La Liga Preview: Real Madrid host Villarreal as Athletic Club head to Girona https://www.adomonline.com/la-liga-preview-real-madrid-host-villarreal-as-athletic-club-head-to-girona/ Fri, 04 Oct 2024 06:51:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2456597 Whether you call it the ‘Derbi Sevilano’, ‘El Gran Derbi’, or simply the Seville Derby, the meeting of Sevilla and Real Betis is the pick of this weekend in Matchday 9 of the 2024-25 La Liga season.

Sevilla and Real Betis will meet at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday night, writing a new chapter into a Spanish football rivalry that dates back as far as 1928 and is regarded by ‘football hipsters’ as arguably the best derby in the league.

Matches between ‘Los Nervionenses’ and ‘Los Verdiblancos’ have been incredibly hard-fought in recent seasons – in fact, the last four La Liga meetings of the teams have all ended in draws – and Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini is expecting another tough battle.

“The teams’ respective positions on the league table doesn’t mean anything for this match,” explained the Chilean tactician. “For a match of this passion, it is perhaps more important to have aggression and determination than tactics and technique – but of course we want to blend all of that into a performance that will make the Beticos [Real Betis supporters] happy.”

This round of La Liga games gets going on Friday night when Leganes host Valencia, while the headline Saturday fixtures sees Real Madrid host Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in a night clash.

Matches between ‘Los Blancos’ and the ‘Yellow Submarine’ have been absolute bangers in recent seasons: the past four matches between the teams across all competitions have produced 23 goals, including a 4-4 thriller in Villarreal when the teams last met in May of this year.

“It was an entertaining match, with rhythm, intensity, open, with little balance,” said Real manager Carlo Ancelotti of that meeting.

Sunday, aside from the Seville Derby, also features potential thrillers in the Basque country, as Deportivo Alaves and Real Sociedad play host to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively. Atletico will hope versatile forward Antoine Griezmann can produce his best form as they look to keep pace in the title race.

“Griezmann played as a lone striker at one point. Then, he played behind Diego Costa. Then he played on the right, then he played on the left, then he played behind a striker. What this tells you about Griezmann is that he can play anywhere, and he can adapt. For me, he is still an important player,” said French football legend Thierry Henry.
