In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the media house said it received with deep concern reports that Mr. Kanaluwe was attacked on January 26 while performing his lawful daily activities.

The journalist was not filming or covering any military operation at the time of the incident.

The company described the attack as “an unwarranted act of violence, a serious abuse of power, and a violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution.”

“Media General strongly condemns this act of violence against a journalist who was going about his daily activities without filming any military exercise,” the statement added.

Media General has called on the Military High Command and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to conduct an urgent and thorough investigation and ensure that all personnel found culpable are identified and sanctioned in line with military and national laws.

The media house has also petitioned the Ministry of Defence to address what it describes as a growing pattern of military brutality against civilians, including journalists, during internal security operations.

“The use of excessive force against unarmed citizens is unacceptable and must not be allowed to persist,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and the safety of journalists, Media General stated it will continue to pursue all lawful avenues to ensure accountability and safeguard the rights and welfare of its reporters across the country.

“Journalism is not a crime, and no journalist should be subjected to violence, intimidation or abuse in the course of duty,” the statement concluded.

This incident has reignited national conversations on the protection of journalists and the need for strict oversight of security personnel during civilian operations.

GJA threatens to boycott all police activities https://www.adomonline.com/gja-threatens-to-boycott-all-police-activities/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 17:04:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562081

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service to take decisive action against officers and civilians involved in recent assaults on journalists, warning of a nationwide boycott of police-related activities if the Service fails to comply.

Speaking at a press conference, GJA President Albert Dwumfuor demanded a public report on the police officer who allegedly assaulted GHOne TV reporter Kwabena Agyekum Banahene during the Ablekuma North rerun.

The officer was interdicted following the incident on July 11, 2025.

Subsequently, the Accra Regional Police Command confirmed in a July 17 statement that the officer had been formally charged with assault. The Command further stated that it had obtained statements from complainants and witnesses to aid the ongoing investigations.

However, Mr. Dwumfuor stressed that both the officer and any civilians implicated in the attack must face immediate disciplinary action.

“We cannot continue to accept a culture of impunity against journalists. If, after seven days, we do not see concrete action, we will boycott all police-related activities and declare the Service as enemies of press freedom,” he cautioned.

He also expressed concern over the rising number of attacks on journalists in Ghana.

“Ghana typically records around 12 attacks annually, but in just the first seven months of 2025, we’ve already hit that number. This trend is alarming and unacceptable. Journalists are key pillars of democracy, and any attack on them is an attack on our collective freedom,” Mr. Dwumfuor added.

Ablekuma North rerun: Journalist injured after policeman’s hot slap [Watch] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-journalist-injured-after-policemans-hot-slap-watch/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 10:30:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554149 A police inspector whose name is currently unknown has allegedly slapped a journalist with Accra-based GHOne TV, Banahene Agyekum, in the ongoing Ablekuma North rerun.

Mr. Agyekum was reporting at the Church of Pentecost polling station in Odorkor.

Recounting his experience during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the journalist shared that he was performing his regular duties when a police inspector suddenly instructed him to vacate the premises.

He explained that several journalists were in the same area; hence, he was surprised as to why he was singled out by the officer.

“I even showed him my ID card to prove that I am a journalist, justifying why I can’t leave when he slapped me,” he stated.

A widely circulated video released by Accra-based Original TV shows the visibly agitated police officer in action, with efforts by his fellow officers to de-escalate the situation proving unsuccessful.

Adom News’ Shine Acquah, who was at the polling station, confirmed that Agyekum had sustained a severe injury to his face.

As of now, Banahene is yet to file an official complaint.
