A magnetic voice, a relentless truth-seeker, and a natural storyteller, Kobby embodies everything compelling about sports journalism in the local Akan dialect.

Kobby brings the theatre of sport to life with flair, fire, and finesse, be it the roar of a crowd echoing through a live commentary or the calm, confident dissection of a match post-mortem.

From the humble studios of Breezy FM in Ajumako Bisease, where he first cut his teeth as a drive-time host and sports presenter, to the national spotlight on Adom Asempa FM, Adom FM and Adom TV, Kobby’s journey has been anything but ordinary.

His career, like a well-scripted sports documentary, is marked by chapters of perseverance, growth, and trailblazing achievement.

At ATL FM in Cape Coast, he honed his craft. At KYZZ FM in Takoradi, he led as Head of Sports.

And since 2017, he has become a household name at Multimedia Group, the powerhouse of Ghanaian broadcasting.

In 2023, he etched his name in history as the first Akan/Twi commentator on DSTV.

This milestone didn’t just elevate his profile but redefined his representation in sports commentary across the continent.

Kobby Stonne is not just a broadcaster; he is an experience.

A storyteller at heart, he specializes in delivering credible, timely, and emotionally gripping sports content.

His use of Akan is not merely functional; it’s poetic.

It draws in market women, taxi drivers, professors, and students alike. He speaks to the heart of the nation, blending authenticity with insight, and energy with empathy.

Kobby’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed. His trophy cabinet boasts accolades that testify to his excellence:

  • 2015 Sports Presenter of the Year – STR Awards, Takoradi
  • Foklex Media Awards (2016-2021) – From Sports Host to Akan Commentator of the Year
  • 2022 Sports Commentator of the Year – Ghana Media Personality Awards
  • Citation of Honour – Addison International Center for Emotional Intelligence

He is respected not only for his skill but also for the depth of his contribution to the growth of local sports and media.

Kobby’s values – truth, timeliness, and credibility – echo in everything he does.

Whether he’s co-hosting Sports Nite on Asempa FM, breaking transfer news on Adom Sports Page 2, or engaging fans on his bustling Telegram channel (21,000+ members), Kobby is a journalist first, and an influencer second.

He believes in journalism that doesn’t just inform, but rather empowers.

His digital footprint is formidable:

  • Facebook: 62K+ followers
  • WhatsApp Channel: Over 8,000 subscribers
  • X (Twitter) and Instagram: Thousands tuned in for updates, wit, and wisdom
  • He’s also the COO of Nkrataasem Betting Community, promoting responsible sports betting among Ghana’s youth.

Outside the studio, Kobby is a chess player, a swimmer, and a passionate advocate for inclusivity, especially for persons with visual impairments.

His worldview is grounded in a simple yet powerful belief: “There can be no higher law in journalism than to tell the truth and shame the devil.”

And tell the truth, he does with thunderous conviction and an unmistakable voice that commands both trust and admiration.

If sports is a religion in Ghana, then Kobby Stonne is one of its high priests, leading the congregation with insight, energy, and a deep sense of purpose.

He’s not just reporting the game; he’s changing it.

Kobby Stonne isn’t just a name on your screen; he’s the pulse behind the play, the fire behind the facts, and the trusted voice of Ghanaian sports.

Kobby Stonne tours Voice of America https://www.adomonline.com/kobby-stonne-tours-voice-of-america/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 20:15:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2364138 “Journalists are civilians. We are not targets. We are not combatants. Our pens and our cameras are not weapons of war, but tools of justice. And above all, we are human beings,” – CPJ President Jodie Ginsberg.

My recent visit to Voice of America (VOA) in Washington DC on February 28, 2024 was organized by Go Ghana LLC, a sports and tourism consortium based in the U.S.A. The goal of the tour was to know more about Voice of America’s (VOA) Journalism Standards & Practices.

Voice of America (VOA) is the state-owned news network and international radio broadcaster of the United States of America. It is the largest and oldest of the U.S. – funded international broadcasters. It is an independent federal agency overseeing public service media networks that provide unbiased news and information in countries where the press is restricted.

VOA occupies a unique position of trust worldwide as a consistently reliable source of news and information. VOA considers it a duty to provide accurate, balanced, comprehensive and objective news and information to audiences around the world.

The tour started with an in-depth studio visit where I learned about the rich history of VOA and traced its beginnings to 1942 when it was founded as the US Government Agency for Global Media. One interesting fact about Voice of America is that, it is not under the control or supervision of the President. Even though it is fully government funded.

It is controlled by an independent agency. Their declared mission is “to broadcast accurate, balanced, and comprehensive news and information to an international audience. That gives them the power not to be biased in their broadcast.

I also had the opportunity to engage with other journalists as well, and a one-on-one interview with VOA sports journalist, Mike Hove, who offered perceptive analysis on the significance of Lionel Messi’s entry into the MLS and the changing face of American football.

The impact of Lionel Messi on MLS is a great one as it opens doors for MLS to have great players, he stated. He also made it clear that, football or soccer is still among the top sports in America.

With the U.S.A. government delegation attending the just ended AFCON tournament in Africa, will open more opportunities for Africans to join the USA team. He also emphasized on the importance of getting more attention on the sports than the relegation. Mike elaborated on the closest Sports of Africa which is closest to America is Rugby.

VOA has also honoured some media personnel who gave their lives to protect the truth. They include notable figures like Abdul-Hussein Khazal, Georgi Markov, and Leonid Karas, Ricardo de Mello, Abdul -Hussein Khazal, Abdulrachmann Fatalibey , Iskandar Khatloni, Nazzar Abdulwahid Al-Radhi, Ogulsapar Muradowa, Vira Hyryeh,  Ali Nur Said, Sabawoon Kakar, Maharram Dumani , Basher Fahmi, Mohammed Ali Nuxurkey and many others whose efforts continue to influence VOA’s journalistic philosophy.

VOA produces digital, TV, and radio content in 49 languages, which it distributes to affiliate stations around the world. Its targeted and primary audience is non-American. As of November 2022, its reporting reached 326 million adults per week across all platforms.

With more than three thousand five hundred (3,500) affiliated radio and television stations, VOA continues to be a pillar of global journalism today. Its dedication to provide accurate, in-depth news analysis is emphasized by its aim to counter disinformation, misinformation and speak up for the voiceless.

The legacy of VOA was emphasized by its dedication to impartial reporting, which was demonstrated by its thorough coverage of major international events and its capacity to win praise from listeners all around the world in addition to the American press. With the addition of music and educational programming, particularly its music programmed that has linked the United States and Africa for decades, and its Special English broadcasts targeted at English language learners worldwide, the new millennium marked a revolutionary period for VOA.

Plans are underway for media internship program in U.S.A. through Go Ghana LLC. The purpose of the Media Program is to gain a new perspective on a different culture, and the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills.

VOA is proud of its long and distinguished record of journalistic achievement. Since 1942, in times of war and peace, VOA journalists have upheld the highest standards in their broadcasts to a diverse worldwide audience. Their determined efforts, sometimes in the face of danger, have helped VOA attract its audience and earn its reputation for excellence.

Kobby Stonne at the National Press Club in Washington DC https://www.adomonline.com/kobby-stonne-at-the-national-press-club-in-washington-dc/ Wed, 21 Feb 2024 13:46:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2359505 During a recent visit to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., I compared the Missouri School of Journalism’s prestigious Journalist’s Creed to gain insights into the fundamental ethics and conduct expected of journalists.

This exploration highlights the creed’s enduring significance for public trust and journalistic integrity.

At the National Press Club, journalists and enthusiasts gathered to delve deeper into the essence of journalistic ethics, a principle that has guided the profession through periods of turmoil and innovation.

The discussion centered on the Journalist’s Creed, penned by Walter Williams, the first dean of the Missouri School of Journalism.

The creed emphasizes the critical importance of public trust in journalism and serves as a guiding light for journalists worldwide.

The phrase “The public journal is a public trust” speaks to the duty journalists have to their readers.

Throughout our conversations, the creed’s emphasis on fairness, honest reporting, and clear thinking as cornerstones of journalism resonated, underscoring the profession’s commitment to truth and the well-being of society.

Additionally, the creed’s stance against news being suppressed for any reasons other than promoting societal good was a major topic of discussion.

It underscores the importance of journalism in creating an informed public free from outside influence or self-interest.

The creed also draws a line between journalism and advertising, upholding a single, universal standard of integrity and truth across all media.

When practiced according to its principles, journalism upholds values of respecting people, obeying God, and remaining independent despite authority or popular opinion.

These values not only establish journalism’s moral framework but also ensure its viability and worthiness of the public’s confidence and respect.

The lessons I learned from my visit to the National Press Club reaffirmed the ongoing significance of the Journalist’s Creed.

Almost a century after Williams first expressed it, his vision for journalism still motivates and challenges modern journalists to maintain the highest standards of their field in order to keep journalism as a cornerstone of democracy and defender of public trust.
