It all ensued during an interview on Complex about his new album ‘segwayed’ into a pop quiz over his ability to identify the different types of delicacies Africa has to offer.

The dish on the chopping board was ‘Jollof’.

It is a rice-based dish from West Africa typically made with tomatoes, onions, spices, and vegetables among other accompaniments.

While Burna Boy successfully identified Nigerian and Senegalese jollof rice, his confidence wavered when he encountered what he considered to be subpar jollof.

Although he mistook the origin of the third plate, suggesting it might be from Kenya, he wasn’t entirely off the mark in terms of the quality assessment.

Unfortunately for Burna Boy, his guess was incorrect, and he was informed that the jollof rice he deemed less flavorful actually hailed from Ghana.

He was visibly surprised claiming that his experiences with Ghana’s jollof were very different as this particular plate did not meet that standard.

“Ghana jollof is way better than this even if Ghana jollof is bottom of my list, it is a lot better than this. The real Ghana jollof is a lot better than this,” he insisted.

Oko Vanderpuije wins jollof competition https://www.adomonline.com/oko-vanderpuije-wins-jollof-competition/ Mon, 18 Sep 2017 06:15:18 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=501541 Ghanaian politician and former Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, is not only a respectable figure in the area of making laws but also a man of reputation in the kitchen.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South, who lost his wife in 2012, last week proved that cooking is no child’s play and also not exclusive to women, as he beat his daughter to win a jollof cooking contest on national TV.

He won the contest at a time there is an unending argument over which West African country prepares the best jollof.

There has always been a debate as to which West African country makes the best jollof, with Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Gambia being the main contenders.

Event organisers, on different occasions, staged different events to somehow settle the argument, but there hasn’t been a clear winner. No particular country has dominated the winning positions at those events.

But Mr Oko Vanderpuije appears to be dominating among his pals, as he becomes the first Ghanaian MP to showcase his jollof cooking prowess on TV.

He was on the cooking show, Dinning With, hosted by celebrated actress Yvonne Okoro on GHone TV, with his daughter Mildred Vanderpuije to display their expertise in preparing the popular cuisine.

He prepared his jollof with vegetables and other ingredients, making his jollof tastier than that of the daughter, who was very sure of winning the cooking contest from the onset.

But at the end of the show, Mr Oko Vanderpuije was adjudged the winner by two tasters who joined the show after the cooking.

They tasted two plates of jollof without knowing who prepared what. Their judgment was that Mr Oko Vanderpuije’s jollof tasted better than that of the daughter, and eventually he became the winner.

“I told you guys I’m a good cook,” he said on the show. But the daughter wouldn’t accept that she was defeated by the father, as she insisted her food tasted better.

Gambia beats Ghana, Nigeria in jollof rice competition https://www.adomonline.com/gambia-beats-ghana-nigeria-jollof-rice-competition/ Mon, 28 Aug 2017 06:42:40 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=437141 Gambia has been adjudged the winner of the Jollof Rice Competition organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) as part of activities marking the Jollof Festival at the weekend.
The competition, which featured Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria and Senegal, formed part of the “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, and Feel Ghana” campaign being championed by the GTA, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts to promote local tourism on a global scale.
Gambia prepared the jollof rice without tomatoes but with mustard, fish and other ingredients, making their jollof yellowish-white as compared to Ghana, who used tilapia, tomatoes and other ingredients to make their jollof attractive and tasty, giving it a reddish colour.
The Nigerian and Senegalese chefs used ingredients they believed could make their jollof super and delicious but, unfortunately, they could not win.
The judges, who were drawn from Mexico and the Netherlands, said the judgment was based on criteria including presentation, aroma, and taste.
Mr Jan van der Veer, the lead Judge, told the GNA that the Gambians had “a fine presentation and a better taste for their jollof as compared to that of Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal.”
He lauded the Tourism Ministry and the GTA for the innovative event adding that it was a great avenue to sell Ghana to the world.
The event was characterised by live-band music from the Ghana Immigration Service Band and the iconic Ghanaian female highlife Artiste, Akosua Agyapong.

Ms Felicia Aniagyei, the Acting Public Relations Manager of the GTA, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the Jollof Competition, which falls under the “Eat Ghana” module, was to encourage Ghanaians to be proud of their local dishes and patronise them wherever they went.
She said the occasion was also used to showcase some locally made cuisines including Kenkey with fish and rice balls with groundnut soup.
This month has been dedicated to the “Eat Ghana” module while next month, September, would be for the “Wear Ghana” module, followed by the “Feel Ghana” in October.
Ms Aniagyei noted that engaging other African countries in the competition was to help showcase the varieties of jollof rice and deepen the relationship among the participating countries.
Some of the jollof prepared at the event included; Kontomire black eye bean Jollof, Smoked Tuna and Vegetable Jollof, Beef Jollof and Egg plant koobi Jollof.
Mr Lucky George, the Publisher of African Travel Times Magazine, said jollof rice originated from the Sene Gambia in the 19th Century before they separated to become two different countries.
There was also Chief Executive Officers’ (CEOs) challenge in the jollof rice competition, out of which Mr Seth Ocran, the CEO of Yorks Car Rentals, emerged the winner over Abeiku Santana of Kaya Travel and Tours and Mr Akwasi Agyemang of the GTA.

PHOTOS: Nigeria wins first ever jollof festival in Washington DC https://www.adomonline.com/photos-nigeria-wins-first-ever-jollof-festival-washington-dc/ Fri, 07 Jul 2017 07:20:48 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=276231 On July 2, 2017, Ms. Atinuke Ogunsalu of Queensway Restaurant & Catering in Maryland, US, became the winner of the first ever Jollof Hackathon presented by I/O Spaces during Jollof Festival In Washington DC. The event was organized by Afropolitan Insights.
Ms. Ogunsalu put skeptics to shame with her win and proved to all that Nigerians can indeed cook Jollof when she secured her country the win at the event. Her competitors at the event were Cameroon, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. Jollof is cooked in a single pot with rice and a tomato-based stew plus preferred meat, fish or poultry. It is very popular the world over especially among West Africans.
The winning chef arrived at the event venue; 1630 19th Street in North West of Washington DC, with high hopes despite heavy opposition fueled by the popular assertion at that Nigeria Jollof, was indeed nothing to write home about.
A good number of the over 600 people that attended the #JollofFestival had high expectations of team Ghana Jollof to win, unfortunately, Ghana sold out due quickly of food, though they had called for backup it never arrived on time so they were beaten by the clock.
According to Lucinda Mensah a Ghanaian Jollof enthusiast that TheAfricanDream.net spoke with said “there was no Ghana jollof to taste when it was time to judge as we sold all since people were buying it like crazy. If Ghana had just one teaspoonful of jollof for the judges to taste we could have easily won. I noticed the Nigerians had a truckload of their jollof on deck, they came to battle and won fair and square.”
When it was time to make their final presentations to the judges it was only Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria that were left standing.
Four-time ‘Embassy Chef Challenge’ participant and executive chef at the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC — Chef Francis Otoo — was joined by Gigi Ness of African Cuisine Inc, Tamara Raye of NATIVSOL, Maame Boakye of Dine Diaspora and Jamaican Andrea Coleman, (a) Jollof enthusiast, on the panel of judges to adjudge and announce the winner.
Each finalist was given five minutes to present their dish to the judges who based their decisions on participants’ presentation, taste, and originality.
According to Chef Otoo whose opinion was shared by the other judges, Ms. Ogunsalu did not only “capture a great taste and healthy combination of ingredients in her meal, she did an awesome job at presentation and that was something very pleasing to the tongues and eyes of the judges” he told TheAfricanDream.net a media partner of the event.
Newly crowned #JollofFestival champion Ms. Ogunsalu told TheAfricanDream.net that she was glad to have carried the day for Nigeria, and felt that people can now actually jump off the fence and try Nigerian Jollof for themselves instead of being prejudiced.
The winner walked away with $1000 coworking services from event partner I/O Spaces and an opportunity to become a Chef at Jollof Caviar; an upscale African Fusion Restaurant Opening in Washington DC in 2019.
Ishmael Osekre, the Ghanaian-born, New York-based founder of Afropolitan Insights, creators of the festival in an interview with TheAfricanDream.net said he was very touched by the attendance and welcoming spirit received from participants, vendors, and the city of Washington DC, adding “thanks to all your efforts we have set a great tone for #JollofFestival and we only look forward to building on it as we popularize the togetherness the meal brings here in the United States.”
Afropolitan Insights is a collective of young Africans, African-Americans, and Caribbeans from Africa and in the Diaspora who curate events, create spaces for cultural exchange and social dialogue, celebrate diversity, innovation and ideas.
The Jollof wars will continue at the Jollof Festival NYC on July 23rd where organizers are determined to ensure all competitors participate in the competitions. To find out more about the premier Jollof Festival follow the #JollofFestival hashtag online or on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook as @JollofFestival.

VIDEO: I love Nigerian Jollof, but Ghanaian Jollof is “bad” – Wizkid https://www.adomonline.com/video-love-nigerian-jollof-ghanaian-jollof-bad-wizkid/ Wed, 24 May 2017 08:11:46 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=134231 Nigerian Afrobeats star, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun known in showbiz circles as Wizkid is the latest artiste to wade into the Ghana/Nigerian best Jollof battle.

Wizkid, 26, said although he loves Nigerian Jollof, Ghanaian Jollof is “bad.”

“I love Nigerian Jollof 100 percent, but when I go to New York or I am in Ghana, my friend’s wife makes this crazy Ghana Jollof with some goat meat…it is bad!” he told Ace in a recent BBC Radio 1Xtra interview in London.

Wizkid described Ghana as his second home and disclosed he has a property in Ghana.

The boy from Surlele who started singing some 15 years ago said his experiences are now beginning to count for his musical journey ahead.

“I have not done anything yet, I am only starting…and I am here to make music forever,” he said.

According to the Ojuelegba singer, he dreams of having a show where people of different races will come together to celebrate their togetherness and have fun.

He said he is ready to work with other musicians when he is available for collaboration especially to help push upcoming musicians.

Wizkid said that his collaboration with Drake happened “because every smart artiste should know you need to collaborate.”

He disagreed with criticisms that Drake takes advantage of other musicians who are hot on the scene and collaborate with them to ride on their popularity.

To the critics, he said the ‘One Dance’ hitmaker “Drake is only a true artiste,” that is the reason for his numerous collaborations.

Wizkids who describes his time in the studio and on stage as his only “my moments” added that some of the songs on his new album are two years old but assured they are classics.

He said there are collaborations with Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Mustard, Legendury beats, among others on his new album and fans should watch out.

The final judgement: Ghanaian jollof VS Nigerian jollof https://www.adomonline.com/final-judgement-ghanaian-jollof-vs-nigerian-jollof/ Thu, 18 May 2017 16:38:35 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=126021 A never ending argument, a battle of two passionate cultures or a matter of taste and preferences. Call it whatever. The age old debate between Ghanaians and Nigerians about their respective ‘’jollof’’ has to come to an end at some point. Although there is no ‘’jollofmeter’’ to measure the quality or otherwise of each, we can conclude this long fought battle for supremacy by taking the respective meals through these few parameters.

  1. What is Jollof? – Legend has it that the Wolof people of Senegal invented this meal presumably because of it’s name. It is made with rice, tomatoes, tomato paste sometimes with spices and vegetables. It is accompanied by either meat, chicken, fish or eggs. Some even go the extra mile of adding ‘’cole slaw’’. But if it’s original name was ‘’Wolof’’, can Ghanaians and Nigerians stop the battle now and explain to us why the name ‘’Jollof’’? Well, now that we have identified what it is, let’s put both of them on the table. Which qualifies as jollof and which doesn’t? Per the method of preparation, ingredients and final outcome (devoid of taste however), we can confidently say that, both Ghanaian and Nigerian jollofs pass this test. Score after round 1: Ghana 1-1 Nigeria.

2. Taste : On to round 2. This is the most difficult parameter to have used thus far with taste being a subjective parameter depending on individuals. There is no way a ‘’Ghanaba’’ who has lived in Ghana since birth or a proper ‘’Omo Naija’’ will accept that the opposite country’s jollof is better than theirs. If you are used to eating one type of jollof always, then briefly tasting another will hardly cause a change in your preference. It is easy to fall victim to that school of thought which suggests that a neutral person tastes both and passes judgement. But with so many years of this practice, we seemed not to be going anywhere. Many tourists visit both Ghana and Nigeria tasting both ‘’Jollofs’’. In the end, when you ask which tastes better, you may not like what you hear. When in Accra, in order to avoid Ghanaian trouble, they choose Ghana jollof. When in Lagos, you dare not choose another. After interactions with a Ghanaian , Yaw Baah – who has lived in both Ghana and Nigeria tasting both meals, the findings were that he preferred Ghanaian jollof because it is often less spicy and the type of rice often used is perfumed long grain. On the other hand, Nigerian Jollof to him was very spicy and the grains were very big. The taste to him wasn’t that different but the moisture content of the Nigerian jollof was higher making it sticky. In order to avoid bias, we had a chat with a Nigerian lady as well who has lived in both countries and has tasted both meals. Expectedly, she chose Nigerian jollof over the Ghana one because she thinks Nigerian is more nutritious and gets one full as compared to the ‘’light’’ Ghana jollof. Their assertions may not reflect what the whole Ghana and Nigeria think but based on their submissions, we score this round Ghana 1 – 2 Nigeria.

3. Garnishing : So you may be wondering what garnishing has to do with any of this. The appearance of jollof can either make you fall in love or lose appetite depending on which end of the table you sit. WIthout fear or favor, when both meals are served on a table, even Nigerians want to eat Ghana Jollof. The glow and spark that accompanies garnished Ghanaian jollof can make you half full even before you begin to taste it. Some Nigerians have mastered the art of garnishing in recent years and present stiff competition for their Ghanaian counterparts. However, this round belongs to Ghana and round 3 ends Ghana 2-1 Nigeria.

And yes! There is absolutely nothing to pick between these two. Ghana Jollof is Ghana Jollof and Ghanaians love it just the same way Naija Jollof is Naija jollof and Nigerians adore it. When jollof is carefully prepared, noting the right ingredients and properly garnished, it doesn’t even matter whether it is Ghanaian or Nigerian. Just dive in and kill it! Just note that the social media polls and boastings have no bearing on the taste of jollof you decide to eat. If you are a tourist in Africa, just ensure to consult local folk before deciding on any type of jollof to eat. They know where the best food is.

‘’So whether na Ghana jollof or Naija jollof, na your own mouth go make sweet you’’.!!!
