The incident occurred on Thursday, December 19, 2024, following allegations of ritual murders.

The mob’s actions were reportedly triggered by the disappearance and subsequent murder of Diana Asante, a 22-year-old mobile money vendor who went missing on December 17, 2024.

After an extensive search by community members, Diana’s lifeless body was discovered three days later in a small tunnel near the town hall shed, wrapped in a bedspread.

Upon recognizing the bedspread, the youth linked it to Joseph Ankomah, a local mortician and food vendor.

They stormed his residence, conducted a search, and allegedly found bloodstains and blood-soaked clothes on the premises.

Outraged by the discovery, the mob confronted Joseph, who, under intense pressure, reportedly confessed to the murder and admitted responsibility for several other killings.

He claimed to have killed four people that year and further alleged that two prominent individuals in the district had hired him for ritual killings, seeking blood and vital organs in exchange for money.

Before the police could intervene, the mob attacked Joseph, beating him severely before setting him on fire, resulting in his immediate death.

The police later retrieved his charred remains and sent them to the mortuary.

Chief Superintendent William Gyamfi, the Mpohor District Police Commander, confirmed the incident to Citi News. However, he declined to provide further details about arrests or the ongoing investigation.

The police have since launched a probe into both the lynching and the allegations of ritual killings, urging calm and cooperation from the community as they work to uncover the truth.

Thousands mourn Ugandan Olympian killed by ex-partner https://www.adomonline.com/thousands-mourn-ugandan-olympian-killed-by-ex-partner/ Sun, 15 Sep 2024 13:48:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2449241 Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who was set ablaze by her former boyfriend and later died has been buried in her father’s homestead in eastern Uganda.

As she was also a member of Uganda’s armed forces, soldiers carried the coffin and she was given a three-volley salute.

Dickson Ndiema attacked Cheptegei with petrol just under a fortnight ago outside her home in neighbouring north-west Kenya, close to where she trained.

The 33-year-old’s killing, and its brutal nature, left her family distraught and shocked many others across the world.

EPA Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei poses for a portrait during Team Uganda flag off to the Paris 2024 Olympics at the State House in Entebbe, Uganda, 16 July 2024EPA: Rebecca Cheptegei’s last race was at the Paris Olympics

It underscored the high levels of violence against women in Kenya and the fact that several female athletes have been victims in recent years.

Among those at the sombre and emotional funeral ceremony in a school field in Bukwo, Cheptegei’s home district, were fellow athletes wearing black T-shirts with the slogan “say no to gender-based violence”.

“We are guilty as [a] government, but also the community is guilty,” Kenya’s Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kipchumba Murkomen told mourners.

“Let us say the truth. It is not true that we did not know even in the local community that Rebecca was facing family problems.”

Cheptegei and Ndiema had reportedly been wrangling over a piece of land.

One of her teammates at the recent Paris Olympics, Stella Chesang, also spoke.

“It is really a sad moment in Uganda… and all of us friends. As a team who we went to Paris with Rebecca, we really felt it because… we were together, enjoying together and it is really sad,” she said.

The Olympic marathon – in which she came 44th – was Cheptegei’s last race.

Earlier, with her coffin on display and draped in the Ugandan flag, local leaders held a memorial service.

They observed a moment of silence and gave a standing ovation as they paid their respects to the late athlete.

Councillors said Cheptegei lived “a simple and focused life” and always offered guidance to her fellow athletes. “She inspired many children in the area to join athletics,” one said.

They also proposed to name a road and a local sports venue in her honour.

Cheptegei died in hospital four days after the attack. Doctors said she had suffered burns on more than 80% of her body which “led to multi-organ failure”.

Ndiema, who was also burned after some of the fuel splashed on his own body, died on Monday.

He attacked the mother-of-two after she returned from a service at a church, the God’s Dwelling Ministry.

The pastor there, Caroline Atieno, remembers a “wonderful… God-fearing person”.

After hearing about what had happened, she managed to speak to Cheptegei on the phone while she was in hospital.

The athlete first asked about her children, who were both fine, the pastor told the BBC’s Africa Daily podcast.

Then Cheptegei talked about her attacker: “You mean Dickson is not able to see all I have done for him? He could not remember even one or two things I have done for him and stop setting me on fire? Why has he done this to me?”

As a solider in the Ugandan armed forces, Cheptegei was given military honours

On Friday, family members, friends and activists against gender-based violence viewed her coffin at a funeral home in the Kenyan town of Eldoret, before it was driven away.

Her mother, Agnes Cheptegei, covering her face in anguish, was wearing a souvenir bag that the athlete received at the recent Olympics.

She was dressed in a T-shirt which had the slogan “being a woman should not be a death sentence” printed on it.

The mother-of-two was the third female athlete to be killed in Kenya over the last three years. In each case, current or former romantic partners were named as the main suspects by police.

In 2021, world-record holder Agnes Tirop was stabbed to death and six months later Damaris Mutua was strangled.

Attacks on women have become a major concern in Kenya. In 2022 at least 34% of women said they had experienced physical violence, according to a national survey.

Some observers are saying that female athletes are becoming increasingly vulnerable.

“[This is] because they go against traditional gender norms where the woman is just in the kitchen and just cooking and taking care of kids. But now female athletes are becoming more independent, financially independent,” said Joan Chelimo, who co-founded Tirop’s Angels to help highlight the issue of violence against women.

“We don’t want this to happen to any other woman, whether an athlete or from the village, or a young girl,” Rachel Kamweru, a spokesperson of the government’s department for gender and affirmative action, told the BBC.

When Cheptegei first got into running, she joined the Uganda People’s Defence Forces in 2008 which helped support her.

Her last race was at the Paris Olympics. Although she came 44th people in her home area still referred to her as “champion”.

She won gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2022.

Man who allegedly killed, secretly buried mother arrested https://www.adomonline.com/man-who-allegedly-killed-secretly-buried-mother-arrested/ Sun, 06 Jun 2021 04:13:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1969816 Benjamin Kofi Yeboah, the 35-year-old man suspected to have killed his mother and secretly buried her at Ayigbe Town, Dome Kwabenya in Accra, has been arrested.

His arrest came within minutes of the exhumation of the body of his mother, Madam Abraa Mansa, 86, who he had allegedly buried in a shallow dugout with her head down and legs up. So shallow was the grave that sand had been spread over the legs to conceal them.

But for the intervention of the assemblyman for Ayigbe Town, Ebenezer Kwao, angry residents were bent on administering instant justice on the man they suspect has caused them so much anguish.

The exhumed body of Madam Abraa Mansa being carried away, while on the right is a portrait of her son, Benjamin Kofi Yeboah, suspected to have killed and buried her secretly

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation, municipal health authorities and police were able to exhume the body shortly before midday, and moments after the police pick-up carrying the body covered in a white body bag had driven away, there were shouts of “there he is, there he is” a few blocks from the crime scene.

A boy had identified the suspect, dressed in a wine shirt over brown trousers, with his backpack in his hand. The alarm drew immediate attention for neighbours to round him up.

He was quickly sent to the Dome Kwabenya District Police Command at Taifa Bankyease.

Family of Benjamin Otchere, the tenant allegedly shot and killed by his landlord at Ofankor in the Greater Accra Region, for allegedly refusing to move out of a two-bedroom apartment following the expiration of his rent, has reacted to a claim made by the suspect, Victor Nana Kankam.

According to the suspect, he shot the deceased in self-defence.

But auntie to the deceased, Reverend Grace Adusei, in an interview with Adomonline.com said the manner in which he shot and killed her deceased nephew does not support his self-defence claim.

“How can you say it was self-defence when you shot multiple times someone who was not armed and fast asleep in his room?” she quizzed.

“We (family of the deceased) leave everything to God and only pray that justice will be delivered because our son’s life has been wrongfully taken,” she added.

Investigation currently being carried out by the Ghana Police Service is to unravel the main motive behind the shooting and killing of Mr Otchere.

Pastor Henry Ezidinma of Arena GoodNews Church, Bayelsa State, Nigeria has been apprehended after allegedly killing five people in a hit-and-run accident.

It’s reported that the accident occurred on the 25th of March, 2020 at Orlando Spot Junction, Opolo.

The cleric allegedly rammed into a man and two of his friends standing at the junction with his car.

It is also alleged that he hit a tricycle with four persons inside and only two survived, bringing the total count of dead people to five.

Narrating how he was nabbed, a relative of one of the deceased said: “My sister-in-law went out on the 2nd of April, 2020 at Imiringi roundabout, when she spotted the bumper of the car that killed her husband and she knew it was the same bumper because it was left at the scene of the accident.

“So she invited a policewoman who is always at the junction and they both followed the Keke carrying the scrap to a mechanic shop and to her greatest surprise, she saw the car Henry used to ram into the victims and it was obvious that he had plans on fixing the damaged car so as to cover his tracks.

“The police officer queried the mechanic as to who brought the car and he claimed he didn’t know. She searched the car and saw the driver’s license of the owner of the car and got in touch with the FRSC. .

“They in turn gave the officer the address of the owner of the car. We got to the owner of the car’s place and it was revealed that Henry had borrowed the car from him and whenever he called to get his car, Henry told him that that the car had a minor accident  which he was fixing before returning it .

“We discovered Henry had made a case with FRSC and that was what we used to track him to his house where he was caught and he confessed to the crime.”

He is currently at Ekeki Police Station in Bayelsa.

My client is exposed to ‘unnecessary danger’ – Lawyer of JB Danquah’s ‘killer’ https://www.adomonline.com/my-client-is-exposed-to-unnecessary-danger-lawyer-of-jb-danquahs-killer/ Wed, 06 Nov 2019 06:24:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1718605 A High Court in Accra has ordered Prison Service personnel who escort Daniel Asiedu, a murder suspect to court to ensure that he gets access to his basic needs.

The court further directed the personnel to ensure that Aseidu gets access to food and clothes.

“You can’t deprive him of food, he has the right to food and clothing. Ensure that he gets his peace,” the trial Judge, Justice George Buadi said on Tuesday.

The court’s order came after Asiedu through his counsel, Mr Augustine Obuor, complained that his client had been exposed to “unnecessary danger” at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

“My Lord I pray that the court listens to him,” Mr Obuor added.

Asiedu then informed the court that his co-inmate, who he alleged was mentally challenged, had attacked and assaulted him and as a result, he was bleeding through his ears.

Asiedu said his attacker also threw away his clothing.

According to Asiedu, he had complained to Senior Prison officials but nothing had been done about the issue.

He said he had to borrow clothes before attending Court.

Asiedu also informed the court that due to the assault, he now had to sleep under a bed for the past 10 days.

However his accomplice, Vincent Bossu recounted to the court that Asiedu engaged the said inmate in a fight, adding it was not true that he (Asiedu) pushed the inmate after he was attacked.

Meanwhile, Mrs Sefakor Batse a Senior State Attorney informed the court that the Psychiatric Consultant, Dr Samuel Ohene, who examined Asiedu had been served with a hearing notice to attend court.

However, Mrs Batse said when the case investigator followed up to Accra Psychiatric Hospital, he was informed that the Consultant is out of the jurisdiction but informed the court that the Consultant would be back in a week’s time.

The court then adjourned the matter to November 14 2019. It further ordered the Registrar of the court to serve hearing notice on the Consultant.

Defence counsel is expected to conclude a cross-examination of the Consultant. Asiedu is standing trial for his alleged involvement in the murder of J.B. Danquah Adu, former of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa North at his residence in the year 2016 at Shaishie, near East Legon.

He is standing trial with Bossu who has been charged with conspiracy.

Asiedu has additionally been charged with murder. The court is yet to take their plea and they are currently in lawful custody.

Defence counsel had raised the issue of insanity of Asiedu hence prayed the court for Asiedu to undergo medical examination.

After undergoing the medical examination, the results showed that Asiedu was mentally fit to stand trial.

After the medical report, defence counsel sought to cross-examine the psychiatric consultant who compiled the said report.

The defence counsel is yet to conclude his cross-examination because of non-availability of the consultant.

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has said one of the alleged killers of J. B. Danquah-Adu is living a luxurious life in prison.

According to him, Daniel Asiedu, one of the suspects standing trial for the murder of the late MP has been allowed by the police investigating the matter to use two phones to contact his contractors.

The Assin Central MP made the comment on Adom TV’s Morning Show “Badwam” Tuesday

He claimed some persons in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicate regularly with Daniel Asiedu and even influenced him to implicate the NPP in the murder case.

ALSO: Opuni regains frozen assets

But Ken Agyapong has vowed to ensure justice is served and the culprits brought to book.

“We won’t allow a whole Member of Parliament to die and allow the killers to go scot free. Ghanaians are behaving as though the murder is a small thing. I won’t allow that to happen. A person will kill a whole MP and the police will allow the killer to feel free as though nothing has happened”

“He has been allowed to use two phones and being manipulated by some persons in NDC. I know that JB Danquah’s death was state managed by the NDC” Ken Agyapong opined.

The then NDC government was accused by a section of the public for the murder of the legislator in 2016, but on Wednesday June 20, 2018, Daniel Asiedu, one of the suspects standing trial for the murder of the late J.B. Danquah Adu, ‘confessed’ that he was contracted by some persons within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to kill the lawmaker.

He told the presiding judge, Arit Nsemoh, he would name his contractor and disclosed he was not given what he was promised before executing the plot.

Asiedu also said he has not heard anything from his clients apart from only one of them who visited him once after his arrest.

But speaking on the matter, the controversial MP wondered why the suspect, Daniel Asiedu would make such damning allegations against the NPP when he is aware of those responsible for the murder.

Mr. Agyapong also accused the former Director-General of the CID, COP Prosper Agblor and Director General of Operations at the police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of covering up the truth and defending the suspect as far as the murder case is concerned.

“Kwaku Baako wants to sacrifice me for Stan Dobge. Why should he question why I was the first person to see the killer? The police CID investigating the matter are shielding the killer and have allowed him to spew lies.

“I will force court to supine Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and COP Prosper Agblor to come and witness because they have vital information and are refusing to tell the public about it and always lying to us.

“Police officers are supposed, to tell the truth, and not to defend individuals. I will force them to speak because they are all involved in the act” he claimed.

Old Vandal ‘killer’ remanded; case adjourned to January 9 https://www.adomonline.com/old-vandal-killer-remanded-case-adjourned-january-9/ Wed, 13 Dec 2017 08:21:33 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=754911 The prime suspect in the killing of an old Vandal at the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, has been remanded in police custody to reappear before the court on January 9, 2018.
At the first court hearing on Tuesday, the Madina District Magistrate Court presided over by His Lordship, Richard Delali Anku, adjourned the case to give the police ample time to conclude their investigations.
The suspect, George Osei Mensah, is standing trial for allegedly killing Martin Tweneboah Kodua [Chief Tipsy], an Old Vandal, at Commonwealth Hall on Saturday, December 9. 2017.
A pathologist at the 37 Military Hospital is expected to conduct an autopsy on the deceased, and submit the report to the Police.
What happens next?
The Attorney General’s department will be furnished with the suspect’s statement, autopsy report and docket for advice.
The trial is expected to commence after the AG’s advice on the matter.
The suspect’s plea may be taken at the next hearing if the police concludes its investigations, and the autopsy report is ready with the AG’s advice sought on the matter.
The suspect faces a likely charge of manslaughter or murder.
The suspect is reported to have stabbed an Old Vandal, whose name was given as Nathaniel Tweneboah Koduah, alias Chief Tipsy multiple times on Saturday night, at the charging grounds of Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana.
The incident occurred after a heated argument between the two while they traveled back to campus from a funeral of an Old Vandal.
According to the Old Vandals Association, the two were separated on several occasions during their heated arguments on the bus.
“The argument became heated and the two had to be separated on several occasions by others. It went on and on. So, when we got to Atomic Junction, the driver was advised to stop and the two were thrown out of the bus. Others joined them.”
“When they got to the Hall, they had not stopped. It was at this time that the killer allegedly grabbed the knife of the khebab seller and cut the victim several times with it. The victim bled profusely and was rushed to the Legon Hospital by the killer and some Vandals… the doctors could not save his life. He was pronounced dead around 1900 hours GMT,” the Old Vandals’ statement said.
Meanwhile, the management of the University of Ghana has called for calm among parents and the general public following the incident, noting that “no threat has been identified which could cause any danger to our students in this respect.”
It further said the Careers and Counseling Centre of the school is on standby to counsel any student who may have been traumatized by the incident.

I didn’t kill Major Mahama – Assemblyman https://www.adomonline.com/didnt-kill-major-mahama-assemblyman/ Fri, 04 Aug 2017 12:07:06 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=362751 Defence lawyers in the trial of the 20 persons over the murder of Major Maxwell Adams at Denkyira-Obuase in the Central Region, have denied allegations that William Baah, the assemblyman of the area, mobilized the accused persons for the mob action that led to the death of the soldier.
According to George Bernard Shaw, that aspect of the facts of the police before the court was a complete variable from the instructions from his clients.
He told the Accra Central District Court, presided over by Ebenezer Kweku Ansah yesterday, that at the appropriate time and forum, the defence would “disabuse the minds” of the jury who would try the case.
Suspects
The accused persons are William Baah aka Misky, teacher/assemblyman; Yaw Annor aka Agbahowa, Mason; Akwasi Baah aka Baya, farmer; Kwame Tuffour aka Asowonan, driver; Akwasi Asante, farmer; Joseph Appiah Kubi aka Kum Dede, driver; Kwadwo Animah, mason; Philip Badu, prisons assistant; Kofi Nyame aka Abortion, farmer and Michel Anim aka Nana Anim.
The rest are Bernard Asamoah aka Daddy, driver’s apprentice; Ebenezer Appiah aka Akwesi Adjei; Charles Quainin aka Kwesi Boah, vulcanizer; Anthony Amoah aka Kwaku Manu/Amis, okada operator; Bismark Donkor aka Dada, farmer; Kwame Agyei, farmer; Solomon Sackey, carpenter; John Bosie aka Abodie, driver’s mate; Vivian Sahene aka Mafia, unemployed and Kojo Fordjour.
According to the prosecutor, DSP George Amegah, the accused persons and 13 others currently at large, acted together with a common purpose to murder the soldier.
They are part of 32 suspected persons initially dragged before the court for allegedly playing various roles in the murder of the 5 Battalion of Infantry soldier on May 29, 2017.
Major Mahama was the commander of a military detachment stationed at Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region to check the activities of galamsey. He was lynched by a mob who took him for an armed robber.
They were provisionally charged for conspiracy to murder and murder.
Hearing
At the hearing yesterday, Shaw, while denying the assertion of the police, said they (police) ought to expedite investigations into the matter.
Quoting Article 14 (3) (4) of the 1992 Constitution, the lawyer stated that, that provision is there in order not for the accused persons to lose track of what happened.
Shaw noted that although the defence sympathizes with the family of the deceased, “at the same time the rule of law behooves on us to scrutinize the evidence of the prosecution” in relation to the matter.
The lawyer noted that some of the initial suspects had been discharged, indicative of the fact that not everyone arrested in connection with the case would be found guilty.
He served notice that now that the “hullabaloo surrounding the matter was waning,” the defence would go to a higher court to secure bail for his clients.
Wanted
Earlier, DSP Amegah had said the police were still looking for 13 more persons suspected to have played roles in the death of Major Mahama and urged the court to remand the accused persons into the Nsawam Prisons.
The prosecution said a duplicate docket of the case had been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department for advice.
The police are currently on the heels of Yaw Amakwah, Kwabena Kenkeba, Tikwa, Yaw Boadu, Fuseni, Madam Deedikor, Eric Asante aka Yaw Agade, Nana Kwadjo aka Naa Ajo, Kweku Diesel, Kofi Ahenkora, Solo, Rasta and Wiser.
Sitting continues on September 7.

Cleveland Facebook killer hunted by police https://www.adomonline.com/cleveland-facebook-killer-hunted-police/ Mon, 17 Apr 2017 09:50:21 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=79871 Police in Cleveland are searching for a man who fatally shot a “random” victim and posted the footage on Facebook.

The suspect, Steve Stephens, later said in a separate video post that he had killed 13 people and was looking to kill more.

Cleveland police chief Calvin Williams confirmed one killing but said they did not know of any other victims.

Mr Williams said that “multiple forces” were looking for Mr Stephens, who “needs to turn himself in”.

The victim has been identified by Cleveland police as   74-year-old Robert Godwin.

“There is no need for any further bloodshed in this incident tonight,” police chief Calvin Williams said at a news conference on Sunday.

“We need to bring this to a conclusion today,” he said, adding: “We need to get Steve from the streets.”

Mr Williams said that authorities had put out alerts “in the state of Ohio and beyond” over the “senseless” incident, and urged people not to approach the suspect, who he said was likely to remain armed and dangerous.

The Cleveland police department issued a photo of Mr Stephens, 37, on its website, describing him as a 6ft 1in (1.9m) tall black male of medium complexion.

He is thought to be driving a white or cream-coloured SUV (sports utility vehicle).

Mr Williams said that the victim appeared to have been selected at random in what he described as a “senseless” murder.

He added that Mr Stephens “clearly has a problem” and urged him to come forward in order to “receive the help that he needs”.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is collaborating with local police as it investigates the incident, CNN reports.

The mayor of Cleveland, Frank Jackson, said that he wanted Mr Stephens to know that “he will eventually be caught”.

A fundraising page set up to help the family of Mr Godwin had received more than half of its target of $20,000 (£16,000) within hours of publication.

Facebook said in a statement on Sunday that it co-operates fully with the authorities in incidents where there are “direct threats to physical safety”.

Responding to the reports involving Mr Stephens, the company said that it was “a horrific crime”, adding that it “does not allow this kind of content” on its site.

It is not the first time that a fatal shooting has been posted or streamed on Facebook. Last June, a man was shot dead while live-streaming a video of himself on the streets of Chicago. In March, an unidentified man was shot 16 times while broadcasting live.

Facebook’s live-streaming feature, which was launched in 2010, allows anyone to broadcast online in real time.

Nigeria sentences killer police to death https://www.adomonline.com/nigeria-sentences-killer-police-death/ Fri, 10 Mar 2017 13:21:09 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=20041 Two former policemen in Nigeria have been sentenced to death over the most infamous case of extrajudicial killing in the country’s modern history.

Ezekiel Achejene and Emmanuel Baba were convicted of murdering two of the Apo Six – six young civilians who were shot dead in 2005.

Police initially tried to cover up the deaths, saying the victims were armed robbers who had opened fire first.

But an earlier judicial panel of inquiry rejected that story.

The government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo later apologised on behalf of the police for the killings and paid $20,300 (£16,700) in compensation to each of the families.

However, a trial to determine which individuals were behind the killings was repeatedly delayed.

Three other former officers on trial at the High Court in Abuja, who all denied involvement, were acquitted for lack of evidence while a sixth suspect was never brought to trial.

The judge, Ishaq Bello, said the court had had no option but to convict Achejene and Baba after they had confessed to shooting two of the victims on the order of senior officers.

The two men had tried to retract their confessions during the trial but the court rejected this.

“The two defendants have no regard for the sanctity of human lives,” Judge Bello was quoted by AFP news agency as telling the court. “They are not only over-zealous but also extremely reckless.”

The case, which was investigated by the BBC in 2009, concerned six young Nigerians from Apo, a satellite settlement of Abuja: Ekene Isaac Mgbe, Ifeanyin Ozor, Chinedu Meniru, Paulinus Ogbonna and Anthony Nwokike, who were all car spare parts dealers, and Augustina Arebu.

They came under fire when they approached a police checkpoint in their car.

Four died on the spot and the other two were taken to a police station alive. The bodies of all six were found together later, along with weapons which the panel heard had been planted by police.

The phrase Apo Six has been trending on Twitter in Nigeria, with some tweeters saying they are pleased that someone has finally been held accountable.

Many Nigerians complain that police officers and the military rarely face justice for alleged abuses against civilians.
