The operation took place around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, when a joint team of security personnel and the Assembly’s taskforce moved into the Kasoa Central Business District. Structures located in front of the main lorry station were pulled down as part of the exercise.

The move follows earlier resistance from petty traders, who last month opposed the Assembly’s decision to remove the temporary structures.

Speaking to Adom News, Abdul Rhaman Mohammed, a member of the Assembly who led the operation, said the exercise was not abrupt, noting that authorities had engaged traders on several occasions prior to the demolition.

Officials further indicated that measures have been put in place to prevent traffic congestion within the Kasoa Central Business District during the demolition process.

They added that alternative trading space has been provided at the Kasoa Iron City Market, which was constructed by the previous administration.

The demolition forms part of the Assembly’s broader redevelopment agenda for the Kasoa Old Market, though concerns remain over the immediate impact on affected traders.

The Kasoa Petty Traders Association, representing nearly 1,000 traders, warned that the move would negatively affect hundreds of traders who cannot afford the rent for the new stores.

Appiah Roger, the association’s secretary, described the assembly’s actions as contradictory to the government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy during a press briefing with Adom News.

The traders are calling for the decision to be revoked and for a more extensive dialogue to be held.

Some traders vowed to continue their protest “until they lose their last blood,” with many appealing to President John Dramani Mahama for intervention.
