Akosombo Dam spillage: We know you despise us – Keta MP fires Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/akosombo-dam-spillage-we-know-you-despise-us-keta-mp-fires-akufo-addo/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 11:48:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2306664 Member of Parliament of the Keta constituency, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo’s ‘partisan’ comment after visiting Akosombo Dam spillage victims in the Volta region.

President Akufo-Addo is quoted to have said he would have chosen not to commiserate with the victims because they don’t vote for him.

But as President for all Ghanaians, he is leading the charge irrespective of whether or not they voted for him.

His words have not been well-received by a section of the public, with many describing it as ill-timed given the gravity of the crisis.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, the lawmaker said President Akufo-Addo comment was “needless”.

“We know that he doesn’t love us. We’ve been neglected for a long time. Don’t Voltarians pay taxes and levies? He should give us a break. Yesterday was the first time the President came here and he had the guts to make fun of the people. There was no statement to empathize with the people prior to that” he fumed.

Flooding caused by the spillage has forced many communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region to evacuate. They are dire need for relief items to make life comfortable.

Government has therefore set up a 13-member committee chaired by the Chief of Staff, Frema Akosua Osei Opare to coordinate responses to address the situation.

MP, Deputy Information Minister ‘clash’ on live radio over Akosombo dam spillage https://www.adomonline.com/mp-deputy-information-minister-clash-on-live-radio-over-akosombo-dam-spillage/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 10:13:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2306647 There was a heated argument between Member of Parliament for Keta, Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, and Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar over the state of the Akosombo Dam spillage victims.

This was after the Deputy Minister said the National Disaster and Management Organization (NADMO), Volta River Authority (VRA) and other agencies were actively supporting the affected victims.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, Ms Abubakar said contrary to claims that the victims had been rejected because they do not vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), government has equipped the agencies with the needed resources to support them.

She added that, after touring the affected areas, doctors and nurses have also been assigned to cater for the health needs of the people.

Fati Abubakar also reiterated government’s commitment in ensuring the communities get back to their normal life after the incident.

But the Keta MP described the claims by the Deputy Information Minister as palpable false.

The furious lawmaker said Ms. Abubakar’s remarks does not reflect the actual reality on the ground.

Mr. Gakpey claimed NADMO only donated small relief items to some affected communities because it is “broke”.

The Keta MP also alleged that, state agencies have abandoned majority of the affected communities and are only focused on Mepe.

In a rebuttal, the Deputy Information Minister said the Keta MP’s claim is borne out of politics.

She stated emphatically that, the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage in every nook and cranny of the Volta region have received some relief items.

To Fati, government in this difficult time has shown commitment devoid of partisan politics.
