KATH installs additional dialysis machines to offer kidney treatment to more patients https://www.adomonline.com/kath-installs-additional-dialysis-machines-to-offer-kidney-treatment-to-more-patients/ Wed, 15 May 2024 09:05:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2395069 The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi is positioning itself to lead in the management and treatment of kidney diseases and renal failure.

To this end, the hospital has installed three brand new dialysis machines which are in full operation, and will install an additional 12 new dialysis machines by the end of May 2024, to augment its operations.

Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, who made this known, said prior attention would also be given to children with renal problems to undergo dialysis treatment at the facility.

Speaking to a cross-section of journalists in Kumasi, he said hitherto, dialysis treatment for children with kidney problems seemed not to exist.

The hospital was therefore taking steps to provide dialysis services to give children the opportunity to live, irrespective of the fact that they might have developed end-stage renal failure.

“Usually, we do not have dialysis for children, and it is one area we are looking at as a hospital – to give children the opportunity to live irrespective of their end stages of renal failure.”

Prof. Addai-Mensah said some benevolent organizations were helping to bring dialysis machines to boost the hospital’s operations and help failing kidneys function properly.

He said the installation and efficient operations of dialysis treatment at the facility would ease the burden on Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and help reduce the cost of treatment for patients.

Professor Addai-Mensah called for more support from corporate organizations, individuals, and civil society organizations to help the facility provide advanced and efficient clinical care to patients.

On the ongoing ‘Health KATH Project’ he said work was progressing steadily with the leaking roofs being repaired.

“Typically, two weeks after rains, you will still see drippings on the floors of D5, and the upper floors but that is not what is going on now”, he explained.

He commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the brainchild of the project, for leading the appeal to advance healthcare delivery in the country.

Gospel musician Erico opens up on battle with kidney issue https://www.adomonline.com/gospel-musician-erico-opens-up-on-battle-with-kidney-issue/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 03:47:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2381958 Gospel musician Eric Oduro has revealed for the first time his harrowing battle with kidney issue that almost cost him his life.

He made the revelation in an interview with Emelia Brobbey on Adom TV‘s Okukuseku, when asked about absence in the music scenes.

Erico revealed he had to put his career on hold to seek medication to save his life as his kidney failure was taking a toll on his overall health.

Fortunately, he was diagnosed while his issue was at an early stage, buying him more time to seek alternative solutions.

When the orthodox medications and treatment became quite costly, the Ebube hitmaker said he has to resort to herbal medication which proved very helpful.

Just six months after active care, he said he saw improvement in his situation and he did not get to the dialysis stage.

While his health improved, ironically, his finances and physical wellbeing took a tumble.

Nonetheless, he is grateful to God for surviving the entire ordeal.

Sometimes you wish you’re gone – Patients talk about living with kidney failure, costs https://www.adomonline.com/sometimes-you-wish-youre-gone-patients-talk-about-living-with-kidney-failure-costs/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 07:15:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2302839 Kojo Baffour Ahenkora has been battling with end-stage kidney failure for eight years. His kidneys are unable to filter blood, extract excess water for proper urination or perform other functions properly.

In order to survive, he has become has become a regular visitor at the Korle Bu Renal Unit. Each week, he visits the health facility three times to get the assistance of the dialysis machine to perform the duties of his once healthy kidneys.

However, the cost involved with the dialysis treatment makes him wonder how much longer he can undergo the procedure.

Over the past week, people living with kidney failure have been at the forefront of news coverage because of the recent hike in the price of dialysis treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital earlier blamed the high cost of taxation for the recent increase in the cost of dialysis.

The news, in the days that followed, has given the general public an insight into the huge costs patients and their families are incurring because of their illness.

Mr Ahenkora says although he has been on dialysis for nearly decade, it doesn’t get easier. For him, he has been able to meet the financial demands of treatment because of a charity organisation that works with Korle Bu and with the help of friends and family.

Speaking at JoyNews’ Thought Leadership Event on dialysis, Mr Ahenkora said that without that help many patients would not be alive today.

However, since the limitation of dialysis to emergency cases at Korle Bu due to a shortage in consumables, he says getting treatment at private facilities has become a challenge.

This is because they have to pay between GH₵‎500 to GH₵‎1000 every session, he said. Mr Ahenkora added that because he is not fit, he is jobless and unable to solely get those funds for his sessions.

“On my diagnosis, I’m supposed to do three (dialysis a week), but I don’t have the means, so I do twice a week. Even twice a week, I’m not able to do it. I manage it sometimes and go for once a week,” he added.

Mr Ahenkora noted that although he has loved ones who help sometimes, it is not enough and has to resort to calling friends and other companions for help. Unfortunately, some of them have also started to avoid his calls.

“Now we are becoming a burden to society. You pick up a phone, you want to call your friend and he knows you’re coming to ask for money so they don’t answer the call…eventually you turn into a beggar and it’s so embarrassing. Sometimes, like I keep saying, you wish one day you wake up and you are gone peacefully.”

“It’s almost about a week, I have not gone for it (dialysis) I’m just managing the situation…sometimes you can’t sleep at night, you can’t breathe when you lie down, so, you have to sit down throughout the night. But if the money is there and you are doing regular dialysis, you will be fit. So it’s a very challenging issue.”

Mr Ahenkora said that hospitals are not charity homes to be offering the services for free and thus it is important for the government to provide aid for patients.

Also on the show, a patient, Thomas Vincent Cann, said having renal failure for a decade has been not just physically draining but emotionally and psychologically as well, for him, his family and his friends.

Mr Cann said in the early days of his diagnosis he had to be referred to see a psychologist adding “I was going through a lot and there are times that I wanted to give up, there are times you want to end it all, die peacefully and then everything ends.”

“There were times it got to that stage, you question is it really worth it, struggling and all of that. But I went through psychological therapy and that even boosted my confidence. Because there were times I didn’t want to see my own picture I couldn’t look into the mirror. I had changed physically, everything had changed and I kind of didn’t like what I was seeing. The new me that I was seeing was really hard to take,” Mr Cann said.

He added that on top of his issues, his friends had to use the media to raise funds for his dialysis treatment and he found himself being talked about on radio and TV. He avoided the media so he could stop hearing people talk about him.

It has been a decade and although he works, Mr Cann says that the treatment can have an effect on a person’s productivity.

He stated that because of the long queue at the facility, he gets to the hospital as early as 3:30 a.m., queue for about four hours, sit for the treatment that takes about four hours and even after he feels drained.

Mr Cann said if he does not go early, it means he will not be able to leave the hospital early and make time for work.

“Thankfully my bosses understand me so sometimes I get that flexibility to sometimes you know go to work and all that,” he added.

Hot audio: Waist trainers could cause kidney failure – Doctor reveals https://www.adomonline.com/waist-trainers-cause-kidney-failure-doctor-reveals/ https://www.adomonline.com/waist-trainers-cause-kidney-failure-doctor-reveals/#comments Fri, 25 Aug 2017 16:03:33 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=434131 A medical doctor is warning of dire consequences for women who constantly wear waist cinchers or trainers for an hour glass body shape.
According to Dr Ebenezer Inkoom, some of the most common problem are decreased abdominal muscle tone, visceral displacement and atrophy of the abdominal walls.
Speaking on Adom FM’s midday news Friday, owner of Inkoom hospital at Spintex road in Accra noted that other health risks include deformation of the stomach, liver and lungs and decreased breathing capacity.
He indicated that, the long term use of the product could cause permanent organ and nerve damage.
“First of all it tightens the stomach and changes it shape. It can cause the gastric acid to rise up to the oesophagus -reducing blood to the liver and kidney. It further causes irritations and reactions to the body…” he described.
Dr. Inkoom blamed the upsurge of the use of waist trainers among Ghanaians women on endorsement made by celebrities.
“Just because a celebrity promotes it doesn’t mean that it’s safe or that it works or that it’s proven,” he stressed.
At best, he said waist trainers should be worn for workouts at the gym to achieve the needed results.
According to Dr Ebenezer Inkoom, people who wear waist trainers can resort to diet or gym programs than putting their lives at risk in the long run.
“In about 15-20 years, people who usually wear the waist trainers will start having medical complications…” Dr. Inkoom warned.
