He questioned why the government renamed C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, and Akenten Appiah‑Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, yet left the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) untouched.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh made the remarks at the 8th “Opɛmsuo Lecture” organised by the Asante Professional Club, held in Kumasi.

He argued that there is nothing wrong with naming institutions after individuals who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s development, especially in education.

“We wake up and they say they have changed the names of some schools, but for KNUST, they do nothing, and you can’t understand it. It feels like discrimination,” he said.

He added that he does not see why a university can be named after Kwame Nkrumah while other contributors cannot receive similar recognition.

Dr. Prempeh also wondered why civil society organisations in the education sector, professors, and opinion leaders have remained silent on the matter.

He noted that KNUST was named after Kwame Nkrumah by the Convention People’s Party (CPP) government.

“I have been in the Education Ministry before, so I know what I am saying. It was Act 80 that allowed us to name the Tech University after Kwame Nkrumah, and that was during the CPP government,” he said.

The former Education Minister warned that frequent name changes by successive governments would not benefit the nation’s progress, particularly in the education sector.

He noted that the current move appears to be an attempt to cut some portion of the country’s history.

“In Ghana, it seems some people want us to start our history from 1979,” he claimed.

Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, has been engaging members of the NPP ahead of the party’s January 31 primaries, with his latest tour taking him to the Bono Region.

He urged delegates to remain firmly behind Dr Bawumia, describing him as the “most prepared” candidate to lead the NPP.

“In my engagement with the regional and constituency executives in the Bono Region, I reinforced this call for unity and civility in our campaign conduct. I also stated my clear conviction that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the most prepared to lead our party into the future,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

He also highlighted his continued message of peace and unity among party members as he rallies support for the former Vice President.

“My message throughout this campaign period for a flagbearer has remained consistent. Regardless of our individual preferences or internal differences, we are one political tradition, strengthened only when we close ranks and rally behind the elephant and the leader of our party, the New Patriotic Party.”

Why is this an issue now? — Napo on Wesley Girls’ controversy [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/why-is-this-an-issue-now-napo-on-wesley-girls-controversy-video/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 13:36:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609008 Former Manhyia South MP, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed disappointment over the ongoing controversy involving Wesley Girls’ Senior High School, questioning why it has suddenly become an issue.

“This issue had never been an issue before, so why is it an issue now?” he asked during a one-on-one interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, an alumnus of Prempeh College, pointed out the history of religious tolerance in Ghanaian schools.

“I went to Prempeh College, and I had Muslim friends who completed school with us. I know Christians who went to Muslim schools. If religion had been a real barrier, our ancestors who built these schools would not have allowed it,” he said.

He stressed that ancestors prioritized unity over religious differences.

“When the schools were being created, Methodist and Presbyterian people came together. Every part of this country has tolerated different religions while still worshipping their own gods. If we want to use religion to divide this country, then our ancestors should take over,” he added.

On the issue of school choice, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized personal responsibility.

“School choice in Ghana has always been free. Nobody forces anyone to attend any school. If a student chooses a school, they should understand its rules and regulations. If they are choosing the school for its academic standards and not because of religion, then why are we even talking about this?”

His comments come as the Supreme Court hears a case against Wesley Girls’ SHS, where lawyer Shafic Osman alleges that the school prevents Muslim students from praying, fasting, and practicing other aspects of their faith.

The Court has ordered Wesley Girls to respond within 14 days and has allowed civil society group Democracy Hub to join the case as amicus curiae.

Meanwhile, Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine has rejected claims of discrimination, asserting that the Methodist-run school retains the right to enforce rules reflecting its Christian foundation, even if this limits certain religious practices.

Prof. Jane Naana began past questions training before I became Education Minister – Napo reveals [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/prof-jane-naana-began-past-questions-training-before-i-became-education-minister-napo-reveals-video/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 12:21:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608963 Former Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed that efforts to help students improve exam performance began before his tenure, led by former Education Minister Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

Speaking in a one-on-one interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Opoku Prempeh said Prof. Jane Naana recognized declining student performance and began training teachers to use past examination questions effectively.

“When she realized that student performance was falling, they employed West African Examination Council examiners and markers to train a cohort of teachers on how students answer questions,” he said.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh explained that teachers were trained to pass on this knowledge to other teachers, ensuring that all were on the same level as examiners.

“They were already putting the teachers together, and I even did some training at Kumasi Anglican Secondary School every year. So they trained teachers, and teachers train other teachers,” he added.

He said he continued and expanded the initiative when he became Minister of Education.

“What I did with the West African Examinations Council was to present questions from the last ten years, along with answers and examiners’ reports, so that every student could prepare effectively. The printing of questions is not unique to the NPP government, but we ensured that every student in their final year had access to the last ten years’ questions and answers to understand what to expect,” he said.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for 2025 were released, sparking national debate. After years of strong pass rates under the Free SHS policy, the results show a sharp decline.

Core Mathematics pass rates fell from 66.86% in 2024 to 48.73%, while Social Studies dropped from 71.53% to 55.82%. English and Integrated Science recorded slight declines but remained relatively stable.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comments highlight the importance of teacher training and access to past questions in improving student outcomes and addressing declining performance in key subjects.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted that while Ghana is rich in indigenous languages, only a handful are taught in schools and used for examinations.

“This country has many Ghanaian languages, but only a few are taught in schools. I am the education minister who added Frafra as a language of study that can be used in examinations,” he said.

He expressed concern that students from communities that do not speak the dominant languages used in schools often face academic disadvantages.

“We have several communities that do not speak the main languages taught in schools, so what happens to them? It’s worrying,” he added.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Opoku Prempeh explained that not every national issue should be debated in the media.

“I don’t think everything should be made public. I’d prefer to speak to the minister directly behind closed doors and have a proper discussion on our education,” he said.

He cautioned that a decline in the quality of education could have far-reaching consequences for the nation, stressing the importance of safeguarding the credibility of Ghana’s academic credentials.

“We need to maintain the standards of our education system for our certificates to be valued both in and outside Ghana,” he added.

My ‘mo Kwame Nkrumah’ comment was totally misunderstood – NAPO https://www.adomonline.com/my-mo-kwame-nkrumah-comment-was-totally-misunderstood-napo/ Tue, 25 Nov 2025 07:42:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2603454 The running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 election, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, says his controversial “mo Kwame Nkrumah” remark was taken out of context and completely misunderstood.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, the former Manhyia South MP insisted that the public outrage that followed the comment did not reflect his intent.

Dr Opoku Prempeh, aka NAPO, said the statement was made in a specific political moment and should not have been interpreted as an attack on Ghana’s first President.

“At that time, you can’t go into the evidence, so I made a statement ‘mo Kwame Nkrumah’, and I subsequently had to go to Nkroful and speak to the Chiefs there and explain the contest in which the statement was made,” he said.

He explained that political communication can be easily distorted and that leaders must take responsibility when their words create confusion.

“Because in politics, if somebody misunderstands, misquotes, or you allow your communication to be misread or to be misunderstood, you have to own it. So I owned it, and that is why I issued the statement,” he said.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh compared his remark to football banter to underscore that he was not attacking Kwame Nkrumah.

“Not that the context was wrong. I’m a die-hard fan of Kumasi Asante Kotoko. So if I’m teasing Olympic supporters and I said ‘mo Oly fuo no’, I’m not really insulting Olympic fans. I’m just upping Kotoko fuo because I am one of them,” he explained.

He maintained that the Nkrumah reference had been “totally misunderstood”.

The NPP running mate acknowledged the strong reaction that followed.

“It generated a lot of uproar. Nkrumahists got furious, and I apologise to them,” he said. But he urged critics to reflect on Nkrumah’s own writings.

“They should go and read Kwame Nkrumah’s Last Days from Guinea and look at how he described his own Convention People’s Party (CPP). He said the CPP was dead. That’s Nkrumah’s own writing, so we don’t say these things out of lack of respect. You know me. I have friends everywhere,” he noted.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comment in July 2024—stating that no president, including Kwame Nkrumah, had outperformed President Akufo-Addo—triggered widespread backlash when he was unveiled as the New Patriotic Party’s running mate.

Critics, including the Convention People’s Party, described his remark as disrespectful. The episode reignited concerns about what many opponents have called his “arrogant” public posture.

On PM Express, however, Dr Opoku Prempeh insisted that the debate was driven by misinterpretation rather than intent.

He stressed that the statement was political rhetoric, not an attack on Ghana’s founding leader.

NPP didn’t listen enough – Napo https://www.adomonline.com/npp-didnt-listen-enough-napo/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 06:44:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2601566 The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, says one hard truth has become clear to him after months of political reflection.

According to him, the NPP under the Nana Akufo-Addo government simply did not listen enough.

The former Education and Energy Minister believes that failure cost the party the trust of the people, with severe consequences.

“One thing I’ve concluded in the last 10 months is that there was a broken trust between citizens and government. The trust that was broken hurt so much so that we saw the results so broken,” he said on Joy News’ PM Express.

Asked by host Evans Mensah what caused that rupture, Dr Opoku Prempeh was direct.

“We didn’t listen enough; we assumed a lot of things we shouldn’t have assumed,” he admitted.

He added that even their sense of purpose as a government came under strain.

Dr Prempeh argued that the global environment made the period even more difficult, saying the world had been shaken on multiple fronts.

“We had gone through the West, global economic climate, medically and economically or health-wise,” he said.

According to him, governments across the world were swept up in a storm, with many overturned, leaving only autocratic regimes able to withstand the shocks.

He highlighted how dramatically the global economy had shifted and pointed to staggering changes in basic costs.

“A container from China that cost $1,200 logistic-wise had risen to $14,000. People’s lifetime savings have been wiped out,” he said.

He added that the human toll was equally devastating.

“People had died in their droves that had never been seen before, without a military crisis or World War. So a lot of things that happened.”

Through it all, Dr Prempeh maintained that despite the difficult global context, their biggest failure was not listening to the public early enough — a failure he believes paved the way for everything that followed.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, addressed criticisms suggesting he may be shifting his political allegiance.

He insisted that he remains firmly behind Dr. Bawumia, whom he described as the best candidate to lead the NPP into the next election.

“I still support Bawumia 100%. Being an ingrate doesn’t pay,” he stressed, noting that his selection as Bawumia’s running mate in 2024 was a show of trust and defiance of pressure from within the party.

According to Dr. Prempeh, some influential figures lobbied against his nomination, but Dr. Bawumia “defied all odds” to choose him.

“There are some bigwigs who even went to Bawumia to tell him not to choose me, but he still picked me. I am not an ingrate,” he emphasized.

Dr. Prempeh also clarified his relationship with other leading figures within the party, particularly Kennedy Agyapong, whom he described as a “friend and big brother.” However, he maintained that his loyalty remains with Dr. Bawumia.

“If after he [Bawumia] wins again, he should go and think deeply about who he wants to make running mate,” Napo said, suggesting that the decision should always remain Bawumia’s prerogative.

Drawing on an Akan proverb, Dr. Prempeh likened Dr. Bawumia to a peacock, saying his standout qualities naturally attract attention and, by extension, criticism.

“Why do you think there are all sorts of attacks and propaganda against him? It’s because he stands out tall,” he added.

The former Education Minister reaffirmed his belief that Dr. Bawumia represents the party’s best chance of victory in 2028, citing his vision, resilience, and ability to command broad support.

Deputy AG reveals why NIB is investigating NAPO [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/deputy-ag-reveals-why-nib-is-investigating-napo-video/ Thu, 12 Jun 2025 06:51:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543899 Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai has confirmed that former Energy and Education Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, is under investigation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

However, Dr. Srem Sai was quick to emphasize that this does not imply guilt.

“He said he’s been going to the NIB for a while now. Nobody knew until he said it publicly,” Dr. Srem Sai stated on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday night.

According to him, the investigations relate to various projects executed during Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s tenure at both the Energy and Education Ministries over the eight-year period of the Akufo-Addo administration.

When asked about the scope of the probe, he replied, “A number of things. He was a minister for Energy and Education, so definitely, we have projects that were undertaken during his time. And so he would definitely be answering questions in respect of that.”

One such project is the controversial procurement of mathematical sets during his time as Education Minister. But Dr. Srem Sai clarified that being invited for questioning does not amount to culpability.

“You will not be prosecuted unless there is evidence that you were complicit in some of the things you undertook,” he said. “The fact that you were a minister at the time doesn’t mean that you will be criminally liable for anything.”

He cited the example of former Attorney General and later Railway Minister Joe Ghartey, who was invited for questioning over the Sky Train project but was ultimately not named in the charge sheet.

“There are things that can happen in a ministry which may not be your doing,” Dr. Srem Sai said. “And the fact that you have been invited for questioning doesn’t mean you are guilty.”

He also praised the maturity and cooperation shown by many government officials currently under investigation.

“I appreciate the demeanour of a lot of the government appointees,” he noted. “Once in a while, you hear someone has been picked up or invited, but I can tell you a large number of those who have been arrested, are on bail, or are under investigation are quiet.”

He said many are respecting the process and choosing not to attract media attention. “They won’t make any noise about it. Some believe the process must be allowed to work.”

While acknowledging that a few individuals make public appearances or draw crowds to institutions like EOCO, he stressed that the majority are compliant and cooperative.

“You go to court when the evidence shows that there’s a crime,” Dr. Srem Sai concluded.

I am under NIB interrogation – Napo confirms https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-under-nib-interrogation-napo-confirms/ Wed, 04 Jun 2025 16:10:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541784

The 2024 Vice Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has revealed that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) is interrogating him over his tenure at the Ministry of Education.

According to Napo, as he is popularly known, he has been invited to the NIB offices to assist with investigations, with the most recent visit occurring on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

“People don’t know that I’ve been invited by the NIB to assist in investigations into some issues during my time at the Ministry of Education. I couldn’t have declined that invitation,” he stated in an interview with 1957, which has gone viral.

Dr. Prempeh served as Minister of Education from January 2017 to January 2021 under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Given the time that has passed, Napo, who also served as Energy Minister, acknowledged that he may not recall every detail but assured he would fully cooperate.

“I’ve forgotten some of the issues; I can’t remember everything that happened while I was in office. That is why we have technocrats and others who assist in running the ministry and keep records,” he explained.

He further urged public officers to act with integrity while reflecting on the transient nature of political power.

“I always say that those of us in politics should know that no condition is permanent. Today, you can be in power; the next day, you could be in opposition.

“So politicians in power should always be mindful of what they do with the authority entrusted to them, so that if they are asked to account for their stewardship tomorrow, they can easily do so,” he advised.

Although the NIB has not released a formal statement on the ongoing investigations, some NPP members, including Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi and former National Service Authority Deputy Director of Operations Kwaku Ohene Gyan, have also been invited for questioning.

Thanks for using my name to fill halls but… – Napo to OB Amponsah https://www.adomonline.com/thanks-for-using-my-name-to-fill-halls-but-napo-to-ob-amponsah/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 15:12:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526077 Running mate to the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo,” has finally responded to viral jokes made about him by comedian OB Amponsah.

During his performance at the Bukom Boxing Arena, OB Amponsah humorously addressed Napo’s controversial remarks made during the 2024 election campaign — a segment that resonated strongly with the audience at the December 21, 2024 event.

In a lighthearted reaction, Dr. Opoku Prempeh acknowledged the use of his name in the comedian’s stand-up routine.

“If somebody who is a comedian is using my name and he is filling halls, I am very happy. I thank him because he is putting my name out there for free,” he remarked.

Joking further, he added, “But I will let my lawyers write to him so that we share the proceeds, the revenue, because I am unemployed.”

One of the highlights of OB’s performance centered on Napo’s campaign statement, where he controversially claimed that no president, including Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has developed Ghana like President Akufo-Addo.

“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Napo declared during his unveiling in Kumasi on July 9, 2024.

That statement sparked widespread backlash, becoming a favorite subject of OB Amponsah’s recent skits, which resurfaced on social media in the last 24 hours — prompting journalists to seek Napo’s reaction during a post-NEC meeting in Accra this morning.

Meanwhile, Dr. Opoku Prempeh has dismissed suggestions that he is positioning himself for a future presidential bid in 2028.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a party engagement, he said: “Me personally, I am not running in 2028.”

He emphasized that his focus remains on ensuring party unity ahead of the December elections, describing it as his utmost priority.

This gesture took place on Wednesday when the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage.

Napo urged the government to ensure a swift and indiscriminate intervention to aid the victims, adding that immediate relief should ensure no one is left behind in the recovery process.

His intervention follows a visit by former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who also commiserated with the victims and offered support.

Addressing the traders, Napo emphasized the need for unity, stressing that division could hinder the rebuilding efforts.

“I know Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the regional minister, Kennedy Agyapong, and others have visited you. Even President Mahama and some other executives from the NPP came here to visit you as well. So, if I don’t make my way here, it will not be fair to you,” he said.

“I believe that the woes of your brother are your woes as well. I have been affected personally by the fire outbreak. It is only when you get affected that you can truly understand how painful it is. I pray that God comforts you and helps you get back on your feet. Those of us in politics must understand that we use people to build a nation, not money,” he added.

Meanwhile, the current Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, also donated 100 bags of cement to the victims.

These donations are part of ongoing efforts by individuals, groups, and political figures to support the traders.

The fire, which destroyed a significant portion of the market, caused millions of cedis in damages, with many traders losing their stalls and goods.

The foundation’s mission is to prioritize mental health, inclusive education, menstrual hygiene, financial literacy, and ethical leadership, fostering a society that supports holistic development.

Speaking at the launch event at the African Regent Hotel in Accra, Mrs. Adade-Prempeh described the occasion as “the realization of a vision to empower lives and transform communities.”

“This moment is not just the fulfillment of a dream but the beginning of a movement—one that seeks to empower lives and transform communities,” she stated.

She emphasized the need for better mental health awareness and support, particularly for young people who often suffer in silence. She also highlighted the lack of resources for families, educators, and caregivers, stressing the importance of creating safe spaces and support systems for children with special learning needs.

Addressing menstrual hygiene, she noted how many adolescent girls miss school due to inadequate access to sanitary products and menstrual health education. Additionally, she underscored the importance of financial literacy, advocating for the integration of financial education into school curricula to help young people make informed financial decisions.

Special guest Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Commonwealth Secretary-General and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, commended the foundation’s focus on mental well-being, inclusive education, and financial literacy. She emphasized the importance of collaboration, ethical leadership, and human dignity in fostering inclusive progress.

Reaffirming the foundation’s alignment with democratic principles, human rights, and good governance, she urged stakeholders, policymakers, and civil society groups to work together to address challenges in mental health, education, financial insecurity, and ethical leadership.

NAPO demands retraction, apology from Bright Simons https://www.adomonline.com/napo-demands-retraction-apology-from-bright-simons/ Fri, 28 Feb 2025 09:28:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2509655 Former Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, is demanding an apology and retraction from the Honorary Vice President of policy think tank Imani-Africa, Bright Simons, over claims regarding his role in the 2020 unitisation directive between Springfield Exploration and Production Limited (Springfield) and Eni Ghana Exploration and Production Limited (ENI).

NAPO’s request follows a post by Simons on X, alleging that he was responsible for issuing the directive.

However, the former Manhyia South MP has clarified that he assumed office as Energy Minister on March 7, 2021, while the directive was issued in 2020, during his tenure as Education Minister.

His clarification comes in the wake of Energy Minister John Jinapor’s recent order to withdraw the directive.

According to NAPO, a careful review of the withdrawal letter and historical facts would have prevented Simons from making what he described as an avoidable error.

“The new government of Ghana has decided to save the country from further embarrassment by withdrawing a bizarre order issued by the former Energy Minister & Vice-Presidential Candidate of the former ruling party, NPP,” portions of Simons’ statement on Facebook read.

NAPO emphasized that while differing opinions on government decisions are valid, they must be expressed with accuracy, circumspection, and decorum.

Napo’s selection as running mate negatively impacted the NPP fortunes in 2024 elections – KNUST Research reveals https://www.adomonline.com/napos-selection-as-running-mate-negatively-impacted-the-npp-fortunes-in-2024-elections-knust-research-reveals/ Wed, 26 Feb 2025 18:40:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2509075 The selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had a detrimental effect on the New Patriotic Party’s fortunes in the 2024 general elections.

This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the Department of History and Political Science Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The key findings;

The study revealed that 85.45% of respondents are aware of Dr. Prempeh’s candidacy.

However, opinions on his influence are divided, with 47.29% believing he negatively impacts the campaign and 32.24% viewing him positively. Satisfaction with Dr. Prempeh’s performance is largely negative, with 36.31% very unsatisfied.

In contrast, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum is preferred by 53.14% of respondents as the ideal running mate and is seen as having the most positive impact by 58.56%.

The research on the prospects of the 2024 election, conducted by the Department of History and Political Science at the KNUST, was based on public perception and preference of the NPP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Lead researcher, Professor Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, sheds light on the findings.

“The data reveals mixed perception and a notable 47.29% of respondents, who believes that Dr. Prempeh negatively impacted the campaign,” he said.

Prof. Adu Gyamfi made some recommendations for Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s candidacy going forward.

“The running mate in any political party should potentially, if not galvanize support, serve as an icing on the cake of the campaign” he warned.

Dr. Amakye Boateng, a Political Scientist at the KNUST, also cited public dissatisfaction towards the NPP’s running mate.

The conclusion of the findings indicates that while Dr. Prempeh is widely recognized, his candidacy faces significant challenges due to dissatisfaction and mixed perceptions of his impact.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum is perceived as a more favourable choice, suggesting that his proven track record and public appeal could offer strategic advantages for the NPP.

To enhance campaign effectiveness, addressing public dissatisfaction and aligning candidate selection with voter expectations will be crucial for the NPP’s success going forward.

Did Bawumia secure Northern votes for NPP? – NAPO on election defeat https://www.adomonline.com/did-bawumia-secure-northern-votes-for-npp-napo-on-election-defeat/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 12:41:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2492663

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, better known as NAPO, has criticized the tribal undertone in discussions about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the recent election.

In an interview with Accra-based Channel One TV, NAPO reacted strongly to questions suggesting his underperformance in delivering Ashanti votes, which has been attributed to the party’s humiliating defeat.

“Did Bawumia, the Northerner, bring the Northern votes?” NAPO fired back, remarking that the question was triggering and unintelligent.

The 2024 NPP Vice Presidential Candidate stated that their loss is a shared responsibility, noting that voter turnout across the country contributed to the NPP’s decline.

“Never ask that question again because it might provoke someone to insult you. When I hear that comment, I am triggered to insult someone. No matter who you blame, the party has lost. Millions of Ghanaians didn’t vote and NPP lost millions of vote, did it all come from only Ashanti?” he retorted.

He pointed out that in the Ashanti Region which is a key NPP stronghold, voter turnout was 65%, among the highest in the country, and urged critics to avoid singling out any region.

“Tribes should not be an element in the debate at all. it’s a slippery slope we are setting up. Even Volta and Greater Accra saw shifts in votes. This is not about tribes; it’s about collective responsibility.”

Arguments prior to the elections suggested that NAPO’s presence on the ticket was intended to boost Ashanti votes, but he rubbished that assertion, clarifying that tribe was not a factor in his selection.

He remarked that competence was the basis of his selection, not ethnicity or his lineage in the Ashanti dynasty.

NAPO concluded by calling for unity within the party and an end to the blame game.

Let’s close shop for Ablakwa’s personal interest if Parliament business for now is irrelevant – NAPO https://www.adomonline.com/lets-close-shop-for-ablakwas-personal-interest-if-parliament-business-for-now-is-irrelevant-napo/ Tue, 17 Dec 2024 08:31:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2484572 Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has suggested that Parliament should halt all legislative business if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs believe the ongoing discussions and bills are not relevant in the wake of the election results.

Dr Opoku Prempeh was criticizing the claim by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been completely rejected by Ghanaians, rendering the current parliamentary activities unnecessary.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament today, Monday, the failed NPP vice presidential candidate in the just-ended elections argued that “Just to get up and say that Ghanaians have totally rejected NPP and all these bills and all these encumbrances is a very, very unfair statement. It is a very unfair statement that says that other things that have been programmed shouldn’t even be considered”.

Dr Opoku Prempeh argued that parliament has pressing issues to address, including social protection bills and environmental initiatives.

However, he acknowledged that if the NDC is unwilling to engage, there may be little reason to continue with parliamentary business.

“I think the new government then should come and start because we are resetting. And I agree, Ghanaians voted for resetting. So Mr Speaker, probably the only thing we have to do is to take a vote on account and close shop,” he stated.

Referencing the NDC’s campaign messaging, he noted the perceived emphasis on the “resetting agenda” and suggested that the current parliament focuses on limited priorities before wrapping up.

“Apart from the vote of proceedings and maybe his end-of-service benefits that he [Okudzeto Ablakwa] is very much interested in, every other thing, social protection bills, second reading of bills, third readings, if it is not worth doing, it’s not worth doing. Let’s agree on resetting, close shop on everything, do those they are interested in to further their own personal interests, and close shop,” Dr Opoku Prempeh concluded.

Addressing Dr. Bawumia, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed appreciation for the gesture, recalling the Vice President’s earlier visit to seek his blessings before starting the campaign.

According to him, that this could be the last opportunity for Muslims to have one of their own as president.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh made these remarks during an engagement with Imams and other Islamic groups in Kumasi.

He reminded the Muslim leaders of the significant contributions the NPP has made to the Zongo communities, including the establishment of the Zongo Development Fund, which has produced positive outcomes for Zongo communities across the country.

“The NPP has always been a friend of the Zongo communities. We have delivered with the establishment of the Zongo Development Fund, and the results are there for all to see. Dr. Bawumia is one of you, and if you don’t support him, this might be the last chance you have to see a Muslim rise to the presidency,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated passionately.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh also criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its alleged disrespect towards Muslims.

He pointed to the removal of prominent Muslim figures, former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and former Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak, from their positions as a clear indication of the NDC’s disregard for the Muslim community.

“Look at the disrespect shown by the NDC when they removed Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka Mubarak, both respected Muslim leaders, from their key positions. This is a clear message about how the NDC views the Muslim community,” he added.

He called on the Muslim leaders to reflect on the NDC’s track record and strongly urged them to support Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming elections.

“Now is the time to stand with Dr. Bawumia, for he is one of your own,” he concluded.

2024 Polls: NAPO outlines govt’s vision to digitize auto mechanics https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-napo-outlines-govts-vision-to-digitize-auto-mechanics/ Fri, 29 Nov 2024 12:20:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2477320 The running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has unveiled government plans to equip auto mechanics with the skills necessary to thrive in Ghana’s evolving automotive industry.

Addressing garage leaders at Suame Magazine in the Suame Constituency on Thursday, November 28, Dr. Prempeh underscored the urgency of preparing mechanics for the global shift toward digitalization in the automotive sector.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to providing auto mechanics with training and resources to ensure their relevance in the face of an impending auto industry revolution.

“Our objective is to ensure that Ghanaian mechanics are not left behind as the global automotive sector advances toward digitalization,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of training and capacity-building to avert job redundancies.

“In a few years, many of the vehicles you currently repair will be phased out, as the global industry transitions to electronic cars. Recognizing this, the NPP has already initiated training programs for auto mechanics under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) scheme, funded by the government. This will ensure you remain valuable and prepared for the future,” he assured.

“As the production of traditional cars declines, we will support garages to adapt to the digital era, ensuring they remain competitive and operational,” he added.

NAPO also addressed challenges faced by importers, particularly the frequent changes to import duties at Ghana’s ports, which have created significant uncertainties.

“Frequent changes in import duties disrupt planning for importers. To resolve this, Dr. Bawumia, upon election as president, will introduce a fixed-duty system. This will allow importers to know the exact cost of their duties before their containers arrive, enabling better planning and fostering stability,” he explained.

Mr Afriyie Ankrah made these remarks after Napo mistakenly urged voters to support NDC’s John Mahama in the December 7 election during a campaign rally.

The slip, which occurred twice, has sparked laughter and debates among Ghanaians.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah said the NPP is simply obsessed with John Mahama.

“One mistake is okay, but to repeat it twice means Napo needs help. He needs deliverance. He must be delivered because this is not normal. The spirit of the NDC and Mahama has taken over him. They are always dreaming about Mahama. It’s as if Mahama is living rent-free in their minds,” he mocked.

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah interpreted Napo’s blunder as evidence that the NDC is becoming increasingly attractive to voters, even within the ranks of their political opponents.

To him, Napo’s repeated mistake is a sign of internal struggles within the NPP, and he called on Ghanaians to embrace the NDC for genuine change.

“When an NPP leader like Napo calls on Ghanaians to vote for John Mahama, it shows that the NDC is now the most attractive party,” he said.

The former Energy Minister, during the event, described Atta-Mills as a good man and a great statesman who, in his view, found himself in the wrong party.

The library, located in Ekumfi Otuam, the hometown of the late former President, was solely funded by Napo, as he is popularly known, and supervised by the CEO of the Atta Mills Institute, Samuel Koku Anyidoho.

Speaking at a brief ceremony, Napo eulogized Atta-Mills as an astute statesman who was a gift to Ghana from God himself.

According to him, he was motivated by Koku Anyidoho’s commitment to preserving the legacies of the former president.

He expressed concern over how the NDC, led by its flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, has taken credit for every project associated with the late president, making it seem as if he did nothing for the country.

The CEO of the Atta Mills Institute, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, thanked Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his efforts in honouring President Mills.

He challenged the late president’s brothers to point to a single thing they have done to preserve their brother’s legacy.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, faculty members, students, and representatives of various educational bodies, marking a significant moment in the institution’s history.

NAPO says it’s “Haram” for Muslims living in Dagbon to vote NDC https://www.adomonline.com/true-napo-says-its-haram-for-muslims-living-in-dagbon-to-vote-ndc/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 10:49:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473237 Claim: Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, asserted that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) uses Muslims for votes and suggested that it would be “haram” (an abomination) for any Muslim living in Dagbon to support the party.

His comments have drawn widespread criticism, with many condemning them as divisive and inflammatory.

Verdict: True! DUBAWA’s checks showed that during a campaign tour in Northern Ghana, NAPO asserted that Muslims who live in Dagbon and vote for the NDC would be sinning according to Islamic law.

The statements have been confirmed as accurate based on video evidence.

A recent statement by Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 elections, has sparked widespread discussion across social media.

The controversy centres on claims that Dr Opoku Prempeh accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of harbouring anti-Muslim sentiments and urging Muslim communities not to vote for them.

During his visit to Yaa Naa Bukali Mahama II, Overlord of Dagbon in Yendi in Northern Ghana, NAPO asserted that Muslims who live in the community and vote for the NDC would be committing haram (an abomination).

There has been a raging controversy over whether the vice presidential candidate made such a comment. There are also assertions that the comment was limited to Muslims who live in Dagbon.

Here are some of the comments;

However, comments on social media after NAPO’s speech are quoting “Muslims” who vote for the NDC will be committing haram, instead of “Muslims who live in Dagbon,” like NAPO originally said.

Reacting to NAPO’s speech, an X user, with the handle @KyeiMeshack, commented on Nov. 8, 2024:

“Running mate of the NPP, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), stated that if you’re a Muslim and you vote for the NDC, it is a haram.”

Additionally, a media outlet on X page, with the handle @UTVGhana, captioned NAPO’s speech, “If You Are A Muslim And You Vote For NDC, It Is Haram” – NAPO.”

Another media outlet on X page, with the handle @YopooNews, quoted the video of NAPO’s visit to the Overlord of Dagbon; “According to NAPO, if you’re a Muslim and you vote for NDC, it’s haram.”

The video being circulated transcribes as, “If you are a Muslim and you live in Dagbon, you are a Dagbon, and you take your thumbprint, and you vote for NDC, it is a haram,” indicating that the message NAPO put across during his visit to the Overlord of Dagbon, was directed to the Muslims living in Dagbon and not all Muslims in Ghana.

Due to the sensitive nature of the comment and the attendant controversy, DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim.

Verification

DUBAWA analysed recent footage from a campaign rally in Dagbon in the Northern Region on Nov. 8, 2024, and can confirm that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, indeed incited Muslims living in Dagbon not to vote for the opposition NDC.

“If you are a Muslim and you live in Dagbon, you are a Dagbon, and you take your thumbprint and you vote for NDC, it is a haram.”

He called on the Muslim communities to stand with the NPP to transform their lives.

“By this, if you are an Imam and you pray for John Dramani Mahama to become President instead of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, it is a haram. NDC only uses Muslims for votes,” NAPO added.

Here is a breakdown of the statements:

1. Claim of “Haram” for Muslims living in Dagbon not to vote for NDC

During his speech, Dr Opoku Prempeh described it as “haram” for Muslims living in Dagbon to vote for the NDC, positioning his statement within religious terms to appeal to the Muslim electorate.

“So if you are a young person here, and you want a future for yourself, you want people to recognise where you come, and you come from Larabanga, God has already blessed you. You need the right leader. You need the right leader to make Larabanga and Damango what they should become.

“And that leader is nobody but Abu Jinapor and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. It is possible.” Listen from 3:12 to 3:48.

Conclusion

The claim that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh declared it “haram” for Muslims living in Dagbon to vote for the NDC is true. Footage and records from his rally in the Northern Region substantiate these claims.

Napo is a loose-talker, he needs coaching – Joyce Bawah Mogtari https://www.adomonline.com/napo-is-a-loose-talker-he-needs-coaching-joyce-bawah-mogtari/ Sun, 10 Nov 2024 07:35:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2470248 Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari has taken a swipe at the 2024 running mate of the governing New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for his latest call on Ghanaian Muslims not to vote for John Mahama.

Describing the comments as unguarded, Mogtari said political discourse must be conducted devoid of religious, ethnic or tribal undertones that threaten social cohesion.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is captured in a video addressing some Muslim communities during his campaign tour of the northern part of Ghana.

In the said video, Dr Prempeh reportedly encouraged Muslims to choose Bawumia over Mahama because it is forbidden for Muslims to vote for John Mahama who is a non-Muslim.

Speaking to the media on day one of John Mahama’s tour of the Central Region, Joyce Bawah said “Let me say something about the NPP’s running mate. I think he is a loose talker, I think he needs some coaching, and I think he needs to grow up a little bit more. I also think he needs to appreciate the sensibilities of our society.

Napo has exhibited enormous arrogance and ignorance since his nomination as running mate. I shudder to think what else he is going to be saying next” she lamented.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari further indicated that Dr Opoku Prempeh lacks the traits to occupy the high office of vice president and his utterances highly suggest that due diligence was not done before he was selected as the party’s running mate.

“It is obvious that he has nothing to offer the NPP. Let’s also try as much as possible to vet the people we nominate for high office.

Since he was nominated, from the very first day, all the missteps largely tell us that he is not ready for high office” Joyce added.

She emphasized the party’s vision for governance rooted in collaboration and community-led development.

Mrs. Adade-Prempeh expressed deep respect for traditional rulers as custodians of Ghanaian heritage and highlighted their unique role as unifying figures within communities.

“Our traditional rulers are important pillars in our society,” she affirmed, “and must be supported in every possible way to positively impact the lives of our people.”

She noted that this partnership is central to the NPP’s governance approach under Dr. Bawumia, aiming to integrate traditional leadership in decisions that affect local communities.

She assured traditional leaders that a Dr. Bawumia administration would continue to enhance the role of chiefs and other traditional authorities.

“Efficient and effective governance requires that we honor and support those at the heart of our communities,” she added.

She pledged that under a Bawumia presidency, traditional authorities would play a clear role in guiding local development and building resilient communities.

Mrs. Adade-Prempeh and her delegation also engaged with thousands of fisherfolk in the constituency, presenting the NPP’s commitments to the fishing industry and related support initiatives.

To support the fishing community, she discussed provisions within the NPP manifesto focused on sustainable fishing practices, resource allocation, and access to financial and technical resources.

She emphasized the NPP’s commitment to ensuring a thriving fishing industry that contributes to the local economy.

“We know that for Ghana to prosper, every community must be empowered to flourish,” she told the gathering, acknowledging the critical role of fisherfolk in the national economy.

Mrs. Adade-Prempeh distributed NPP-branded items to the fisherfolk, expressing appreciation for their hard work and resilience while underscoring the party’s dedication to community-driven development.

Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has appealed to the Yaa Naa, Mahama Abukari Gariba II, for prayers to ensure peace prevails during the upcoming elections.

In his remarks, Dr. Opoku Prempeh addressed claims that the NPP has historically been at odds with northern communities, asserting that the party has consistently delivered on its promises to the region.

Speaking at the start of his four-day tour in the Bono Region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted Bawumia’s 16 years of experience in governance, asserting that his dedication and understanding of the presidency make him an ideal candidate.

Napo dismissed claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that Bawumia’s inexperience and tribal background should be cause for concern.

He noted that Bawumia has faithfully served in his current role, learning essential aspects of governance and leadership that will allow him to excel as President.

During the rally, former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Kwadwo Adjei Darko, also weighed in, challenging former President John Mahama’s campaign platform.

He argued that Mahama lacks a solid record to campaign on and pointed out what he views as an absence of substantial policy proposals from the NDC.

Further supporting the calls for unity and stability, Bono Regional NPP Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, commonly known as Abronye, accused the NDC of attempting to stir unrest ahead of the election.

He assured supporters that the NPP would continue to prioritize the well-being of Ghanaians and focus on peace and good governance amidst the election season.

Speaking to Nana Kwadwo Jantuah on Nhyira Fm’s KuroYiMuNsem show, the outspoken politician indicated the party is not worried about how Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh delivers his campaign message.

According to him, it is a strategy to draw criticism to himself while the presidential candidate goes around to campaign smoothly without distractions.

“Dr. Bawumia shielded Nana Addo, and NAPO is doing the same for Bawumia. He is intentionally drawing criticism to himself. This is what many people don’t understand but it is a strategy we have employed to achieve a certain goal. You know, this will help Dr. Bawumia in his campaign,” he stated.

He further revealed plans to prepare Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh for leadership position in the party. He believes the party’s running mate has a lot of potential to lead the party but needs some form of training which has begun.

“Dr. Bawumia’s training has made him a leading candidate of the party and we are replicating this with NAPO. It is clear that every good leader need grooming and that’s exactly what the party is doing to make sure that the country has competent leaders to steer affairs,” he stated.

Fact card about Napo making ethnocentric comments about Gas, Ewes, false! https://www.adomonline.com/fact-card-about-napo-making-ethnocentric-comments-about-gas-ewes-false/ Tue, 29 Oct 2024 09:48:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465591 Claim: Multiple accounts on social media have shared a fact card claiming former Energy Minister and running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has called the Ga and Ewe tribes as Ghana’s problem, adding that, they should have never been part of the country.

Verdict:

False! Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has not made such a statement. An advanced google image search by DUBAWA reveals, no credible media house has published the story. Kapital Radio’s manager Korsi Asiseh has asked Ghanaians to disregard any viral political fact card which cannot be found on their website.

Full-Text

Multiple accounts on social media have shared a viral postcard with a photo of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh tagging the Ga and Ewe ethnic tribes as those who are causing the majority of problems in Ghana.

Bearing the theme, tags and digital stamps purporting to be that of Kapital Radio 97.1 FM, it read: “Ga and Ewes are Ghana’s problem. Historically, they shouldn’t have been part of Ghana”

DUBAWA’s research, however, revealed that popular media influencer social media user @dejoh36 with the name Gideon, with over 12,000 followers, was the first to put out the postcard on October 27, 2024, at 07:44 PM on X (formerly Twitter).

With the fact card posted on his page, Gideon had garnered over 78,900 views, 239 comments, and 286 retweets including 2,200 likes as of October 28, 2024.

A day after he shared the post, Gideon, who describes himself as a Twitter Democrat, had many believing the post card.  DUBAWA had to investigate since it had the potential to mislead.

Reacting to the post, an X user, ‘always_your_highness’ with handle @hishighnessssss replied on October 28, 2024:

“That’s not what we are talking about here. What does Ga and Ewe got to do with fixing the country? With all due respect, this statement sounds unnecessary. Let’s normalize discussing innovative topics. The statement from this man is a drop in the bucket”

Additionally, one X user, The Ronaldo Era with the handle @DerbyWinnings also had this comment to make on October 28, 2024:

“This is the reason why Ghana’s problems are real problems because, the Ashanti’s think they are better than any tribe in Ghana, tbh these two tribes are the ones that are more truthful than these guys but I guess we aren’t prepared to have this convo yet.”

Another X user, Renato with handle @xie_rwy, who didn’t know what to believe about the post card said: “Charlie this is below belt, I’m not sure he actually said this. Let focus on selling our candidate than resorting to the NPP’s kind of politics.”

Meanwhile, other platforms equally shared the post card on X, and they can be found herehere and here, It can also be seen on Meta’s platform Threads, here.

Verification

DUBAWA’s investigation showed that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to New Patriotic Party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, hasn’t made such tribal statement on his campaign tours ahead of the December 7 elections.

The media outlet’s Managing Director, Korsi Asiseh, maintained on their website that controversial political stories on flyers purportedly created by them are false and charged readers to always cross-check on their website to see if that story is there.

DUBAWA checked the website and also screened every recent social media post on Kapital Radio platforms, but the flier or postcard in question could not be found on any of their official pages.

“Beware of fake flyers circulating about our website putting up political stories,” he cautioned the public.

The findings of DUBAWA’s Google keyword search revealed that no reputable media organisation in the West African country has reported on Napo’s alleged comment.

Meanwhile, DUBAWA later contacted the originator of the post on X, @dejoh36 with the name Gideon, who shared the flier to find out his source, but he is yet to respond to the inquiry.

Conclusion

Former Energy Minister and running mate to New Patriotic Party’s Presidential Candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has not made any tribal statement accusing two of the popular ethnic tribes, Ga and Ewes, as those causing problems in the country.

Parliament is an intellectual platform, not a boxing ring – NAPO to NDC MPs https://www.adomonline.com/parliament-is-an-intellectual-platform-not-a-boxing-ring-napo-to-ndc-mps/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 15:30:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2464489 Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has criticised the Minority over their conduct during proceeding on Tuesday, October 22.

The Manhyia South Member of Parliament described the action is an ‘unruly conduct’, emphasised that Parliament is an intellectual platform and not a boxing ring.

Napo, as he is popularly known, said this while addressing students of the Pantang Nursing and Midwifery Training College, as part of his Greater Accra Regional tour.

“The free-for-all-fight and bloodshed they [NDC Minority] were expecting in parliament last Tuesday, we didn’t give them. We didn’t give them because we are disciplined and mature. We understand that Parliament is a place for intellectual debate, not a boxing ring. Unlike them, the NPP always prioritizes the peace and stability of this country,” he noted.

Napo who has served as an MP for almost 16 years, urged his colleagues on the NDC side, to stick to their primary mandate of enacting relevant legislation and championing the welfare of their constituents.

According to him, engaging in fights and other violent confrontations in Parliament is most reprehensible and unbecoming of honourable members.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs on Tuesday took over the Majority side of the house following the declaration of four seats vacant despite a Supreme Court order that stay its execution.

Incensed by the move, the Majority caucus led by Efuttu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin abandoned the chamber pending a statement by Speaker Alban Bagbin on the situation.

However, Speaker Bagbin upon arrival adjourned the House sine die, stating they did not have the numbers to take decisions on the business of the day.

The Majority caucus has since requested a recall to pave way for the consideration of urgent government business.

Dr. Prempeh made this declaration on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, when a delegation from the Eminent Persons Group of the Christian Council of Ghana paid a courtesy call on the NPP at the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Office in Accra.

In his remarks, Dr. Prempeh emphasised the NPP’s strong track record of deepening democracy in Ghana, citing how the party has historically handled electoral processes.

“In 2008, the NPP lost the elections by the narrowest of margins—just 23,000 votes—but we accepted the outcome, and power was peacefully transferred from President Kufuor to the late President Mills,” he said.

Dr. Prempeh added that the NPP remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the unity and stability of Ghana during the 2024 elections.

“Our track record speaks for itself. The NPP is a party that values peace, and we will continue to uphold this principle in the upcoming elections, ensuring the nation remains united,” he stressed.

The NPP’s Head of Electoral Affairs, Mr. Peter Mac Manu, also addressed the delegation, condemning the baseless attacks by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the Electoral Commission.

He noted that, many of these allegations have proven to be frivolous and driven by political mischief.

Mr. Mac Manu urged the Eminent Persons Group to denounce all inflammatory rhetoric that could threaten the peace of the country in the lead-up to the elections.

Adding to the discussion, NPP General Secretary Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong reiterated the party’s unwavering commitment to a peaceful electoral process.

He condemned the NDC’s confrontational stance on the elections and encouraged all stakeholders to prioritise the nation’s peace above political expediency.

The Christian Council delegation, led by Rev. Enoch Thompson, expressed satisfaction with the NPP’s assurance of peace and thanked the party for its willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.

Rev. Thompson reaffirmed the Christian Council’s commitment to holding all political parties accountable to a peace pact ahead of the 2024 elections, ensuring that the process is conducted in a spirit of unity and respect for democratic principles.

The former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development said she observed Napo as he is popularly known at Cabinet meetings during his days as Education Minister.

In this regard, she can confidently say that Napo is a man of humility who takes criticism in good faith and doesn’t get upset or angry.

Madam Mahama was speaking at an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Memphis, Tennessee, on the sidelines of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s visit to the city.

According to her, she finds it difficult to believe the public notion that Dr. Opoku Prempeh is arrogant.

“I watched him at cabinet meetings and I will tell you what I know about him. He is humble, and he takes criticism in good faith without being angry or upset. When people say he is arrogant, I find it difficult to believe that,” she said.

Napo revisits Comprehensive Sexuality Education saga; insists NDC introduced it [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/napo-revisits-comprehensive-sexuality-education-saga-insists-ndc-introduced-it-video/ Thu, 17 Oct 2024 13:18:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461339 Former Education Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has denied any role in the introduction of the Comprehensive Sexually Education (CSE) programme.

The Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is insisting that, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) initiated the controversial programme into the curriculum of public basic schools.

The CSE was a curriculum-based process designed to teach and learn about the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social aspects of sexuality.

The aim was to equip children and young people with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to make informed decisions about their health and well-being, develop respectful social and sexual relationships, and understand their rights.

The NPP government in 2019 came under public pressure over claims that it is seeking to execute a secret Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) agenda through the introduction of CSE.

The guideline document for the teaching of CSE, according to religious organisations and anti-LGBT movement, had topics and modules that run counter to the moral fibre of the Ghanaian society.

But according to Dr Prempeh, the CSE was initiated by the erstwhile Mills and Mahama administration before he assumed office in 2016.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Napo as he is popularly known said it is false for anybody to say he or the NPP government introduced it.

“CSE was not approved as part of the new curriculum. The Mills & Mahama government introduced it into our curriculum after taking money from UN. All these were done before I took over.

“When the NPP assumed office, we didn’t do any curriculum amendment; it was a total replacement of the curriculum. But the NDC had gone for money and they did the guidelines, trained the teachers and everything,” he claimed.

Napo further alleged that, the NDC had strategically placed church leaders and Imams in various regions to influence teachers in the implementation of this curriculum.

He added that, Cabinet had not approved the CSE, hence doesn’t know why he was criticised for introducing it.

“The best WASSCE results happened under the first cohort of the free SHS policy and consistently, we have achieved 50% pass in the core subjects from 30-35% under the NDC.

“The achievement with free SHS has been so successful. There were two things that were prevalent in Ghana but now we barely hear of them. When was the last time you heard of armed robbery or a newspaper headline with teenage pregnancy?” he quizzed.

Acknowledging that there have been challenges and the policy can be improved, Napo expressed hope that under a Dr Mahamudu Bawumia government, a lot more would be done to consolidate the gains made.

Mahama introduced electricity VAT – Napo https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-introduced-electricity-vat-napo/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 20:38:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461134 Former Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has stated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not responsible for value-added tax (VAT) on electricity.

According to him, it was a policy introduced by the erstwhile John Mahama administration.

Despite not stating the specific year, Napo as he is popularly known disclosed this on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday.

The NPP Vice Presidential candidate explained that, although the ruling government inherited it, they never implemented it until a recommendation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“When we announced the implementation, the NDC went haywire, forgetting that they introduced it but President Akufo-Addo never rolled it out. So it’s possible for a government to introduce a policy without implementing it,” he said.

On January 1, former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta instructed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to implement the VAT, with the aim of generating revenue for the COVID-19 recovery program.

The announcement sparked public outcry amidst threats of demonstration, industrial and calls for the government to rescind the decision.

Amidst the growing calls for a reversal, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama said the move will only pile up the cost of electricity, which has seen a 29 percent increase.

He argued that, the increase in the electricity bill will make the cost of doing business in Ghana unbearable.

Government subsequently succumbed to the pressure and suspended policy.
