The new routes aim to ensure the safety of pedestrians while the footbridges undergo maintenance.

Speaking to residents, drivers and commuters during an inspection on Thursday, the Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, called for full cooperation with the new traffic and safety arrangements. He stressed that discipline on the roads was essential to protecting lives.

He cautioned drivers against parking along the roadside, noting that such practices contribute to congestion and obstruct pedestrian movement.

The Mayor further urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations and give pedestrians the right of way, particularly at the designated crossing points, warning that failure to do so could have fatal consequences.

He reiterated that he is committed to enforcing the law, stating that authorities would not hesitate to take action against recalcitrant drivers.

He cited an incident where a driver attempted to defy traffic control measures despite the presence of officials, adding that the individual would be handed over to the police.

Mr Allotey also appealed to residents to support the Assembly’s efforts, stressing that development can only be achieved through collective responsibility and cooperation.

He warned that any attempt to bypass designated routes or obstruct ongoing works would attract sanctions, assuring the public that the repair works would ultimately deliver a safer and more reliable facility.

Kaneshie Footbridge rehabilitation to take six to nine months – AMA https://www.adomonline.com/kaneshie-footbridge-rehabilitation-to-take-six-to-nine-months-ama/ Mon, 06 Apr 2026 12:10:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2648278 The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced that the planned rehabilitation of the Kaneshie footbridge is expected to take between six and nine months to complete. The bridge was closed on Thursday, April 2, to allow for urgent repairs due to its deteriorated condition.

Speaking on Channel One on April 6, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at AMA, said the footbridge is part of a wider road improvement initiative in the area. He noted that this rehabilitation will be the first major overhaul since the bridge’s construction.

“Currently, the state of the bridge requires extensive work. Experts estimate that the project will take between six to nine months. The surrounding roads will also be closed for drainage works so that the entire area can be properly upgraded. Once completed, the bridge will be fully functional for pedestrians and daily commuters,” he said.

Mr. Ankrah assured the public that the renovations would significantly strengthen the bridge, extending its lifespan. “The type of work being undertaken will enhance durability, and we are hopeful the bridge will last ten years or more,” he added.

Meanwhile, Frank Nkansah, Municipal Chief Executive for Ablekuma Central, attributed the footbridge’s deteriorating condition partly to long-standing occupation by traders, which had hindered routine maintenance.

He noted that critical components, including barriers and structural footings, had suffered extensive damage, showing visible signs of rust and wear.
