NPP members who voted against Mike Oquaye were just bitter – NPP MP [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-members-who-voted-against-mike-oquaye-were-just-bitter-npp-mp-audio/ Fri, 08 Jan 2021 11:50:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1902169

Member of Parliament (MP) for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, has expressed disappointment in persons who voted against Professor Mike Oquaye as Speaker of Parliament.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem on Friday, Mr Nyindam said persons who voted against the former Speaker had their own individual grudges with the former Speaker and not that Alban Bagbin is better than Professor Oquaye.

“If not for the fact that some people hold grudges against the former Speaker, I cannot fathom why they would vote against someone their own party has selected,” he said.

“As a party, I think we really don’t understand what happened. As an MP, you should know better and not allow someone to influence you. I think those people who voted for Alban Bagbin were just bitter. They had their own individual bitterness about some big wigs in the party and in such a crucial moment, I think they could have just overlooked their bitterness and considered the party’s interest, but unfortunately, they didn’t,”  he added.

To the Deputy Majority Whip, votes cast by members were supposed to be shown and wondered why yesterday’s voting was made secret.

Asked if Mr Bagbin will be able to handle Parliament fairly, he said: “Alban Bagbin will be able to handle Parliament but I have difficulty in the fairness part. The NDC proposed Alban and it will get to a time, there will be individual and party interests and so I can’t confirm if he will be fair but I know he will handle things well per the rules we have in Parliament.”

Last night, the NDC members in parliament emerged victors as their proposal to make former Minority Leader, Mr Bagbin the Speaker of the 8th Parliament was honoured with the majority of votes.

Apparently, some New Patriotic Party MPs voted for the opposition to make that possible since the House is equally split.

AUDIO: Koku Anyidoho salutes Mike Ocquaye over his homosexuality stance https://www.adomonline.com/audio-koku-anyidoho-salutes-mike-ocquaye-over-his-homosexuality-stance/ Mon, 14 May 2018 13:56:17 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1112941

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress [NDC], Koku Anyidoho has lauded Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye, for his remarks on legalizing same-sex marriage in Ghana.

Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has maintained that homosexuality is a form of deformity, which when given special attention, can be ‘cured’.

The renowned academic who has threatened to give up his job as head of the legislature should Parliament consider any attempt to legalize homosexuality, explained that deformity comes in many forms hence persons identified as homosexuals should seek the right medication.

According to him, mental deficiency, physical deficiency, psychological deficiency, are human limitations which cannot turn into a human right for which homosexuals in anti-gay nations should be fighting for their legalization.

“I wouldn’t dispute that because deformity takes many forms – It can be mental deficiency, physical deficiency, psychological deficiency, whatever deficiency.” Prof Mike Oquaye said on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana.

But speaking on Accra-based Neat FM, Mr. Anyidoho saluted Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, for making such a bold statement.

According to him, his former boss Late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills was courageous enough to snub similar requests from former UK Prime Minister, David Cameron.

However, Koku is doubtful the President’s responses will be what Ghanaians look forward to.

“The speaker has struggled to say he won’t because Nana Addo is not being straightforward with the issue and that is why I salute Prof Mike Oquaye for his bold remarks. I’m even sure that is why he has run away to the UK, he is only dodging the question but we all wait to see”, he said.

HOT AUDIO: Mike Ocquaye is Ghana's worse speaker under fourth Republic – Gen Mosquito https://www.adomonline.com/hot-audio-mike-ocquaye-ghanas-worse-speaker-fourth-republic-gen-mosquito/ https://www.adomonline.com/hot-audio-mike-ocquaye-ghanas-worse-speaker-fourth-republic-gen-mosquito/#comments Wed, 21 Feb 2018 10:46:07 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=948971 General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has described Professor Mike Ocquaye as the worse Speaker under the forth Republic.
According to him, Professor Mike Ocquaye is bias towards the minority MPs, especially the Minority Leader and has failed to shed his political cloak in the handling of the affairs of the House.

“Mike Ocquaye is really showing his political colours even in parliament and it has affected the minority in Parliament. His handling of issues and his bias has made him the worse Speaker in the fourth Republic. He is the worse I’ve ever seen as compared to others”, he said on Accra-based Neat FM.
Listen to Asiedu Nketia

This is not the first time such an accusation has been leveled against the Speaker by the opposition NDC.
Mr Asiedu Nketia’s comment comes after Dr. Ayine who sued the State and Martin Amidu over his suitability for the Special Prosecutor job was rebuked by the Speaker Mike Oquaye on Tuesday, February 20, during the proceedings to adopt the recommendation of the Appointment Committee to approve the nomination of Mr. Amidu.
The Speaker rebuked Dr. Ayine for not getting his briefs right before attempting to address the House.
“…so that you can really produce your authority in the manner that will be required by the Supreme Court. And, this is a duty that any serious lawyer will tell you should be done,” admonished the Speaker.

In his reaction, however, the NDC General Secretary said he found the Speaker’s intervention unfair and an insult.
Mr Nketia believes Prof Mike Oquaye is practicing dictatorship in Parliament regardless of the insights he possesses as a prominent lecturer of law in the country.

Likening Prof Mike Oqauye to the late former Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, Asiedu Nketia said that the difference between them was the fact that the former Speaker of Parliament, Mr Adjetey, learned to respect the views of the minority.
“The Speaker is a lawyer but has failed to put into practice what he teaches. He should go and read the notes he taught his law students; he needs to be fair to the minority and allow democracy to prevail”, he urged.

Stop worrying Mike Ocquaye; he is tired – Koku https://www.adomonline.com/stop-worrying-mike-ocquaye-tired-koku/ Mon, 29 Jan 2018 15:27:51 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=880691 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC),  Mr. Koku Anyidoho says Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye is fed up with acting as President of the republic in the absence of the elected President.
According to Koku Anyidoho, official travels by Nana Akufo Addo outside the country needs to be considered as part of performance of president’s duties.
“I think making Mike Ocquaye acting president is useless because if Nana Addo is still on official duties, he can still perform his duties as president of Ghana. Prof Mike Ocquaye has not said he wants to be president. In fact, he is tired and so Nana Addo should stop burdening him” he said on Accra-based Neat FM.
Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye was, for the second time in a week, sworn in as acting President of the republic as President Akufo-Addo left for an AU Summit in Ethiopia Saturday.

Mr. Akufo-Addo left for the investiture of new Liberian President Oppong Weah in Monrovia while his vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is on a medical leave in the UK.

But Mr. Anyidoho argued that the president’s absence does not render him incapable of performing his duty.
He indicated that per the constitution, the Speaker can act as President until Akufo-Addo or Bawumia returns without another swearing-in session.

Speaker to summon security officials over dawn raid on MPs homes https://www.adomonline.com/speaker-summon-security-officials-dawn-raid-mps-homes/ Sat, 29 Jul 2017 13:25:47 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=343451 Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, the Speaker of Parliament, on Friday gave an assurance that he would invite the appropriate security officials to discuss matters relating to the dawn raids of the homes of some members.
The Speaker’s assurance comes at the back of an appeal by Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, Chief Whip of the Minority, calling on him to restrain the security personnel from raids of homes of some MPs on the Minority Side, suspected to be linked to AMERI power deal.
Mr Kobina Tahir Hammond, MP for Adansi Asokwa, former Deputy Minister of Energy and Ranking Member on Energy, has filed an urgent motion in Parliament to have the House rescind the US$ 510 million Ameri power deal, alleging that the cost was bloated.
A t least four persons; Dr Kwabena Donkor, former Minister of Power, and current MP for Pru East, his deputy Mr John Jinapor, MP for Kusawgu, Dr Dominic Ayine, former Deputy Attorney General, and Mr Francis Dzata, the Technical Advisor to the AMERI, have had their homes searched by warrant holding officers in recent times. In some cases, the officers wielded weapons.
On Tuesday, Dr Donkor had his laptops and pen drives seized by the officers when they went to the residence with a search warrant. Mr Francis Dzata also had his laptops seized.
The latest were former Deputy Attorney General, Dominic Ayine and the Ex-Deputy Power Minister John Jinapor, whose houses were invaded on Friday.
It was against this backdrop that the Minority Chief Whip, after the issue was not touched on the proposed Business Statement for next week, raised the matter.
He observed that not only members on the Minority Side, but every Member of Parliament is a law abiding citizen and will not run away from any responsibility to assist the state to do anything.
“But Mr Speaker, the worry is the nature and manner the police is raiding the residence of Members of Parliament at dawn when that citizen is not running, when the person has not been served with a notice that he has been charged. This is a very worrying situation.
“We on this side can reassure not only the police but the whole state that every member on our side is more than willing and ready to assist in any investigation that the Government or the state wants to do but let’s do it in a manner that does not create panic and frustration.
“The invitation of these members on Monday when this House is sitting is an affront to the dignity of this House and will impede the members’ ability to perform their functions. It is with this that I want to humbly appeal to your good office to intervene and assure the Police that we, and I believe every member of Parliament, will be more than happy to assist in any form.”
Prof. Oquaye promised to summon the appropriate officials to explain why some MPs were being “harassed,” explaining that by law and the Standing Orders of Parliament MPs must be treated with some level of decorum even when they are deemed to have committed any offence.
Quoting portions of the Standing Orders, he said MPs are not to be arrested on their way to Parliament, whilst in Parliament or on their way out of Parliament.
“We will want to ascertain whether the legal process was followed. I will, soon after sitting, call the appropriate authority to my office and demand that honourable members are handled appropriately, coterminous with their office as honourable members.”
The Speaker must also be informed before any such arrests are made.
The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu, concurred to the request by the Minority Chief Whip.

Don’t gag minority – ACEPA to Speaker https://www.adomonline.com/dont-gag-minority-acepa-speaker/ Fri, 28 Jul 2017 07:26:57 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=338791 Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye should allow the Minority to express their views on parliamentary matters, Executive Director at the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr Rasheed Draman, has said.
Dr Draman was of the view that even though the smaller Minority cannot have decisions on matters in their favour because of the larger Majority, they should be given the chance to express their opinions on issues.
“All they [Minority] want is to simply have their say, they will not have their way particularly given the numbers that we currently have and whatever it is, I think the Rt Hon Speaker should give the minority the space to have their say in all deliberations in the house,” he told Class News’ Jonas Ofori-Yeboah on 505 on Thursday, 27 July 2o17.
His comment comes in the wake of threats by the Minority who are considering taking steps to impeach the Speaker of the house over claims Prof Oquaye is biased against them.
Ranking Member of the Communications Committee of the house, ABA Fuseini, told Class News’ parliamentary correspondent Ekow Annan that: “For want of a better term, the Speaker has exhibited gross levels of bias that is unbelievable. In the annals of the history of parliament, I have never seen this kind of behaviour. There is always reverence and respect for the leadership and when it comes to the leadership there is a special dispensation Speakers give to the leadership and this is not the first time the Speaker has treated our side with this level of disrespect and I think that we are reaching the end of the rope with that kind of behaviour.
“We are going to be forced to take maybe an unprecedented action that has never happened in the annals of our fourth republic. …We are very close and there are a number of options available to us as Minority to exploit including the impeachment of the Speaker. … [Impeachment] is an option available to us to exercise and when we deem it fit, we are going to exercise it if things don’t change,” Mr Fuseini added.
However, Dr Draman said the recurrent situation where accusations of bias are levelled against a speaker of parliament is bad and needs to be handled tactfully to end such circumstances since it does not augur well for the country’s democratic status.
It will be recalled that the current Majority who were Minority in the immediate past 6th session of parliament also accused the then Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho of partiality.
Dr Draman emphasised that if the minority decides to boycott parliament as they have threatened, and do not “participate in parliamentary deliberations, perhaps we are just going to have a one-sided house and that is not good for the image of our country and for the image of our democracy”.
