He was joined by musician Kwabena Kwabena, the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), African Paralympic President Samson Deen, and several other dignitaries who participated in the walk ahead of the games.

The tournament, which officially opened at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, has drawn over 50 institutions competing across 15 sporting disciplines, cementing its place as a flagship event on Ghana’s corporate calendar.

The Chief of Staff also performed the ceremonial kickoff to signal the start of the football competition.

At the heart of the competition is football, but the stadium’s courts will also buzz with volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, draughts, chess, scrabble, and even e-sports, reflecting the tournament’s rich diversity.

The day’s events kicked off at 6:00 a.m. with an energetic 5 km race walk and aerobics session across the Legon campus.

A key highlight so far is the participation of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, who joined the participants for the walk and aerobics before performing the ceremonial kick to officially open the tournament.

This symbolic gesture underscored the Invitational’s growing significance as a national event promoting fitness and unity.

Football, the centrepiece of the tournament, will be underway at two venues.

On the main stadium pitch, the action will commence at 8:00 a.m. with a thrilling opener between Heritage Christian University and the Multimedia Group.

Other key fixtures include Adansi Travels vs. McDan, GhIPSS vs. ECG, and a highly anticipated corporate showdown between the National Identification Authority and Star Assurance Ltd.

The morning’s lineup will also feature big names like Multichoice Ghana, KOA Impact Ltd, Youth Employment Agency, and NPA, all vying for a spot in the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, equally intense battles will be taking place on the training pitch, with teams such as La Community Bank, Minerals Commission, and DHL Ghana Ltd competing for a place in the next stage.

The schedule is packed, with the road to the grand finale promising fierce contests as companies battle for bragging rights and the coveted championship title.

Beyond the football pitch, the Invitational is a comprehensive showcase of athletic and team-building events.

From 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the stadium’s courts will host a diverse range of sports, including volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, draughts, chess, scrabble, and e-sports.

The day’s activities will continue into the afternoon with events such as swimming, penalty shootouts, sack races, and arm wrestling.

The tournament will reach its climax this evening between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. with the men’s football final, relays, and the 100-meter dash, culminating in an awards ceremony to crown the overall champion and other top performers.

In a joint statement signed by Francis Fiifi Koomson, General Manager, Joy Brands and David Max Fugar, General Manager, Sales and Customer Service, the Group said the decision was ”made in solidarity with the bereaved families and in respectful observance of the national mood. We also acknowledge that many of the participating companies had expressed similar sentiments and indicated their unavailability to participate under the current circumstances.”

This follows the tragic helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of all eight individuals on board.

The victims of the tragic crash are:

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Mr Samuel Aboagye, Former Parliamentary Candidate
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafimi Anala
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo

Government has since declared three days of national mourning and reflection.

”A new date for the tournament will be communicated to all participating companies in due course as we engage managers of the stadium today.”

”We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and deeply appreciate your continued support,” the statement added.

Up to forty-eight organizations have signed up for the tournament, which was originally scheduled for August 9, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Among the companies are Royal Sweet Limited, Ayuda Hub Limited, Peeva Beverages, Emigoh Ghana Limited, The Luckiest *712#, Sapholda Ventures Limited, Heritage Christian University, Premier Health Insurance, Axis Pension Trust, Nkulenu Industries Limited, ARB Apex Bank PLC, and Sawer-Nanor & Sons Company Limited.

Also taking part are Piwak Natural Health, the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), the National Identification Authority, IS Evolutions Consult Limited, Multichoice Ghana (DStv), McDan Group, Consolidated Shipping Agencies Limited, Tropo Farms Limited, Old Mutual, BulkClix Apps Limited, Alsale Services Limited, Aldrich Care Solutions, the National Insurance Commission, Omni BSIC, Star Assurance Limited, Serene Insurance, Zenith Bank, and Koa Impact Limited.

Other confirmed participants include the Youth Employment Agency, DHL, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Adansi Travels, Ashfoam, Equity Health Insurance, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Labadi Beach Hotel, the Multimedia Group Limited (MGL), La Community Bank, Kantanka Herbal Pharmaceuticals, GOIL, SIC Life, and Yak Decor.

These organisations will compete in a variety of disciplines, including aerobics, football, basketball throw, table tennis, lawn tennis, swimming, sack race, 100-metre dash, volleyball, lime and spoon, tug of peace, chess, ludo, oware, armwrestling, scrabble, and e-games.

The host team defeated Minerals Commission in the final to claim their only gold medal in the tournament held on Saturday, October 26.

The event, organised by JoySports and sponsored by the Minerals Commission, McDan Group, The Luckiest, Skechers, Emigoh Ghana, Peeva Beverages, and Caveman Watches, featured about 29 corporate organisations.

Both finalists went through four knockout faces before booking a place in the last two, treating fans with excitement on the day.

The Multimedia Group defeated Republic Bank, Emigoh Ghana, Nationwide Tech and Aramex en route to the final.

Minerals Commission on the other end, faced competition from Labadi Beach Hotel, Nationwide Tech, OmniBSIC and Adansi Travels.

In the end, it was a straight 2-0 win for the host team who won both the left and right arms to claim gold.

The JoySports Invitational Tournament 2024 drew thousands from corporate organisations across the country, solidifying its status as Ghana’s premier corporate sports event.

The event was making a return after a four-year absence.

The highly esteemed company finished as runners-up in the football tournament, claiming silver among the 29 organizations that participated in the event held on Saturday at the University of Ghana Stadium.

In a statement released, Yomi Yoghurt congratulated its representatives and revealed plans to “specially” reward them.

“In recognition of your hard work, our CEO, Mr. Stephen Eku, has taken an extraordinary step to celebrate this success.

 

“He has graciously donated his entire October salary to all Emigoh employees, with a special portion going to those who participated in the tournament.

“This gesture reflects his deep appreciation for each of you, the heart and soul of Emigoh, whose commitment made this achievement possible.”

Men’s football competition was among 15 exciting disciplines at the tournament, including football, CEOs’ and ladies’ penalty shootouts, a women’s 50m dash, men’s 100m, and tug of peace.

The next edition promises to be even bigger and better.

With 28 corporate teams competing, the draw revealed the matchups for the opening round of games.

Each organization will battle it out in a series of exciting fixtures, hoping to advance through the stages and claim the coveted trophy.

The competition, which is Ghana’s biggest corporate sports event, will take place on Saturday, October 26, at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.
