The Accra High Court has dismissed Lilwin’s application to suspend proceedings, ruling that the case will proceed in Accra.

The actor had requested a stay of proceedings pending a Court of Appeal decision on whether the case should be transferred from Accra to Kumasi, where he resides. However, the High Court rejected the request and slapped him with a GH¢5,000 cost.

The defamation suit, filed on February 14, 2024, arises from a viral video in which Lilwin allegedly launched a personal attack on Martha Ankomah.

In the video, Lilwin accused the actress of “looking down on Kumawood actors” and refusing to work with them, allegedly due to what she viewed as “poor storylines.” He also cast doubt on her success, suggesting it was due to her connections rather than talent.

In response, Martha Ankomah filed a defamation suit, citing reputational damage.

Reacting to the lawsuit, Lilwin appeared to mock the legal process by posting a video of NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s infamous quote, “Every idiot can go to court,” suggesting that being sued did not equate to guilt.

The case has since attracted widespread attention, sparking conversations about professionalism and mutual respect in the Ghanaian film industry.

With the court’s latest ruling, the case is set to proceed in Accra, as the legal battle between the two actors continues.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM, she reiterated that her main goal is to hold him accountable for his words rather than seek financial compensation.

According to Martha, she will only drop the case if the actor, real name Kwadwo Nkansah, issues a proper apology and retracts his defamatory comments against her.

Contrary to reports suggesting that she had agreed on a reduced settlement from her initial GHC1 million demand to GHC300,000, Martha stated that no monetary agreement has been made.

“I don’t intend to take a dime from LilWin. Maybe the only money involved will be to cover my legal fees. I want to teach people that it is not okay to say certain things about others, especially people they have never met before,” she stated.

She further noted that while LilWin had previously issued an apology, it was insincere and did not include a retraction of the defamatory statements he made against her.

“He had apologized before, but it was a backhanded apology. Everyone who watched the video can attest to that. He didn’t retract his defamatory statement, so it was rejected. He has to do it again,” she insisted.

The case is set to return to court in April, where LilWin is expected to present a proper apology.

Martha assured the public that whatever decision the judge makes will be made known.

She also shared a message of forgiveness, stating, “I am not perfect. I pray for forgiveness, and I will also forgive. I have said so many times that I want him to do the right thing, apologize, and I will forgive him and let it go.”

She further urged public figures to be mindful of their words and understand the consequences of defaming others.

Terms of the agreement were struck on Tuesday, February 25, after an initial breakdown in negotiations was announced in open court.

Following the agreement, the parties are to file the terms of settlement and appear in court on April 1, 2025, for it to be adopted as a consent judgment by the court presided over by Justice Forson Baah Agyepong.

On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, an initial proposal from Lilwin and his representative to pay GH₵150,000, which includes GH₵50,000 legal fees, was flatly rejected as lawyers of the plaintiff (Martha Ankomah) described it as an “eyesore.”

“We have been chasing the defendant for settlement,” counsel said. “My learned friend (counsel for Lilwin) is here, and I have called her several times just to get something to work with,” but to no avail.

Eyesore Proposal

Counsel said it was only last Saturday that counsel for the defendant (Lilwin) called “to propose something….and what they proposed was an eyesore.”

Nii Applatu Plange, counsel for the plaintiff, said, “In our view, it is not something that we will want to proceed further with, so we are back for the court to proceed with the case,” he said as negotiations for settlement broke down.

Reasonable Proposal

Counsel for the defendant said what counsel for the plaintiff told the court was largely true but stressed that what her client (Lilwin) had proposed was “reasonable.”

She was, however, “surprised to hear (from counsel of the plaintiff that it) is an eyesore.”

In the circumstances, she said, “We are in their (plaintiff’s) hands and the court.”

To clarify matters to the court, counsel for the plaintiff said, “At the last sitting, we (plaintiff and her counsel) came down (from GH₵5m to GH₵2m) significantly, and when my learned friend called, she proposed legal fees and GH₵100,000 for Martha to forgo it.”

This, counsel for the plaintiff said, was unacceptable and formed the basis of his description as an “eyesore.”

We Can’t Afford Martha’s Pedigree

Counsel for Lilwin (defendant) told the court that “We proposed that Martha should receive GH₵100,000 and legal fees of GH₵50,000 (totaling GH₵150,000).”

She explained that, “We are approaching Easter, and I know that the matter is not anything that we can quantify in terms of the injury caused to the plaintiff (Martha Ankomah).”

“We are doing this on the background that we are Christians. …We cannot pay Martha Ankomah for her pedigree,” counsel for Lilwin said as she mitigated for the damages.

Counsel for the defendant intimated that “We are proposing a whopping 1.5 billion (in old currency),” which, for them, is reasonable.

But counsel for the plaintiff also raised concerns about how the new apology that was to replace the rejected one was treated.

Justice Forson Baah Agyepong, the presiding judge who appeared to have had enough of the parties after his previously wise counsel for them to agree on settlement in his chambers, said, “I won’t talk again; I have advised both parties enough.”

GH₵200,000 New Proposal

When it appeared in open court that the plaintiff and her lawyers did not accept the initial GH₵150,000 proposal and wanted the case to proceed in court, Lilwin (defendant), through one of his managers, whispered into counsel’s ear.

Counsel then informed the court that her client had whispered into her ear that he would round the figure up to GH₵200,000, including legal fees.

That triggered a back-and-forth exchange in open court, resulting in the parties approaching the bench. They later agreed to have more discussions in chambers to resolve the matter, but this time without the judge.

After nearly two hours, the parties returned from chambers to inform the judge that they had agreed on terms of settlement.

After consulting their diaries, the parties informed Justice Baah Agyepong that they would be back in court on April 1, 2025, for the terms of the settlement to be adopted by the court as a consent judgment.

It is not immediately clear the final sum in general damages that was agreed on, but the settlement will include a new retraction and proper public apology.

As a result, the lawyers for the plaintiff, Martha Ankomah, have informed the court that the matter should proceed in court.

Earlier in July this year, the High Court was informed of the possibility of a settlement, which led to an adjournment. However, that attempt has now failed.

Lilwin, has been taken to court by the actress over alleged disparaging comments made about her in public.

In court on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, the first session of the 2024-2025 legal year, Justice Forson Agyapong Baah was informed by the lawyers of the actress, led by Nii Apatu Plange, that the defendant (Lilwin) was not ready for settlement.

“We made our proposals to the intermediary, but he later informed us that it did not seem the defendant was ready for settlement, so I will say that settlement could not be achieved,” the counsel for the plaintiff informed the court.

“We pray the matter proceeds,” Nii Apatu Plange urged the court.

Justice Baah, after hearing from the counsel of the plaintiff, adjourned the case to November 5, 2024, for hearing.

“In the circumstances, the case is adjourned to 5th November 2024, for hearing to begin at 8:30 a.m. Let hearing notices, along with today’s notes, be issued and served on the defendant,” the court directed.

Lilwin was absent from court again, and there was also no legal representation for him.

The plaintiff, Martha Ankomah, was however present.

Lilwin, is seen in a viral video insulting the actress for her alleged comments. In the video, Lilwin downplayed Martha’s prominence in the film industry.

In a writ of summons filed on February 14, 2024, Martha Ankomah claims that the statements made by Lilwin have harmed her reputation and the brand GTP.

Martha Ankomah insists that Lilwin falsely accused her of expressing disdain towards Kumawood actors by refusing to collaborate with them due to their perceived lack of quality storylines. She argues in the writ that Lilwin’s published words were defamatory.

She is therefore demanding:

a) Damages in the sum of GH¢5 million for the defamatory statements made by the defendant.

b) Compensatory damages for the damage done to the reputation of the plaintiff.

c) Aggravated damages for the reckless and malicious publication of the defamatory words.

d) An order directing the defendant to publish an apology and a retraction of the said defamatory words with the same prominence.

e) An injunction restraining the defendant from further publishing or causing to be published similar words defamatory of the plaintiff.

f) Legal costs.

This apology comes after his request for an out-of-court settlement in the ongoing GHS 5 million defamation lawsuit filed against him by Ankomah.

In his statement, Lil Win acknowledged that humans are bound to offend each other; but, it is my responsibility to accept his fault and apologize for it.

Contrary to circulating rumors, Lil Win clarified that he did not verbally assault Ankomah.

He explained that his comments were merely an expression of his displeasure over her decision not to feature in his movie.

“If she felt offended by my comments, I humbly apologize. There’s no hate or bad blood,” he added.

The defamation suit, filed by Martha Ankomah on February 14, 2024, stems from a viral video in which Lil Win allegedly made disparaging remarks about her role and significance in the film industry.

Ankomah’s lawsuit claims that these statements have damaged her reputation and that of the brand GTP, with whom she is associated.

Ankomah asserts that Lil Win falsely accused her of looking down on Kumawood actors and refusing to collaborate with them due to perceived poor-quality storylines.

In her lawsuit, she is seeking several forms of relief, including:

This follows the completion of the Case Management Conference on July 25, overseen by Justice Forson Agyapong Baah at the High Court in Accra.

The judge has ordered that Lil Win be notified of the hearing and the court’s notes via the usual means, as he was absent at the previous session and did not have legal representation.

The lawsuit stems from an incident where, during a radio interview on Accra FM, Ankomah expressed disinterest in collaborating with Kumawood actors, citing an aversion to witchcraft storylines. Lil Win responded angrily, leading to the statements Ankomah claims are defamatory.

Ankomah’s statement of claim highlights her long and respected career in the film industry, her ambassadorial roles, and the impact of Lil Win’s statements on her reputation.

She emphasizes that she has never made disparaging remarks about Kumawood or its storylines, as claimed by Lil Win.

Statement of Claim

In the statement of claim, Martha Ankomah is seeking a declaration that the words:

“Who knows you? If not for GTP and senior government officials who signed you on at GTP, who would have signed you. What kind of star are you? Even your own daughter doesn’t know you.”

I don’t even know why GTP bypassed the likes of McBrown, Mercy Asiedu and co and made Martha Ankomah their brand ambassador.

“If you had been a male actor, you would have suffered. When you become an actress and you become a star, men take care of you, men rent accommodation for you, men buy you houses, men buy cars for you. You would have suffered as a man but for the fact that you are female. It is men who look after you. You have become a star that is why men take care of your needs, you don’t use your money on anything.”

Martha Ankomah indicated in the writ that she is “a distinguished actress who has featured in a number of movie productions both in Ghana and Nigeria for more than 20 years.

“The Plaintiff has, by dint of hard work as an actress, gained respectability amongst members of the movie and creative industry, movie lovers, friends, and well-wishers.

“The Plaintiff used to be a brand ambassador for GTP promoting their products but currently holds ambassadorial deals with Yaba Ghana, Vibrant Skin Care, and Style In Vogue.

“The Defendant is an actor, musician, and comedian. The Defendant is also the founder and director of a school known as Great Minds School.

“The Plaintiff says that on or about the 8th of February 2024, Defendant without any provocation from Plaintiff went on a tirade on social media, raining insults and invectives on Plaintiff for allegedly consistently turning down offers from movie directors to feature in twi local movie productions popularly referred to as ‘Kumawood.’”

“The Plaintiff says that the Defendant according to the video circulating all over social media was enraged by the fact that, a director by the name of Frank Fifi Gharbin had informed him that, Plaintiff had turned down an offer to feature in a Kumawood movie on the basis that most Kumawood movies’ storyline does not make sense.

“The Plaintiff vehemently denies this claim and says that she has never had any such conversation with the said director or said anything to that effect to warrant the verbal attack on her.”v

The actress has said she wants the rule of law to take its course, hence has no intention of withdrawing the suit.

“I have not withdrawn the suit, I believe the rule of law works in this country.

“So I don’t think you can insult anyone and go scot-free. If we say we are role models, people must learn from us so we have to set good examples. So I took it to court. Please it’s not a joke because it takes years to build a brand,” she stated in an interview with Accra-based UTV.

Miss Ankomah on 14 February 2024 sued Lilwin for derogatory comments against her professionalism and integrity.

In the suit filed at an Accra High Court the actress demanded damages among others in the sum of GH¢5 million and an apology and a retraction of the said defamatory words with the same prominence.

Meanwhile, Martha has expressed optimism the court will do the needful in the case.

“If the court doesn’t teach him a lesson, it will be a very bad example that may encourage the next generation to just say anything about people,” she added.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Lil Win claimed the video in question, which sparked widespread speculation, was a scene from a movie he was working on.

He clarified that, the snippet circulating online was taken out of context.

“The video I did is a movie. I was acting… I was not angry. I had done some makeup,” he explained, indicating his intent to leave the resolution of the issue to legal professionals.

Martha Ankomah has sued Lil Win for denigrating her reputation. The writ commands Lil Win to appear in court within eight days to respond to the allegations.

Ahead of the court hearing, Lil Win underscored the need for unity and collaboration among industry stakeholders.

Looking into the future, Lil Win is hoping to break international boundaries.

“I want to go international. The investors should come and take me there,” he said, emphasizing his dedication to reaching new heights in his career.

But for people like you, who call yourselves refined actors; how many times do these Nigerians come to Ghana to shoot movies? They are the ones who rather send for you guys.”

In response to these allegations, Martha Ankomah filed a writ of summons at the High Court in Accra, seeking redress for the false statements made by Lil Win.

The writ commands Lil Win to appear in court within eight days to respond to the allegations.

The legal action comes as Martha Ankomah vehemently denies the accusations leveled against her, emphasizing her commitment to professionalism and integrity within the Ghanaian film industry.

She said such baseless claims not only tarnish her reputation but also undermine the collaborative spirit necessary for the growth of the entertainment sector.

As the case unfolds, both Martha Ankomah and Lil Win await the legal proceedings to determine the veracity of the statements in question and seek appropriate remedies for any harm caused.

In the video, Miss Ankomah recounted how Mr Osei has always been his lover in movies but was yet to establish the reason behind the coincidence.

In response, David asked that they make it a reality but in rebuttal, Martha stated no.

Martha disclosed they were bark on set shooting a movie together amidst powerful declarations on how she believes the movie will impact lives.

David on his part spoke in tongues.

Fans and followers after sighting the video have expressed their excitement about the project.

The photos were to mark the birthday of the lady, Adwoa Mercy who she identified as her younger sister.

One of the photos saw Adwoa in a beautiful Kente outfit and a fascinator to complement her look.

Another saw the pretty lady sit like a queen on a couch as she poses for the camera amidst smiles.

She was dressed in a suit with a scarf tied around her neck.

From the photos, one needs not be told that the ladies are biological siblings as the resemblance was striking.

Posting the photos on her Instagram page, she wrote: Happy birthday to my beautiful darling sister @msadwoamercy you are blessed and highly favoured.

According to her, she was filming on set at a location around Spintex in Accra when the food arrived for her crew, hence she got served.

Narrating her incident, the actress said she started having severe stomach upset coupled with vomiting when she finished her food.

Speaking in an interview on Angel FM, Ms Ankomah said it was the weirdest thing to have happened to her because everyone on set that day ate the same food, adding that, she was the only one who had a strange reaction.

At Spintex, I was on set and they brought food for us. When I ate mine, I started running and vomiting and it was strange. I called people I know and we started praying so since then I pay attention to what I eat on set.

Additionally, the beautiful actress said she didn’t go to the hospital because she healed herself through prayers.

I didn’t go to the hospital. It didn’t make sense… so I asked the welfare lady why it was happening to only me. So I prayed more.. since then I am very careful when I am eating at a location.

The photos were to mark the little boy, identified as Abrantie Borga Clyde’s second birthday.

The series of photos posted captured a happy child who served bold fashion statements.

One of them saw little Clyde exhibit his drumming skills.

With his ponk hairstyle, he gave off wild and exciting poses.

Posting the photo on Instagram, the actress captioned it: “Happy birthday to my son. You are blessed and highly favoured. I love ❤️ you so much ??.”

The post has generated many goodwill messages for the boy from followers including colleague actors.

The practice is the same for some female celebrities who also deliberately reveal their flesh for the purposes of increasing their followers and likes on photo-sharing platforms like Instagram.

One celebrity who is clearly against the craze is actress Martha Ankomah who says she finds the actions of these people to be wrong and insane.

According to the Kiss Me If You Can actress, posting nude pictures on social media goes a long way to affect brands, especially before corporate institutions.

“I have my flaws but I wouldn’t wake up in the morning and post a pic of my naked self. What am I teaching the people following me,” Martha quizzed in a recent interview with KOE with Bisa Gbele.

“Companies would like to associate themselves with good brands so ask yourself if you deserve to be a brand ambassador,” she asked further.

According to her, God created stars, hence it will yield no return to go intimate with a movie producer in the hope of attaining the limelight.

Speaking on UTV, Martha said she has been stripped off movie scripts she was awarded several times because she refused to get under the sheets with some producers.

“God created stars so there is no need to agree to have sex with a producer so he can make you a star. It’s all about talent and hard work. I don’t visit producers in hotels for scripts. I could be awarded a script and see someone else act my role because I didn’t give in,” Martha said.

Advising emerging actors, Martha said “a lot of people are in a hurry to be famous but it comes with time. Take it easy because the right time it will happen. Are you dying tomorrow?” she queried.
