Against the run of play, the visitors took the lead when they were gifted possession and Callum Hudson-Odoi fired in a shot from around 25 yards out past the returning Nick Pope.

From the rest of the half, it was one-way traffic with The Magpies scoring four goals in 11 minutes.

Lewis Miley equalised after drilling the ball beautifully in the bottom corner with his left foot.

Two minutes later, Jacob Murphy bundled the ball in from close range after a swift counter attack.

The Magpies made it 3-1 from the penalty spot when Ola Aina was penalised for handball. Isak stepped up and just did enough to score with his Panenka effort.

And the Sweden striker scored the fourth when his shot took a wicked deflection for his 50th Premier League goal.

Nuno Espirito Santo saw his side dominate the second half and reduce their deficit through goals from Nikola Milenkovic and Ryan Yates, but The Magpies hung on for victory.

Forest end Brentford’s unbeaten home record https://www.adomonline.com/forest-end-brentfords-unbeaten-home-record/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 18:03:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486504 Nottingham Forest inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Brentford as they maintained their push for a European place.

Goals from Ola Aina and Anthony Elanga, as well as some resolute defending, helped Forest to their third consecutive victory.

The result also lifts Nuno Espirito Santo’s side up to third in the table, a point above fourth-placed Arsenal, who travel to Crystal Palace later on Saturday (17:30 GMT).

Having withstood some early pressure from the hosts, Forest opened the scoring towards the end of the first period when Neco Williams got down the left and his low cross was placed into the bottom left corner by Nigeria full-back Aina.

The visitors added to their tally shortly after the break when Elanga capitalised on a mistake from Keane Lewis-Potter and drove into the penalty area before dispatching his effort past Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken into the bottom left corner.

It proved a frustrating afternoon for Brentford, who came into the contest with the best home record in the English top flight, having won seven and drawn one of their previous eight fixtures.

However, while the Bees enjoyed plenty of possession, they ultimately lacked a cutting edge in front of goal.

Mikkel Damsgaard and Yoane Wissa were both unable to convert first-half opportunities to give Thomas Frank’s side the lead and Kristoffer Ajer’s close-range effort was superbly repelled by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels as the hosts looked for a way back into the match.

They drop down a spot to 12th in the table, having lost three games in seven days.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta charged for comments after Newcastle defeat https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-manager-mikel-arteta-charged-for-comments-after-newcastle-defeat/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 02:53:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2320287 Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been charged by the Football Association for comments he made after their 1-0 defeat by Newcastle.

Arteta, 41, called the video assistant referee’s (VAR) decision to allow Newcastle’s goal “embarrassing” and a “disgrace”.

Anthony Gordon’s goal had three VAR checks and all were adjudged in Newcastle’s favour.

Arteta has until Tuesday to respond to the charge.

“It’s alleged that his comments constitute misconduct as they are insulting towards match officials and/or detrimental to the game and/or bring the game into disrepute,” the FA statement said.

Arsenal supported Arteta’s comments in a club statement, while the Spaniard later said it was his “duty” to defend the club.

The club said the refereeing was “unacceptable”, adding that players, coaches and supporters all “deserve better”.

Three areas around Gordon’s goal were checked by VAR – to see if the ball went out of play in the build-up, if there was a foul and if there was an offside.

Speaking on Match Officials Mic’d Up, a Premier League Productions programme which analyses VAR decisions from the last months, referees’ chief Howard Webb backed the decision of on-field referee Stuart Attwell and the VAR team, and the process by which they reached it.

The defeat by Newcastle ended an unbeaten Premier League start for Arsenal, who are third in the table – one point off leaders Manchester City.

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool defender charged by FA after red card against Newcastle https://www.adomonline.com/virgil-van-dijk-liverpool-defender-charged-by-fa-after-red-card-against-newcastle/ Wed, 30 Aug 2023 05:58:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2288760 Virgil van Dijk has been charged by the Football Association for acting in an “improper manner” after being sent off in Liverpool’s win at Newcastle.

The Liverpool captain was shown a straight red card in the 29th minute at St James’ Park on Sunday for fouling Newcastle forward Alexander Isak.

The defender appeared to argue with referee John Brooks while the incident was reviewed by VAR.

The FA says it is alleged Van Dijk used “abusive and/or insulting words”.

“Virgil van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August,” said the FA in a statement.

“It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute.”

The 32-year-old Netherlands centre-back, who also appeared to argue with the fourth official before making his way down the tunnel, has until Friday to respond to the charge.

Currently, Van Dijk will serve a one-match ban for the initial red card and miss Liverpool’s next game against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The charge comes after referees’ chief Howard Webb said he was “determined” officials would not “turn a blind eye” to bad behaviour from players and coaches this season.

The incident occurred three minutes after Liverpool went behind to Anthony Gordon’s opening goal and with the visitors under pressure in the game.

Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score twice late on and hand Liverpool a 2-1 victory to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

PL: Clinical Liverpool punish 10-man Newcastle United https://www.adomonline.com/pl-clinical-liverpool-punish-10-man-newcastle-united/ Sat, 18 Feb 2023 21:10:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2218497 Liverpool’s pursuit of a top-four Premier League finish gathered further momentum at the expense of Newcastle United’s similar ambitions with a crucial win at St James’ Park.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, who secured their first league win of 2023 in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Monday, took control with two early goals from Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

Newcastle’s miserable night worsened with a first-half red card for goalkeeper Nick Pope, ruling him out of next Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley.

Nunez powered home the opener from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pass after 10 minutes, then Gakpo scored for the second successive match seven minutes later, pouncing on Mohamed Salah’s piece of creation to beat Pope.

The Newcastle keeper then left referee Anthony Taylor with no option but to send him off after 22 minutes when he misjudged a dash from goal in an attempt to challenge Salah. He slipped and had to handle to stop Liverpool’s Egypt forward from racing clear.

Ironically, Pope’s replacement Martin Dubravka is cup-tied for Wembley having played for Manchester United in an earlier round, leaving former Liverpool keeper Loris Karius as the most likely contender to face Erik ten Hag’s side.

Newcastle were unable to overcome the handicap as they went down to only their second league defeat this season, the first also coming against Liverpool at Anfield in August.

It capped a disappointing build-up to Newcastle’s first Wembley final since the FA Cup in 1999, but they still showed plenty of spirit despite their numerical disadvantage, Liverpool keeper Alisson turning Allan Saint-Maximin’s shot on to the bar, while Dan Burn also rattled the woodwork with a header. The Brazilian also saved well from Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson.

Klopp will have left Tyneside highly satisfied after desperate away defeats at Brentford, Brighton and Wolverhampton Wanderers as Liverpool now stand only six points behind fourth-placed Newcastle with a game in hand.

Man murders 21-year-old ex-girlfriend, leaves her toddler son soaked in blood https://www.adomonline.com/man-murders-21-year-old-ex-girlfriend-leaves-her-toddler-son-soaked-in-blood/ Mon, 28 Mar 2022 12:08:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2096831 A man has been charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend after police found a toddler soaked in her blood at their home.

Mackenzie ‘Max’ Anderson, 21, died outside her home after an alleged domestic violence attack in the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield at about 10.40 pm on Friday.

The scene was described as being so grisly it shocked the hardened senior police officers who attended.

Tyrone Thompson, 22, was arrested at the scene and the police allege he broke into Ms Anderson’s home on Crebert Street and attacked her. He was charged with her murder on Sunday afternoon.

The young mother posted on social media that she was a recovering drug addict, having used meth from the age of 16.

The ‘horrendous attack’ soaked Ms Anderson’s toddler in blood and shocked police and paramedics.

She made an emergency triple-0 call at about 10:40 pm on the night of her death to report a man had broken into her home.

Police said they found the young mother lying on the landing last Friday outside her Crebert Street unit with horrific injuries.

Thompson was taken to John Hunter Hospital with a hand wound where he had remained under police guard.

On Sunday afternoon he was formally charged with murder, enter with intent and breaching an apprehended domestic violence order.

Thompson is understood not to be the father of the child.

The dreadful scene shocked first responders and left a seasoned senior police officer severely shaken.

Newcastle City Commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey confirmed the child at the scene was found ‘covered in blood’.

‘I’ve just spent the last 20 minutes or so viewing body worn footage and it was a horrendous scene, horrendous,’ he said.

Ms Anderson died outside her unit despite desperate attempts by paramedics to save her.

Police confirmed her son, 3, was found ‘covered in blood’ but was not injured.

Ms Anderson often used her Facebook account to comment on or forward reports of alleged domestic violence, such as the recent alleged killing of Charlise Mutten, 9, in NSW.

She once posted a comment above a photo of some young men sitting on a wall, saying ‘highly embarrassing, I had a baby to someone like this.

Ms Anderson responded to another commenter, saying ‘I’m not really being funny… this is his friend group… kill me.’

She also posted a cartoon comparing male and female parenting, implying that women had a much harder job of being considered a good parent.

Ms Anderson had battled drug addiction from the age of 16.

On May 25, 2019, she posted on Facebook that ‘addiction is a real thing, addiction is a disease that makes you too selfish to see the havoc and mess in your life that you created or care about the people’s who’s lives you shattered and hurt.

‘It makes you blind to who you are when you are high.

‘I’ve been clean from ice for three years now and I still count myself as a person in recovery, only in the process of fixing myself from being an addict is when I found out who I really was.’

Four ambulances and a specialist care team tried to save Anderson but to no avail.

Superintendent Humphrey confirmed the child found at the scene was ‘unharmed’ and is now safe with relatives.

‘Police arrived to find a 21-year-old woman critically injured lying outside her home. Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics rendered assistance but the woman died at the scene.

‘She had suffered a number of stab wounds.’

Police initiated Strike Force Slant to investigate her death and the circumstances.

Ms Anderson’s shocked family and friends began to pay tribute on Saturday after hearing of her death.

‘We will love and miss you always beautiful girl… fly high gorgeous,’ Naomi Anderson wrote.

A friend of Ms Anderson’s commented: ‘My heart is with your baby and family at this traumatic time… Your son will be protected for you.’

Another wrote: ‘I’m gobsmacked. This world is such a dark, terrible place.’

A male friend said he ‘got a call this morning you were gone. I couldn’t believe it.

‘I guess God needed another angel. Shine bright up there beautiful, you’ll always be my best friend, on my mind is where you’ll stay with them memories.’

A female friend said she was ‘sick of losing my close friends to either drugs or violence. This world has to change.

‘You had such a beautiful life ahead of you with your beautiful boy. My girl I’m gonna miss you dearly.

‘My heart is broken… I’ll miss you every day. I love you so much. Your son will always remember how beautiful his mother was.’

Three late goals see Manchester United past Newcastle United https://www.adomonline.com/three-late-goals-see-manchester-united-past-newcastle-united/ Sun, 18 Oct 2020 10:44:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1869018 Manchester United scored three late goals as they return to winning ways with a fully deserved triumph at Newcastle.

After shipping six in an abysmal defeat to Tottenham last time out, United made the worst possible start, with Luke Shaw diverting Emil Krafth’s cross into his own net in the second minute.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men made the perfect response and levelled through Harry Maguire’s header in the 23rd-minute after Bruno Fernandes had a goal chalked off by VAR just minutes earlier.

The visitors dominated proceedings, overwhelming Steve Bruce’s defence, but despite creating a number of opportunities somehow found themselves level at the break.

David De Gea came to United’s rescue with a fantastic save on the line to deny Callum Wilson just after the restart, while at the opposite end Karl Darlow ended Fernandes’ 100 per cent record from the spot with a strong one-handed save after Marcus Rashford won the penalty.

The Newcastle goalkeeper then bravely denied Rashford at point-blank range as United’s frustration grew.

But Solskjaer’s side finally took the lead with four minutes remaining, with Fernandes finishing a clever counter-attack before Aaron Wan-Bissaka added a third with his first senior goal and Rashford put the gloss on a solid performance with a cool fourth.

We’re still top, Atsu tells Newcastle fans https://www.adomonline.com/still-top-atsu-tells-newcastle-fans/ Tue, 14 Mar 2017 08:22:05 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=26301 Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu believes their hopes of qualifying for the English Premier League is still alive despite Saturday’s loss to Fulham.

The Magpies suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at home, but still find themselves on top of the table after matchday 37.

Rafael Benitez’s side are now tied with Brighton and Hove Albion, the latter recording a 3-0 home triumph over Derby County on Friday.

“We have to put this game behind us,” Atsu said, as reported by The Chronicle.

“We lost the game too easily and it’s a very disappointing result for us.

“But we have to put it out of our minds and focus on the next game. This is all we can do.

“We have to stay concentrated, though.

“We’re not just playing one game, we need to focus on the next ones coming up. Every game, home or away, matters.

“It’s up to us to make things right, we’re still top of the league and it’s time to stick together.”

Newcastle face Birmingham City in their next Championship game on Saturday.

Atsu, on loan from Chelsea, has netted three times in 24 appearances for the Magpies.
