Mr Ibu’s funeral committee debunks claims of begging for money for his burial https://www.adomonline.com/mr-ibus-funeral-committee-debunks-claims-of-begging-for-money-for-his-burial/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 02:44:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2407897 The Central Planning Committee (CPC), along with notable friends and family members of the late Nollywood actor, John Okafor, widely known as Mr. Ibu, have strongly denied reports circulating on social media that the family is begging for funds to cover his burial expenses.

The CPC and the Okafor family have distanced themselves from publications suggesting financial desperation, labeling them as malicious and misleading.

A recent social media post by a user identified as Mazitundeednut alleged that the family was soliciting public donations for Mr. Ibu’s burial.

This claim has been vehemently refuted by the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Monday Diamond Ani, who criticized the publication as an attempt to tarnish the family’s reputation and portray them as beggars.

Ani emphasized that the publication was designed to demean the Okafor family, stating that such stories are “manipulating, malicious, fabricated and engineered by the evil gang against Mr. Ibu even while on sick bed and after his death.”

He highlighted that, despite the significant financial burden of Mr. Ibu’s medical treatment across various hospitals in Nigeria, comprehensive plans for his burial are already underway.

“It is a fact that a fund is being raised to support the burial of Mr. Ibu which is customary in Igbo land where well-wishers will be contributing funds to support the burial.”

He clarified that in Igbo tradition, it is common for community members to contribute towards burial expenses through various forms of support, including financial assistance and logistics, making it a cultural practice rather than an indication of financial distress.

Ani concluded by reaffirming the family’s commitment to honoring Mr. Ibu’s legacy appropriately, stating, “Mr. Ibu was the king of comedy movies in Africa and represented Nigeria as far as motion pictures are concerned. He will be buried not like a kid, but as the legend that he was.”

The Central Planning Committee has arranged several notable events to honor Mr. Ibu, including the erection of billboards throughout Enugu State and a star-studded tribute performance at the Base Event Center in Enugu.

Additionally, a novelty football match between celebrities and Rangers International Football Club will take place at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on June 25th, followed by a night of tribute on June 26th.

Mr Ibu’s last words on death bed https://www.adomonline.com/mr-ibus-last-words-on-death-bed/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 09:45:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2364488 A last video taken of Mr Ibu shortly before his death has popped up on social media fueling anguish among his fans.

Known privately as Charles Okafor, the actor spent his last days in a hospital bed, struggling with blood clot in his amputated leg.

As though he was ready to accept his fate, Mr Ibu shared profound message on life’s journey and the inevitability of death.

“I don’t know where to start, but everything happens exactly in God’s own time. When the time comes, it has come,” Mr. Ibu told musician Rudeboy of PSquare fame.

Rudeboy, a fellow entertainer and close friend of Mr Ibu, had been a constant source of support during his hospitalization.

While Mr. Ibu’s family was grappling with financial struggles and embezzlement, Rudeboy quietly took care of all medical bills without seeking recognition on social media.

In view of this, Mr. Ibu’s final words were messages of blessings and good wishes to Rudeboy, acknowledging his selflessness and kindness.

“If you don’t go to Heaven, call me Nama. You will go to Heaven and we will sit down in the presence of the angels and we will eat together. Your life will never change,” he prayed.

Even in the face of death, Mr. Ibu’s spirit remained undaunted as he managed to crack a joke.

Mr Ibu’s son, daughter arrested again for hacking his bank app to divert funds https://www.adomonline.com/mr-ibus-son-daughter-arrested-again-for-hacking-his-bank-app-to-divert-funds/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 19:19:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2347036 Police operatives in Ikoyi, Lagos State have arrested the children of actor, John Okafor aka Mr. Ibu’s for allegedly defrauding him of the sum of N55 million.

The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCID), Alagbon, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

The police said on September 6, 2023, a petition was received against two of Mr Ibu’s sons, Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Valentine Okafor, as well as his adopted daughter, Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu.

They alleged conspired to defraud Mr. Ibu of the donations made for his treatment while being on sick bed.

Mr. Ibu’s wife, Mrs Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor was initially managing the funds to defray the medical bills of Mr. Ibu and sustain the family.

However, along the line, Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu manipulated Mrs Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, took possession of Mr. Ibu’s phone, and hacked into the banking details therein.

The police added that, they thereafter re-installed the mobile banking applications of Mr. Ibu on Daniel’s phone and wiped off the banking applications originally installed on Mr. Ibu’s phone.

They, thereby, took direct and full charge of banking activities of Mr. Ibu in relation to the funds being donated by members of the public in support of his medicals.

At the time of their arrest, the police say they have diverted N55million, and squandered a total of N5million on “questionable transactions”.

They were granted bail in the sum of N15m with two sureties in like sum while case was adjourned to 11th March, 2024.

Meanwhile, the case file has been forwarded to the Office of Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

Fresh update on Mr Ibu after leg amputation https://www.adomonline.com/fresh-update-on-mr-ibu-after-leg-amputation/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 11:50:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345298 Nollywood actor Ken Erics visited his veteran colleague, John Okafor popularly known as Mr Ibu, who returned home after months in hospital.

In October 2023, Mr Ibu revealed he was battling with a life-threatening illness. He spoke from a hospital bed and cried out for financial assistance over his medical condition.

Several people donated for the ailing actor, including the Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Foundation, which paid all of Mr Ibu’s medical expenses.

But on 6 November 2023, Mr Ibu’s family announced that one of the actor’s legs was amputated after undergoing seven surgeries.

Since then, he has remained in the hospital, where he has been recuperating.

A video shared on actor Ken Eric’s Instagram page provided a much-needed update on Mr Ibu’s recovery after his leg amputation.

In the video, Mr Ibu sat in the living room, chatting with his junior colleague.

It is the first time the comic actor has been captured on video since his doctors discharged him from the hospital.

His family has yet to issue any formal statement about his health condition.

Background

On 6 November 2023, Mr Ibu’s leg was amputated, barely a month after he solicited prayers and financial assistance from his fans.

He solicited prayers and funds because doctors had recommended the amputation of his leg.

Announcing the leg amputation on the actor’s Instagram page, his family said the amputation was to increase his chances of recovery.

They said the development was complex but needed to accept it as Mr Ibu’s new reality to keep him alive.

On 17 December 203, the family of the 62-year-old actor further revealed the reason behind his inability to be flown abroad for additional treatment.

The family explained in a statement that doctors deemed him ‘Not Fit to Fly,’ rendering it challenging to arrange his departure for advanced medical treatment due to the airlines’ refusal to transport him.

According to the family, the cause of the illness was not diabetes but a persistent clotting of blood in Mr Ibu’s leg, stemming from diseased blood vessels, along with other health challenges that posed a significant risk to his life.

]]>
Mr Ibu’s family reacts to amputation of his two legs https://www.adomonline.com/mr-ibus-family-reacts-to-amputation-of-his-two-legs/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 12:25:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2333797 The family of the comic actor, John Okafor, aka Mr. Ibu, has addressed misconceptions surrounding Mr. Ibu’s health, stating that contrary to circulating reports on social media, the actor has undergone amputation on only one leg, not both.

They added that, the initial amputation proved insufficient to resolve his health challenges, leading to a subsequent amputation on the same leg.

The family also refuted claims attributing Mr. Ibu’s illness to diabetes disclosing that the actor has been contending with clotting of the blood in his leg, attributed to diseased blood vessels.

This was disclosed in a statement on the actor’s Instagram page on Saturday, December 16.

It read, “We wish to express our sincere gratitude to well-meaning Nigerians and the general public for your immense contributions, physically, spiritually, and most above all financially on getting our daddy Mr John Okafor (Mr Ibu) back on his feet again.

“We wish to correct some misconceptions making rounds on social media concerning the current state of our father’s health.

“First, we would like to state that our daddy wasn’t amputated on both legs but only one. The first amputation didn’t completely correct his health predicament so the doctors had to go ahead to amputate the same leg further to ensure we didn’t lose him.

“Daddy’s cause of sickness is also not diabetes but he’s had constant clotting of the blood in his leg (diseased blood vessels) and other health challenges posing risk to his life, therefore the need for the amputation.

“Lastly, the only reason why the family has not flown him out of the country to date is that the doctors have tagged him ‘Not Fit to Fly’.

“This tag has made it extremely impossible to get him out of the country for advanced treatment as no airline will fly him.

“Daddy is currently admitted at one of the biggest and best hospitals we’ve got in Nigeria as of today and the hospital has availed him a pool of very astute professionals.

“As Daddy is recuperating, we urge his friends, colleagues, fans, and Nigerians at large to keep him in their prayers and peddle down on unconfirmed reports concerning our dad’s health.

“Thank you Nigerians you all have been very supportive this period. God bless you all.”

Previous reports in October indicated that Mr. Ibu successfully underwent five surgeries and was scheduled to be flown abroad for further treatment.

Mr Ibu undergoes another leg surgery https://www.adomonline.com/mr-ibu-undergoes-another-leg-surgery/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 12:24:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2333801 Veteran Nollywood actor and comedian, John Okafor, better known as Mr Ibu, has undergone another leg surgery.

The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, told Vanguard newspaper that the actor underwent another surgery to amputate further the leg he had surgery on in November.

Mr Rollas mentioned that the actor now struggles to speak.

Rollas further stated that anxiety among actors has escalated due to Amaechi Muonagor’s declining health.

The veteran actor has been hospitalised for over two months at Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi.

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria noted that they have accepted the grim situation of the two ailing actors, whose health reportedly worsen daily.

Also confirming Mr Ibu’s leg amputation on X (formerly Twitter), Charly Boy urged men to prioritise their health.

Charly Boy emphasised that the actor is now legless, expressing concern and questioning God about Mr Ibu’s situation.

Background

Since revealing his health struggles, Mr Ibu has undergone multiple surgeries and is currently in intensive care.

On November 6, 2023, Mr Ibu’s family announced on his Instagram that the actor’s leg was amputated due to health reasons.

They shared that accepting the new reality was tough but necessary for Mr Ibu’s well-being.

The decision followed an appeal for prayers and financial support after doctors recommended the amputation of his leg.

In March 2022, Mr Ibu was hospitalised at Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre Abuja, blaming poisoning by his ‘village people’ and relatives for some of his issues.

He claims to have been poisoned twice during trips home to his hometown in Nkanu West, Enugu State and even kidnapped and poisoned at an event in Nnewi.

These incidents, he believes, are behind his protruding stomach, but despite these challenges, the Enugu-born actor has enjoyed a successful career in Nollywood, starring in over 200 films including ‘’Mr Ibu’, and ‘Mr Ibu and His Son, and ‘9 Wives’.

About a month ago, a critical decision was made to amputate one of his legs to save his life.

Unfortunately, the first procedure didn’t entirely resolve his health issues, leading to another amputation of the same leg.

His family made disclosed this in a press statement to address misconceptions surrounding Mr Ibu’s health.

The statement said diabetes is not the cause of Mr Ibu’s health struggles, instead, it is a recurring blood clotting in his leg.

Though the family was hoping to fly him abroad for further treatment, doctors said Mr. Ibu is “not fit to fly”.

The comic actor is currently on admission at a prominent Nigerian hospital, receiving care from a team of expert professionals.

The family has requested prayers and urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified reports about Mr Ibu’s health.

They also expressed immense gratitude to Nigerians for their unwavering support during this challenging time.

Mr Ibu’s adopted daughter, two sons arrested over donations https://www.adomonline.com/mr-ibus-adopted-daughter-two-sons-arrested-over-donations/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 16:40:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2323549 Emeka Chochoo, the former manager of Nollywood actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has shed light on the reasons behind the recent police invitation of Mr Ibu’s adopted daughter, Jasmine Chioma Okafor, and his two sons, Daniel and Val.

The trio was reportedly invited for questioning regarding the management of funds donated by well-meaning Nigerians for Mr Ibu’s medical treatment.

The funds were intended for Mr Ibu’s medical expenses, as the actor recently underwent surgery resulting in the amputation of one of his legs.

The situation escalated when it was suggested that Mr Ibu’s wife, Stella Maris Okafor, instigated the police involvement.

Stella Maris allegedly demanded transparency and accountability regarding the donated funds and accused Jasmine of diverting the money for personal use.

It was further claimed that Stella Maris intended to use the funds to purchase a new house.

“Mr. Ibu’s wife alleged that Jasmine moved N300 million out of the account. Ibu’s wife allegedly wanted them to buy her a new house from the money contributed so far for Ibu’s treatments. That’s why she arrested Jasmine,”Doris Ogala said.

In response to the unfolding events, Emeka Chochoo clarified that the police invitation was not tantamount to an arrest and emphasized that the police had summoned Jasmine, Daniel, and Val to inquire about Mr Ibu’s account.

Val, however, was reportedly excluded from the situation as he had recently returned to the country and was unaware of the ongoing developments.

“Yes, they were all invited by the police. I won’t call it arrest; the police invited them over Mr Ibu’s account. However, Val is left out as he knows nothing about what’s been happening. He just returned to the country,” Emeka Chochoo told punch.

I have not been able to reach any of them,” the ex-manager added.

The controversy surrounding the management of the donated funds took an unexpected turn, considering that Mr Ibu’s wife and adopted daughter had previously joined forces to appeal for financial support from Nigerians.

The plea came after Mr Ibu underwent surgery, and the actor’s health challenges prompted an outpouring of generosity from well-wishers.

After the actor’s health challenge was made public, well-wishers, fans, and Nigerians in general rallied to donate generously for his treatment and recovery.

However, his wife, Stella said she had no access to the funds, as Jasmine has taken absolute control and has failed to render account to the family.

She accused Jasmine of sidelining her in all activities related to her husband, Mr Ibu, and trying to make her a stranger in her own marriage.

Stella’s remarks come after she was accused of misappropriating funds allocated for her husband’s treatment, including making plans to buy herself a car.

She admitted to requesting for a car, but clarified that it was not for her selfish gains, but to make transporting her husband to and from the hospitals easier.

Stella further alleged that, she is being blackmailed by Jasmine, adding that till date she has no information on the status of the bank account or the millions donated into it.

Some years back, the entertainer was hospitalised in a similar manner after his staff allegedly poisoned him on set.

He suffered severe damages to his stomach.

What I learnt after my two marriages crashed – Mr Ibu opens up https://www.adomonline.com/what-i-learnt-after-my-two-marriages-crashed-mr-ibu-opens-up/ Wed, 16 Feb 2022 16:17:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2080865 Legendary actor Mr Ibu has opened up on the life lessons he learnt from his two failed marriages.

Mr Ibu’s wives dumped him after both bore a child each for him, over his then substandard financial status.

This, he said, has enlightened him on a man’s responsibilities as the head of the house, and how to please his partners in all aspects.

“My first and second marriages failed; they (my wives) left me after having a child each for me. I wondered what made them make such decisions and they made me know that it was because I didn’t have money. This made me know that I have to be able to keep my family and provide for them and make sure that they are satisfied and not have any reason to look down on me,” he said.

Though the incident crashed his spirits and made him doubt his self-worth, Mr Ibu said he had built confidence, adding “I never miss any opportunity to learn every day and this makes me a better parent.”

He said in an interview on Vocal Media that his experience also shaped him on his journey into fatherhood.

Now single-handedly caring for both children, the renowned actor said he is now responsible in life and has parted ways with some habits he adored when he was single.

“Also, my children look up to me, learn from me and emulate me. I have to show them that I am responsible so that they can be proud of who I am. God says you should nurture them, provide for them and that is what I do. Fatherhood makes you a responsible person. We have fathers who are responsible and there are others who are irresponsible and careless.

“When I started my journey into fatherhood, I was a careless father, but by God’s grace I was able to retrace my steps, built up myself and today I am proudly a responsible father. If you are a careless father, who doesn’t care for his children, who doesn’t have love for his family, who doesn’t have love and passion for building a home, such a person is not a man. I have been able to live up to my responsibilities as a father by providing for my family and making sure they never lack.”

Known privately as John Ikechukwu Okafor, the veteran, blowing his own trumpet after receiving compliments on his looks despite being 61, said he owes his stature to God and dieting.

That aside, he revealed his love for sex and sportsmanship has got him glowing and looking young.

“Persistence and true spirit of sportsmanship have kept me on. Aside that, I’m also sweet in bed, I am good and very proud of myself. Try me and you will be amazed. I deliver very well. I can drive women crazy,” he said.

A diet plan he has kept years after he was poisoned, he said, is a contributing factor.

Mr Ibu experienced a rare ailment after he was allegedly poisoned several times by his staff.

For him to step on the path to recovery, he quit consuming alcohol, sugary drinks and smoking and he said he has, till this date, maintained that eating pattern.

“People keep asking the secret of my good looks, but the fact remains that I don’t take alcohol or sugary drinks. I don’t smoke. I also don’t take carbohydrates. I live on vegetables and smoothies. All these keep me going and looking very healthy,” he said.

For this, he believes he has potentials of living to a 100 years old, adding that his mother died at a ripe age of 91.

“It’s by God’s power not by any man. I don’t know what is going to happen when I get to 100 years but I know that I want to leave a history in this country. I want to leave a history in this country before I die. All Nigerians, anybody that sees me, I wish you good age. Ripe age. I wish you good luck for any business you’re doing. I wish you good friends, wonderful friends, that would be material to your person as you live,” he prayed.

Scooper - Nigeria Entertainment News: “This looks so unhealthy” – Mr Ibu scares fans with his huge potbelly

After fully recovering, Mr Ibu shocked fans and the entire Nollywood industry when he confirmed he was indeed dying, but from an assassination attempt.

“I do not take alcohol, but my tummy starting protruding. I took so many medicines before it started coming down. It was then I was informed I had consumed a slow poison,” he said.

Mr Ibu pointed the perpetrators as his enemies who employed the services of his staff to lace his food with the dangerous substances.

An ‘ignorant’ Mr Ibu said it started when he started vomiting and losing balance after one of his staff served him lunch.

Another instance, he felt a worse reaction which forced him to scream for help, but neither of his staff came to his rescue despite seeing him fall many times in the office.

It was a quick call to his dancers who drove to his office to rush him to the hospital after he had already blacked out on the pavement.

The actor said he was left with no option than to sack all his workers and employ his sister to take over his business while he was recuperating.

However, Mr Ibu said he has forgiven all his enemies and the only one they have to face is his God who stepped in.
