Lil Durk could face a life sentence after being charged with allegations that he paid for the attempted murder of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

It’s claimed that associates of Durk and his collective OTF traveled to LA with the intent of murdering Rondo in retaliation for the killing of OTF rapper King Von.

However, his Ghanaian fans have chanted for justice and displayed slogans of support in a movement for his release.

  • Meek Mill, a fellow rapper and close friend of Lil Durk, responded to clips of the Kumasi protest, expressing admiration for the fans’ dedication.

In his remarks, he encouraged the crowd for standing up for Durk, commenting on how the rapper’s influence “is bigger than the streets,” acknowledging the impact Durk’s music and message have had on communities far beyond his own.

The protest in Kumasi stands as a testament to Lil Durk’s international fanbase and the bond his music has created with fans across the world.

Meek Mill considering Ghana citizenship https://www.adomonline.com/meek-mill-considering-ghana-citizenship/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 09:54:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2365161 US rapper Meek Mill says he is considering becoming a Ghanaian citizen in a recent post on X.

In his latest post, the “All Eyes on You” hitmaker, who visited Ghana for the Year of Return initiative, says he would love to naturalize for the country for peace of mind.

He wrote: “I wanna get citizenship in Ghana!!!! America made to tear black men down if you don’t follow orders!”.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have equally taken to his comment section to register their sentiments.

Meanwhile, following conversations and a lawsuit alleging that he has been getting under the sheets with rapper P. Diddy, Meek Mill denied and said he is being targeted racially.

The legal documents alleged that “Diddy had sexual relations with a rapper from Philadelphia who dated Nicki Minaj,” which narrows down the list to him.

Since then, the rapper has been very active on social media after the news broke, and he claims this is a campaign against him for going independent.

I charge $250,000 for a verse – Meek Mill https://www.adomonline.com/i-charge-250000-for-a-verse-meek-mill/ Thu, 25 Jan 2024 16:24:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2346943 Meek recently disclosed that he charges $250,000 for a verse, but would be willing to lower his price to $150,000 in the right situation.

“Every time I do a verse I charge 250k and up if you got 150k on sight and I like the song we can swap it outtt!!!!” Meek shared on X.

According to a 2022 Complex roundup highlighting how much rappers charge for a feature, Meek’s price seems to fall in line with his peers. The Philly native certainly demands a lot more money than J. Cole, who revealed last year that he does not charge for a verse, dispelling rumors claiming he receives $2,000 per word.

“Yo, bro, it’s just a bar, bro,” Cole said on Lil Yachty and Mitch’s A Safe Place podcast. “Like, a lot of my bars be really on point but that’s just a flex. I’m not gonna charge a na $2,000 a word. I don’t even charge na for the verse, I’m doing this shit because I’m inspired to do it.”

He continued, “I’m not charging n***as because, you know, I want to be on the song. I wouldn’t do that.”

On Wednesday, Meek went on to explain that his involvement and worth goes beyond the song’s performance on the charts. In addition to a verse, an artist gets the opportunity to expand their audience, which includes his tens of millions of followers.

“Some of these artist need others platform to get their point across and I offer them data and fanbase opportunities along with mass marketing I have 50 millions followers with real engagement,” the rapper wrote.

What’s Meek doing with all that dough? Well, it seems like he’s looking to expand his real estate portfolio with 15 acres in south New Jersey—most importantly, no wetlands.

“Looking for 15 Acres in south nj no wetlands tho help me out,” Meek sent out to fans on Wednesday. Real estate bros it’s your time to shine.

Meek Mill responds to criticism over Africa question of ‘how do you listen to my music?” https://www.adomonline.com/meek-mill-responds-to-criticism-over-africa-question-of-how-do-you-listen-to-my-music/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 20:51:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345040 Popular US rapper Meek Mill has responded to the criticism after he came under fire for asking how people in Nigeria and South Africa listen to music.

“Do a lot of people play my music in South Africa? I remember having a big show there a few years back. How do you all listen to our music in South Africa???? On what platform, or in Nigeria?” he asked on X on Saturday.

Many Africans on the platform took offense to the post, terming it ignorant and insulting. The rapper soon became a top trending topic on X as he continued to face criticism.

Critics say that Meek Mill’s question assumed that Africa is not technologically advanced enough to have music platforms.

Some users also made fun of the rapper, mockingly answering that Africans listen to music through elephant trunks and town criers.

In response to the backlash, Meek Mill said that he asked the question to understand how his music was being distributed in Africa.

“I was asking how they listen to music in Africa because I want to handle my business. None of my contracts say they have rights to distribute me in Africa… basically looking for the money trail? I don’t know what platforms [are] used in South Africa,” Meek Mill said on Sunday.

Meek Mill to sign one Ghanaian rapper on next visit to Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/meek-mill-to-sign-one-ghanaian-rapper-on-next-visit-to-ghana/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 12:23:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2309863 US rapper Meek Mill has hinted he will be returning to Ghana in December 2023 or early next year.

Meek Mill on his first visit went viral after he decided to shoot a music video at the Jubilee House.

Some Ghanaians took to social media to lambast the government for giving him access to bypass strict security protocols at the presidential villa in the heart of Accra – an allegation government vehemently denied.

Meek Mill apologised and also thanked Ghanaians for the hospitality.

Stonebwoy finally speaks on Meek Mill’s Jubilee House brouhaha https://www.adomonline.com/stonebwoy-finally-speaks-on-meek-mills-jubilee-house-brouhaha/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 14:35:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2211497 Reggae/Dancehall musician Stonebwoy says Meek Mill shooting a music video at the Jubilee House might be out of excitement.

According to him, the security personnel at the Jubilee House should have educated the US rapper on the protocol of the official residence of the President of the Republic of Ghana.

Speaking at The Breakfast Club, a New-York-based radio show, Stonebwoy said it was not intentional for Meek Mill to shoot the video that incurred the wrath of many Ghanaians.

“Truth be told, I can’t come to the State and go to the White House and do whatever I want to do, except there was a certain amount that will allow me to do stuff.

“I don’t think it’s a big deal, but the internet went crazy. And he did the best thing he had to do because, for me, I think this was the job of the security personnel and protocol to make sure that we don’t film over here, we don’t do this over here and we don’t do that.”

“He’s excited and doesn’t know the laws, I believe. He only tried to get the best out of his trip. And coming out to apologise shows you his true intentions. He wasn’t in the known to go and throw dirt on such a place,” Stonebwoy explained.

Let’s not try to defend it in any way – George Quaye on Meek Mill’s Jubilee House brouhaha https://www.adomonline.com/lets-not-try-to-defend-it-in-any-way-george-quaye-on-meek-mills-jubilee-house-brouhaha/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 12:37:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2203617 Ever tried borrowing apparel, a vehicle, a rifle or any other equipment from the Ghana Police Service for a video shoot? Or wait, have you ever tried getting their permit to film at any of the Police Stations across the country? I can assure you it’s not an easy process.

1. Write an official letter of intent to the Police.

2. They will respond and request to see your script.

3. You will then be invited to a meeting to discuss the specific scenes you intend to record.

4. If the story doesn’t put them in a good light, you will be advised to rewrite those scenes.

5. Rework the scenes or forget it!

Why does the Police service go through so much trouble just so you can shoot a movie scene? After all, aren’t movies good for us? Don’t movies sell our country? Don’t movies create jobs and help grow the economy? So why should the Police stress Film Makers so much?

Because as Abraham Joshua Heschel once said, “Self-respect is the root of discipline: The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.”

If the GPS does not deliberately insist on taking control of the narratives, they will be giving film makers the tools to “destroy” them or cast them in a bad light. As a Film Maker, I hate it!

But as a Brands, Communications and PR expert, I totally agree with the Police and I commend them for not dropping the ball on this one!

Let me start by commending the President and all other Ministers, Ministries, agencies, departments and we in the private sector for a rather successful December in Ghana!

There’s no denying the fact that gradually we are getting there.

That’s why it’s so sad that after such a great month which could have been crowned with reportage from that beautiful concert at the Black Star Square, a typical “one bad nut spoils the whole” situation has arguably “milled” the shine off that Blackstar Line Concert and possibly all the other great initiatives.

Sad anticlimax if you ask me! The Presidency is eminent! It is the HIGHEST office of our land.

If those around the President and the office as a whole do not hold it in high esteem, if they do not jealously guard and protect it like the way the IGP would protect a Police Uniform, then we are doomed!

I have seen pictures of many celebrities visiting various American Presidents at the White House at various times. Please do yourself a favour and go see the pictures online. They don’t just wear anything available” and they certainly DO NOT shoot music videos there! Hell no!

We’ve seen many Ghanaian artistes visit our President at the Jubilee House. Some may argue that none ever asked to film there. Here’s my response…they did not have to ask! They know it’s wrong! Would Mr Mill dare go shoot a music video at the White House? Let’s not try to defend it in any way. It was wrong! Someone dropped the damn ball.

Look, I am all for connecting with our brothers and sisters from the diaspora. I’m all for the full display of the proverbial Ghanaian hospitality in its best forms. I am all for naming streets, edifices, even villages and towns after whoever deserves the honour.

But for someone to appear before the most powerful man of the land dressed as though paying a courtesy call on our President isn’t a big deal and proceed to shoot a music video at the supposedly most protected building on our soil…the Jubilee House with lyrics that neither celebrate, flaunt nor portray Ghana as a preferred tourism destination whatsoever leaves very little to be desired.

Yes, by all means, let’s open up Ghana to the rest of the World. Let’s embrace our kind from the diaspora and make them feel at home. But please let’s not compromise our national security in the process.

Let’s not even bring to the picture that pathetic narrative naming hypocrites because once upon a time, some people said they would turn the Jubilee House into a poultry farm! That’s just politics.

Of course, they won’t dare.

Life is all about the optics. Maybe we are all wrong and just being needlessly emotional. Rightly so… we are reacting based on what we, together with the rest of the world have seen.

I want to believe strongly that the concept of national security goes beyond just protecting our borders.

This is us, being citizens and not spectators so please allow those who want it rant to rant!

Someone dropped the ball. The question is…who?

What lessons are there to learn and how to do ensure it doesn’t occur again?

One again, kudos to us all for a great December in Ghana. I know it’s hard, but let’s still endeavour to focus on the positives and celebrate our Motherland!

Twa Omanye Aba!

Richard Ahiagbah wades into Meek Mill’s Jubilee House video https://www.adomonline.com/richard-ahiagbah-wades-into-meek-mills-jubilee-house-video/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 10:50:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2203527 A former Deputy Director of Research at the Jubilee House, Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that American rapper, Meek Mill, did not seek permission before recording his music video.

Taking to Twitter, the New Patriotic Party Director of Communications added the video which has attracted public backlash was also not sanctioned by the Presidency.

The rapper, who was in Ghana during the Christmas holidays, sparked public agitation after posting a video he recorded with his crew at the Jubilee House.

In the video, the singer was seen joyously walking through the Jubilee House, together with his colleagues as they jammed to his latest composition.

From the visitor’s hall to other locations in the Jubilee House, including the front of the facility, Meek and his friends accessed the building for their shoot.

He has since deleted the video and rendered an apology, stating his aim was simply to project ‘art’, help project Ghana and further strengthen the bond between Africans across the globe.

He added he is not familiar with the sensitivities of Ghanaians, adding that he meant no harm whatsoever.

On the back of this development, Mr Ahiagbah added he believes Meek Mill realised his indiscretion and has accordingly deleted the video as he retweets the latter’s apology.

Meanwhile, there has not been any comment from the Presidency yet on the matter despite the growing public outcry on social media and traditional media platforms.

Information that Meek Mill used President’s lectern at Jubilee House false – Information Ministry https://www.adomonline.com/information-that-meek-mill-used-presidents-lectern-at-jubilee-house-false-information-ministry/ Tue, 10 Jan 2023 16:30:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2203359 Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, has clarified that information that Meek Mill used the President’s lectern at the Jubilee House in his viral music video was false.

According to her, no government official uses the President’s lectern during national events.

“The issue that he used the president’s lectern is false. There are two lecterns at the Jubilee House, one for the President and the other is for Communications Directorate and other persons who visit the presidency. Even the Vice President doesn’t use the President’s lectern, only the President uses it.”

She advised Ghanaians to accept Meek Mill’s apology for using pictures and videos from the Jubilee House in a music video.

She also stated that no government official gave him permission to use the pictures and videos for his music video.

“The general public should accept the young man’s apology. In his apology, he indicated that the plans he has for Ghana outweigh the impact of music videos. He has provided an unreserved apology. No government official sanctioned or gave him permission for his action.

“We invited Africans in the diaspora to visit Ghana and upon their arrival, we give them an honorary welcome and to help create good memories during their stay. Most of them were not born or raised in Ghana. Someone’s background will cause a cultural shock and deficit and out of exuberance and excitement will act in a manner that displeases many.

“No one knew Meek Mill’s intent for taking pictures and videos at the Jubilee House was for the compilation of a music video,” she said.

She mentioned that the merits of the tourism initiative outweigh the demerits and urged Ghanaians to focus on the quality of human resources and the investment brought to Ghana.

“Looking at the potential of the ‘Year of Return’ and ‘Beyond the Return’ initiatives, we can say the positives outweigh the negatives. As a new initiative, these incidents are expected to happen which serve as a lesson. Lawmakers can decide to put in some measures in place to prevent future occurrences,” she said on Adom TV’s Badwam Show.

The deputy minister also disclosed that by the end of 2022, tourism became the third-highest contributor to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

She mentioned that by 2025, the tourism ministry’s annual estimation of visitors in Ghana will increase from 1 million to 1.5 million.

Also by 2025, the tourism industry is expected to be the highest to Ghana’s GDP estimated at $3.5 to $4 billion per annum.

Some public figures and Ghanaians have expressed their displeasure about Meek Mill’s music video shot in the Jubilee House of Ghana.

Upon receiving mixed reactions after posting the video, Meek Mill deleted the video and apologized to the people of Ghana.

NPP reacts to Meek Mills’ video shoot at Jubilee House https://www.adomonline.com/npp-reacts-to-meek-mills-video-shoot-at-jubilee-house/ Tue, 10 Jan 2023 11:42:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2203092 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for ceasefire following public uproar over the decision by American rapper, Meek Mill, to film a music video at the Jubilee House.

The criticism, according to the ruling party, is apt due to the respect Ghanaians have for the seat of government.

Deputy Communications Officer of the NPP, Ernest Owusu Bempah, made the call on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday.

Meek Mill on Sunday, January 8, 2023 posted a music video he shot at the Jubilee House, during his visit to the country during the Christmas festivities.

In the video, Meek Mill, in the company of some friends, walked through some chambers and the outer precincts of the Jubilee House jamming to his upcoming track.

This attracted a lot of backlash by Ghanaians who believe the American act has desecrated the Jubilee House which is the embodiment of Ghana’s executive authority.

Meek Mill quickly deleted the video from his Instagram page in the wake public backslash and rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians.

Ernest Owusu Bempah

Reacting to this, Mr Bempah commended the rapper for apologising for posting the controversial video.

He maintained that, though Meek Mill was granted protocol access, “he did not seek permission before shooting the music video at the Jubilee House”.

The NPP man is certain the rapper’s conduct is not deliberate, hence people must be circumspect in their criticisms.

“The most important thing is that he [Meek Mill] has apologised for posting the controversial video, he added.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said.

He indicated that, the matter will be raised on the floor of the House when Parliament resumes sittings.

This, he said, is to prevent any recurrence of such “international embarrassment” to protect the image of the country’s presidency.

“We will insist that there is an investigation. We will insist that all those who masterminded this national disgrace and international embarrassment are brought to book. As the House remains on recess we will continue to push for Committees to look into this matter when the House returns, we will raise this matter on the floor,” he said in an interview with JoyNews on Monday afternoon.

He further demanded that the President should apologise to Ghanaians for what he says is the “despicable desecration of the Jubilee House.”

A teaser of the rapper’s music video posted on social media featured some parts of the Jubilee House including the President’s lectern.

Meek Mill was seen in the company of a group of other backers rapping at the seat of government.

The content of the video has since generated backlash from Ghanaians as they say the act has compromised the security of the Jubilee House.

Mr Ablakwa had earlier called for the immediate dismissal of persons who allowed the American rapper to film his music video at the Jubilee House.

“All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately. How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively?

“Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high security installation?” Mr Ablakwa tweeted.

According to the lawmaker, the video and its content constitute a ‘despicable desecration’ of the Jubilee House.

In a tweet on Monday, Mr Ablakwa bemoaned the development, questioning the security implications of the said filming at the presidency.

“All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately. How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively?

“Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high security installation?”, Mr Ablakwa tweeted.

The comments by the legislator add to the series of public backlash which have greeted the video since it came into the public domain on Sunday.

On Sunday evening, American act, Meek Mill, posted a music video he shot at the Jubilee House, during his visit to the country during the Christmas festivities.

One of the photos Meek Mill posted after visiting the Jubilee House and interacting with the President

In the video, Meek Mill, in the company of some friends were seen in and around the Jubilee House jamming to his latest track.

The singer and his colleagues walked through some chambers of the Jubilee House, as well as the outer precincts of the facility.

Mill also made use of the official podium President Nana Akufo-Addo uses in his public addresses; while dishing out portions of his rap lines.

What he intended to excite his fans rather angered hundreds of Ghanaians who took to their social media platforms to condemn the use of the Jubilee House for the said filming.

According to the critics, since the Jubilee House is the embodiment of Ghana’s executive authority, it is inappropriate for the singer to have been allowed to access it in that manner.

The critics have therefore lambasted the Presidency for allowing the Jubilee House to be ‘cheapened’.

Meanwhile, Meek Mill himself has deleted the video from his Instagram page in the wake of the raging public backslash.

Known privately as Robert Rihmeek Williams, Meek was born and bred in Philadelphia, USA, where he has made all his memories from childhood education to his professional career.

But, a latest ancestry trait has revealed he has roots in Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mali, Congo and Senegal.

A breakdown of the DNA results he shared on his Instagram platform proved his ancestors were originals to the regions of Benin and Togo with 21%, Ghana and Ivory Coast with 18%, 18% from Nigeria, 14% from Cameroon, Congo and West Bantu Peoples; 8% from Mali; and 5% from Senegal.

Meek shared his excitement on social media, especially for his Ghana and Ivory Coast where he labelled his second home.

It is no longer surprising why Meek Mill fell in love with Ghana and received the best reception in his two weeks of being in the country.

Meek’s celebratory visit to Ghana comes days after the judge who handed him a two-to-four-year prison sentence in 2017 was stripped of her cases and accused of ethical misconduct.

He had the opportunity to perform at the Afronation and also had an encounter with the hospitable Ghanaians who altogether gave him the time of his life.

Jay-Z, Meek Mill team up to block rap lyrics from being used in court https://www.adomonline.com/jay-z-meek-mill-team-up-to-block-rap-lyrics-from-being-used-in-court/ Wed, 19 Jan 2022 21:49:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2069361 Jay-Z is leading a list of music industry titans throwing their support behind a proposed New York state law that aims to stop prosecutors from using rap lyrics as purported blueprints to alleged crimes, Rolling Stone has learned.

The rap superstar, born Shawn Carter, is teaming up with Meek MillBig SeanFat JoeKelly RowlandYo GottiKiller MikeRobin Thicke, and others as celebrity signatories on a new letter urging state lawmakers — and ultimately Gov. Kathy Hochul — to make the recently proposed bill titled “Rap Music on Trial” (S.7527/A.8681) a state law.

The legislation, first unveiled in November, successfully sailed through the Senate Codes committee on Tuesday, marking its first step toward getting a full vote on the senate floor.

“This is an issue that’s important to (Jay-Z) and all the other artists that have come together to try to bring about this change. This is a long time coming. Mr. Carter is from New York, and if he can lend his name and his weight, that’s what he wants to do,” Jay-Z’s lawyer Alex Spiro, a partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, tells Rolling Stone.

Spiro co-wrote the letter with University of Richmond Professor Erik Nielson, who authored the book “Rap on Trial” with University of Georgia law professor Andrea Dennis. The lawyer said he and Hova — who previously fought back against the lack of racial diversity on arbitration panels, leading to national reforms — consider the proposed legislation a bellwether that could spread to other states.

“By changing the law here, you do a lot of good for the cases that it affects, but you also send a message that progress is coming. We expect it will be followed in a lot of places,” Spiro said.

“Our lyrics are a creative form of self-expression and entertainment – just like any other genre. We want our words to be recognized as art rather than being weaponized to get convictions in court. I hope the governor and all the lawmakers in New York take our letter into consideration, protect our artistic rights and make the right decision to pass this bill,” Fat Joe told Rolling Stone on Tuesday.

“This reform is urgently needed,” the new letter from Spiro and Nielson, signed by the influential artists, reads. “Rather than acknowledge rap music as a form of artistic expression, police and prosecutors argue that the lyrics should be interpreted literally – in the words of one prosecutor, as ‘autobiographical journals’ – even though the genre is rooted in a long tradition of storytelling that privileges figurative language, is steeped in hyperbole, and employs all of the same poetic devices we find in more traditional works of poetry.”

The new legislation from Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan), Senator Jamaal Bailey (D-The Bronx), and Assemblymember Catalina Cruz (D-Queens) would amend state law to limit the admissibility of a defendant’s music or other “creative expression” as evidence shown to a jury. According to the draft legislation, the bill would set a new high bar compelling prosecutors to provide “clear and convincing evidence” that a defendant’s creative expression, such as a rap song, is “literal, rather than figurative or fictional.”

“It’s humbling to have the who’s who of hip-hop supporting this legislation. I think it points to how important it is in this moment to protect freedom of expression,” Hoylman told Rolling Stone on Tuesday.

He previously pointed out that no one believes Johnny Cash “shot a man in Reno just to watch him die” or that David Byrne is a “psycho killer,” but over and over, rap musicians involved in criminal cases face the prospect, or reality, of having their lyrics used against them in front of criminal juries.

Meek Mill praises Africa as he reveals how kola saved him https://www.adomonline.com/meek-mill-praises-africa-as-he-reveals-how-kola-saved-him/ Sun, 19 Sep 2021 19:43:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2017429 American rapper Meek Mill is set to trace his African heritage after his eyes were opened to the wonder of the continent.

Meek said he now believes in the power of African herbs, after bitter kola helped him cure an ailment he said doctors could not figure out for two years.

Many experts have identified the medicinal power of bitter kola but the personal experience is all the star needed to become its apostle.

Meek Mill, responding to a tweet where a netizen was educating on the benefit of Kola for sexual enhancement, identified that as the ‘drug’ which worked magic on him.

The netizen went on to educate him on the types of kola nut and it’s essence. Meek’s reply was epic, “I believe you.”

He went on to preach on the need for ‘black people’ to be more enlightened on Africa and move back to their heritage.

Bitter Kola is a plant found in central and western Africa and has long been valued for its medicinal purposes.

An analysis from WebMD said it is used to cure infection, inflammation, diabetes, for sexual stimulation and it is also a good source of nutrients.
