The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, March 21, in the Adum area of the Ashanti Region, destroyed several shops and properties, leaving many traders devastated.

During a visit to the affected area on Tuesday, March 25, Dr. Bawumia lauded the fire service for their “yeoman’s job,” emphasizing that their prompt intervention prevented further destruction.

He also extended his sympathies to the affected traders and assured them of his support in rebuilding their businesses.

“I understand the pain and losses you have suffered, and it is my sincere hope that the support provided will assist you in recovering from this tragic incident,” he stated.

The incident has reignited discussions on the challenges traders face in major commercial hubs and the crucial role of emergency services in mitigating such disasters.

They include a shop owner and a welder engaged by the same shop owner for repair works in the shop.

Commander for the Manhyia Divisional Police, ACP Kwaku Buah has disclosed that the duo is currently in custody, assisting with police investigations.

No charges have, however, been made in the preliminary stages but ACP Kwaku Buah explained that if the preventable act was not intended, the individuals could be charged for negligence.

About thirty shops, housing plastic bags and other highly flammable goods were affected in Sunday’s inferno.

The scene has since been cordoned with police protection.

Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation are helping occupants on the ground floor, which was not affected by the fire, to salvage their property.

The fire service has also been at the scene to pick exhibits for further investigation into the cause of fire.

According to reports, over 100 shops are reported to have been ravaged by the Sunday dawn fire.

Adom FM’s Kofi Adjei who was the scene reported that five market women collapsed when they saw their shops burnt into ashes.

They were quickly rushed to the hospital for medical attention in the car of the Member of Parliament in the area, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

It is unclear what triggered the fire but personnel of the fire have been able to douse the fire.
