The 2014 World Cup winner was capped 124 times, with his final game for Germany coming last month in their Euro 2024 quarter-final defeat by Spain.

The 38-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper made his international debut in 2009 and featured in eight major tournaments.

Neuer started Germany’s World Cup final victory over Argentina in Brazil and was named captain before the 2018 World Cup, a role he held until being replaced by Ilkay Gundogan earlier this year.

This week Gundogan also announced his retirement from international football – both announcements coming after midfielder Toni Kroos called time on his football career after Germany’s home Euros.

Neuer will continue his club career after signing a new deal last year to stay with Bayern until 2025.

Neuer, 37, sustained the injury while skiing in December 2022 and returned to team training in late September.

Champions Bayern host Darmstadt in the Bundesliga on Saturday (14:30 BST).

“If everything goes well in training, then he will play tomorrow. He’s looking forward to it and so are we,” manager Thomas Tuchel said on Friday.

“I’m certain many other people are also excited.”

Having last featured for Bayern against his old club Schalke on 12 November last year, Neuer’s return to partial training was delayed because of complications with his recovery from the lower leg fracture.

A World Cup winner with Germany in 2014, Neuer’s injury occurred soon after the national team’s disappointing Qatar 2022 campaign.

Neuer said he “was trying to get [his] head clear” on the skiing trip after Germany failed to reach the knockout stages.

“It’s a special situation. I can feel his excitement and his quality is clear to see. He’s got a lot of experience,” former Chelsea boss Tuchel said of Neuer.

“He’s enjoying it right now and can be proud of himself. I want him to enjoy this moment, as it will be a good source of strength for him.

“On top of that, you’ve got the nerves and excitement to deal with.

“We’re hoping now that he will be able to get back into the swing of things quickly and that everything will go well.”

Neuer, 36, has made 472 appearances for the German club since signing from Schalke in 2011.

The Germany captain has won 10 successive Bundesliga titles and lifted the Champions League twice during his time at the Allianz Arena.

“Manuel is one of the defining figures in the history of FC Bayern,” said Bayern chief executive Oliver Kahn.

“It is a tremendous achievement to be able to deliver world-class performances so consistently over such a long period of time.”

Neuer is the second long-serving Bayern player to sign a new deal this month, fellow Germany international Thomas Muller having also extended his contract until 2024.
