According to him, John Mahama cancelled the allowances for teachers and nursing trainees but failed to honour the payment of the feeding grants he promised them.

He says such a person cannot be trusted, and therefore the trainees must not fall for his promises of automatic recruitment after school.

Addressing students of Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Accra, Dr. Opoku Prempeh urged the trainees to reject the NDC to protect their allowances.

“I want you all to continue to tell NDC that ‘we prefer the allowance more than your sweet stories’. So if you want your allowance to continue, you have only one option, on December 7, you know what to do,” he said.

He added, “The reason is simple, the one who cancelled the allowance before President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia government appointed Dr Opoku Prempeh as the Minister of Education and restored the allowance, that person is saying that he cancelled the allowance because he wanted to build hospitals.

“Have we finished building hospitals in Ghana?” he asked.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Madam Arthur described Mr. Bissue as “too light” and suggested he has “a lot of issues around him.”

She refrained from elaborating on the specifics of the issues surrounding the NPP candidate, explaining, “I’m not ready to talk about him.”

Madam Arthur praised Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, the NDC’s candidate for Essikado-Ketan, stating, “Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah is already making an impact, even though she has not yet been officially named as the MP.

She disclosed that, Mrs. Danquah’s dedication and her capabilities as a potential MP for the constituency.

“She has done a lot of work in the constituency and is known for her down-to-earth approach and effective advocacy for her constituents. Dr. Grace Ayensu is winning the seat because she genuinely serves her community and knows how to represent her people” she added.

NDC’s promises could rebuild trust, but commitment is key – Sulemana Braimah https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-promises-could-rebuild-trust-but-commitment-is-key-sulemana-braimah/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 12:32:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2439008 The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah has expressed optimism that Ghanaians will welcome the promises and commitments laid out in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto.

He believes that the NDC’s proposed actions could help rebuild public trust, especially after the perceived shortcomings of the current Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, Mr Braimah emphasised that Ghanaians have witnessed significant issues under the current government, and the NDC’s alternative approach might resonate with citizens eager for change.

He noted, particularly on the NDC’s promise to fight corruption that “Ghanaians will be very happy about a commitment or a promise that these issues will be thoroughly investigated by a new government. This will be one of the major challenges for the Bawumia campaign.”

However, Mr Braimah also urged caution, reminding the public that political parties often make lofty promises during election seasons, which frequently go unfulfilled.

“If you look at the NPP’s manifestos from 2012, 2016, and even 2020, you would think that if even half of what was promised had been implemented, Ghana would be in a much better position in the fight against corruption,” he said.

He said Ghanaians are likely to be pleased with the NDC’s commitment to holding wrongdoers in the current government accountable. Citing recent Afrobarometer data, Mr Braimah pointed out that “Ghanaians are clearly saying things are not going well—corruption is on the rise, and the quality of governance is declining.”

Mr Braimah stressed the importance of not just making promises but also demonstrating the commitment and strength of character needed to follow through. “Manifesto promises are essentially statements of intent. What is critical, beyond these intentions, is the commitment and the strength of character to adhere to these promises, and this has been lacking in the past. We hear all these fine promises, but once in power, the commitment often fades. The real issue is whether the strength of character exists to ensure that what is promised is delivered.”

He also touched on NDC’s focus on asset declaration, referencing remarks made by NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi. While acknowledging the need to improve the asset declaration regime, he pointed out that compliance was a problem even under the previous Mahama administration. “I can cite several instances where appointees failed to declare their assets, even under the flawed laws we have now.”

Despite this, Mr Braimah expressed hope that a new Mahama administration might learn from past mistakes and implement reforms more effectively. He emphasised the importance of reflecting on past experiences to better plan for the future, suggesting that this approach is essential for moving the country forward.

Climate Change: Africa bemoans lack of financial and technical support for NDC implementation https://www.adomonline.com/climate-change-africa-bemoans-lack-of-financial-and-technical-support-for-ndc-implementation/ Tue, 20 Aug 2024 18:12:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2436524 The African continent has not received sufficient financial and technical support to effectively implement, track and report on their current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) even as countries build momentum towards a new set of NDCs.

Adan Bare Duale of Kenya’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry says the lack of clarity on the amount of current and future funding, capacity building and technical support required to implement NDCs undermines the transparency of support framework under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

“As countries are building momentum towards a new set of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the African continent has not received sufficient financial and technical support to effectively implement, track and report on their current NDCs,” Mr. Duale told the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change (AGN) COP29 Preparatory Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya. “We also lack clarity on the amount of current and future funding, capacity building and technical support required to implement our NDCs. This vagueness undermines the transparency of support framework under the Paris Agreement and should be prioritized in the upcoming negotiations”.

The Cabinet Secretary reiterated Africa’s climate-induced socio-economic challenges and outlined the continent’s priorities for COP29 scheduled for Baku, Azerbaijan in November.

“African countries have seen major droughts and floods; storms and cyclones have intensified and become more frequent, while the financial and technical capacity of the continent to adapt to climate change and increasing climate and natural hazards continues to be limited,” he said, adding that by 2050, negative climate impacts could cost African countries up to USD 50 billion annually.

“Our priority, therefore, is to increase the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions development, in a manner that does not threaten food production. A crucial and most urgent objective of this meeting is to prepare our common position paper for COP29. Firstly, finance will lie at the heart of climate diplomacy at COP29 as a critical enabler of climate action. Climate finance is flowing to the continent at an insufficient scale and in unequal directions. Securing a strong favourable finance deal at COP29 is therefore vital,” he stated.

Priorities on Climate Finance and Adaptation

Another priority area is adaptation and loss and damage for Africa as climate impacts worsen. COP29 is deemed a pivotal opportunity to prioritize adaptation and loss and damage and secure the necessary financial and technical assistance to close the adaptation finance gap.

AGN Chair, Ali Mohamed, urged negotiators not to lose focus on Africa’s key priorities of finance and adaptation in the context of the continent’s sustainable development and poverty eradication agenda.

“As we deliberate, the bigger picture for us remains climate finance and adaptation as we strive to achieve our sustainable development objectives as a continent. It is clear that our development challenges, which include high poverty levels, poor access to energy, clean water, food security and primary health care amidst a debt crisis, are already being compounded by climate change. It follows therefore that finance is at the pinnacle of our challenges and must be addressed, even as we strive to meet our climate obligations,” he said.

The African common position for COP29 is envisaged to be presented to the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) and the Committee of African Heads of State on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) next month for consideration and adoption.

The common position includes elements that are considered a priority for Africa and for COP29, climate finance and adaptation rank top on the list.

“Africa’s unified position on climate finance, adaptation, and ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) reflects the continent’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development and resilience. The energy transition journey we embark on today is not just about shifting resources but redefining Africa’s future in a way that prioritizes both people and the planet. UNEP looks forward to working with the Africa Group of Negotiators on Climate to enhance global support for a green inclusive climate resilient future,” said Dr Rose Mwebaza UNEP Africa Regional Director.
