President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is meeting the press today to account for his stewardship after three years in office.

Today’s encounter is the third since his assumption of power as the 5th President of the Fourth Republic.

The President is expected to speak about the performance of his government in areas of the economy, governance, health, education, security among others, and what he is doing to turn around the fortunes of the country.

The meeting will also afford journalists the opportunity to ask the President key questions he hasn’t sufficiently addressed at various forums.

'It's not clear if I'll run for 2020' – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/not-clear-ill-run-2020-akufo-addo/ Tue, 18 Jul 2017 13:30:09 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=307391 President Nana Akufo-Addo has said there is no certainty that his name will be on the ballot paper for the 2020 presidential elections.

Speaking to journalists at the Flagstaff House vis-à-vis his first six months in office, the president said he had heard that illegal small-scale miners are threatening to vote against him in 2020 due to his onslaught on their operations but nothing shows as of now that his name will be on the 2020 ballot paper.

“I’ve been told there are young men who have said they voted for me and if I continue down this way they can be sure that they will not vote for me again in 2020, well the 2020 vote it’s not clear if Akufo-Addo’s name will be on the ballot in the first place and even if his name is on the ballot, this is not going to be the reason why I’ll stop, I’m going to continue,” he told journalists.

Lands and Natural Resources Minister John Peter Amewu has been leading the campaign against illegal small-scale miners (galamseyers).

It has led to the withdrawal of over 500 mining equipment from concessions across the country.

Various mining groups across the country have expressed anger with the Akufo-Addo administration saying the onslaught is killing their livelihood.

However, Mr Akufo-Addo said “it’s an extremely important objective bringing the galamsey menace to an end in Ghana and within the confines of the law.”

Journalists to grill Nana Addo today https://www.adomonline.com/journalists-grill-nana-addo-today/ Tue, 18 Jul 2017 06:25:03 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=305591 President Akufo-Addo will today [Tuesday], answer questions from journalists at the Flagstaff House, as he opens up himself for assessment of his six months in office.
Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid, has said the President will not use the platform to shower praises on himself but will use the occasion to touch on his achievements and challenges so far, and also outline policies he intends rolling out to enable his administration to fulfil its many promises to Ghanaians.
The meeting, scheduled for midday, will give the media the opportunity to ask the President critical questions about developments within his administration which he has not sufficiently addressed.
Mustapha Hamid told Citi News the President believes that it is important to engage the citizenry through the media and take their criticisms to shape government policies.
“He thinks that this interaction with the Ghanaian people is a democratic requirement that as a democratic president, once a while you come back to the people to tell them what you have done with the mandate they have given you,” he said.
Mustapha Hamid said although many called on the president to hold that meeting after a year in office, he believes it is better to hold it as soon and frequent as possible.
This is not the first time a sitting President will avail himself for an exclusive time with the press to account for his government, and also answer direct questions from them.
Former Presidents John Mahama , John Atta Mills and John Agyekum Kufuor, also held a few of such meetings while in office. The last of such interactions then President John Mahama held was in January 2016.
Mustapha Hamid said Tuesday’s session with President Akufo-Addo “is not a press interaction to engage in self-aggrandizement… We will not come and give ourselves marks. The president will make a few remarks and then we will take questions.”
