The case, dating back to October 2021, involves unpaid entitlements owed to former player Francis Nuer Addo. The Disciplinary Committee ruled that the club must pay GH¢29,000 in outstanding salaries and benefits, covering the period between October 2021 and October 2022.

Despite several reminders and an extended payment schedule, Legon Cities defaulted on the agreed instalments, missing deadlines in December 2024, January 2025, and February 2025.

As a result, the club was fined GH¢5,000, and a transfer ban came into effect after the final deadline of February 23, 2025.

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruling stated:

“Pursuant to Article 15(1)(a) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, Legon Cities FC is hereby fined an amount of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢5,000.00) for failing to comply with the Players’ Status Committee’s decision. This fine is payable on or before Friday, December 6, 2024.

“Pursuant to Article 15(1)(b), Legon Cities FC is given a final deadline to pay the full amount of GH¢29,000.00 in three instalments:
i. GH¢10,000.00 by December 23, 2024
ii. GH¢10,000.00 by January 23, 2025
iii. GH¢9,000.00 by February 23, 2025

“Pursuant to Article 15(1)(c), if the club fails to comply with the above decisions, the following automatic sanctions shall apply:
i. A deduction of three points for every league or FA Cup match played while the debt remains unpaid
ii. A transfer ban (domestic and international) from the opening of the 2025/26 player transfer window.”

The committee further warned that under Article 15(2), the GFA and all its departments would be obligated to enforce the sanctions automatically.

Despite these warnings, Legon Cities failed to meet the payment deadlines. Consequently, the transfer ban has been triggered for the 2025/26 season, barring the club from registering new players until the debt is fully settled.

The regulations also state that the club should have forfeited all league and FA Cup matches played after February 23, 2025. However, this was not enforced.

Former player Francis Nuer Addo, who initiated the enforcement process through the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), has expressed disappointment at the GFA’s delay in applying the sanctions.

In a letter dated June 19, 2025, addressed to the GFA, Addo accused the association of selective enforcement, citing the prompt sanctions issued against Nsoatreman FC in a similar case.

“Pursuant to Article 15(2) of the GFA Disciplinary Code (2019), which requires the creditor to request the commencement of applicable sanctions, I did so by a letter dated 14th April 2025 and delivered on 15th April 2025,” he wrote.

“Respectfully, to date, you have not dignified my request with any administrative response, let alone shown by deed and fact that the said automatic sanction is applicable since 23rd February 2025.”

Addo argued that the failure to apply the sanctions compromises the integrity of the Ghana Premier League and undermines trust in the GFA’s judicial bodies. He also warned that the inaction could deter potential sponsors and investors.

He further raised concerns about the potential impact on players who may unknowingly sign contracts with Legon Cities despite the transfer ban.

“The league table must be revised to reflect the forfeiture of matches as provided by the regulations,” Addo demanded. “The GFA must also publish the list of all clubs under transfer bans to protect the interest of players.”

He called on the Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Authority, and the media to intervene and demand transparency in the enforcement of football regulations.

As it stands, Legon Cities are officially barred from registering players for the 2025/26 season until the GH¢29,000 owed to Nuer Addo is fully paid.

The club was relegated to Division One at the end of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

Ouattara urges Hearts of Oak players to be caution ahead of Legon Cities game https://www.adomonline.com/ouattara-urges-hearts-of-oak-players-to-be-caution-ahead-of-legon-cities-game/ Sat, 31 May 2025 10:00:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2540480 Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has issued a stern warning to his players ahead of their upcoming Ghana Premier League fixture against Legon Cities.

Although Legon Cities have already been relegated, Ouattara believes they still pose a significant threat.

If a goat is dead, it doesn’t fear the knife again,” the Ivorian said.

“They have nothing to lose, and that makes them dangerous,” he added.

Ouattara emphasised the importance of discipline and focus from his squad, urging them not to underestimate the challenge.

“We must approach this game with seriousness and discipline,” he warned. “It is often in games like these that surprises happen. They will come out to prove a point, and we must be ready,” he added.

Legon Cities relegated after 4-1 defeat to Nations FC https://www.adomonline.com/legon-cities-relegated-after-4-1-defeat-to-nations-fc/ Tue, 20 May 2025 06:14:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536293 Legon Cities have officially been relegated from the Ghana Premier League following a crushing 4-1 defeat to Nations FC at the University of Ghana Stadium on Monday.

The visitors capitalised on defensive lapses from Legon Cities, with Kelvin Ampoful leading the charge by scoring twice.

Just before halftime, Legon Cities caught a break when Nations FC’s Rabin Ousmane Sanon accidentally turned the ball into his own net, momentarily levelling the score.

However, Nations FC regained control after the interval. Emmanuel Annor restored their lead in the 64th minute, finishing off a well-worked team move. Minutes later, Sadiq Alhassan extended the advantage with a thunderous shot from the edge of the area. Ampoful then sealed the result with his second goal late in the match.

The win propels Nations FC back to the top of the league standings with just a few games left in the season.

For Legon Cities, the result marks the end of their top-flight journey. The loss confirms their relegation to the Division One League, capping off a difficult campaign in which they struggled to compete with the league’s top sides.

Formerly known as WA All Stars, the club was established in 2006 with backing from then-GFA President and former CAF Vice President Kwesi Nyantakyi. They reached the pinnacle of Ghanaian football in 2016, winning the Premier League title.

In December 2019, the club was sold and rebranded as Legon Cities FC. Despite making headlines with marquee signings like Asamoah Gyan, the club has since experienced a steady decline in form and fortunes.

Legon Cities will now prepare for life in the Division One League during the 2025/26 season.

We hope to survive relegation – Legon Cities https://www.adomonline.com/we-hope-to-survive-relegation-legon-cities/ Fri, 09 May 2025 07:46:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533302 Communications Director of Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities, Kwame Dwomoh Agyemang, says the club remains optimistic about avoiding relegation despite their current position on the league table.

With just four matches left in the 2024/25 season, the Royals find themselves 17th on the log with 25 points, deep in the relegation zone.

However, speaking to Citi Sports, Dwomoh Agyemang emphasised that the club is fully focused on the remaining fixtures as they fight to maintain their top-flight status.

“At this point, we are not looking beyond the four matches that we are going to play in the Ghana Premier League; that’s where the focus is right now,” he said.

“As and when the season comes to an end, whatever decisions we have to make as a club, regarding player hiring and other matters, we will address then. But for now, we are pretty much focused on hopefully staying afloat,” he added.

Legon Cities are set to host league leaders Nations FC in a crucial Matchday 31 encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium next weekend.

Legon Cities sack coach Yaw Acheampong amid relegation battle https://www.adomonline.com/legon-cities-sack-coach-yaw-acheampong-amid-relegation-battle/ Thu, 01 May 2025 07:31:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530597 Legon Cities have officially parted company with head coach Yaw Acheampong as the club continues to battle for survival in the Ghana Premier League.

Acheampong took over the reins in January after the resignation of Paa Kwasi Fabin but struggled to inspire a consistent turnaround, despite a promising start.

His appointment had been viewed as a gamble by the club, especially after his earlier dismissal from Aduana Stars earlier this season.

Nonetheless, Legon Cities had hoped his experience could stabilize the team. That optimism has now faded with just five matches left in the campaign.

In a bid to avoid relegation, the Royals have appointed Tijani Abdul Rahim, a former head coach of Young Apostles, to take charge for the remainder of the season.

Currently sitting 17th on the league table with 25 points, Legon Cities are in desperate need of results to stay in the top flight.

They face a tough test this Sunday when they travel to Bechem to face Bechem United in a crucial Matchday 30 fixture at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park.

Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has handed a matchday squad call-up to talented young striker Isaka Abdul ahead of their upcoming clash with Legon Cities.

The 17-year-old forward has been in scintillating form for the Young Porcupines, netting 12 goals and registering four assists in the Ashanti Regional Division Three League. His impressive performances have now earned him a chance to step up to the senior team.

Speaking on Isaka’s promotion, Coach Narteh Ogum highlighted the club’s dedication to nurturing young talent and expressed confidence in the teenager’s potential.

“I know how much this opportunity means to the young man,” Ogum told the club’s website.

“Isaka has proven to be a very talented footballer with the determination to succeed. Fortunately for him, as coaches, we are always ready to provide the right guidance to aid his development. But credit must go to the youth team coaches, who have done an incredible job. This opportunity is not to put pressure on him but to help him understand what it means to play for Kotoko.”

Isaka becomes the fifth youth player to make Ogum’s matchday squad this season, joining Jordan Amissah, Vitus Avoka, Godfred Kodua, and Solomon Kwaku Sah.

The much-anticipated fixture against Legon Cities is set to kick off at 15:00 GMT.

Stonebwoy’s younger brother joins Ghana Premier League Club https://www.adomonline.com/stonebwoys-younger-brother-joins-ghana-premier-league-club/ Wed, 22 Jan 2025 11:19:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2495788 Elijah Satekla, the younger brother of celebrated Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy, has officially joined Ghana Premier League club Legon Cities on a two-year deal.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder’s arrival is a major boost for the Royals, who are aiming to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season as they fight to retain their top-flight status.

Although the club has yet to release an official statement, Legon Cities dropped hints on social media by sharing a song from Stonebwoy, creating excitement among fans about Satekla’s signing.

Satekla becomes the fourth addition in the January transfer window for the Royal Blues, following the signing of former Asante Kotoko winger Emmanuel Gyamfi.

Legon Cities endured a tough first half of the season, finishing in 17th place with just 14 points from 17 games.

With relegation looming, head coach Yaw Acheampong will look to Satekla to provide much-needed creativity and firepower in attack.

The Royals kick off the second round of their campaign with a challenging fixture against league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Hearts of Oak beat Legon Cities to go second on league table https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-beat-legon-cities-to-go-second-on-league-table/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 10:01:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489958 Hearts of Oak continued their impressive form with a 1-0 victory over Legon Cities in their first Premier League match of 2025, courtesy of a superb solo effort by midfielder Ramzy Yussif.

Yussif’s decisive goal came just before the halftime whistle, as he weaved past multiple defenders and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Kwame Aziz to secure the Phobians’ sixth win in their last eight matches.

The game marked a new chapter for Legon Cities, who announced the appointment of Yaw Acheampong as head coach just an hour before kick-off.

Acheampong, taking over from Paa Kwesi Fabin, made three changes to the squad for his debut, bringing in Morris Fuseini, Aaron Quartey, and Nicholas Nti in place of Frederick Akatuk, Frederick Ofori, and Bruce Tagoe.

Cities, desperate to end a four-match losing streak that left them anchored to the bottom of the table with 11 points from 15 games, began brightly. Forward Albert Yeboah spearheaded their attack, creating early opportunities, including a setup for Mohammed Alidu, who squandered a promising chance after losing his footing.

The visitors nearly took the lead midway through the first half when Emmanuel Amankwaah fouled Williams Adjei on the edge of the box. However, Quartey’s resulting free kick was deflected for a corner. Amankwaah was shown the game’s first yellow card for the foul.

Hearts had their share of missed opportunities, with Kwabena Asamoah failing to convert a pinpoint Theophilus Collison cross despite being unmarked, and Hamza Issa failing to connect cleanly with another delivery from Collison minutes later.

Just before the break, Yussif’s moment of brilliance broke the deadlock, putting the home side in control.

Legon Cities pushed for an equalizer early in the second half, with Amoah forcing a fine save from Hearts goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. However, their hopes were further dented in the 82nd minute when Amankwaah was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for time-wasting.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Hearts held firm through six minutes of added time to secure the win.

The victory propelled Hearts of Oak to second place on the table with 28 points, just two behind leaders Kpando Heart of Lions. Legon Cities remain at the foot of the standings with 11 points from 16 matches, leaving Acheampong with a challenging task ahead to steer the team out of relegation trouble.

It happens in football – Kotoko coach after losing to bottom-placed Legon Cities https://www.adomonline.com/it-happens-in-football-kotoko-coach-after-losing-to-bottom-placed-legon-cities/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 17:12:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2466741 Asante Kotoko coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, has responded to his team’s surprising 2-1 loss to Legon Cities in the Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors faced their first defeat of the 2024/25 season in an outstanding game at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Fans voiced their frustration over the defeat, especially since Legon Cities entered the game at the bottom of the table with just two points.

However, Ogum noted that losses to lower-ranked teams are common in football.

“It happens all over the world. He who is down fears no fall. It was an exciting game, a game of two halves,” he said.

“It is not the best way to lose, especially if you look at the way we played in the second half; it shouldn’t have happened, but it has. We just have to put ourselves together and move on,” he added.

Currently, Asante Kotoko holds second place with 15 points and will face Heart of Lions in Obuasi on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Legon Cities will play against Young Apostles in Accra the following day.

Essu, aged 22, passed away at the University of Cape Coast Hospital in the Central Region on Saturday June 15, 2024.

Despite undergoing numerous tests, doctors were unable to determine the cause of his illness.

He was later transferred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for further evaluation, but the results remained inconclusive.

On Saturday afternoon, Essu appeared to be improving, but his condition worsened that evening, leading to his death.

Essu was a member of Ghana’s U-23 team that qualified for the AFCON in Morocco last year.

During his illness, he had appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to pay his outstanding bonuses to cover his medical expenses.

Tragically, he passed away without receiving the funds owed him for his service to the country.

This marks the second loss of a goalkeeper for Legon Cities in less than a year, following the death of Sylvester Sackey in September 2023.

The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on their way back to Accra after their matchday eight game against FC Samartex 1996 at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex.

The driver’s side of the team bus was smashed, and all possessions of the players and officials, including mobile phones and laptops taken.

One player, Osman Amadu sustained injuries.

“There are no casualties but they took everything from us,” player, Nicholas Mensah is quoted by Kickgh.

The club in a statement has confirmed the unfortunate incident.

It is not the first time a Ghana Premier League team has been victim of armed robbery, with Ashantigold, Asante Kotoko and Wa All Stars having suffered similar fates in the recent past, while a Women’s Premier League team, Savannah Ladies, were also attacked last season.

It is unknown if their matchday nine game against Medeama SC at the El-Wak Stadium will happen this weekend as scheduled.

“We want to get a respectable position and avoid relegation fights the club suffered these past seasons” he added.

Ailing William Essu gets 13K donation from Black Meteors teammates https://www.adomonline.com/ailing-william-essu-gets-13k-donation-from-black-meteors-teammates/ Wed, 20 Sep 2023 12:46:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2296219 The national U-23 players have donated an amount of GH¢13,000 to Legon Cities goalkeeper, William Essu.

Essu, who was part of Ghana’s team which beat Algeria in the final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers has been dealing with a serious medical issue for some time.

The urgency of the matter came to the known after a letter from the goalkeeper to then-Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko demanding his winning bonuses from the Algeria game went viral.

There was concern that his condition would eventually be beyond repair following the death of his Legon Cities teammate Sylvester Sackey, also a goalkeeper who passed on after battling with a short illness.

However, the Black Meteors players have responded swiftly to the issue with a cash donation hoping to see the player back on his feet as fit as a fiddle.

The donation follows that of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Foundation’s GH¢10,000 support to the shot-stopper as well as a notable donation from the Nicholas Opoku foundation.

The player was earlier visited by the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), an entity which seeks the welfare of professional Ghanaian footballers.

This development comes in the wake of the unfortunate passing of his teammate, Sylvester Sackey, who struggled to recover from a similar illness.

Essu’s health situation is now a pressing concern due to a lack of financial support.

In a concerted effort to prioritise the well-being of players in Ghana, the PFAG has extended their support to him.

In an official statement by PFAG on Thursday, executive members reached out to the goalkeeper and assured him of their support during this challenging time.

“In a heartwarming display of solidarity and camaraderie within Ghana football, our Vice President, Tetteh Zutah, and General Secretary, Anthony Baffoe, paid a visit to the ailing Legon Cities goalkeeper, William Essu.

“The visit was a testament to the PFAG’s commitment to looking after its own, especially when a fellow footballer is going through a challenging period of illness.

“Tetteh Zutah and Anthony Baffoe arrived at William Essu’s residence with smiles and words of encouragement, aiming to lift the spirits of the talented shot-stopper who has been facing health issues recently.”

Essu, known for his remarkable skills between the posts, was deeply touched by the visit and the concern shown by these footballing figures.

According to reports, Essu is in a critical condition and can hardly make ends meet.

Due to his alarming state, the Black Galaxies goalkeeper has written to head coach, Ibrahim Tanko to appeal for support.

In response to the goalkeeper’s situation, Legon Cities in a statement urged the media to be circumspect in their reportage. The club also said arrangements are being made to help William Essu.

But, former Asante Kotoko forward, Abdul Fatawu Safiu questioned the club’s conduct having been aware of the goalkeeper’s predicament.

In a post on X, Safiu wrote, “Kaish Ghana football. You telling us your attention was just drawn to your very own goalkeeper health issue meaning you people never knew.”

Eric Donkor, who also played in Ghana’s top flight also posted: “The welfare of our local footballers needs much attention.”

Ex-Hearts of Oak midfielder Emmanuel Nettey added: “Wow, just wow, a player under contract, and your attention was drawn when his pics were on social media about his illness and the league starts over the weekend, so his absence didn’t matter cos you had another player to play in his position.”

According to reports, Essu is owed monthly salaries and bonuses by the club.

Prior to the game, The Royals were fighting to keep their Premier League status alive.

Legon Cities hosted the Phobians at the El-Wak Stadium in the matchday 32 games.

Kofi Kordzi’s drive in stoppage time of the first half ensured that The Royals returned to winning ways following their defeat to Bechem United last weekend.

Konadu’s side showed more desire and were resilient as they held on to that solitary goal to secure all three points, and he was full of praise for his team at full time.

“The boys went out there and did as we planned so I say congratulations to the boys,” he told StarTimes.

“They gave it their all and we are so happy for the three points,” he added.

Hearts have now lost back-to-back games in the Ghana Premier League, ending any hopes of a top-four finish.

Meanwhile, Legon Cities are in 11th position on the league standings with 43 points and they are away to King Faisal in the matchday 33 games.

Roy Arthur or Nana Yaw Amponsah? Who is the boss player? https://www.adomonline.com/roy-arthur-or-nana-yaw-amponsah-who-is-the-boss-player/ Wed, 16 Nov 2022 15:13:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2184379 Matchday seven of the Ghana Premier League goes ahead in the penultimate week to the start of the FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022. The Ghana league, sponsored by Betpawa, had to overcome legal ramps that delayed its 2022/2023 start and further held back the progress of consecutive games.

However, the legal challenges appear to have firmly and decisively been dealt with and games resumed a fortnight ago.

This week, match day 7 games are expected across nine league centres with the attention, again, on leaders and defending champions, Asante Kotoko. The Porcupine Warriors host Legon Cities, a side coached by Maxwell Konadu, who leads his side back home to face his former employers.

Konadu, whose vast experience leading teams incorporate inspiring Asante Kotoko’s league title success in the 2011/2012 season, did the double over his former side last season.

Kotoko’s failure to beat Legon Cities in a seemingly struggling season last term is something the Porcupine Warriors want to correct this season.

This season’s game between the two sides has an added twist that embellishes the contest. A head-to-head managerial contest between Legon Cities’ project lead, Roy Arthur and Kotoko CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah.

The two club leaders have had decent runs as administrators involved in football for years with admirable progress reports to share.

Ahead of the big game at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi on Wednesday afternoon, November 16, 2022, we profile the football journeys of the two leaders of the Asante Kotoko and Legon Cities Football projects.

Roy Arthur
Arthur had been a shrewd football scout, intermediary and head of sporting projects with different clubs and academies in Ghana and Europe for almost two decades and as the sporting director of Accra-based Legon Cities football club. He joined Legon Cities prior to the start of the 2022/2023 Ghana Premier League season with a clear sporting project of identifying, nurturing, developing and finding international opportunities for Ghana’s next generation of football stars.

Arthur is widely experienced in football sporting projects across scouting, recruitment, transfers and club administration.

Having lived and worked widely with clubs in Italy following a brief professional career that ended prematurely due to injury in 2001, Roy began working on Ghanaian football sporting projects in 2006 with Atlas Sports management, led by his brother, Oliver Arthur, who currently runs Arthurlegacy Sports as CEO. He later did mainstream club football administration as the International Relations Officer for Bechem United FC. It was the period of several international tournament participation by the Bono-based club, mainly in juvenile and youth competitions in Italy including the famed Romeo and Juliet cup in 2008, Trofeo Rocco in 2009 and the Atlas Classic tournament in 2014.

He was CEO of BA Stars in 2012, BA United in 2013-2014 and guided them to the top flight in 2015. He played a very instrumental role in the club’s development, restructuring and transition from the lower-tier side to a model club.

Arthur went on to become CEO of Berekum Arsenal in the 2015-2016 season and was Manager of the Accra United Sporting Club in 2021.

Roy Arthur was also a management member of the Black Maidens in 2012, Black Queens from 2015 to 2018 and the Black princesses from 2013 to 2014, playing various strategic roles. During his tenure as a management member, the Black Queens placed third in the AFCON 2016 and were crowned champions at the African Games.

In the area of player transfers, Roy is credited with scouting and facilitating the transfers of several young talents from Ghana to Europe. Notable amongst these players are Daniel Afriyie Acquah and Richmond Boakye Yiadom

Who have had long international careers with the Ghana national teams at various youth and senior levels and a decade each of club football in Italy with some of the finest teams including Juventus, Parma, Palermo, Atalanta, Sampdoria and Genoa.

The others are Joseph Baffour Gyawu, Issifu Lamptey, Fiifi Coleman and many more.

He is currently credited with leading Legon Cities’ reinvigoration in a new Ghana premier league season that promises a podium finish.

Nana Yaw Amponsah
The current CEO of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Nana Yaw Amponsah is a football administrator with vast experience and is tipped to lead the Ghana football association in future.

Prior to taking up the Chief Executive role at Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah famously led Division One league side, Phar Rangers FC.

Nana Yaw Amponsah holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Political Science from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Master’s Degree in Sports Law and Practice from Leicester DE Monfort University, UK.

As a licensed FIFA intermediary, Nana Yaw Amponsah is credited with the transfers of more than 50 players from clubs in Ghana to different parts of the world.

Like Roy Arthur, Nana Yaw Amponsah had dealings with several clubs in different capacities but mainly in the area of player transfers locally and internationally. In 2019, Nana Yaw Amponsah contested the Ghana Football Association presidential elections, which settled on Kurt Okraku.

These two Iconic leaders of their respective clubs have shown competence and progress in their rise to the top echelons of club football and have been tipped to lead Ghana football in future.

This game, though not a top-of-the-table clash, considering the contrasting performances of the two clubs so far this season in the Ghana Premier League, pits two young football administration prospects, predicted to dominate the game for several years.

Cities, however, recorded a 3-1 win against the Premier League leaders at their own turf.

Reacting to his team’s victory, Konadu said his vast knowledge of his former club helped them in winning the game.

“Both teams did well, with all due respect to my beloved club Kotoko. It’s a team I know too well and from the initial stages we practiced that we have to come and isolate their full-backs,” the former Asante Kotoko gaffer said at the post-match conference.

“I believe we could have killed the game in the first half but that is football, we go and try to improve on our finishing in our next games because despite winning 3-1 here, it is still the same three points” Maxwell Konadu added.

The victory for the Royals take them to the 8th position on the League table while Asante Kotoko maintain their lead with eight points advantage.

Legon Cities will host bottom placed Elmina Sharks while Kotoko travel to WAFA in the matchday 27 games this weekend.

“We were playing better when we scored but because of the goal we conceded, it took the zeal out of our team and made us a bit disjointed.

What next for Asamoah Gyan after leaving Legon Cities? https://www.adomonline.com/what-next-for-asamoah-gyan-after-leaving-legon-cities/ Wed, 03 Nov 2021 15:42:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2038093 Ghana Premier League side, Legon Cities have released striker Asamoah Gyan following the expiration of his one year contract.

The former Black Stars striker did not register a single goal in his six appearances when he joined the Royals last season.

The Communications Director of Legon Cities, Mr Kwame Dwomoh Agyemang confirmed the departure of the striker.

According to him, the decision signifies a shift in focus of the club under new Cities coach Maxwell Konadu.

“We had a one year deal with the player and the one year has since elapsed,” Mr Agyemang told the Graphic Sports.

“The two parties have decided to go their separate ways, so the deal was not renewed. After the contract was reviewed, the club and the new manager wanted to go in a certain direction and as a club, we believe that should support the coach,” he said.

For the time being, Gyan who turns 36 on November 22 remains a free agent.

The former Liberty Professionals and Sunderland forward has, however, expressed his desire to play for Asante Kotoko before retiring from football.

“Anything is possible. Asante Kotoko is my childhood club and I support them. I want to wear the jersey of Kotoko, even if it’s for one day I will be okay. I would be glad but I’ve to look at the body and my health first,” he told Otwinoko TV.

“If it is Asante Kotoko or any other club, it will be fine but the most important thing is for me to be fit and ready again to play,” he said.

The former Black Stars skipper admitted that the injuries have taken a toll on him, insisting he aims to be fit by January to return to active football.

“Right now I am not active because of injuries. All these years, injuries have broken me down a bit. So I gave myself time off to check my body.

“By God’s grace, I’ll be back to action in January 2022. I just want to enjoy football because I can’t play football forever. Now I have some strength so I want to return to playing,” Gyan added.

Boadu worried over Hearts of Oak’s lack of sharpness against Legon Cities https://www.adomonline.com/boadu-worried-over-hearts-of-oaks-lack-of-sharpness-against-legon-cities/ Mon, 01 Nov 2021 12:51:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2036850 Samuel Boadu has admitted that his side was not sharp following their stalemate with Legon Cities in the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League opener.

Hearts of Oak kicked off their title defense with a home game against Legon Cities on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

However, Eric Ofori Antwi kept Legon Cities in the game as the Phobians lost two points on their own turf after 90 minutes of action.

The result means Hearts of Oak have scored just once in their last three games in the league, doing so in the 1-1 draw against Liberty Professionals last season.

Speaking during his post-match conference, Boadu said his side was not clinical in front of goal against the Royals despite creating enough chances.

“We had a problem with our attacking side because we created a lot of chances and we should have scored at least one goal but we squandered all the chances. We still have more to work on them,” the former Medeama SC boss said.

The Hearts coach went ahead to commend Legon Cities preparedness while adding that his side will be the target for many teams this season.

“It was a good game and Legon Cities were well-prepared. Everyone’s target will be on Hearts of Oak but we will never give up. We know we will progress match after match,” he concluded.

Hearts’ draw on Sunday also means that in the last five seasons, the Rainbow lads have failed to win any of their opening day fixtures – drawing three and losing two.

Hearts of Oak will be hosted by West African Football AAcademy [WAFA] at Sogakope in the matchday 2 games on Friday.

Our game plan worked against Hearts – Legon Cities coach https://www.adomonline.com/our-game-plan-worked-against-hearts-legon-cities-coach/ Mon, 01 Nov 2021 11:36:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2036825 Maxwell Konadu has lauded Legon Cities players for sticking to their game plan against Hearts of Oak in the season opener.

The Royals were hosted by the reigning champions in the Matchday One of the 2021/22 campaign at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Cities denied Hearts of Oak from opening their title defense with a win to end the game 0-0.

Speaking after the game, Konadu said he was satisfied with the performance of his side as they forced the Phobians to switch into different game plans.

“We came with a game plan. Though not perfect, we were able to hold them, trying to frustrate them with our combination passes, and to some extent, it worked,” the Black Stars assistant gaffer said.

“We saw that they decided to go long. That is where we started picking up the second balls and we played our game.”

Konadu also admitted his side made some initial mistakes in the early stages with their build-up from the back but added that they will be working on it in subsequent games.

“We made some elementary mistakes because playing from the back was a bit difficult. We will go on to work on it and make sure we do it better next time,” he concluded.

Konadu still remains unbeaten in five competitive games against Hearts of Oak.

Legon Cities will face Real Tamale United at home in their next league game next weekend.
