Accra Mayor apologises after confrontation with police officer over parking incident https://www.adomonline.com/accra-mayor-apologises-after-confrontation-with-police-officer-over-parking-incident/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 11:25:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553184

Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has issued a public apology following a recent confrontation with an officer from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) over unauthorized parking in the Central Business District.

Addressing journalists during his routine monitoring of the ongoing decongestion exercise, the Mayor clarified that his actions were not intended to target the Police Service but were aimed at ensuring the enforcement of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) bylaws.

“I sincerely apologize for how the situation unfolded. My objective was to uphold the integrity of the decongestion exercise and ensure that no one, including state officials, undermines it,” he said.

The incident reportedly occurred when the Mayor intervened in a situation where some drivers were allegedly allowed to park and load passengers at unapproved locations under the watch of a police officer.

According to the Mayor, such actions undermine the Assembly’s continuous efforts to bring order to the city’s roadways.

Returning to the same spot where the confrontation occurred, Mayor Allotey said his visit was to demonstrate that the law is being applied fairly and consistently.

“You can see today I’m back here again to the same place where the incident happened. The officer wasn’t doing the right thing, and people are still here today because of that,” he stated.

The Mayor reiterated that the AMA is committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including the Ghana Police Service, to ensure that Accra becomes a city where vehicles and pedestrians can move freely and safely.

AMA Executive Committee adopts 24-hour Clean Accra Project https://www.adomonline.com/ama-executive-committee-adopts-24-hour-clean-accra-project/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 13:00:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545990 The Executive Committee of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A.) has unanimously adopted a comprehensive set of initiatives presented by Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Mayor of Accra, to mark a new phase in the city’s governance and development strategy.

The initiatives—targeting sanitation, urban order, economic inclusion, digital enforcement, climate action, and infrastructure development—were adopted on Tuesday during the maiden Executive Committee meeting following the Mayor’s confirmation by Assembly Members.

They include the 24-Hour Clean Accra Initiative, the Mayor’s Special Ball, the Special Weekend Trading Initiative, the establishment of the A.M.A. City Authority Guards, the introduction of a 24-Hour Ticketing Cycle, the Green Accra Initiative, and a comprehensive Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Programme for urban redevelopment and infrastructure enhancement.

The Mayor explained that the 24-Hour Clean Accra Initiative seeks to introduce a three-shift sanitation system and waste segregation to ensure continuous cleanliness and job creation, while the Mayor’s Special Ball aims to mobilise funding for critical infrastructure, education, health, and sanitation projects through public-private collaboration.

He pointed out that the Special Weekend Trading Initiative institutionalises designated vending days and spaces to promote lawful, organised trading and reduce congestion. He added that the formation of the A.M.A. City Authority Guards is intended to strengthen by-law enforcement and safeguard public spaces.

Mayor Allotey noted that the 24-Hour Ticketing Cycle would leverage digital tools for real-time monitoring and enforcement across the city to boost compliance and revenue.

As part of measures to respond to climate threats, he announced the launch of the Green Accra Initiative to enhance urban greening, biodiversity, and air quality. The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Programme will complement this effort by driving large-scale infrastructure redevelopment—including markets and transport terminals—through strategic collaboration with the private sector.

“This is a new chapter for Accra,” the Mayor stated. “If we work together to block revenue leakages and implement these ideas with discipline and integrity, we will leave a lasting legacy for our city.”

The committee also adopted several strategic recommendations from its sub-committees, including Finance and Administration, Revenue Mobilisation, Environmental and Disaster Management, Education and Sports, Social Services, Transport, Works, Justice and Security, and Development Planning. These are expected to enhance revenue generation, environmental management, education, and urban administration within the metropolis.

The Executive Committee of a District Assembly in Ghana is established under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which replaced the previous Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462). It is responsible for coordinating sub-committee plans, implementing Assembly resolutions, overseeing district administration, advising on development policies, executing approved projects, and acting on behalf of the Assembly between sittings—while ensuring members are informed of its decisions at least seven days before each Assembly meeting.

Michael Kpakpo Allotey confirmed as Accra Mayor https://www.adomonline.com/michael-kpakpo-allotey-confirmed-as-accra-mayor/ Wed, 07 May 2025 19:46:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532752 Michael Kpakpo Allotey has been unanimously confirmed as the new Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) following a decisive endorsement by Assembly Members during a Special General Assembly Meeting held on Tuesday at the Accra City Hall.

Mr Allotey secured all 30 valid votes cast in an election conducted by the Electoral Commission, representing a 100 per cent endorsement—well above the two-thirds threshold required under Section 20 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

The confirmation, hailed as a strong show of unity and support, took place in a charged atmosphere of jubilation and drumming, attended by Assembly Members, government appointees, party executives, traditional leaders, and residents of the capital.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who supervised the election, urged the Assembly Members to rise above partisan considerations. “This is the centre of Greater Accra,” she stated, calling on members to uphold their constitutional mandate and support the President’s nominee for the good of the metropolis.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Allotey thanked God and expressed deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for the appointment. “I thank the President for entrusting me, a young man from North Kaneshie, with this responsibility. It is an honour I do not take lightly,” he said.

He praised his predecessors and pledged to build on their achievements. “I now hold the baton as Mayor of Accra. My predecessor has done her part, but today, it’s my turn. If I have any misunderstandings, I can seek advice from the many who have come before me, so there is no window for failure,” he said.

Drawing inspiration from the President’s development vision, he declared: “We are going to reset Accra—starting now,” adding, “what God cannot do does not exist.”

A Council of State representative and Chairman of the Economic and Social Development Committee, Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, challenged the new Mayor to lead with “strategic foresight, empathy and discipline.” He identified sanitation, urban congestion, housing, youth unemployment and social equity as urgent areas requiring innovation and integrity.

Mr Allotey brings over a decade of experience from the private sector, having worked in real estate, petroleum, and logistics.

He previously served as CEO of Our God Is Good Real Estate, contributing significantly to job creation and infrastructure development.

His past roles also include General Manager at KYG Consultancy and EXOLUBE Company Ltd, and Transport Manager at DIMD Ghana, where he introduced reforms that cut operational costs and boosted efficiency.

Politically, Mr Allotey has held several leadership positions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), most recently as Director of Operations for the Okaikwei South Constituency.
