Nhyiraba Kojo still in prison – Lawyer https://www.adomonline.com/nhyiraba-kojo-still-in-prison-lawyer/ Tue, 02 May 2023 10:52:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2244718 Five days after the Sekondi Commercial Court imprisoned a popular hiplife musician, Nhyiraba Kojo, for 30 days, he is yet to be released from the Sekondi Prisons.

The musician was sentenced for contempt of court in a case filed by four residents of Fijai on noise from his nightclub.

His counsel, Philip Fiifi Buckman, says his client is having difficulties purging himself.

The lawyer, while speaking to Citi News, indicated that Nhyiraba Kojo had already carried out the demands of the court to install soundproof facilities at his NK City nightclub even before he was sent to prison.

He added that, his client could not file a report of completion at the court within time due to bureaucracy from the EPA and the Environmental Health Office of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

“What the court asked him to do with regard to the substantive matter was done but because he couldn’t meet the deadline, the court found him guilty of contempt. It has become difficult because of bureaucracy from state institutions.”

The court presided over by Justice Sedina Agbemava sentenced him to imprisonment following Nhyiraba Kojo’s failure to observe an interlocutory injunction order by the court for him to stop the noise at the nightclub, ensure soundproof installation at the NK City Nightclub and submit a report to the court.

The petitioners are Edmund Sampana Dienorng, Nicholas Imbeah and Samuel Kofi Dzukey.

Nhyiraba Kojo to be released soon – Lawyer https://www.adomonline.com/nhyiraba-kojo-to-be-released-soon-lawyer/ Sat, 29 Apr 2023 16:13:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2244200 Lawyer for Nhyiraba Kojo Philip Fiifi Buckman has indicated that his client will soon be released to reunite with his family.

Nhyiraba Kojo, a popular Hip Life musician and owner of the NK City Nightclub at Fijai in Takoradi, has been sentenced to 30 days imprisonment by a Sekondi Commercial High Court.

He was jailed on the grounds of a contempt in a case filed by four residents of Fijai over noise from his nightclub, situated in the same area.

Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa morning show, lawyer Philip Fiifi Buckman indicated that Nhyiraba Kojo complied with the initial directive of the court, asking him to reduce the noise levels of his nightclub but attempts to retrieve the needed document to serve as evidence was not successful.

“As the case was being heard, the residents brought an injunction asking the court to stop Nhyiraba Kojo from operating his nightclub, but we opposed it,” he said.

“They later agreed that the noise should be reduced within 30 days. The court also informed us to present a report indicating the noise has been reduced.

“We have worked on reducing the noise level and people can even see that most of his speakers have been removed. We were working on the official report to be presented to the court, but there were challenges in obtaining it from the Assembly. So we could not send it to the court within the 30 days given. That is why the court decided to punish him,” Mr Buckman indicated.

According to him, the court has promised to release Nhyiraba Kojo anytime the report is presented.

He adds that they are working to retrieve the report from the assembly by Tuesday.

“But the good news is that, the court is ready to release him anytime we present the report. We are busily working on it and believe it will be ready by Tuesday, and he will be released from jail. But I must tell you that Nhyiraba Kojo is not bothered because he is not in jail due to robbery or anything bad. We believe he will soon return,” he indicated.

The court presided over by Justice Sedina Agbemava who imposed the 30-day sentence said Nhyiraba Kojo had failed to comply with an interlocutory injunction order to stop noise pollution from his nightclub and install soundproofing.

The musician was found guilty of contempt by the court and ordered to serve the full 30-day sentence unless he can purge himself of the contempt.

According to the report, the case was filed by three residents of Fijai who complained about the noise emanating from the nightclub.

Despite the court order, Nhyiraba Kojo failed to comply, leading to his sentencing.

Noise pollution continues to pose a significant risk in many cities across Ghana and environmental agencies have consistently warned individuals and businesses to take steps to minimize their impact on their communities which have sometimes fallen on deaf ears.

A well-known figure in the entertainment industry in Ghana, Nhyiraba Kojo and his NK City Nightclub has carved a niche as a popular spot located at Fijai-Takoradi in the Western Region.

Counsel for the petitioners, Pamela Arvoh-Mensah of Owusu Ankomah Arvoh Mensah, Dzigba and Associates, confirmed the court’s decision and explained that Nhyiraba Kojo could avoid serving the full sentence if he complies with the court order.

Born, Rashid Joseph, the Ghanaian musician and businessman is well known for his 2011 hit song titled “Turn Around” alongside Dr Cryme.

He is a serial entrepreneur with numerous business ventures.
