His image appeared on the iconic Nasdaq billboard in Times Square alongside the message: “Ghana is Open for Business.”

The ceremony preceded the U.S.-Ghana Executive Business Roundtable, co-hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), which brought together top executives and investors from the fintech, manufacturing, and energy sectors.

At the forum, President Mahama outlined reforms aimed at enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness, including the removal of minimum capital requirements for foreign investors and the introduction of a residency-by-investment program.

The initiative is expected to attract between $5 billion and $10 billion in inflows by 2028.

President Mahama is in New York for the 80th United Nations General Assembly, where he will advocate for global financial reforms and deeper economic integration across Africa.

His government has framed these reforms as pivotal to building long-term growth, resilience, and investor confidence.

Pele’s Cosmos revived but drop New York from name https://www.adomonline.com/peles-cosmos-revived-but-drop-new-york-from-name/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 09:00:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554541 The iconic New York football club which brought football legends Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruyff to the USA is back – albeit with a rebrand.

The Cosmos have been relaunched, dropped references to the Big Apple from their name, and will be based in Paterson, New Jersey.

From 2026 Cosmos’ men’s team will play in USL League One, the third tier of the United Soccer League, which operates independently of Major League Soccer.

The club plan to enter a women’s team into the USL Super League in 2027.

Cosmos will play their matches at the 7,800-seat Hinchliffe Stadium, which has predominantly been used as a baseball ground in the past.

It is a much smaller venue than the club’s heyday of the 1970s and 1980s when they drew sizeable crowds to the Giants Stadium.

North Jersey Pro Soccer, headed up by real estate developer Baye Adofo-Wilson, has acquired the intellectual property rights and a majority holding in the Cosmos from Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso.

Italian-born American businessman Commisso has retained a small stake in the Cosmos having effectively mothballed them in 2021 after he bought the Serie A club.

Former Manchester United and Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi has been installed as the Cosmos’ vice-chairman and head of soccer.

Rather than pulling in stars from the global game, the latest incarnation of the Cosmos plan to invest in the talent on their doorstep.

“The real magic will be the players we develop right here in North Jersey,” Rossi said at a launch event at Paterson City Hall.

“We’re going to show what it means to be a Cosmo. The values, the style, the community – that’s what draws people in.”

The first iteration of the Cosmos won the North American Soccer League (NASL) five times between 1975 and 1984 before the competition ceased because of financial issues.

Cosmos folded in 1985 before being revived in 2010, playing in a new NASL between 2011 and 2017 and winning the title on three occasions.

Giant invasive African snail found in New York: Authorities race to contain threat https://www.adomonline.com/giant-invasive-african-snail-found-in-new-york-authorities-race-to-contain-threat/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 13:15:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2431501 A massive African land snail, capable of wreaking havoc on ecosystems and human health, has been discovered in Brooklyn, New York, sparking urgent action from state authorities.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced in June that the mollusk, which can grow up to eight inches long and five inches in diameter, was “surrendered” to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

The African land snail is not just an ecological curiosity—it poses serious risks. Known for its voracious appetite, the snail can consume over 500 types of plants, threatening local agriculture and natural habitats. More alarmingly, it carries a parasite that can cause meningitis, a potentially fatal disease, in humans.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether the snail was kept as a pet or found in the wild. If it has established a presence in New York, the consequences could be severe for both the city and the state. The snail’s discovery adds to the growing list of invasive species in New York, including the northern snakehead fish and the mitten crab, raising concerns among conservationists.

Possession of such invasive species is illegal in New York, and the DEC has emphasized the importance of early detection and rapid response to prevent their spread. The African land snail has a notorious history of invasion in the United States. It first appeared in Hawai’i in 1936 and later in Florida, where authorities spent millions of dollars over several decades trying to eradicate it. The snail can reproduce on its own, laying hundreds of eggs every few months, making containment efforts particularly challenging.

Florida remains the only state to have successfully eradicated the snail, after two costly and prolonged efforts. The state used a combination of visual inspections, detector dogs, and manual removal to eliminate over 168,000 snails across 32 areas. However, parts of Florida are still under quarantine due to recent re-infestations.

While some invasive species have been controlled through public consumption, the African land snail has not been promoted as a food source in the U.S., despite being considered a delicacy in parts of West Africa. In a recent incident, 90 snails were seized and euthanized at a Detroit airport, having been smuggled in from Ghana.

New York’s environmental authorities are now working to ensure that this invasive species does not take hold. Public awareness and cooperation will be crucial in preventing the snail from establishing a foothold in the state.

New York couple find safe containing $100k in lake https://www.adomonline.com/new-york-couple-find-safe-containing-100k-in-lake/ Tue, 04 Jun 2024 10:24:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2404278

A couple of “magnet fishing” enthusiasts say they pulled up a safe containing an estimated $100,000 (£78,000) from a New York lake.

James Kane and Barbie Agostini threw a rope with a magnet into a lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens on Friday and pulled up the safe.

Upon opening the secured box, they said they found it stuffed with bundles of water-damaged $100 bills.

They told NY1 police told them the safe wasn’t linked to any crime and that they were allowed to keep the money. The BBC has approached the New York Police Department (NYPD) for comment.

“We have found plenty of safes before,” Mr Kane said. “And then I saw the numbers and thought: ‘This is not possible.'”

“We pulled it out and it was big stacks of freaking hundreds,” he added. “These are thick stacks – they’re soaking wet, they’re pretty much destroyed.”

“There were no IDs, no way to find the original person, in the safe,” Mrs Agostini said. “[The police] were like: ‘well, congratulations!'”

Magnet fishing involves trailing a line with a strong magnet through lakes and rivers and seeing what is pulled up.

The couple said they began magnet fishing during the Covid-19 pandemic. They said they had previously found World War Two-era grenades, nineteenth-century guns and a full-size motorbike.

Ghanaian couple found guilty of fatally beating 5-year-old son in New York https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaian-couple-found-guilty-of-fatally-beating-5-year-old-son-in-new-york/ Mon, 01 Apr 2024 11:44:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2375652 After nearly three years since the tragic incident, a US-based Ghanaian couple has been convicted of second-degree murder in the death of their five-year-old son on Long Island.

Valerie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae were found guilty of brutally beating the child with “at least four different instruments” over three days in 2021, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.

The prosecutors revealed that neither Owusu, the biological mother, nor Addae called 911 or sought medical assistance when the boy’s condition worsened.

Instead, they transported him to a family member’s house, where he was later discovered deceased.

“This little boy endured days of abuse at the hands of these defendants, one of whom was his own mother, until tragically succumbing to his severe injuries,” stated the District Attorney in a press release.

“Thanks to the diligent investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department and the dedicated efforts of the prosecutors, justice has been served in holding the defendants accountable for this heinous crime.”

The Ghanaian couple is set to be sentenced on May 1, 2024, facing the possibility of life imprisonment.

Illegal synagogue tunnel leads to 9 arrests https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-synagogue-tunnel-leads-to-9-arrests/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 07:42:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2340528 Nine members of a New York Hasidic Jewish community have been arrested and charged over a secret tunnel that connected to a historic synagogue.

They fought police after city officials and leaders of the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters came to close the tunnel.

The men are charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and obstructing governmental administration.

A spokesperson for the Chabad called them a “group of extremist students”.

The tunnels were built under a prominent street in Brooklyn, where the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters are located. The building is one of the most significant Jewish sites in the city.

City inspectors were called to the Chabad on Monday to conduct an emergency structural inspection. There were looming concerns that the illegal tunnel could have caused damage to the famous property.

A brawl broke out after police found a group of young men blocking efforts to inspect and fill the tunnel with cement. Some of the men then broke through the wall of the prayer space. Those acts led to the arrests.

Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, the chairman of the Chabad, thanked police for their efforts and said the community was “pained by the vandalism of a group of young agitators”.

“These odious actions will be investigated, and the sanctity of the synagogue will be restored,” he said.

It is unclear who built the tunnel, how they did it and what their motivations were. It appears the tunnel connects to at least one other building on the street in Brooklyn.

One local told the New York Times that the men sought to build the tunnel to hasten the expansion of the synagogue.

Some members who have attended services and functions at the Chabad have reportedly complained about overcrowding in the building in recent years.

Videos and photos from inside the building on Monday, however, showed a small group of mostly young men trying to block the tunnel from being filled with cement.

Others were seen pulling wood panels from the walls of the sanctuary and using benches to block police in the videos and images. One of the videos reviewed by the BBC showed an officer using a spray to break up a growing skirmish.

The building, which sees thousands of visitors each year, was formerly the home of the leader of the Orthodox Jewish movement – Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

The rabbi is credited with leading the Chabad-Lubavitch and revitalising the Hasidic religious community after it was devastated in the Holocaust. He died in 1994, but his headquarters remains a well-known centre for the Jewish religion.

While the Chabad-Lubavitcher movement is sprawling and its mission is to welcome Jews at all levels of religious practice, it also has key divisions within the larger movement. Those divisions appeared to have spilled over in the tunnel dispute at 770 Eastern Parkway this month.

A deeply religious fringe group within the Chabad believes Rabbi Schneerson is the Jewish Messiah – an idea the mainstream movement rejects. That disagreement is reportedly an element in the tunnel altercation.

The building has been closed as inspection of the tunnels has continued.

US-based Ghanaian taxi driver beaten to death by passengers over fare https://www.adomonline.com/us-based-ghanaian-taxi-driver-beaten-to-death-by-passengers-over-fare/ Tue, 16 Aug 2022 12:20:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2150155 New Yorkers have rallied behind an immigrant taxi driver who died on Saturday in what police described as an attack by passengers who had refused to pay their fare.

Kutin Gyimah, a 52-year-old father of four originally from Ghana, was dropping off a group of five near Rockaway Beach in New York City around 6.20am when they attempted to rob him, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The former accountant tried to chase them down, only for one of them to knock him to the ground where he cracked his skull and lost consciousness, police said.

He was then found lying in the roadway near a playground with trauma to the back of his head, and was pronounced dead at St John’s Hospital. The NYPD is investigating his death as a homicide.

On Sunday, the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers announced a $15,000 reward for any information leading to the attackers’ arrest, while a GoFundMe page created for Gyimah’s family by his colleague Spyros Drakos had raised more than $50,000 as of Sunday afternoon.

“I need justice for my husband because he doesn’t deserve to die this way,” said Gyimah’s widow Abigail Barwuah at a press conference that morning, reportedly weeping as she spoke.

“He didn’t rest throughout the pandemic – he was working. He was a good, good man. He was my backbone.”

Ms Barwuah appeared alongside the couple’s two older children, aged seven and eight, who also cried, as well as more than a dozen friends, relatives, and other taxi drivers.

Gyimah’s best friend Samuel Ayebi described how he had picked Gyimah up from the airport when he first arrived in the US 18 years ago, before introducing him to the taxi business.

NYPD commissioner Keechant Sewell said: “Kutin Gyimah was the victim of a senseless attack in Queens near Beach 54th St. and Arverne Blvd. As his loved ones mourn, Kutin is in the thoughts of the NYPD detectives who are working hard to apprehend those responsible.”

A spokesperson for the city government said: ” This tragedy is not only devastating, but unacceptable…. we extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and coworkers during this painful time and we will work diligently to bring all people responsible to justice.”

According to The New York Post, security footage from a nearby shop shows Gyimah chasing after the group of three men and two women after they scrambled out of his car’s back seat.

The Post reported that Gyimah caught up to them and held one of them down, before being beaten by the other four. He stood up, then was punched by one of the men and fell backwards.

Rev Samuel Arhin, a priest at the Ghana United Methodist Church where Gyimah workshipped, called him “a loving and caring gentleman – hardworking”, telling CBS News: “We’ve really lost a dedicated father.”

On his GoFundMe page, Mr Drakos described how Gyimah had continued doggedly ferrying passengers during the pandemic, saying: “This to me is a hero, like the first responders. If a doctor, a nurse, someone, a family member needed to get somewhere, he was driving the cab, and he never stopped.”

Trump refuses to answer questions in New York probe https://www.adomonline.com/trump-refuses-to-answer-questions-in-new-york-probe/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 11:22:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2148328 Former US President, Donald Trump, has declined to answer questions as part of a New York state investigation into his family’s business practices.

Mr Trump had sued in an effort to block the interview at the New York attorney general’s office on Wednesday.

State officials accuse the Trump Organization of misleading authorities about the value of its assets in order to get favourable loans and tax breaks.

Mr Trump denies wrongdoing and has called the civil probe a witch hunt.

An hour after he was pictured arriving at the Manhattan office where he was questioned under oath, Mr Trump released a statement in which he criticised New York Attorney General Letitia James and the broader investigation.

“Years of work and tens of millions of dollars have been spent on this long simmering saga, and to no avail,” he said. “I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution.”

Ms James’ office confirmed that the interview took place on Wednesday and that “Mr Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination”.

“Attorney General James will pursue the facts and the law wherever they may lead,” the statement added. “Our investigation continues.”

His deposition comes just days after the FBI executed an unprecedented search warrant at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, as part of a separate investigation that is reportedly linked to his handling of classified material.

While the attorney general’s investigation is a civil one, a parallel investigation is being carried out by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office which could result in criminal charges.

Legal analysts suggest Mr Trump may have declined to answer questions on Wednesday because his answers could have been used against him in that criminal investigation. The former president invoked the Fifth Amendment, which protects people from being compelled to be a witness against themselves in a criminal case.

The questioning lasted around four hours, and included lengthy breaks, his lawyer Ronald Fischetti told US media.

Mr Trump began by reading a statement into the record condemning the attorney general and her investigation and invoking his Fifth Amendment rights.

He proceeded to say “same answer” to every question he was asked.

Ms James’ office has said that the depositions – a legal term that means testimony not given in court – were among the last remaining investigative procedures to be carried out.

Once the investigation concludes, the state attorney general could decide to bring a lawsuit seeking financial penalties against Mr Trump or his company.

Ms James had sought Mr Trump’s deposition – and that of two of his children, Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr – for more than six months while the family resisted subpoenas through the New York court system.

Lawyers for Mr Trump had also attempted to sue Ms James in a bid to prevent her from questioning the former president and his children.

But in February, a New York Supreme Court judge ruled that all three must sit for depositions. Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr were questioned earlier this month.

The judge said the investigation had uncovered “copious evidence of possible financial fraud” giving the attorney general a “clear right” to question under oath the former president and two of his children involved in the business.

Ms James hailed the judge’s decision as a victory, saying that “justice has prevailed”.

The investigation, which was first opened in 2019, seeks to prove that Mr Trump and the Trump Organization misrepresented the value of assets in order to obtain favourable loans and tax breaks. The alleged fraud is said to have taken place before Mr Trump took office.

Ghanaian arrested for smearing faeces on woman’s face in New York https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaian-arrested-for-smearing-faeces-on-womans-face-in-new-york/ Mon, 21 Mar 2022 09:45:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2093595 A Ghanaian has been arrested in Bronx after smearing faeces on the face of a 43-year-old-woman at a subway station.

The man, identified as Frank Abrokwa, 37, was arrested February 28 and charged with forcible touching, menacing, disorderly conduct, and harassment, as a result of the heinous act.

The attack took place at 5:15pm on February 21 on the southbound platform at the East 241st Street station.

According to New York authorities just before the attack, Abrokwa hit on the victim, asking her, ‘Hey, mami, hey, mami, why don’t you talk to me?’

When she ignored him, he walked into a subway car and defecated into a bag.

Surveillance video from the station then shows Abrokwa walking back out of the idling subway car and lunging at the woman, smearing the excrement on her.

When the woman leans forward, he walks behind her and presses the waste against the back of her head and her back.

During his first court appearance at Bronx Criminal Court late Tuesday, the New York Daily News reported that Abrokwa had cursed out at the judge.

He said he was tired of waiting and demanded the judge hurried things up so he could be handed over to Brooklyn detectives who were waiting to question him in a hate crime investigation.

Abrokwa has been arrested 44 times, has been accused of repeatedly punching a 30-year-old stranger on a subway platform at 125th St. and Lenox Ave. on January 7, and punching a 53-year-old stranger at the Greyhound station at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown on February 5, the Daily News reported.

More recently, it was reported that he grabbed screwdrivers and pepper spray from a Bronx hardware store on February 22, then pointed a screwdriver at an employee and said, ‘Call the police.’

In court Tuesday night, the prosecutor tried to convince the judge that Abrokwa should be held on $5,000 cash or $15,000 bond, arguing the attack was part of a pattern of behavior.

But the judge said since she didn’t have depositions to review in his other arrests, she did not have reason to hold him.

However, Abrokwa did not leave the court a free man. Brooklyn detectives took him into custody as a suspect in a hate crime, the Daily News reported.

Protests held in New York, California against Ghana anti-LGBT bill [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/protests-held-in-new-york-california-against-ghana-anti-lgbt-bill/ Tue, 12 Oct 2021 09:18:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2027180

Ghanaians and allies in New York and California on Monday, October 11, 2021, organised a protest against the anti-LGBTQI+ bill before Parliament for consideration.

The protest saw rallies organised in Harlem, New York, and in Oakland, California over what they described as a call to scrap the ‘hate bill’.

Eight Members of Parliament jointly submitted a private bill to push for the criminalisation of LGBTQI+ activities in the country.

The bill, which they term as a ‘Bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values’, was presented to Speaker Alban Bagbin on June 29, 2021.

The proponents want the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality to be criminalised in the country.

With the campaign trending with social media hashtags #QueerGhanaianLivesMatter, #KillTheBillGhana, and #Ghanagetsbetter the protesters called on Ghanaians home and abroad to join the call for rejection.

Wielding placards with diverse inscriptions to promote their campaign, the protesters chanted LGBTQ we demand equality in Ghana, Ghana’s hate bill has to go, Freedom and Justice is a lie among others.

They argued the bill, if passed, would ultimately torture and endanger the lives and health of LGBTQI+ Ghanaians.

“It would impede HIV and other health services for LGBTQI+ people. The bill would also require suspected LGBTQI+ people to recant their sexual and gender identities and pay for conversion therapy to avoid prison time,” the protesters said.

They added the law would push Ghana’s LGBTQI+ community further into the shadows and increase incidents of violence, hence their call for rejection.

Monday’s protest is the latest in series of international protests organised by Ghanaians and allies abroad calling on the country’s parliament to drop the bill or urge President Nana Akufo-Addo not to assent it if it passes.

Meanwhile, the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament has so far received over 124 memoranda from the public over the bill.

Rare drawings by boxing great Muhammad Ali sell for nearly $1m https://www.adomonline.com/rare-drawings-by-boxing-great-muhammad-ali-sell-for-nearly-1m/ Wed, 06 Oct 2021 23:41:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2025139 A rare collection of drawings, sketches, and paintings by champion boxer Muhammad Ali has sold at auction for nearly $1m (£733,760).

Some 26 artworks went under the hammer at Bonhams’ auction house in New York.

One of the most anticipated works, Sting Like a Bee, sold for $425,000 (£311,853), more than 10 times its pre-sale estimate.

Ali is hailed as one of the greatest ever athletes, activists, and poets, but his artistic talents are less known.

Bonhams said he drew and painted all his life – encouraged by his father who was a professional artist and eventually taking lessons from sports artist LeRoy Neiman.

“Muhammad Ali was a cultural icon who defined a generation. His artwork depicts those subjects close to his heart: Boxing, Civil Rights, Religion and World Peace and Humanitarianism,” said Helen Hall, Bonhams Director of Popular Culture, before the sale.

The works were put up for auction by art collector and friend Rodney Hilton Brown, who said Ali drew his first three pictures for him after a fight in Boston in 1977.

The total sale price of $945,524 (£693,788) was three times more than had been expected.

Sting Like a Bee was painted during the filming of Freedom Road in Mississippi in 1978 and is the only work to include a complete Muhammad Ali poem, Bonhams said.

It says: “Ref! he did float like a butterfly and sting like a bee! Yes, if you were smart you run like me!” Ali often described his boxing style as floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee.

Meanwhile, a 1979 red, white and blue painting on canvas, with the words “I Love You America,” sold for $150,000, and a 1967 sketch in felt pen comparing Islam to Christianity fetched $24,000, Reuters news agency reports.

Ali died in 2016 at the age of 74, decades after developing the degenerative brain disease Parkinson’s.
