Two ‘okada’ riders burnt to death for allegedly snatching phone https://www.adomonline.com/two-okada-riders-burnt-to-death-for-allegedly-snatching-phone/ Fri, 29 Oct 2021 10:53:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2035878 Two motor riders were on Thursday, October 28, burnt to death by irate residents of Nairobi’s Buruburu estate after they allegedly grabbed a phone from a pedestrian along the busy Jogoo Road.

According to their colleague riders, the culprits snatched the phone from a lady who was walking on the pedestrian walkway before speeding off.

Bystanders, who witnessed the events unfold, gave them a chase and caught up with them at the junction of Rabai and Mumia Roads in Buruburu estate.

The riders were immediately joined by the irate residents who immediately set the duo on fire in the middle of the road.

The boda boda operators accused the two of being part of a phone-snatching gang that has been terrorising the residents of Nairobi and in turn soiling the name of the riders.

Police officers from the nearby police station could, however, not save the duo from lynching as they arrived minutes after the two were set on fire.

The angry residents and riders told K24 Digital that they will not report such matters to the police, arguing that such criminal elements had become a nuisance.

The Nairobi police boss, Augustine Nthumbi, however, condemned the act and asked Kenyans not to take the law into their own hands.

“As much as these cases have become too much and annoying, I wouldn’t advise anyone to engage in such violent activities. We have police officers, and they are the ones who should implement the law,” Nthumbi, stated.

Elizabeth Ohene writes on killing of 90-year-old alleged witch https://www.adomonline.com/elizabeth-ohene-writes-on-killing-of-90-year-old-alleged-witch/ Wed, 29 Jul 2020 22:45:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1833853 In the past few days, I have heard discussions on the killing of Akua Denteh in Kafaba, being likened to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

In one important way, what happened in the village gathering at which the old woman, Akua Denteh, was killed was very much like what happened on the street of Minneapolis when George Floyd was killed.

White policemen have been killing African-Americans in the United States for a long time, and so, shocking though the killing was, it wasn’t exactly a new phenomenon.

In much the same way, poor, lonely old women have been regularly branded witches and molested and sometimes killed in Ghana and so this was also not a new phenomenon.

The reactions to the two incidents have also been similar. There has been revulsion, there has been widespread condemnation and everybody who is anybody in the country has had something to say.

The refrain has been something like this should never happen again in our country.

But in very significant ways, what happened in the village gathering in Ghana is a more shocking thing. George Floyd was killed by a racist white policeman and that is what racist white policemen do.

Those who stood on the street in Minneapolis and watched the events unfold and recorded on their smartphones, tried to plead with Officer Derek Chauvin that George Floyd couldn’t breathe.

None of them tried to intervene because there were two other armed policemen standing ominously around the officer with his knee on George Floyd’s neck.

Despicable

With Akua Denteh, it was a community killing, the crowd that gathered participated in the murder, they chanted to encourage the lead executioner.

Let us not try to clothe our despicable incident in some high-falutin international language.

Let us be brutally frank here. It wasn’t just the villages of Kafaba who were acting out the macabre scene. I have seen on the front page of a national newspaper in this country, the photograph of a half-naked, elderly woman who looked disoriented to my eyes, and she was captioned as a witch who had been found in someone’s room and had fallen through a roof!

Nobody complained, nobody lodged a complaint with the National Media Commission (NMC).

We have all seen and heard so-called bishops and prophets who tell their congregations they are poor because of a witch in their home.

In this country, if you are female, poor and old, you are an immediate candidate to be labelled a witch.

It is not only in our villages and very rural parts that we see played out in everyday life this belief in witchcraft and labelling of old women as witches.

Under the cloak of culture and tradition, poor, old women are regularly called witches.

To be an old woman in this country is to be at risk, and there is no hiding place from any part of our society when it comes to those who would see you as a witch.

More than half the class of our brightest young people, medical students, say they believe in witchcraft, and I suspect a fair percentage of the medical doctors are also willing to see a witch in an old woman.

Priests believe in witchcraft, policemen believe in witchcraft, teachers believe in witchcraft, journalists believe in witchcraft, every time anyone is going through a difficult phase, witches are the reason.

Whereas if you had a Black American child you could train him to be extra careful when he is near a white policeman, there is no such identifiable source of danger to warn an old Ghanaian woman to avoid.

Your fellow women accuse you of being a witch with as much vigour and venom as the men, the young as much as old.

It is worth noting that in this video, the two persons whipping Akua Denteh are all female, the younger one, said to be the exorcist who stomps around while she whips a helpless, old woman, looks like she would have applied to be part of the firing squad in the days we used to execute people at the Teshie range.

This young woman is a sadist who has carved a niche for herself as a witch hunter. The claim in this sad story is that the townspeople were looking for someone to blame for the lack of rainfall in their area.

Indeed, when the witch hunter came into town, she had started with 18 women accused of being witches, and after an evening of torture, 17 of them admitted to being witches and being responsible for the lack of rainfall in the area this season.

Akua Denteh held out and insisted she wasn’t a witch and not responsible for the absence of rain in the town and that is how she ended up being tortured in the middle of the village.

So, witches are not only responsible for poverty, ill health, accidents and death in the family, they can stop the rain from falling as well.

Hunch

I have nothing to base my hunch on, but I suspect Akua Denteh is not 90 years old. She is said to be 90 years old because she has a shock of white hair on her head.

Every poor helpless woman, with grey hair is said to be 90 or 100 years old in this country. If she is 90, it would be easier to see her as dispensable and it would be justifiable to call her a witch.

I am 75 years old and if I hadn’t been dyeing my hair for the past 22 years, I would have white hair also. If I hadn’t been sent to school and become financially independent, I would, at the age of 75, be a helpless 90-year-old woman, labelled a witch and being publicly lynched.

But probably the part of the story that exposes our society, with its famed culture and tradition, is that her dead body was released to her family who have laid her to rest in the cemetery.

Her family, she had family. Some of them were probably in the watching crowd, or maybe had been among those who had put her up as a candidate for a witch.

We have to admit this was not a Kafaba, nor a Savannah region problem, it is a nationwide problem.

I know that there, but for the grace of God, it could have been me, Akua Ohene, and who knows if I might not yet end up like Akua Denteh. The shame is ours.

3 robbers lynched at Nadowli https://www.adomonline.com/3-robbers-lynched-nadowli/ Sat, 15 Jul 2017 10:39:43 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=297821 An angry mob reportedly lynched three suspected armed robbers recently at Nator Banori, a village near Nadowli in the Upper West Region.
The victims, who are of Fulani extraction, are currently at the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa.
Briefing the media in Wa, Deputy Upper West Regional Police Commander, ACP Edward Oduro Kwarteng, said at about 1300 hrs on that fateful day, one Dienuma Kwaku, 45, heard an unusual noise in his room.
He said the complainant then woke up and saw three supposed Fulani men – one of them he could only identify as Puuri and two others, who formerly resided in the same village – armed with two single barrel shot guns and cutlasses.
He said they were busily ransacking the complainant’s personal effects in the room.
ACP Kwarteng said the complainant, upon seeing the suspects, raised an alarm and they escaped from the room.
Later he (complainant) claimed he had identified two of the suspects and led four other young men to the houses of the three Fulani men where they were arrested and brought to his house.
Mr Dienuma Kwaku later invited his neighbours to his house and as they were cautioning the suspects, they were also being beaten at the same time, the deputy commander said.
He said when they saw that the suspects were weak, they conveyed them on a tricycle to the Nadowli Police Station where the police quickly rushed them to the hospital, but they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The complainant has since been arrested.
In another development, ACP Kwarteng said on 10th July, 2017 at about 2000hrs, the police at Hain received information that some unidentified armed men had blocked the Ulo-Nobre Road and were robbing the road users.
He said two police officers namely, Sergeant Karim Matari and Constable Christopher Agbeko, proceeded to the scene, which was about 15km from Hain.
“As they were going, five young men appeared from the nearby bush, flashing them to stop and when they obliged, one of the suspects ordered them to put off the engine while one was walking towards them with a dagger and the rest standing behind with cutlasses,” he narrated.
ACP Kwarteng said when the Sergeant realized that their lives were in danger, he fired at the one who was advancing towards them, killing him instantly, but the rest ran into the bush.
He said the deceased was identified as Desmond Danyi alias Naabu, a reportedly notorious criminal at Jirapa, who was standing trial at the Wa Circuit Court for causing unlawful damage.
The four suspects, who escaped into the bush – Hassan Arieba, 28; Christopher Godwin, 26; Mahamud Jallo, 40; Wellendi Bari, 38 – have since been arrested by the police and would soon be put before court.
The deputy commander said the police patrol team in Wa also shot the left thigh of one suspect, Abdul-Moomin Abubakar, when he attempted shooting at the police with his single barrel gun.
He said this happened when the patrol team received information that some armed men had blocked the Jonga-Sombo Road and were harassing road users.
Again, in another development, suspect Ibrahim Adams, 33, was arrested and arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court, presided over by Forson Baah Agyapong, and was remanded into police custody to assist with investigation regarding the attack on Master Harry Amankwa.
Harry Amankwa, a Level 400 student at the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS), who received deep cutlass wounds on his shoulder, head and right wrist on July 2, has since been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi for further treatment.

Suspected thief, 19, escapes lynching https://www.adomonline.com/suspected-thief-19-escapes-lynching/ Sat, 01 Jul 2017 10:08:53 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=261791 A 19-year-old suspect escaped lynching by the skin of his teeth at the Wa Central lorry station in the Upper West Region (UWR) when he was subjected to severe beating by an angry mob for attempting to steal a stationary motorbike.
The suspect, Issahaku Muizdeen, who sustained multiple injuries, was saved after taking refuge in a warehouse of a store-owner, one Alhaji Inusah Sahanun.
Briefing “The Mirror”, the UWR Deputy Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Edward Oduro-Kwateng said Muizdeen attempted to ride away on the motorbike using his master key last Thursday.
The suspect, he said had wanted to capitalise on the busy commercial activities and the large number of people around the vicinity to steal the bike.
The deputy commander said as soon as he got on the bike, an on-looker who had been detailed to keep an eye on the bike raised an alarm. This attracted a mob some of whom pounced on the suspect and started beating him mercilessly.
ACP Oduro-Kwateng said sensing danger with blood oozing all over his body, Muizdeen took to his heels and sought refuge in the store of Alhaji Sahanun, while pleading for mercy.
The ACP said Alhaji Saharun in turn called in the police who responded quickly to the distress call with an ambulance.
He said it took the police a hectic time to disperse the crowd who were after the suspect’s blood. The police rushed Muizdeen on a stretcher through a back door into the waiting vehicle to the UWR Police Hospital after which they took him into custody for further investigation.
ACP Oduro-Kwateng reiterated the call to members of the public to desist from meting out instant justice to alleged suspects. He said they should rather arrest the person and hand him/her to law-enforcing agencies with the relevant information that led to the arrest for further investigations.
“We are worried at the alarming rate at which the youth are getting involved in such mob actions. Apart from innocent blood being shed, nobody has the right to take another person’s life without the due process of the law”, he said.

3 arrested over lynching of ‘witch’ at Nabdam https://www.adomonline.com/3-arrested-lynching-witch-nabdam/ Wed, 07 Jun 2017 05:46:14 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=158281 The Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three persons in connection with the lynching of a 67-year-old woman accused of being a witch.

The deceased, Madam Yenboka Kenna, a widow, was killed at the Pelungu market on Monday, May 29, 2017.

The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Vincent Redeemer, told Citi News that the police cannot prove whether those arrested were directly involved in the lynching, but  they are currently assisting the police in investigation.

He said while conducting the investigations in the village where the incident happened, some young men came in to stop a witness from giving information to the police investigation, hence were picked up.

He said the police was hopeful they could help them identify those who carried out the murder.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Tindongo, the community where the deceased hails from, Tindong-Raan Sapana, has said that his attempts to gather more information about the crime have proven futile.

He said although the Pelungu chief has denied knowledge of the incident, he has instructed his people not to take revenge over the murder of the woman.

Tindong-Raan Sapana, however said there is very little he could do to seek justice for the deceased, since the husband and family of the deceased have not formally informed him of the death, and what they want to be done in connection with the incident.

Family of lynched ‘witch’ blames Pelungu chief

The family of the woman who was lynched on Sunday, May 28, has partly blamed the Chief of Pelungu, where the woman was killed for the incident.

According to an elder of the family, Tibil Nyaabil, this murder would have been prevented if the chief of Pelungu, Naab Sierig Sore Sobil (IV) had accommodated her in his palace until the mob had dispersed.

The debate over what has become known as mob  justice, has been rekindled following the gruesome murder of a military officer, who was mistaken for an armed robber.

The security agencies have vowed to deal ruthlessly with perpetrators of such crimes to ensure that the canker is entirely eliminated.

The man, Kugre Moses aged 36, called on the police to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to book. He was allegedly accused by some parents of the area of being a wizard who tries to enchant their children in the area to produce money for him.

Mr. Kugre said he was on his farmland when about five parents of some children in the area confronted him and started beating him up.

Mr. Kugre sustained head wounds and a fracture on his left leg. It took the intervention of the Zuarungu Police to rescue him to the BolgatangaHospitall for medical care.

He revealed further to Citi News that this was not the first time he had been accused of wizardry.

“I was accused of this issue sometime back by this same people and was taken to the Duusi chief and the chief refereed us to a soothsayer but the soothsayer proved my innocence.”

“I was at my farm when they came to take me back to the soothsayer again, but I told them I do not have money with me, they should take me home so that I will pick some money but they refused and started beating me. The four parents who attacked me are Kapiou Batimtaba, Nagbila Boare, Gwane Batimtaba, Yin Boare, Dogpobil Batimtaba, so I want the police to arrest them and make them face the law” Mr. Kugre narrated.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Chief inspector of the Zuarungu police station, Stephen Amewugah told Citi News that, one suspect, Noah Yelgaoh, aged about 35 years, and involved in the attempted lynching, has been arrested by police to assist investigations.

The Upper East Region is one of the areas known for the despicable act of what has become known as mob justice or instance justice.

Family of lynched ‘witch’ blames Pelungu chief

On Thursday, the family of a woman who was lynched over suspicions of witchcraft on Sunday, May 28, has partly blamed the Chief of Pelungu, where the woman was killed for the incident.

The deceased, Yenboka Kenna, aged 67, was killed at the Pelungu market in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region by an angry mob that accused her of bewitching people in the area.

Soldier ‘mistakenly’ lynched and burnt at Diaso

The news of this attempted lynching comes at a time when the subject of citizens taking the law into their own hands on suspected wrongdoers, has come up for discussion.

The debate has been rekindled by the gruesome murder of a soldier, Captain Maxwell Mahama, who was lynched by community members at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region, on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

It later emerged that the soldier was wrongly accused because he was in the town with his colleagues on an anti-galamsey or illegal mining operation.

Give our DCE another chance – Upper Denkyira Youth begs Nana Addo https://www.adomonline.com/give-dce-another-chance-upper-denkyira-youth-begs-nana-addo/ https://www.adomonline.com/give-dce-another-chance-upper-denkyira-youth-begs-nana-addo/#comments Thu, 01 Jun 2017 10:09:37 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=146551 The youth of Upper West Denkyira in the Central Region have pleaded with President Akufo Addo not to sack their District Chief Executive (DCE) for making certain comments that sought to justify the lynching of Captain Mahama.

Daniel Appianing responding to the gruesome murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ on Tuesday claimed that the lynched Army Captain was the head of a team from the military which has been protecting illegal Chinese galamseyers in the area.

Mr Appiaing said he was unaware that the officer was part of a detachment to the area assisting in the fight against galamsey.

As far as he was concerned, the residents resorted to lynching because they assumed he was protecting some Chinese nationals who were engaged in galamsey.

“There is a large number of military personnel protecting the Chinese and the lynched soldier is alleged to be part of it, in fact, he is said to be the leader… I am shocked they are not briefing you very well but rather claiming they are here to fight galamseyers,” he said.

His comment which did not go down well with some members of the pubic have led to several calls for him to be sacked from his position.

Reacting to the calls on the same show on Thursday, the leader of the Concerned Youth of Upper West Denkyira, Richmond Kodua noted that in as much as the comments of the DCE  in the wake of the lynching of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama is distasteful, that should not be enough grounds to warrant his immediate dismissal.

“Yes, our DCE’s comments were in a bad taste, we agree but we urge Ghanaians to exercise patience so we find solutions to the problem at hand instead of calling for his head. We plead on his behalf that the President will give him another chance because that’s all we want now,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bawjiase Police Commander, ASP Bernard Norgah in an interview with Adom News’ Kofi Adjei urged the youth to remain calm whiles the law takes it course.

“It happened in Asamankese, he was pursued by motorists, he drove through Bawjiase and the patrol team there caught him.

“The Bawjiase police have amassed a thick mob seeking to lynch him. But we are doing everything possible to stop that from happening….” He said.
