In a social media interaction on the theme ‘Exclusive Leadership Tips’, the former president stated that his political mentor preached democracy ‘practically in its proper sense’.

“My number one mentor was the late Dr Abrefa Busia, it was him who cut my political teeth far back in 1969. I was a member of his Progress Party, we won and I was made the Deputy Senior Minister under his government,” he said.

According to the former president, their actions are against the provisions in the constitution and that there was the need for all political powers to disown the group.

“Ghana has a constitution so when seeking power use the constitution and talk to people to give you the power you need.

“The constitution determines what Ghana is and determines the country’s boundaries. So how can citizens rise up one morning to say they are not part of Ghana and also do not use constitutional means to take power? What they have done is more or less like a coup d’état,” he bemoaned.

His comments come on the back of recent attacks by the separatist group, known as the Homeland Study Group Foundation.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Oman FM, he said they must adopt the right means to press home their demands.

“I will plead. Everyone loves to have power but there is a right way to seek power so no one should take the power into his hands.

“No one should aid these people. We should make sure our utterances do not fuel their energy and give backing to their activities because what you say may be deemed as aiding their activities. If we continue to provide good governance in Ghana, Ghana will be the best place in the world to live,” he added.

Mr Rawlings had suggested during a meeting with some elders and chiefs from Mepe in the Volta Region last Tuesday that former presidents Mr Kufuor and John Mahama are evil and did not deserve to be in Heaven.

He had called the two ex-presidents corrupt saying, “I know with my integrity when I die, I will go to heaven but when I see these corrupt leaders, I will ask permission from God and flog them.”

RELATED: Rawlings begs Kufuor and Mahama

“If they don’t leave heaven for me, I will go and leave the heavens and join Satan in hell because I cannot stay in the same place with them,” Mr Rawlings added.

However, on Monday, Mr Rawlings’s Communication Directorate, Kobina Andoh Amoakwa, issued a release apologizing for the comments and asked for forgiveness from the two statesmen.

Mr Mahama and Rawlings

“The former president apologises to former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama for the choice of words. He deems the words as inappropriate and withdraws them,” the statement concluded.

But in a sharp reaction, the office of former president Kufuor replied saying although it accepts the apology, Mr Kufuor had some records to straight.

In the letter signed by Dr Kwabena Osei Adubofour Monday, Mr Kufour rebuffed claims by Mr Rawlings about diverting state property saying “he never divested any state property to himself or his family members.”

He explained that all “the divestiture of state properties and enterprises that took place during his tenure in office was done legally and according to laid-down procedures, rules, and regulations, and to the utmost benefit of the people of Ghana.”

According to Mr Kufuor he never tried to unduly influence the promotion or appointment into the security services, more so, based on tribal consideration.

He stressed that in his government policies, he never used tribalism in serving the regions and tribes of Ghana.

The former president also explained that as to the creation of the medal the Order of the Black Star and Eagles of Ghana, he believes that it is the prerogative of the president of the state to make and he as such.

“President Nkrumah had created all the others upon Ghana attaining independence,” he added.

Kufuor blames unprepared leaders for Ghana’s under-development https://www.adomonline.com/kufuor-blames-unprepared-leaders-for-ghanas-under-development/ Mon, 14 May 2018 07:35:36 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1112211 Former President John Kufuor has attributed Ghana’s slow pace of development to failed leadership.

Mr. Kufuor believes a mineral-rich country like Ghana should have been better developed than currently is the case.

The former president said most of the country’s leaders across sectors are performing poorly because they were forced into those positions.

He was speaking at the launch of an endowment fund for the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation in Accra.

The problem of unprepared leaders is not limited to Ghana, it pervasive in much of Africa, he said.

But “I don’t blame the leaders because many of them were forced into leadership positions; they were not prepared;…you cannot give leadership in any sector [to anybody] without they being prepared in terms of knowledge and experience and exposure,” he stressed.

Mr. Kufour wants the process of preparing the country’s leaders to be focused on the youth, who form the foundation for Ghana’s leap to prosperity.

He said businesses in a developing country like Ghana cannot reasonably hope to compete favourably with those from the developed world where science and technology has improved efficiency in unimaginable ways.

Former Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho who also at the event, believes former president Kufour’s wealth of experience in public office should be an example to today’s leaders.

He said governance and leadership – an area where Mr Kufuor excelled – were critical to Ghana’s development.

These areas, for him are not easy, especially for those involved in the business of leading and governing the country.

The well-attended fundraiser saw Governors of the Bank of Ghana, ministers of state, traditional rulers and other captains of industry in attendance.

Over one million cedis was raised to support an eighty million cedi target to complete the John Agyekum Kufuor Center for leadership and governance at the University of Ghana.

The former president explained the core values of the club as charity, transparency and accountability in advancing the cause of humanity.
According to former President Kufuor, Freemason is forbidden in some churches and Christian communities because of the ‘High ‘Powers in the society as many frowns at it.
The president who was glad in his new elevation indicated that, the club which had been in secret for long was due to lack of proper understanding Ghanaians were attaching to the club.
“Freemasonry is an ancient craft and hitherto, it was almost a taboo to talk about it publicly because this is because they did not understand the principles underpinning it.”
“Members of the Fraternity at that time, kept the craft under cover, in order to protect its sanctity.”
“From the Church, the high-and-mighty in terms of politics, suspected this craft because they didn’t know much about it so the ‘‘Brethren of Old’’ decided to keep the craft under cover to protect it, not out of malice or evil intentions”.

Mr Kufour who is also the Senior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England said, he was ready to welcome anybody on board.
The former president gave these remarks at the launch of a book titled: “The Freemasons; who we are; what we stand for and do; our relevance – An insider’s view”.

Former President Kufour, who would chalk 50 years of membership in the Club next year, purchased the first copy of the book authored by Brother Abraham Gyesie at a cost of GHC5,000.

KABA's sudden death shocks President Kufuor https://www.adomonline.com/kabas-sudden-death-shocks-president-kufuor/ Mon, 20 Nov 2017 18:06:31 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=683631 The former President, John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed shock at the sudden death of the popular talk-show host, Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong (KABA).
His sudden death, according to former President Kufuor should teach Ghanaians how to love one another to promote peace in the country.
He disclosed instances where his wife would sneak to listen to KABA’s Ekosii Sen show even though she doesn’t hold much interest in political subjects.
Ex-president Kufuor described KABA as a man of truth and balance whose used the platform to create a consensus during political debates.
“We can’t understand. It’s painful. My wife and I can’t understand. There’s mystery to love. He was like a family member. Even though I can’t walk, I was at his wedding at the banquet hall. He had a sense of humour. His smile cuts through sorrow.
“The heart and mind to ask questions were accorded with respect. He is not biased. He is always balanced. My wife is always listening to Kaba even though she sometimes dislikes politics. We have become addicted to Kaba and now we don’t have what we will listen in the afternoons…,” he said.
He continued that, “We should love one another. I don’t know his religion but I learnt he is a good person and love people. People should learn especially journalists. Whatever they say should bring good to the country….”
The ex-president believes this wasn’t the right time for KABA to depart from earth.
“No one has the cure for death otherwise Kaba isn’t supposed to die any moment. Worshipping God is good. God should bless his child and wife…,” he told Adom TV.

Write books that will shape thinking – Former President Kufuor urges writers https://www.adomonline.com/write-books-will-shape-thinking-former-president-kufuor-urges-writers/ Wed, 15 Nov 2017 08:48:46 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=666081 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has encouraged young Ghanaian and African writers to write books that would help shape the thinking and perceptions of the younger generation.
Former President Kufuor said this when he launched a book titled, “Conversations with My Father” authored by renowned veteran journalist, Ajoa Yeboah-Afari in honour of her late father, Mr Boahene Yeboah-Afari, Ghana’s first Agriculture Minister and first Brong-Ahafo Regional Commissioner, in Accra.
The former President entreated researchers, students, educational institutions and individuals to patronise the book since it was educative and would positively impact on the society.
He described the late Yeboah-Afari as a pragmatic personality and a pioneer in politics who started his political career as a socialist, but later became an accomplished entrepreneur and contributed his quota towards Ghana’s socio-economic development.
He commended the author for honouring the memory of her father and described her as a strong and principled lady who had contributed towards the development of the Ghanaian media.
Former President Kufuor purchased the first copy of the book for GHC10, 000.
The 300-page book encapsulated the country’s political and leadership challenges and key personalities that were involved in the independence struggle.
Professor Kwame Karikari, the Founder and former Executive Director of the West African Media Foundation, who reviewed the book, stated that there had been upsurge of writing of biographies in recent years because of the country’s stable political climate and the culture of the freedom of expression.
He said the book provided a peep into the physical, political and cultural make-up of the country over the decades from the1930s to post-independence era.
“You get a feel of the stage and progressive advances of social and infrastructural development of the country over the decades, anti-colonial movements and key personalities involved in the country’s freedom march,” he noted.
Prof Karikari said the book provided a clear picture of the untiring life of patriotism of the late Yeboah-Afari over a period of four decades.
The book also captured the biography of the late Yeboah-Afari, the son of the late king of Dormaa in the Brong Ahafo Region, and the tough times he experienced in accessing basic education at childhood.
It recounted how young boy, Yeboah-Afari, travelled long distances to neighbouring community to attend school coupled with political intimidations from the colonial administration.
It captured the political life of young and energetic Yeboah-Afari who was a founding member of the United Gold Coast Convention and later joined the Convention People’s Party in the independence struggle.
The narrative also provided insight into Yeboah-Afari’s contributions to the country’s socio-economic development under the CPP’s government.
The author’s father, apart from being the first Ghana’s Agriculture Minister, also served as the Chairman of the Town and Country Planning who signed the site plan and designing of the Independence Arch.
The book brought to the fore the author’s expert art work and the style of conversation in the form of questions and answers format, which was uniquely captured in vivid geographical words and, therefore, making the script for easy and fascinating reading.
Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the immediate past Chairman of the Electoral Commission, who was the guest speaker for the occasion, recalled some fascinating personal experiences with his late cousin, Yeboah-Afari.
Dr Afari-Gyan described his cousin as a trustworthy person, simple and straightforward, with the gift of encapsulating a very serious matter into a humourous physiology.
“He is a family man who is committed to the welfare of the wife and children and a strong believer of the value of education and willing to help people to go to school.
“He is very trusty and easily forgiving and was born to look for a silver lining in a situation and always ready to give people the benefit of the doubt,” he noted.
The book can be purchased at a cover price of GHC100.00 in all popular bookshops across the country and Ghana International Press Centre in Accra.
The event brought together some media gurus including; Madam Elizabeth Ohene, a former BBC Correspondent, Professor Anso Kyeremeh, a media consultant, Mr. Lloyd Evans, President of the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists, academicians, traditional rulers and family members of the author.
The book was published by Digibooks Ghana Limited.

Yvonne Nelson President Kufuor22
The president appeared all cozy in the picture as he posed for the camera. Yvonne Nelson on the other hand had to bend down a little to be able to come down to the level of the former head of state.

Yvonne Nelson is touted as one of the favorite actresses and she has won many awards to prove her worth in the movie industry.

The “Dumsor Must Stop” convener is believed to have started a campaign some months back.

It is reported that the “Heels and Sneakers” creator is securing signatures to send a message to the relevant bodies to do something about the dwindling fortunes of the Ghana Movie Industry.

The actress was rumored to be pregnant some time ago but it is yet to be ascertained if indeed the actress is really expecting her first child. She recently surprised one of her fans by replying to his ‘love letter’ he had sent to her via Instagram. The fan indicated that he was Yvonne’s number one fan and that he was going to take his own life should he not receive a reply to his letter.

Yvonne Nelson replied to the message of her fan and also posted his letter on her Instagram page to show him that she had acknowledged his ‘love note’.

Bishop Agyinasare Honours Kufuor, Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/bishop-agyinasare-honours-kufuor-mahama/ Tue, 22 Aug 2017 07:14:21 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=419061 Bishop Charles Agyinasare has honoured former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama for their contribution to Ghana’s development as well as the church in the country.
Climaxing Perez Chapel International’s 30th anniversary ceremony on Sunday, 20 August at the Perez Dome in Accra, Bishop Agyinasare, founder of the church, said, while Mr Mahama has been supportive of the church in many ways, Mr Kufuor also accorded Christians due respect while he was in office to the extent that he once consulted with the clergy on a critical issue concerning fuel price increases.
Bishop Agyinasare presented both Mr Kufuor and Mr Mahama with special Kente cloths after recalling respective fond memories he shared with either of them during the administrations.
Mr Kufuor was the special guest of honour at the climax of the anniversary. After receiving his honour, he shared with the congregation how blessed he has been throughout his whole life simply because he appreciated God for every little blessing that came his way.
Mr Mahama, who could not make it to the service, sent a video message in which he recalled how in 2015, he joined Bishop Agyinasare on December 31 night to pray into the New Year and asked God to do away with dumsor, which in his opinion, God did.
The Perez Journey in the Last 30 Years
Today, Perez Chapel International, famous for having the biggest church auditorium in Ghana (Perez Dome) located in a very plush area (Dzorwulu) in the capital city, has 400 local branches in Ghana (16 of those in Accra, alone) and intends planting 300 more this year (2017). Additionally, it has branches in 16 nations across the world and has plans to put up basic and senior high schools across Ghana. It also intends building hospitals in the country and has every intention of ever expanding its horizon as it wins souls for Christ.
All these achievements by the Agyinasares, who co-founded PCI, formerly Word Miracle Church International (WMCI) some 30 years ago (22 March 1987 – birthday of the Bishop), are a source of pride for members who worship there today. But the journey, which started more than three decades ago, has been one of struggles, frustration, disappointment, toil, faith, determination and sacrifice. And no one but Bishop Agyinasare himself can tell that story better as he did a few months ago to his congregation at the Perez Dome on Sunday, 2 April 2017 in a message titled: ‘Pushing It To The Next Level’ to cap the Eagles Summit organised by the church as part of its 30th anniversary celebration.
“Beloved”, he referred to his congregation, “Perez Chapel has come this far by sacrifice.
“We started at the Cultural Centre in Tamale [capital of the Northern Region], then we went to the Warders’ Canteen. …We were thrown out from the Cultural Centre. For three weeks, we had to worship under a tree, for three weeks our church service was under a tree, so, from the tree, we went to Zogbeli, a classroom.
“I lived in a house without electricity for two years; there was no pipe borne water. I remember this Major who came to me for prayers, and in the house I was living in, I didn’t have furniture. I just had a student mattress in the living room, and a kitchen stool, so, when the Major came, I gave him the kitchen stool. I sat on the student mattress; he told me all his problems. After I prayed for him the Holy Spirit told me when he goes he won’t come back again. He was so disappointed: ‘If this is the man that everybody calls Brother Charles and miracles are happening, then he needed help’. But it did not stop us. I pastored the church for two years without a salary, Mama [Mrs Vivian Agyinasare] was a teacher, and, so, her money and a few other things that the Lord provided was what kept us and I had eight men living in my house of two bedrooms and one living room.
“When we put up our first church, our members sold their property: the biggest property some of them had was a motorbike or a bicycle, furniture and some small jewelries. But some sold it so that we could put up our first church. … At that time, wood was very expensive in Tamale – it still is. We put up one of the finest churches then in Tamale. Later on, when we were doing that, God led me to give my car to the church, so, it became an official car. Isn’t God good?
Moving To Accra and Surviving the Wilderness
“But God had been dealing with me to move to [Accra] by 1992. In fact, in 1992, I was preaching in New York and as I lay on my face praying for the meeting as my custom is, in the afternoon, the Holy Spirit began to speak to me about starting a church in Accra, and began to give me a blueprint of what to do when I came to Accra. I wrote them down and I said to Him: ‘Lord, You know that I’m a Champion Atta in Tamale. If you wrote a letter to me and you forgot the address and you wrote Brother Charles and you wrote Tamale, they delivered it to my house. And you want me to come to Accra? No! I like Tamale, I’m a local champion.’ If you went to any office and you mentioned my name … [everybody knew me] …
“Well, by 1994, Bishop Agyinasare continued, ‘There was a local war between the Konkombas and Nanumbas. Curfew was placed on the city, we couldn’t go to church.’ Meanwhile, the Tamale church was what was supporting all our churches we were starting. I realised it was time for me to obey God, and so, we came to the city of Accra. We started meeting at the Kanda Cluster of Schools. But years earlier, Mr Sammy Manu, who was a member in Tamale, had relocated to Accra. His father was the late S.K. Manu, who owned the CFC buildings at [Kwame Nkrumah] Circle, so, he said: ‘Why don’t you come and see if there’s something in our buildings you can use.’ So we located this warehouse but we needed about $10,000 in 1994 to fix the place. You know, in Tamale, I had this four-bedroom house with a three-plot compound that belonged to Bugri Naabu and a boys’ quarters etc. When we came to Accra, I had to go and live in my father’s house, one room and I always made a joke: with my three kids in that one room and our bags everywhere, in the night when there was a ‘shaking’, I couldn’t even shake, when there was a ‘move’, I couldn’t move. So, every night, instead of sleeping, I would spend the time walking about praying that God would give us a breakthrough in the city of Accra, [that] He will create space for us. And by the grace of God, God gave me the opportunity to rent a house by myself, paid for two years, then my landlord … – that’s what he said – the day he came to my house and saw the furniture, said: ‘No, it was two years. Now I’ve changed it. It’s one-and-a-half years.’ So we located in the city of Accra.
“We needed to raise $10,000 in 1994. We didn’t have it, so I decided to travel with my wife. A friend of mine gave me a ticket and also my frequent flyer programme could take care of a ticket for Mama and my daughter, so, we went to London, Germany, USA and I remember I stayed with Auntie Mary then, and I preached and I used to be a good preacher. I think the fire is still there, it is better than those days. But I will preach and sell the books in various churches. I had written ‘Rooted And Built Up In Him’. Every money they gave me for honorarium and for selling the books, I sent it back to Accra so they could use it to fix the place in the CFC buildings. I moved from London to Germany, travelled to the US. In the US I had to leave Mama at Miami to be teaching in a nursery school while I went round preaching because my job is to preach and God would bless me with the honoraria and books and I would send it.
“And I remember when it was time for us to come back after we had spent three months, when we were coming back at the airport, Mummy saw a necklace and she wanted to buy and I said to her: ‘You know every piece of the money we have has a budget, and so I can’t give this money to you but one day I’m going to buy you the kind of necklace you want.’ The next time I turned to look at her, tears were streaming down her eyes and I began to rub her back. Today, any kind of necklace she wants, I can buy. … So this church was started with sacrifice. We refurbished the hall and in October 1994, we started our first Sunday morning service. The first Sunday morning service, 70 people came. … The room was big, lots of empty spaces, so I told them to arrange the benches in such a way that instead of seven people on the bench, three people will sit on a bench, and they should space it so that it looks like ‘we too we dey small’. And then when I was getting ready to preach, the Holy Spirit said: ‘Tell the people to get ready for a double service.’ …So, I got up and said to the people that God said we should get ready for a double service.’ If you were there and I was saying that you’ll be very disappointed. But by the grace of God, in three months’ time we were running a double service. By the end of one year, we were running four services with 3,000 people and when we had our miracle services, people would be sitting in the rain outside expecting the power of God. We would jam the room as much as we could.
“And so by the second year, I became so disturbed that with the multitudes coming, we could lose them, so, we needed a place of our own and from day one when we started church, I told the accountant: ‘Every month, save a certain amount.’ Even though we didn’t have enough to pay the pastors comfortably, I said we should save money. So, by the end of the second year getting to the third year, we had saved what in those days was 40 million cedis and in those days for a young church to save 40 million, we were big men, and, so, I was praying: ‘God give us a place.’ And suddenly God began to open my eyes: whether I was eating, or I was bathing or I was walking, I would see us worshipping on a big park. I began to see it all the time, and so, one day there was this advert in the newspapers that the former Meat Marketing Board was selling all their properties. One of my associates told me, so we came to see, when we walked into this place [referring to the Perez Dome], this place you see now, was a park with giant grass. The old auditorium you see, used to be the warehouse for the cows. It was broken down, run down and the roofs had collapsed. The buildings were dilapidated, there was nothing on this premises. Immediately we walked in here, the grass changed to look like human beings for me. I knew this was the place, so, we put in a bid and by the grace of only almighty God, we won the bid. Then it was time to pay the money, then we said we were paying 750 million cedis and all the money we had in our coffers was 40 million cedis. I don’t know how we were going to get it, so, I went to Sogakope to fast and pray for 10 days seeking the grace of God, came back and we did a fundraising and by the grace of God, God surprised us, people sold their properties, people made sacrifices. I remember those days, I pledged 20 million cedis, the newspapers said they haven’t heard a pastor who is also giving 20 million cedis; it was good and bad. The good side was that they said the pastors they knew, they don’t give when they take an offering. But this man is giving an offering. The bad part was that they couldn’t understand where I was going to get 20 million cedis to give. But by the grace of God, and the sacrifices of His church, we bought this place and fixed this place. This church was built on sacrifice, and, so, if we are going to possess our possession, there must be a dying first. …And so going forward, I charge you and I challenge you to sacrifice and make this church great and write your name in the sands of time.”
Agyinasare’s Calling
“This church is not just one of those churches; this church was started out of a divine commission,” Bishop Agyinasare stressed, recalling: “I came into full-time pastoral ministry in 1983. That year was a year of desperation and frustration for me. I wanted to see God use me like it happened in the Acts of the Apostles, and, so, I would pray night after night believing God for a divine visitation. Then the Morris Cerullo School of Ministry came to town. Dr Cerullo did not come himself. He came on a video cassette. Dr Alex Ness who came on the last day of the School of Ministry anointed us with oil. When I went to my seat to kneel down, while I was kneeling I heard the sound of what seemed like thunder and lightning and I heard an audible voice say to me: ‘My boy Charles, I send you out as I sent Moses, go and I will put my words on your lips and take the world for me.’ After this, when we closed the conference, I sought for a place to fast and pray. On the third day of the fast, I had a continuation of the message: ‘My boy Charles, I give unto you power over demons and principalities, heal the sick, raise the dead, reach the kingdom.’ I said: ‘God, if it’s you, say it one more time.’ It came a second time. I said: ‘God, if it’s you, give me scripture for it.’ Then He gave me Luke Chapter 9: 1&2. It says: ‘Then He called his 12 disciples together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases, and He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.’ So this church is not just a church, it’s a church that has been sent. We are on an assignment, it’s a divine assignment, it’s a divine commission that God sent us to accomplish. And so, I started going round and ministering here a little, there a little, doing crusades but finally in 1987, God sent me to Tamale to start this church that you see, within these 30 years, God took us from a classroom at Zogbeli in Tamale to almost 400 local churches now, in 16 nations of the world. We have 62 churches in the city of Accra.
The Future
“By the grace of God, we have what is said to be the largest auditorium in Ghana, the Perez Dome. We’ve been blessed with a TV station; God has blessed us with a University. As a church, God has been good to us, but as I prayed for this 30th anniversary, the Lord said to me in Joshua 13:1: ‘Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, ‘You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess.’ … God was saying to Joshua, Joshua you have accomplished some things but there’s still more to do. And I came this morning to tell you that God’s word to us is that there is more to do. In fact we are just beginning. The church that started with nothing, today see where we are. If we started with nothing and we are here today, then can you imagine with the resources that we have – both human and material – can you imagine where we are going? …But what will it take for us to possess the land we need to possess? It will take sacrifice. So, God has brought us thus far, but we are not going to settle. It is time God is asking us to sacrifice and to take this gospel to another level.”
That next level, according to Bishop Agyinasare, will require the sacrifice of “giants” in the church, who he described as the “pillars” of Perez Chapel International. As a man of vision, Bishop Agyinasare believes in using the church not only to win souls for Christ, but also raise a generation of morally upright youth who are free of corruption, homosexuality, occultism, and other social vices. He believes in deploying all the resources available to the church to impact society positively. And in all this, he has had the support of a strong and dependable partner, Rev Mrs Vivian Agyinasare, who he never misses the slightest opportunity to celebrate to the world. The couple are blessed with four children: three biological and one adopted. They are Rev Dr Selasie Agyinasare, Rev Francis Agyinasare, Charlene Agyinasare and Clementina Quarshie.

Council of State unfit to be second chamber – Former Presidents https://www.adomonline.com/council-state-unfit-second-chamber-former-presidents/ Sat, 19 Aug 2017 12:26:12 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=410841 Former presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor have corroborated propositions for the revisions in the function and composition of the Council of State.
The two former leaders say the deliberations of the Council must be public. This view, Mr Rawlings observed, is “for once” the first time he agrees with Mr Kufuor on an issue. The two were main speakers at a forum dubbed ‘Accra Dialogues’ organized by the Institute of Law and Public Affairs in partnership with Media General.
The forum themed ‘The Role of the Council of State: A Critical Assay’ was held at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) on Wednesday. The Council has been a visible institution since the return to multi-party democracy in 1992 with Chapter 9 of the 1992 Constitution dedicated to its composition and functions.
Mr Rawlings, who became the first president under the constitution, explained that the Council was catered for in the Constitution on the lines of the African traditional system of governance. According to him, any chief had a council of elders from whom advice is sought on issues boggling the chief.
Mr Rawlings stressed that the Council “is an important constitutional body and should be retained”. “There are many ways to improve the composition, functions and operations of the Council,” he pointed out, stating, nonetheless, that “I do not think they should be given additional powers”. He stressed: “A well-chosen Council of State is an asset to a government”.
Second House Speaking earlier to his predecessor, former President Kufuor said the Council should not be composed on the lines of democracy but that members should be selected based on their standing in society and experiences. For him, professional bodies like the Chamber of Commerce as well as religious bodies should be made to have representatives on the Council.
Mr Kufuor, who succeeded Mr Rawlings as President of Ghana in 2001, said the Council members should be crammed into a second chamber to Parliament for deliberations on national issues. He suggested that their functions should, therefore, be open and transparent, a point agreed to by Mr Rawlings.
The Council of State as captured in the 1992 Constitution is to “counsel the President in the performance of his functions”. While some members are appointed by the president solely and in consultation with Parliament,, 10 others are elected to represent the regions of Ghana.
The appointment of a member may terminated by the president on grounds of “stated misbehavior” with prior approval from Parliament. The Council has every right to consider issues to do with the president, any minister of state or any authority though its recommendations will be implemented only at the discretion of the entities involved.
The current 25-member Council, consummate for the first time in a decade, has Nana Otuo Siriboe II as its Chairman.

VIDEO: Call Kufuor gentle giant not me – Rawlings https://www.adomonline.com/video-call-kufuor-gentle-giant-not-rawlings/ Thu, 17 Aug 2017 05:52:29 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=401041 Former President Jerry John Rawlings during a public lecture at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) was described as a gentle giant after delivering his speech but the former President immediately interrupted the MC saying he isn’t a gentle giant so shouldn’t be called so.
He claimed former President John Agyekum Kufuor should rather be referred to as the gentle giant because that’s what he’s known for and called by many.
JJ Rawlings, who got shocked by the words of the MC quickly interrupted saying “wait, who was he talking about? ……..But Kufuor is the one referred to as the gentle giant. …..Yes but he’s called the gentle giant, you are trying to praise me but gentle giant I don’t hear it”.
This filled the lecture hall with laughter as he justified his stance on the ‘gentle giant’ issue whilst the MC tried to defend his words.
Speaking at a programme held by the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung Foundation in Accra Wednesday, August 16, JJ Rawlings spoke to the theme of the forum – ‘The Role of the Council of State: A Critical Assay’ – by calling for slight revisions to the constitutional provision on the composition of the Council of State.
He ended his lecture with an anecdote about late South African leader Nelson Mandela, narrating how the freedom fighter had to wait for a very long time in a “very rich” country for financial aid that never was.
According to him, when an emissary got to Mr Mandela, who had waited for long at a designated venue of that country’s airport, he told the South African anti-apartheid fighter that the car bringing the cash had involved in an accident.
“Is the money also injured?” Mr Rawlings quotes Madiba as asking the emissary in the face.

In his view, the appointment of former Chief Justice Georgina Wood is one of the prudent decisions the former president took.
“President Kufuor was a man noted for taking good decisions. For the eights years that he spent as President, there are many good decisions that he made about appointments and policies and I think his judgment in elevating Georgina Theodora Wood to be the 12th Chief Justice of our Republic has been fully justified and vindicated,” the president told members of the Ghana Bar Association at an event  to honour the retired Chief Justice in Accra Monday.
He urged the lawyers to emulate the standards set by Mrs Theodora Wood.
“It is good that we have gathered here once again to commend the former Chief Justice and to say that for those of you who are now coming if you behave well and conduct yourself well, you may get some of this honours for your work. That must be the inspiration for all of us that if you conduct yourself well and brighten your corner, leave according to principle and ensure excellence and determination in everything you are doing, you peers will recognize and commend you” the President stated.
