He said the initial target forms part of a broader plan to deliver 1,500 housing units by December 2027, with the remaining units of the 5,000-unit estate to follow.

President Mahama disclosed this during an inspection tour of the Saglemi Housing Project, where construction has resumed through a partnership between government and the private sector.

He encouraged Ghanaians interested in acquiring the houses to prepare to register when the official application portal is opened.

The President recalled that the project was initiated under the late President John Evans Atta Mills but was subsequently stalled following a change in government and legal and investigative challenges.

He said the prolonged delay also exposed the development to vandalism, resulting in the theft of electrical cables, bathroom fittings and other installations.

“Looters came in and stole everything, the cables, the wash basins, the baths, all the fittings, electrical bulbs,” he said.

According to President Mahama, government later opted for private sector participation to ensure the completion of the project, with LMI Holdings selected to lead the redevelopment.

He said the location of the estate, close to industrial centres in Tema and the Dawa Industrial Area, makes it strategically positioned to meet the housing needs of workers in those areas.

“The first phase which was the 1,500… I’m sure that by December next year that first phase of 1,500 would have been delivered and then work would have started on the extra 3,500 housing units,” he said.

The President said supporting infrastructure, including water supply and solar power facilities, was also being developed as part of the project.

He added that prospective homeowners would be able to access mortgage and loan facilities to finance their purchases.

Financial institutions, including the National Homeownership Fund, he said, were preparing financing arrangements to assist buyers with deposits and mortgage payments.

President Mahama said the financing schemes would allow beneficiaries to spread payments over an agreed period at relatively affordable interest rates.

Further information on the registration process, pricing and financing options is expected to be announced when the official portal for prospective homeowners is launched.

Speaking at the 15th anniversary launch of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications in Accra, the Minister said the initiative forms part of efforts to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda and expand access to high-speed internet services across the country.

According to him, the rollout of 5G infrastructure is expected to improve connectivity, support innovation, and create opportunities for businesses, education, healthcare, and financial technology services.

“We are determined to ensure that by Independence Day in 2027, at least 70 per cent of Ghana’s population will have access to 5G services,” Mr. George stated.

He noted that government considers digital connectivity a critical driver of economic growth and national development.

“Digital technology is no longer a luxury. It is the backbone of modern economies, and we must position Ghana to fully benefit from the opportunities of the digital age,” he said.

The Minister added that government will continue to collaborate with industry players and regulators to ensure the rapid deployment of infrastructure required to support the nationwide expansion of 5G services.

Mr. George also stressed the importance of public-private sector collaboration in bridging the digital divide and ensuring underserved communities are not left behind in the country’s technological advancement.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Sylvia Ankomah, commended the Ministry for what she described as strategic efforts to position Ghana to benefit from 5G technology.

“We commend the Ministry for the bold steps being taken to fast-track Ghana’s digital transformation through 5G deployment,” she stated.

Ms. Ankomah noted that the adoption of 5G technology would unlock opportunities for innovation, investment, and economic inclusion across several sectors of the economy.

She added that the telecommunications industry remains committed to supporting government initiatives aimed at improving digital access and enhancing connectivity for Ghanaians.

The 15th anniversary celebration of the Chamber brought together stakeholders within the telecommunications and digital technology ecosystem to discuss the future of connectivity and innovation in Ghana.
