brakes or worn-out tyres — can be deadly.”

Commander Mante also advised drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, adopt defensive driving techniques, and strictly follow road safety regulations. He called for upgrades to road infrastructure, including better street lighting and improved surfaces, to reduce accidents.

Narrating one of the recent incidents in Nkawkaw, he explained how a collision occurred due to a combination of speeding and poor visibility, emphasizing the urgent need for both driver discipline and infrastructure improvements.

“Safety on this road requires collective responsibility. Drivers must act responsibly, and authorities must ensure that roads are maintained and adequately lit,” he urged.

This incident follows a similar emergency landing involving the same helicopter at Ajumako Kokoben on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The aircraft was en route to Prestea in the Western Region when the pilot was forced to divert and land at the Ajumako Kokoben Community School park around 10:30 a.m. due to bad weather.

Last Wednesday’s incident reportedly occurred about an hour before the tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed eight lives, including two ministers.

Following the latest event, Adom News’ Akwasi Dwamena reported that the aircraft belongs to Volta River Aviation.

The helicopter, which was traveling from Accra to Kumasi, was forced to land due to harsh weather conditions that severely reduced visibility.

An eyewitness, Bakira Tahiru, headmaster of New Generation School, told Adom News that the aircraft passed by the school and returned in less than three minutes, attempting to land there.

However, to ensure the safety of the students, the helicopter moved a short distance away behind the school before landing.

Mr. Tahiru disclosed that there were four people onboard, including two white men, and all escaped unhurt.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the emergency landing.

The inferno, which destroyed vehicles parked at the shop and other property running into thousands of cedis, occurred on Thursday dawn.

A nearby house was also affected.

Though the cause is yet to be established, victims who could not control their tears in an interview with Adom News‘ Akwasi Dwamena blamed the Nkawkaw Fire Service for the extent of damage.

According to the shop owners, the firefighters could not report on time because their fire tender was not functioning.

They revealed one was dispatched from Mpraeso but it was too late as the damage had been caused already.

They accused the Municipal Chief Executive, Yaw Owusu Addo, their MP; Joseph Frempong and the Reginal Fire Commander of failing to ensure the tender gets the urgent repairs it needs.

The aggrieved residents said only one fire tender serves the whole of Kwawu except for Afram Plains which has a different one.

Fuel tanker bursts into flames after accident at Nkawkaw https://www.adomonline.com/fuel-tanker-bursts-into-flames-after-accident-at-nkawkaw/ Fri, 08 Jul 2022 16:28:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2135501 A fuel tanker with registration number GT 6490-Y has burnt beyond repairs after being involved in an accident at Nkawkaw, Hotel Junction.

According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred around 4:30am when the driver failed at an attempt to climb a hill.

The fully loaded tanker entered into a muddy ditch, causing it to spark fire which later engulfed the entire vehicle.

Municipal fire commander for Kwawu West, D03 Kofi Agbortsu, said preliminary investigations indicate the fire was as a result of contact of electricity with the fuel.

Per his deduction, the tanker had connections with some electrical wires which reacted negatively and caused the explosion.

Efforts were made to quench the blaze.

He revealed that the situation was out of hand when they arrived as residents failed to call for emergency precautions, rather, they were scrambling for the car number to stake as lotto.

D03 Kofi cautioned residents to be wary as there was a likelihood the tanker could explode due to the heat.

Police, NIC impound 103 uninsured vehicles https://www.adomonline.com/police-nic-impound-103-uninsured-vehicles/ Tue, 12 Apr 2022 16:37:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2103953 The National Insurance Commission (NIC) in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Nkawkaw Divisional Police have impounded 103 vehicles without insurance.

This was during a three-day exercise from Tuesday to Thursday as part of their usual quarterly exercise to clamp down on vehicles without insurance.

The Police team was led by the Eastern Regional MTTD Commander, Chief Superintendent Stephen Ahiatafu.

Among other offences, some drivers of the impounded vehicles were without driver’s licences, others had expired licences or insurance. The operation saw 66, 30, and 7 vehicles impounded on the first, second and third day respectively.

Indiscipline
Chief Superintendent Ahiatafu lamented the level of indiscipline of drivers at Nkawkaw and other parts of the region, who according to him, know what to do but have refused to do them, posing dangers to their own lives and those of passengers.

“Most of the drivers here and other parts of the region are very indisciplined; we have been embarking on the awareness campaigns for very long and they know what to do but they are only being reluctant.

The Nkawkaw township has a lot of alternative routes so when they see the police, they dodge and use other routes because they know they are not doing the right thing. This endangers their lives and those of passengers and motorists,” he said.

He said ahead of the Kwahu Easter celebration, the police would continue to enforce the traffic regulations and deal with drivers who ply the roads without “insurance, fake insurance, expired insurance, unregistered vehicles and without drivers’ licence”.

Chief Superintendent Ahiatafu urged drivers to be very proactive and careful as the Easter festivities draw near in order to avert accidents that characterised some of these festive seasons. He appealed to long-distance drivers to take time to rest at a safe place when they are tired on the way to avoid sleeping behind the wheels which lead to accidents.

Enforcement
The Eastern Regional Manager of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Esther Konadu Asiedu said the exercise ahead of the Kwahu Easter celebration was to enforce the vehicle insurance policies to prevent and protect victims of accidents.

“The motor insurance policies help the NIC to make sure compensation is paid to accident victims by the insurance companies the vehicles subscribed to. This helps prevent and protect accident victims. With the Kwahu Easter nearing, it is important that we make sure vehicles are insured and we take out vehicles without insurance off the roads to prevent and protect passengers and drivers themselves,” she said.

She urged passengers to take advantage of the motor insurance database which allows them to check validity of a vehicle’s insurance before they jump into them using the short code *929*57# and dialing the vehicle’s registration number.

As part of the exercise, Ms Konadu Asiedu said the insurance companies within Nkawkaw were invited to instantly insure the impounded vehicles.

She urged drivers and vehicle owners who have been subjected to unfair treatment after reporting their accident claims by their insurance companies to petition the NIC to take them up and get what is due them.
