This high-level visit represents an affirmation of Ghana’s strategic orientation toward the East, in recognition of the accelerating global shift in economic gravity and development cooperation toward Asia, particularly China.

I am a Ghanaian residing and working in China. Over the past few decades, I have witnessed a significant portion of China’s remarkable economic transformation.

I attended the Presidential Business Forum with my Chinese business partner, a national event that brought together Ghanaians living in China, alongside numerous Chinese business representatives. The forum was well attended by both Ghanaian entrepreneurs and their Chinese counterparts.

The optimism and opportunities that such a platform fosters between the two nations are truly commendable. We extend our appreciation to President Mahama for this visionary initiative.

The Presidential Forum took place at a time when the international community continues to navigate the aftermath of the post–COVID-19 economic recession.

President Mahama’s visit stands as a timely and visionary manoeuvre. It demonstrates Ghana’s resolve to reposition itself within a global framework increasingly defined by new alliances, mutual economic interdependence, and South–South collaboration.

Domestically, the visit comes on the heels of President Mahama’s resounding re-election victory and the formation of his “Reset Government”—a governance framework imbued with renewed optimism and anchored on the aspirations of the Ghanaian people.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s overwhelming parliamentary majority has provided the President with the political latitude to implement his transformative agenda with decisiveness.

Yet, this mandate also comes with a profound responsibility—to translate political capital into tangible socio-economic outcomes for the citizenry.

At the core of the Presidential Business Forum in Beijing lie seven thematic policy pillars:

Economic revitalisation and stimulus,

Agricultural modernisation through mechanisation,

Job creation and employment accessibility,

Promotion of trade and international commerce,

Advancement of green energy, industrialisation, and infrastructural transformation, encapsulated in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto as “The Big Push.”

President Mahama’s engagement with China, therefore, is not incidental—it is a deliberate, strategic initiative aimed at leveraging China’s developmental experience, industrial might, and technological prowess to accelerate Ghana’s own modernisation process.

The Economic and Diplomatic Implications

During the Presidential Economic Forum hosted by the Ghanaian Embassy in Beijing, President Mahama articulated his vision of an economically transformed Ghana—a nation where prosperity is equitably distributed and development reaches even the most marginalised communities.

The highlight of the visit was the signing of a bilateral trade agreement with President Xi Jinping, introducing a zero-tariff regime for Ghanaian exports to China. This landmark accord effectively opens the gates of the vast Chinese market to 100% of Ghanaian exportable goods, offering immense potential for value addition and foreign exchange earnings.

This initiative signals the dawn of a new export era for Made-in-Ghana products—ranging from cocoa derivatives such as chocolate and coffee to shea butter, tropical fruits (avocado, oranges, guava, bananas), and authentic Ghanaian textiles and handicrafts.

The Chinese market’s vast consumer base presents a unique opportunity for Ghanaian entrepreneurs to globalise their operations and elevate national pride in locally produced goods. This could serve as a catalyst for sustained export growth, foreign revenue generation, and domestic employment expansion.

Agriculture and Mechanisation: Lessons from China

A central theme in President Mahama’s economic diplomacy is the modernisation of Ghana’s agricultural sector. Drawing inspiration from China’s remarkable transformation in food security and mechanised agriculture, Ghana aims to reposition agriculture as a driver of national prosperity.

With its expansive arable land and favourable climate, Ghana possesses untapped potential to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency and even become a net exporter of food products.

President Mahama’s call for foreign and domestic investment in agro-industrial ventures—spanning crop cultivation, aquaculture, and livestock farming—underscores his recognition that agriculture is both an economic and social stabiliser.

Through mechanisation, innovation, and value-chain integration, Ghanaian farmers can emulate China’s model of large-scale productivity, thereby reducing dependence on food imports and mitigating inflationary pressures linked to external shocks.

Employment, Industrialisation, and Skills Development

The ripple effects of agricultural modernisation extend directly to job creation, particularly for Ghana’s burgeoning youth population.

By reconceptualising employment beyond the confines of white-collar work, President Mahama advocates for a new paradigm that celebrates vocational and technical skills as vital engines of national productivity.

Industrialisation—rooted in skilled labour and technology transfer—is a key pillar of this transformative vision. China’s meteoric industrial ascent offers invaluable lessons in how a developing nation can harness disciplined human capital, state-led planning, and private-sector dynamism to achieve inclusive growth.

Ghana must, therefore, invest substantially in technical education, apprenticeships, and innovation ecosystems to bridge the skills gap and empower its workforce for a rapidly evolving industrial landscape.

Green Energy and Environmental Stewardship

Equally significant is Ghana’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. As global concerns about climate change and resource depletion intensify, Ghana must align with international best practices in renewable energy, ecological preservation, and responsible mining. President Mahama’s renewed emphasis on green energy initiatives reaffirms Ghana’s dedication to a cleaner, more resilient economy.

This commitment demands not only technological adaptation but also civic responsibility. Ghanaians must embrace a culture of environmental stewardship, safeguarding national resources from exploitative practices while ensuring that foreign investments operate within the parameters of sustainability and national interest.

Conclusion: A Renewed Vision for Ghana’s Future

In summation, President Mahama’s state visit to China is emblematic of a new chapter in Ghana’s developmental trajectory—a chapter defined by pragmatic diplomacy, economic inclusivity, and visionary leadership.

The visit encapsulates the government’s unwavering determination to revitalise Ghana’s economy through agro-industrial expansion, export diversification, and strategic integration into the global economy, with China as a principal partner.

As President Mahama eloquently declared, “Ghana is open for business.” The success of this national renaissance, however, depends on the collective resolve of all Ghanaians—entrepreneurs, workers, policymakers, and citizens alike—to transform optimism into action, and vision into reality.

As the Government of Ghana continues to open the country for business, the state must develop the institutional capacity necessary to safeguard local enterprises and to curb unchecked exploitation by foreign expatriates and corporations.

Furthermore, Ghana’s national interests must be protected to prevent undue influence or abuse by foreign entities.

Ayekoo, President Mahama! Long live Ghana–China friendship! Long live the Republic of Ghana.

President Mahama urges Black Stars to make history at 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/president-mahama-urges-black-stars-to-make-history-at-2026-world-cup/ Mon, 13 Oct 2025 14:30:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587919 President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Black Stars to aim for historic success after securing their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana’s senior national team booked their spot in the Mundial with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium, courtesy of a decisive goal from Mohammed Kudus.

Reflecting on past heartbreak, Mahama recalled the nation’s 2010 World Cup quarterfinal exit, when Asamoah Gyan’s missed late penalty denied Ghana a place in the semi-finals.

He also cited Morocco’s trailblazing 2022 campaign, in which the North African side became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals, as inspiration for the Black Stars.

“We must follow in the footsteps of Morocco by going beyond the semi-finals and, who knows, with fingers crossed, bring the World Cup trophy home to make Ghana and Africa proud,” Mahama told Sporty FM.

He urged all Ghanaians to unite behind the team.

“We must all rally behind the Black Stars. We must support them to the hilt. Let’s not bring in any partisan or ethnic considerations. Let’s give them our full support,” he added.

The Black Stars will discover their group-stage opponents during the World Cup draw on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Following a group-stage exit at their previous World Cup in Qatar, Ghana now hopes to make a lasting impact in the 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

President Mahama announces plans to construct seven new stadia in 2026 https://www.adomonline.com/president-mahama-announces-plans-to-construct-seven-new-stadia-in-2026/ Sun, 21 Sep 2025 01:22:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580855 President John Mahama has revealed plans for the construction of seven new stadia across Ghana in 2026, as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and raise the standard of domestic football.

The President made the announcement on Saturday during a meeting at the Jubilee House with officials of Bibiani GoldStars and Asante Kotoko, who are currently representing Ghana in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

“The Finance Minister is going to present the budget in November, and I was telling the Sports Minister and Director-General of the National Sports Authority that next year we are going to build about seven brand new stadia,” Mahama said.

“We want every region to have a stadium fit for purpose so that we can improve playing conditions and make our football more competitive.”

Ghana’s lack of modern sports facilities has long been a concern. The Accra Sports Stadium remains the only venue meeting international requirements, serving as the home ground for both GoldStars and Kotoko in their continental campaigns, as well as recent Black Stars matches.

Other venues, including the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale, and the Sekondi Essipong Stadium, refurbished for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, have since deteriorated, with Essipong described as being in the most dire condition.

The Cape Coast Stadium, commissioned in 2016, has also seen a significant decline in recent years.

Enimil Ashon: Mahama, remember Akufo Addo’s cane https://www.adomonline.com/enimil-ashon-mahama-remember-akufo-addos-cane/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 10:37:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580517 The cane that was used to lash Takyi will inevitably be used on Baah, so say the Akan of Ghana. President Mahama knows this proverb very well; he used it in one of his addresses earlier in the year.

In the 2016 elections, the difference between Akufo-Addo and his closest contender was 1,984,630 votes. Then his reign began. Such goodwill by the people! Even the traders at Aborsey Okai voluntarily reduced prices.

Then started the little-little slips. At the end of his first term, Ghanaians voted to tell him that they were not terribly impressed with his performance.

When the votes were tallied in the 2020 election, the gap between Akufo-Addo and the first runner-up had narrowed to only 517,405 votes – one million people had decided to vote against him.

Other “sins” followed, which Ghanaians could not forgive, and in the 2024 elections, Akufo-Addo was trailing by a whopping 1,714,089 votes.

One of his unforgivable sins was the fight against galamsey.

Then came Mahama. Between January 2025, when he assumed the reins of government, and August 2025, he was on cloud nine.

The economy was working perfectly: the cedi’s performance against the dollar, rising from GH¢17.4 to GH¢10.4, was magical; fuel prices dropped to as low as GH¢12; GDP rose from US$75bilion to over US$130 billion, and inflation was down from 23% to 13%; Ghana’s debt burden reduced by GH¢150 billion; emission tax and E-levy were gone.

Ghanaians applauded.

But, come mid-August, and since then, the cedi’s strength has weakened, affecting fuel prices. The OMCs are putting it down to the exchange rate.

Nonetheless, because of visionary projects like Big Push, Goldbod and all of the above indicators, Mahama’s goodwill is still intact, to a large extent. Ghanaians seem to simply love Mahama’s personality and are willing to give him a chance to prove that the downward slide is temporary.

Nine months after he swept to power, however, the people are beginning to taste a “small” sourness in their mouths. All because of Galamsey and the President’s answer to the media’s question to him about the declaration of a State of Emergency.

As a government in Ghana, when you have the Catholic Bishops Conference, the Christian Council, CDD, medical professionals and other civil society groups ganging up against a major policy, the warning to any President is: “Beware!” Our ancestors said that one small load on top of another small load soon becomes an unbearable burden.

Galamsey is one load too heavy to bear.

Our water bodies have been poisoned by mining pollutants such as cyanide and mercury. Babies are being born deformed. Water shortages have become so severe that women and schoolchildren are walking five kilometres in search of water at prices that are best left to the imagination.

The last straw is the shutdown of the Kwanyako headworks of GWCL. Heavy siltation of the Ayensu River has caused this tragedy. As of Tuesday, 11 districts in the region do not have water. It’s Galamsey.

Soundbites from towns and villages in Central and Western Regions are harrowing, bordering on the apocalyptic.

Rather than act and act decisively, Ghanaians are doing what we are best known for: talking. The talkers are making excuses for the murderers, while the arguments are along party lines.

The havoc which illegal artisanal mining is wreaking has not been for lack of warnings. Dr Joseph Ampofo, former Director of the Water Research Institute of the CSIR, and Professor Rosemary Mamaa Entsua Mensah, a fishery scientist and aquatic ecologist, are “Galamsey prophets”.

Many, many years ago, long before galamsey assumed the proportions of an existential threat, Professor Entsua Mensah had foreseen, researched into and forewarned that life in Ghana could come to a stop if nothing was done to stop the threat that mining, in general, and galamsey, in particular, posed to our water bodies.

As far back as 2015, Dr Ampofo granted me an interview in which he warned: “A time is coming – and it looks like sooner than we had anticipated – when Ghanaians shall see water but we cannot use it. It is so serious that the water cannot even be used to water seedlings in nurseries!

That is why President Mahama cannot continue to dilly-dally about the call for a declaration of a State of Emergency.

The galamseyers are armed to the teeth, meaning they have declared war. They shoot to kill. To poison a people’s water source amounts to a declaration of war. They are committing mass murder.

Every government in Ghana in the Fourth Republic has declared “war on Galamsey”, but I beg to submit that wars are not fought with resolutions, arrests and threats.

Wars can only be fought with bullets that kill, and the only condition under which shoot-to-kill is permissible is in a state of emergency imposed on guilty communities.

Over to you, President Mahama. Ghanaians did it to Takyi (Akufo-Addo). They will do it to the NDC if….

Kwabena Agyepong urges Mahama to promote local football https://www.adomonline.com/kwabena-agyepong-urges-mahama-to-promote-local-football/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 11:03:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579499 Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has urged President John Mahama to make a deliberate effort to promote local football in Ghana.

Speaking to Luv FM, the former broadcaster expressed disappointment over the poor media coverage and limited attention given to the Ghana Premier League, stressing that it requires urgent government support for revival.

“I’m so disappointed that the local league, whether it is you, the media, we are not giving it enough coverage or ventilation. People don’t even know when there’s a game going on. There’s something wrong with our local football, and I think the government or the president should be deliberate about it. We should all work hard towards rebuilding it, and then there’s a lot of competition because of DSTV and now the access to international football,” Agyepong said.

He noted that international football broadcasts pose stiff competition to the local league, making it difficult to attract spectators.

“When you are giving a fan a choice, paying GHS2 or GHS3 to go and watch DSTV, and then having to attend a match at the stadium, which is attained at cost, it’s a very difficult choice, so there’s a lot of pressure. But as Ghanaians, we should be deliberate about it,” he added.

Speaking at his first media encounter on Wednesday, September 10, the President said the initial phase of the initiative will focus heavily on road infrastructure, which he noted has deteriorated sharply over the past eight years.

According to him, nearly GH¢14 billion from Ghana’s oil and gold revenues has been earmarked this year to finance the programme.

Critical road projects such as the Ofankor and Sawambu roads, long stalled due to underfunding, have now been absorbed into the ‘Big Push’ framework.

He disclosed that close to GH¢1 billion has already been released to ensure the rapid completion of these projects by the end of the second quarter of 2025.

“The ‘Big Push programme’ is about transforming Ghana’s infrastructure base, starting with the road sector, to boost economic activity and improve the lives of our people,” Mahama said.

We’ll sack Mahama if he seeks re-election – Movement for Change warns https://www.adomonline.com/well-sack-mahama-if-he-seeks-re-election-movement-for-change-warns/ Mon, 01 Sep 2025 08:17:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573392 A member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has cautioned former President John Mahama against making a U-turn on his earlier declaration not to seek re-election.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Insight, Mr. Owusu warned that any attempt by Mahama to contest again would face strong resistance from both Ghanaians and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“If President Mahama goes for a second tenure of office, we will sack him,” he stated, insisting that leaders must remain true to their word.

According to him, several NDC members are eager to lead and would resist any attempt by Mahama to break his promise, stressing that such a move could undermine public trust and divide the party.

He urged Mahama to focus on delivering on his campaign pledges in his remaining three years rather than contemplating another run.

“He has to use the three years to do anything he wants to do before he exhausts his time,” he said, adding that the former president’s credibility rests on keeping faith with Ghanaians.

Mr. Owusu further argued that pursuing another term would stifle fresh ideas and hinder national progress. He called for younger leaders to be given the opportunity to serve.

“He should exit and let fresh blood come and perform as well,” he emphasised.

On governance reforms, he proposed that presidential term limits be reinforced, noting that even the most effective leaders should be restricted to two terms.

“Even if you are the best president, there must be a policy of just two terms of office,” he said.

He also described Mahama’s earlier public declaration not to contest again as unnecessary, since the constitution already limits presidents to two terms.

“It was needless for the president to come out and say he won’t be running, because it is already written in the constitution,” he remarked.

Mr. Owusu urged Ghanaians not to support any future bid by Mahama, stressing that two terms are sufficient for any leader to make an impact.

Turning to the upcoming by-election, he criticised the rising tension between the NPP and NDC, saying politics should be about policies, not violence.

“Sometimes, an election is not about winning but letting people understand your policies,” he noted.

He urged politicians to shun electoral violence, emphasising that effective leaders should not fear defeat.

“If you know your policies are good, there is no need to shed blood. As an MP, if you did your duties and responsibilities well during your tenure of office, you shouldn’t be scared,” he said.

Mr. Owusu concluded by urging Mahama to concentrate on fulfilling his promises to Ghanaians, arguing that doing so would strengthen public trust and justify the mandate given to him.

“Ghana must succeed for West Africa and Africa to succeed,” President Tharman said, commending President Mahama’s handling of the country’s debt challenge and noting that jobs remain a hurdle that his administration is actively addressing.

Speaking during bilateral talks in Singapore, President Tharman said Mahama’s address at the Africa Singapore Business Forum reflects the strength and promise of bilateral ties and underscores the need for sustainable development as a foundation for long-term prosperity.

He highlighted a milestone in climate collaboration, noting that Singapore is the first Asian country to sign an implementation agreement on carbon credits with Ghana, while Ghana is the first African country to sign such an agreement with Singapore.

Looking ahead, President Tharman outlined priority areas for expanded cooperation, including agribusiness and the downstream processing of products such as cashew and cocoa, as well as fintech and payment systems, cross-border payments, and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.

“We are ready and glad to pursue these opportunities together,” he added, signalling Singapore’s intent to partner with Ghana in mobilising investment, technology, and skills to drive inclusive growth.

President John Mahama is on a three-day State Visit to the Asian city-state and will address a Presidential Business Forum on the last day of his visit.

The fallen servicemen—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—were among eight people who lost their lives in the crash.

President John Dramani Mahama honoured them with promotions: Squadron Leader Anala to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Twum-Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Mensah to Flight Sergeant.

Addressing the Grand Durbar Homecoming and Handing-Over Ceremony of the Asante Students Union at the University of Ghana on Sunday, August 17, 2025, Afenyo-Markin stressed that the ultimate tribute to the fallen heroes is to win the fight against galamsey.

“Posthumous honours, while deserving, do not finish what they started. These eight died in an effort to fight galamsey. Their sacrifices demand that we finally win this battle,” he said.

He urged the Mahama administration to act “with fierce urgency,” warning that every delay or compromise with illegal miners undermines the memory of those who paid the ultimate price.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday during a courtesy call by the Black Queens—who recently clinched bronze at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)—Mahama emphasized the importance of integrating sports development into the national education system.

“We are going to equip some schools around the country as sports schools. We will provide them with the necessary infrastructure,” he stated.

“We will assemble the best talents from the schools so they can train and study at the same time, developing their abilities to eventually join the senior teams.”

The initiative is expected to offer a structured pathway for young athletes, enabling them to pursue academic goals while receiving high-level sports training.

The Black Queens’ visit followed their impressive campaign at WAFCON 2024, where they secured Ghana’s first medal at the tournament since 2016 with a hard-fought third-place finish.

His directive follows a visit by the Black Queens to the Jubilee House on Tuesday after their bronze-winning performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking Ghana’s first WAFCON medal since 2016.

Speaking to the team and officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), President Mahama emphasized the importance of creating more pathways for young athletes to develop and contribute to the national cause.

“I have asked the Minister for the Interior to give priority to sportspeople when we do recruitment into the security services. In the past, when we brought sportspeople into the services, it gave them the opportunity, equipment, and facilities to train and improve themselves.”

He also called for the revival of the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games to identify and nurture fresh talent.

“We must reintroduce the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games and let the security services compete amongst themselves, and then Kurt [GFA President] and co. will be standing there, watching and picking the talents and forming the national teams.”

The President’s comments were part of broader praise for the Black Queens’ achievement, which signals a promising return to form for women’s football in Ghana.

Six months is long enough for Mahama to fight galamsey – Tony Aidoo https://www.adomonline.com/six-months-is-long-enough-for-mahama-to-fight-galamsey-tony-aidoo/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 12:36:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556560 Former Senior Presidential Aide and National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Dr. Tony Aidoo, has warned President John Mahama to decisively deal with illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, within the next six months or risk losing the 2028 elections.

He said the continued presence of galamsey poses a serious threat to the environment and public health, noting that contaminated water and food are slowly killing Ghanaians.

“If you are drinking water, you are scared. The food you eat, you are scared whether it is contaminated by metals,” he said on Joy News, adding that fear and insecurity have gripped many communities.

Dr. Aidoo criticised the previous Akufo-Addo-led government for its failure to resolve the crisis, cautioning Mahama not to repeat that mistake.

“Akufo-Addo didn’t care, so don’t say Ghanaians don’t care about your administration. If you don’t solve the galamsey problem, in 2028 Ghanaians will vote the NDC out,” he warned.

Dr. Aidoo also cited reports of a Municipal Chief Executive in the Ashanti Region allegedly involved in illegal mining, questioning President Mahama’s silence on the matter.

“So far, there is no response from this man. What is the President doing?” he asked.

While acknowledging initiatives like the Blue Water Project and making the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (Gold Board) the sole legal gold buyer, Dr. Aidoo said these policies are inadequate without eradicating illegal mining itself.

“Stop the galamsey, stop the damage to our waters and forests. Programs will fail if illegal mining continues unchecked,” he said.

He called for the deployment of military force to clamp down on illegal miners.

“Bring 1,000 men, two battalions, and fetch them out. If necessary, shoot to kill because they are killing us,” he asserted, describing the menace as an assault on Ghana’s territorial integrity.

Although Dr. Aidoo rated the Mahama-led government 70 percent overall, he downgraded it to 60 percent due to its weak fight against galamsey.

“Six months is long enough. Galamsey must be eliminated and uprooted from our society. It doesn’t matter who profits from it,” he concluded.

Mahama announces plans to build sports stadia in Ghana’s new regions https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-announces-plans-to-build-sports-stadia-in-ghanas-new-regions/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 09:47:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555879 Former President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to construct six state-of-the-art sports stadia across Ghana’s newly created regions.

Speaking during the Western North Region stop of his ‘Thank You Tour’ after securing re-election as President, Mr. Mahama revealed that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, led by Minister Kofi Adams, is currently overseeing the design phase of the stadium projects.

“Under the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, modern sports stadia will be built in the six newly created regions, as well as in other regions that currently lack such infrastructure,” he said while addressing a gathering of local leaders and residents.

The proposed initiative aims to promote equal access to quality sports infrastructure nationwide, with a particular focus on bridging developmental gaps in under-resourced regions.

Ghana’s six new regions — Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo — were created following a national referendum aimed at enhancing governance and accelerating local development. Their creation increased Ghana’s administrative regions from ten to sixteen.

Good news for road contractors https://www.adomonline.com/good-news-for-road-contractors/ Tue, 08 Jul 2025 11:05:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552688 President John Mahama has revealed that payments for outstanding debts owed to road contractors will begin this month.

The announcement was made during a meeting with members of the Council of State at Jubilee House on Monday, July 7.

According to the President, the Ministry of Finance has set aside funds specifically to clear a significant portion of these debts. This move is expected to enable contractors to return to stalled sites and resume work on critical infrastructure projects.

President Mahama emphasized that the Finance Minister is prioritizing these payments as part of the government’s broader strategy to accelerate project completion and support economic recovery.

Details about the payments and their overall impact will be outlined in the upcoming mid-year budget review, which will assess the economy’s performance in the first half of the year.

He also assured the Council of State that following the budget review presentation, the government will meet again with the council to discuss progress and performance.

Explainer: What’s inside Ghana’s 24-hour economy blueprint? https://www.adomonline.com/explainer-whats-inside-ghanas-24-hour-economy-blueprint/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 06:42:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550864 The NDC government has officially launched its flagship 24-hour economy policy, 176 days into its administration. The 283-page document not only outlines how the initiative will be implemented and funded but also signals a notable shift in focus.

Initially seen as a strategy to extend the working hours of public institutions and businesses, the policy has evolved into a broader economic transformation agenda aimed at addressing structural bottlenecks in Ghana’s economy.

Two-Phase Rollout

The policy will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase focuses on direct incentives to encourage businesses to operate longer hours, while the second addresses the deeper infrastructure and legal reforms needed to sustain a continuous production model.

Tax Breaks for Extended Operations

To encourage participation, the government is offering a comprehensive set of tax and regulatory incentives. Companies that sign up for the programme will enjoy:

  • Zero import duties on manufacturing equipment, renewable energy systems, raw materials, and logistics infrastructure.

  • Corporate tax exemptions for strategic agricultural sectors, including grains, vegetables, oilseeds, tubers, livestock, and sugar.

  • Corporate tax rebates of 25% for two-shift operations and 50% for companies running three shifts.

  • Targeted VAT exemptions to reduce the cost of locally manufactured goods.

  • Discounted electricity tariffs for firms operating between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

  • Export rebates ranging from 2% to 6% for exporters of manufactured goods.

  • Fast-tracked utility connections and regulatory clearances.

  • Access to low-interest credit from the Development Bank Ghana.

In the cocoa sector, local processors enrolled in the programme will receive easier access to raw cocoa beans.

While these measures are designed to boost production, create jobs, and grow exports, they will require legal amendments in Parliament related to taxation, trade, investment, and procurement.

Fixing Structural Bottlenecks

The second phase focuses on building large industrial parks—referred to as Wumbei Parks—in each region. Each park will span at least 50 acres and operate independently with renewable energy sources such as solar and biogas. Police and fire services will also be stationed onsite to ensure uninterrupted operations.

These parks will be strategically located near new agroecological zones along the Volta Basin, where integrated farming and agro-processing will be supported by irrigation systems from the Volta Lake.

The policy also outlines plans for urban farming clusters—including greenhouses—near major cities to cut food transport costs. Greenhouse farming will be prioritized in land-scarce communities.

The goal is to integrate production with logistics, reduce supply chain costs, and enable continuous economic activity day and night.

A $4 Billion Ambition

The policy is expected to cost $4 billion in its initial phase. The government has committed $300 million in seed capital, with the remaining 92% to be raised through public-private partnerships, led by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund.

To support funding, a 2.5% import levy will be introduced on selected goods that can be produced locally, including processed foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cement, plastic household goods, second-hand clothing, sanitary pads, and diapers.

The government expects that increased production will offset revenue losses from tax incentives, although the policy document does not provide specific figures to support this claim. It also projects the creation of over 1.7 million jobs within four years, but lacks detailed projections on export growth, tax revenue, or employment by sector.

Implementation and Oversight

To ensure effective rollout, the government plans to pass legislation establishing a 24-Hour Economy Authority, chaired by the president. A pilot programme involving 50 companies will also be launched.

However, the document offers few details on implementation timelines, project sequencing, or fiscal risks. This raises concerns, especially when viewed against the backdrop of past initiatives like the One District, One Factory (1D1F) programme. Despite spending over GH¢500 million by the end of 2023, only 169 companies had received support, and many structural challenges remained unresolved.

The key distinction with the 24-hour policy is its legislative backing, which could make it more resistant to reversal by future governments.

The Road Ahead

Ghana has unveiled one of its most ambitious industrial reforms in decades. The incentives are bold, and the structural vision is compelling. However, the absence of concrete numbers leaves critical questions unanswered.

How will the government address potential revenue shortfalls? Will it resort to borrowing? What safeguards exist to ensure policy continuity beyond the next election?

The success of the 24-hour economy will depend on private sector buy-in and the government’s ability to honour its promises without creating loopholes.

UNIMAC-IJ student urgently appeals to Mahama for footbridge at Dzorwulu campus  https://www.adomonline.com/unimac-ij-student-urgently-appeals-to-mahama-for-footbridge-at-dzorwulu-campus/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 07:41:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549522 Your Excellency John Dramani Mahama, listening President of the Republic of Ghana,
I write with deep concern on behalf of the students of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC -IJ), formerly the Ghana Institute of Journalism, particularly those at our new campus in Dzorwulu.

Your Excellency, every single day, students risk their lives crossing the busy N-1 highway to get to campus due to the absence of a footbridge.

This dangerous crossing puts hundreds of lives at stake, especially pregnant women, persons with physical challenges, and all students who must navigate multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic both before and after classes.

For instance, students commuting from Kasoa and nearby areas alight at the 335 bus stop and then dangerously cross the highway.

Similarly, those heading towards Accra Circle must cross the road near the Deloitte Office opposite Villaggio, another location with intense vehicular movement but no pedestrian safety measures.

The lack of a footbridge has turned our daily journey into a frightening ordeal. Many of us question why we must endanger our lives simply to pursue our education.

Your Excellency, we know you have always prioritized the well-being and future of Ghanaian youth.

We humbly and earnestly appeal to you to use your and your to help secure the construction of a safe, reliable footbridge near the UniMAC Dzorwulu campus.

I am not certain whether any prior communication has been made regarding this matter, but I firmly believe that Your Excellency’s intervention will not only help save lives, but also provide much-needed peace of mind to students, parents, and staff, knowing that their journey to and from school is safe.

Thank you for your kind attention and for your enduring commitment to the welfare of Ghana’s students.

Respectfully,
Jagri Boaz Binyinjom

RAG Chairman appeals to Mahama for intervention over unpaid referee allowances https://www.adomonline.com/rag-chairman-appeals-to-mahama-for-intervention-over-unpaid-referee-allowances/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 16:32:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549038 Chairman of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), George Saijah, has appealed to former President John Mahama to intervene in helping the association retrieve outstanding payments owed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

His appeal follows the conclusion of the 2024/25 football season, during which referees across various leagues remain unpaid for a significant number of match weeks.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Mr. Saijah disclosed that referees are owed allowances for 22 weeks.

According to him, officials in the Premier League, Division One, and the Women’s League have only received payments for 12 weeks out of a total of 34.

“We are calling on President Mahama and the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, to come to our aid. We can’t keep pre-financing games. We are suffering, and we need our money,” Saijah lamented.

He added, “The Referees Association of Ghana has served this nation with dedication, but the GFA has failed to clear its debt.”

Mr. Saijah also expressed concern over how the association has been treated under GFA President Kurt Okraku. He alleged that RAG has been sidelined in key decisions, including the appointment of match officials.

“We had a meeting with the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, and we complained to him about how RAG has suddenly been sidelined. We told him RAG cannot exist while a different body appoints referees to officiate matches, but he didn’t give us any positive feedback,” he stated.

Bawumia still has a chance in 2028 – Nana Akomea https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-still-has-a-chance-in-2028-nana-akomea/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 19:35:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547912 A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, says Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia still stands a strong chance of winning the 2028 presidential election despite the party’s defeat in 2024.

He drew a parallel with former President John Mahama, who returned as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer after losing power, suggesting that political comebacks are possible.

“Many presidents, including John Mahama, were rejected while in office but later returned to win power. So, Dr. Bawumia still has a chance to win the 2028 election,” he said.

Speaking during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Nana Akomea also cautioned against the use of hostile language during the party’s internal elections. He urged all aspirants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns with respect and decorum.

“During this election period, everyone is saying things that will persuade the delegates to vote for them, but is their argument true or not? The important thing is to be respectful in what you are saying,” he noted.

He further observed a political trend where Ghanaian presidents have historically handed over to their opponents, indicating the democratic maturity of the system.

“For the most part, since 2000, the president has handed over power to the person he defeated. Rawlings handed over to Kufuor, Kufuor handed over to President Mills, and the same happened with Akufo-Addo and Mahama,” he added.

Speaking at an orientation and training programme for MMDCEs held in Accra on Wednesday, July 18, the President emphasized the critical role of transparency and accountability in public office.

“I wish to remind you that you are among the officeholders required to declare your assets, and so I expect that by July 15, all of you will have complied,” he stated.

Under Article 286 of the Constitution, public officers are mandated to declare their assets before assuming office and upon leaving.

Since his return to office in January 2025, President Mahama has consistently advocated for asset declaration as a key tool in the fight against corruption and in strengthening public trust in government.

He noted that all his appointees have already complied with this constitutional obligation and warned that any MMDCE who fails to do so will face appropriate sanctions.

“Some appointees have already faced consequences for non-compliance,” he added.

Galamsey: ‘A betrayal of Ghana’s rivers’ – CDM blasts Mahama over inaction https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-a-betrayal-of-ghanas-rivers-cdm-blasts-mahama-over-inaction/ Wed, 21 May 2025 13:50:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536948 The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has issued a strong condemnation of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, accusing it of a gross failure to address the rampant illegal mining (galamsey) destroying Ghana’s rivers and farmlands.

In a press statement released on Wednesday, May 21, the CDM described the environmental situation under the Mahama government as “a national disgrace and an environmental catastrophe.”

The group criticised the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 campaign promises—including auditing mining concessions, banning mining in water bodies, reclaiming degraded lands, and operationalising the Ghana Gold Board—as mere “empty political rhetoric.”

Highlighting the poisoned state of major rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra, Offin, Tano, and Birim, the CDM said these vital water bodies have been “turned toxic” during Mahama’s tenure.

“President Mahama cannot claim ignorance. He cannot feign helplessness. The rot is thriving under his watch—and worse, under his silence,” the statement read.

The group further accused the government of complicity, attributing the surge in galamsey operations to a complete breakdown in enforcement and political will.

Demanding urgent intervention, the CDM called on the President to declare a state of emergency in all galamsey-affected areas.

“The rivers are bleeding. The forests are dying. The people are suffering. A state of emergency is not optional; it is overdue. Declare it now, or stand forever complicit,” the statement concluded.

President John Dramani Mahama has extended heartfelt wishes to mothers across Ghana in celebration of Mother’s Day, acknowledging their sacrifices and reaffirming his administration’s dedication to supporting women and families.

In a statement released on Sunday, President Mahama praised the resilience of mothers, describing them as a source of inspiration for their children and communities.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the tireless mothers working to build a better future for their children,” he said.

“Many of you face daily challenges, yet your strength and perseverance continue to uplift those around you.”

The President urged Ghanaians to reflect on the vital role mothers play in the nation’s development, calling for renewed efforts to create a Ghana where every mother and child can thrive.

He assured that his government remains committed to implementing policies that support women and families, including expanded access to quality healthcare, education, and economic empowerment initiatives for women.

“Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the incredible women who nurtured us. To my wife, Lordina, Vice President Naana Jane, and all mothers—thank you,” he added.

Mahama owes Ghanaians an apology for U-turn on L.I. 2462 revocation – Awula Serwah https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-owes-ghanaians-an-apology-for-u-turn-on-l-i-2462-revocation-awula-serwah/ Fri, 09 May 2025 06:37:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533218 The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has taken a strong stance against the government’s decision to amend Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 instead of revoking it entirely — a promise she says was clearly made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 election campaign.

Speaking at the JoyNews National Dialogue on Repealing L.I. 2462, Madam Serwah described the President’s shift as a betrayal of public trust and insisted that he owes Ghanaians an apology.

“The President assured us in the run-up to the election that L.I. 2462 was going to be revoked. He did not mention an amendment. He said revoked. So in fairness to Ghanaians, the President should apologise for the laying of an amendment rather than a revocation,” she said on Thursday, May 8.

Madam Serwah maintained that there should be no state-sanctioned mining in Ghana’s forest reserves, adding that the decision to propose an amendment instead of a full repeal undermines environmental protection efforts.

She argued that L.I. 2462 should be repealed outright, and new, carefully considered regulations should be developed in collaboration with legal experts.

“We don’t need state-sponsored mining in forest reserves,” she asserted. “Revoking L.I. 2462 is not the end of the story — of course not — but it will show goodwill and good faith. From there, we can move forward with constructive dialogue.”

Madam Serwah also criticised how illegal mining continues to be framed in public discourse.

“We shouldn’t be talking about banning something that is already criminal. Illegal mining is illegal — what we need is strict enforcement of the law. That’s all,” she added.

Mahama confirms officials quizzed over $245m African Games scandal https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-confirms-officials-quizzed-over-245m-african-games-scandal/ Thu, 08 May 2025 10:30:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532845 President John Mahama has confirmed that officials involved in the 2023 All-African Games scandal have been summoned and interrogated.

The Games, held in Accra in March 2024, attracted widespread criticism following reports that $245 million was spent on organizing the event.

Additionally, $15 million was allegedly allocated for the feeding of athletes and officials, while $4.5 million went towards the management system and accreditation tags.

During his Wednesday night address outlining his administration’s first 120-day social contract with Ghanaians, President Mahama stressed his commitment to fighting corruption and promoting accountability.

“A cornerstone of our commitment to good governance and accountability is tackling corruption and eliminating waste,” he stated.

“I promised to initiate inquiries and forensic audits into several critical matters of public interest. This war against corruption continues unabated. A number of officials have been invited and questioned concerning the 13th African Games.”

Earlier in April, former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif was reportedly questioned by the National Investigation Bureau. However, it remains unclear whether that interrogation was directly related to the African Games expenditure.

CJ suspension demo: ‘This is not governance, it is tyranny’ – Minority tells gov’t https://www.adomonline.com/cj-suspension-demo-this-is-not-governance-it-is-tyranny-minority-tells-govt/ Mon, 05 May 2025 13:15:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531725 The Minority in Parliament has issued a blistering condemnation of the government, accusing President John Mahama of presiding over a regime that undermines democratic norms and uses state power to intimidate political opponents.

The NPP Caucus made this known during a demonstration on Monday, May 5, held in protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President Mahama.

Presenting a petition to Parliament on behalf of the group, the Leader of the Caucus, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, claimed that President Mahama has “weaponised the security services”, deploying them in “retrogressive PNDC-style raids” targeting the homes of political adversaries.

He added, “Private citizens, including former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, have had their properties seized, their rights violated, and their dignities stripped.”

The Minority Leader said these actions amounted to a deliberate erosion of democratic governance, warning that the nation was witnessing “tyranny clothed in the robes of democracy”.

Meanwhile, Mr Afenyo-Markin also condemned the petitions that triggered the processes leading to the Chief Justice’s suspension, calling them “flimsy” and “pedestrian”, and accused the Council of State of failing the country by entertaining the three letters that called for the Chief Justice to be axed.

“For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this unfortunate attack… the Council of State has failed the country. We want you as an institution to put aside your individual differences and know that it is your institution that is under attack. Maybe today it is Torkornoo; tomorrow it might be you,” he warned.

Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that judicial officers must remain above partisan politics.

“You don’t serve at the whims and caprices of a political party and a government. If you wanted to be a politician, you would have been in a political party,” he said, adding that what is happening to Her Ladyship is “repugnant to good conscience.”

He also accused the government of hypocrisy, noting that it had previously criticised the expansion of the Supreme Court but had now appointed seven new judges under questionable circumstances.

“You know the process of appointing judges to the Supreme Court is not what has been used. So this reset is a negative reset,” he said, urging judicial staff not to be complacent.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further cautioned against political vengeance in the future.

“I also want to take this opportunity… to draw the attention of the nation to come to terms with the fact that there must be an end to bitterness. If this vicious cycle of ‘you did it to me; I will do it to you’ continues, there will be no further hope for our democracy,” he said.

He warned that such partisan actions could haunt current judicial staff in the future, especially with the possibility of a new government in 2028.

“I am humbly calling on all judicial service staff to think deeply about tomorrow. Don’t be too comfortable because today some government officials are promising you promotions, so you don’t want to speak out. We will speak up for the sake of posterity,” he said.

Charles Owusu urges Mahama to tackle galamsey with military force https://www.adomonline.com/charles-owusu-urges-mahama-to-tackle-galamsey-with-military-force/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 11:12:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530383 Governance advocate and former Forestry Commission official, Rev. Charles Owusu, has challenged President John Dramani Mahama to take bold and decisive action against illegal mining.

He warned that failure to do so would be a major letdown, especially considering his previous experience in office.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday, April 29, Charles Owusu described illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—as a national crisis that must be addressed beyond political lines.

He called for immediate intervention, including deploying the Ghana Armed Forces to guard the country’s forest reserves.

“I’ll be disappointed if Mahama fails in this galamsey fight. He’s tried and failed before, so he knows what’s at stake. If by tomorrow all forest zones are declared military zones, galamsey will end,” he said.

Rev. Owusu argued that the lack of political will is the biggest obstacle, suggesting that illegal miners often receive protection from political actors.

“We all know that depending on who is in power, their own people are involved. That’s why harsh actions are avoided,” he added.

He dismissed the idea that repealing existing mining laws like LI 2462 would solve the problem, stating that enforcement—not legislation—is the real issue.

He called for the creation of a dedicated Forest Protection Unit within the Ghana Armed Forces to safeguard the country’s dwindling green spaces.

“God didn’t give us gold to destroy ourselves. Our forests are disappearing, water bodies are polluted, and yet we’re doing nothing because we’re afraid to confront those behind it,” he lamented.

Rev. Owusu further highlighted the inconsistency in political narratives, recalling how the then-opposition NDC demanded swift action from President Akufo-Addo, only for the problem to persist under their own watch.

He further proposed restricting small-scale mining to Ghanaians, questioning the unchecked operations of foreign nationals and large mining companies in the sector.

“You have just four years. Use your power to end this. Bring together the Lands Ministry, Forestry Commission, Lands Commission, and security chiefs. Declare the forests a military zone. If you do that, we won’t be talking about galamsey on the radio anymore,” he said.

Mahama’s discretion is checked – Ayariga defends suspension procedure for Chief Justice https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-discretion-is-checked-ayariga-defends-suspension-procedure-for-chief-justice/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 10:41:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530377 The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has firmly defended the President’s constitutional authority to suspend a Chief Justice under Article 146(10)(a), asserting that the process is neither arbitrary nor unchecked.

In a statement released on April 30, 2025, he clarified that the President’s decision is constitutionally anchored in the advice of the Council of State, addressing concerns about potential bias or caprice.

“There is no unchecked discretion here because the discretion of the President to suspend the Chief Justice is checked by the fact that he must act ‘in accordance with the advice of the Council of State’,” he emphasized.

Responding to public apprehension, particularly from legal commentators and the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Mr. Ayariga argued that the Constitution includes safeguards to prevent any abuse of executive power.

He noted that Article 296(a), which demands fairness and candour, is inherently fulfilled by the involvement of the Council of State.

“The concerns over a particular President’s potential arbitrariness, caprice, bias, resentment, prejudice, or personal dislike are equally expected to be contained by the mechanism of ensuring that he must obtain the advice of the Council of State,” he stated.

Mr. Ayariga also questioned the inconsistency of those challenging the President’s discretion, pointing out that similar powers vested in the Chief Justice have not received the same level of scrutiny.

Referring to Article 159, he highlighted that the Chief Justice may, with the approval of the President and the advice of the Judicial Council, enact regulations for the Judicial Service—yet the GBA has never demanded a constitutional instrument to clarify how such discretion should be exercised.

“That is because they appreciate that it is a discretion that is well checked,” Mr. Ayariga asserted.

In conclusion, the Majority Leader warned against attempts to distort the constitutionally defined process, emphasizing that even terms like “stated misbehaviour” or “incompetence” are to be interpreted on a case-by-case basis by the Article 146 Committee.

“I have not yet come across their meanings,” he remarked, “because the Constitution says the Committee should determine, on a case-by-case basis, what those mean.”

How I lost family members to diabetes and cancer – Mahama recounts https://www.adomonline.com/how-i-lost-family-members-to-diabetes-and-cancer-mahama-recounts/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 09:02:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530314 President John Dramani Mahama has called for a nationwide campaign to promote public awareness, household screening, and early detection in response to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Ghana.

Describing the issue as both personal and urgent, President Mahama emphasized that the need for action was critical. Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in Accra on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, he shared how several members of his family, close friends, and political allies had succumbed to complications related to diabetes, cancer, and kidney failure.

“My father died from diabetes. My mother died in 2016 from the same condition, and my stepmother died of breast cancer,” he revealed.

“These are not just statistics. They are our loved ones, and we need to touch their lives through proper care and support.”

The former president also recounted the story of a long-time political supporter from Bole Bamboi who passed away after years of struggling to access dialysis treatment. The man had to regularly travel to Kumasi, the nearest center offering dialysis at the time, and eventually moved his entire family there to continue his treatment. Mr. Mahama explained that the cost of care put the family under immense financial strain.

“He sold all his assets to look after himself. When he passed, we had to step in to help his children finish school,” he said.

Mr. Mahama argued that such tragedies could be mitigated through preventive care and early intervention. He advocated for integrating the Ghana Medical Trust Fund with local-level health services to make screening and monitoring more accessible.

“We must link this program with our primary health care volunteers and designated community pharmacies so that wherever our citizens are, they can access basic checks,” Mr. Mahama urged.

“Occasional home visits by trained health volunteers to take blood pressure and sugar levels can go a long way.”

Additionally, he proposed a public education campaign to help Ghanaians understand the risk factors for non-communicable diseases.

“Many of these diseases are preventable and acquired through lifestyle,” he noted. “People need to understand the risks and take action early.”

President Mahama emphasized that the fund is not just a government initiative but a public intervention that could positively impact households across the country.

Kofi Adams explains why he was appointed as Sports Minister https://www.adomonline.com/kofi-adams-explains-why-he-was-appointed-as-sports-minister/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 13:38:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525941

Kofi Adams, Member of Parliament for Buem, believes his appointment as Minister for Sports and Recreation by President John Mahama reflects his unique leadership style.

Following the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) victory in the 2024 General Elections, Adams was confirmed as the new head of the Sports Ministry, succeeding Mustapha Ussif, who held the position under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

In an interview with Channel One TV, Adams expressed confidence that his balanced approach to leadership—combining firmness with empathy—was key to his selection.

“Why did he (President Mahama) give me the Sports Minister role? I am sure he was looking for someone with a blend of toughness and softness because this ministry requires that kind of tact,” he said.

“A ministry that must have a military mentality and operate with military precision requires both toughness and softness,” Adams added.

Since assuming office, Adams has engaged with various sports federations and actively monitored sporting activities across the country, as he settles into his new role.

CDM rates Mahama 1/4 in his first 100 days in office https://www.adomonline.com/cdm-rates-mahama-1-4-in-his-first-100-days-in-office/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 13:56:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525127 The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has given President John Mahama’s first 100 days in office a disappointing score of 1 out of 4, expressing serious concerns about “executive overreach, selective justice, and institutional decay,” which it claims undermine democracy and public trust.

The CDM criticized the President’s handling of the Attorney-General’s use of nolle prosequi to drop politically sensitive corruption cases, including the €2.37 million ambulance deal involving Dr. Ato Forson and the Saglemi Housing Project.

The group called this a “blatant abuse of discretionary power” and a betrayal of anti-corruption commitments.

Further criticisms included the Mahama administration’s silence on the ongoing galamsey crisis and its failure to offer a clear strategy to address environmental destruction.

The CDM also flagged concerns over economic mismanagement, citing the lack of clarity in major programs like the “24-hour economy” and “Big Push.”

Additionally, the CDM condemned the allocation of GH¢2.7 billion to the Office of Government Machinery during a period of national hardship.

It called for a shift in governance toward greater transparency, accountability, and a focus on the national interest.

“The administration’s early performance reflects misplaced priorities, weakening institutions rather than strengthening them,” the statement concluded, urging citizens to demand better leadership in the months ahead.

Mahama’s economic vision ‘unclear and troubling’ – CDM deconstructs 2025 budget https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-economic-vision-unclear-and-troubling-cdm-deconstructs-2025-budget/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 13:02:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525106

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has criticized the 2025 Budget as a mix of populist tax reliefs and fiscally irresponsible spending.

While acknowledging the cancellation of the E-Levy and allowances for Assembly Members, the group stated that the budget “fails to present a coherent economic strategy” to stabilize Ghana’s struggling economy.

A major concern raised was the GHC 2.7 billion allocated to the Office of Government Machinery, a significant increase from GHC 327 million under the previous regime. CDM described this as “fiscally irresponsible,” warning that overspending at the presidency could jeopardize macroeconomic stability.

The report also criticized the government for offering a mere 10% wage increase for public sector workers, compared to the 30% negotiated under the previous administration. “This raises questions about the government’s priorities amid a cost-of-living crisis,” the statement read.

Although institutions like Deloitte and Bloomberg have projected that inflation could dip to 15% by year-end, CDM attributed these improvements to global trends and prior reforms, rather than the current administration’s policies. “These improvements should not be misattributed to current leadership,” the group added.

CDM also called for clearer policy direction on major proposals such as the “24-hour economy” and “Big Push,” noting that their absence from financial policy statements creates more confusion than confidence.

CDM accuses Mahama’s government of using prosecutorial discretion as political tool https://www.adomonline.com/cdm-accuses-mahamas-government-of-using-prosecutorial-discretion-as-political-tool/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 13:00:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525093 The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has strongly criticized the administration of President John Dramani Mahama for allegedly using prosecutorial discretion as a political tool.

The civic group raised concerns over the recent use of nolle prosequi entries by Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine in several high-profile corruption and financial loss cases, including the ambulance procurement scandal involving Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and the SSNIT software case.

In a statement, CDM described the selective abandonment of these cases as a dangerous signal of executive interference and political bias, arguing that it undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust in Ghana’s justice system.

The organization pointed to Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates that discretionary power should not be exercised arbitrarily.

CDM also condemned what it termed “political witch-hunting” of public servants loyal to the previous government, citing recent dismissals in the Ashanti and Eastern regions.

The group emphasized that democratic governance is not just about winning elections but also about how power is exercised afterward.

The group raised alarms over efforts to remove the Chief Justice, warning that such actions could undermine judicial independence. “The judiciary must not be intimidated or manipulated by executive ambition,” CDM stated.

The group called on President Mahama to distance himself from actions that could be interpreted as executive interference and urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant in protecting the Constitution.

Trump tariffs could harm Ghana and global trade – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/trump-tariffs-could-harm-ghana-and-global-trade-mahama/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 10:54:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2523304 President John Dramani Mahama has criticised the 10% tariffs imposed on all imports by United States President Donald Trump, warning that the move could severely disrupt global trade and harm developing economies like Ghana.

Speaking during a bilateral trade meeting with the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, on Tuesday, Mahama expressed concern over the potential impact of the tariffs.

“Many of the factories that have set up there might look for areas where they can receive cheaper tariffs to be able to export into the American market. So it has very severe implications for everybody,” he cautioned.

He added that unilateral decisions of this nature undermine global cooperation and development.

“I believe that a multilateral world serves us all better than a unilateral one, where people just make decisions based on only their own country. We must look at global interest and partnership rather than our national interest,” Mahama said.

President Pavel echoed Mahama’s concerns and urged for diplomatic engagement with the United States to reconsider the policy.

“I think imposing tariffs in such a way doesn’t help the situation in the U.S., Europe, and other countries. Tariffs are damaging everyone. In my view, it is unfortunate to impose such a wave of tariffs without negotiating,” Pavel stated.

He added, “I think that through negotiation, we can achieve results that will be beneficial for the United States but also not destroy other countries. Because by damaging other countries so much, it will create many problems that will have to be dealt with later on—and that may be more costly than reducing the pressure on tariffs.”

The directive, announced on April 2, 2025, was enacted through an Executive Order under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA).

U.S. officials have defended the measure, saying it is aimed at addressing economic and national security threats posed by persistent trade deficits.

Let’s find ways to complete the 50 Czech steel bridges project – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/lets-find-ways-to-complete-the-50-czech-steel-bridges-project-mahama/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 07:01:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2523203 President John Dramani Mahama has called for renewed efforts to complete the stalled 50 Czech steel bridges project, urging both Ghana and the Czech Republic to find ways to overcome the challenges delaying its completion.

President Mahama acknowledged that the project had been hindered by the debt exchange programme but stressed the importance of re-engineering the initiative so a second phase can be implemented.

He made the remarks on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, during a joint press briefing with the Czech President, Petr Pavel, who is currently on a three-day state visit to Ghana.

“I raised the issue of the 50 bridges project, which has been stalled due to the debt exchange programme. I urge the two countries to explore ways of re-engineering the project to ensure we complete the 50 Bridges Programme and also implement the second phase of 100 bridges,” he stated.

The 50 steel bridges, which were part of an agreement between the two nations, were designed to improve infrastructure and support economic development in rural Ghanaian communities.

However, financial constraints linked to the country’s debt situation have delayed progress.

In addition to the bridges project, President Mahama commended the ongoing cooperation between Ghana and the Czech Republic in the field of healthcare.

He praised the Czech government’s continued support for the medical evacuation (medevac) programme, which provides healthcare services to vulnerable groups in Ghana.

“This medevac program has been essential in providing healthcare to vulnerable populations and has also allowed for the exchange of medical expertise and knowledge. It is not only a symbol of our deep cooperation but also an important partnership in addressing health challenges in the Sahel and Western African subregions,” he added.

Mahama should remove Kwakye Ofosu from his position as the President’s spokesperson – Janet Nabla https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-should-remove-kwakye-ofosu-from-his-position-as-the-presidents-spokesperson-janet-nabla/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 15:29:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2522609 Janet Asana Nabla, Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), has urged former President John Mahama to remove Felix Kwakye Ofosu from his position as spokesperson.

This follows concerns over recent comments made by Kwakye Ofosu regarding alleged drug trafficking and money laundering involving two aircraft that transited through Ghana.

The call came after a heated exchange on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) between Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications, and Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee. Kwakye Ofosu, in his response to criticism, referred to Rev. Fordjour as a “clown,” adding to the controversy surrounding the alleged drug-related flights.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Janet Nabla criticized the government’s communication on the matter, particularly a letter from the Flagstaff House which dismissed the allegations without offering clarity.

She expressed concerns over Mr. Kwakye Ofosu’s explanation, claiming it raised more questions than answers.

“If someone tries so hard to convince people, it creates more doubt. Every single flight that passes through Ghana’s borders must go through all security checks. How were two flights checked and the third wasn’t?” she asked.

Ms. Nabla also highlighted the dangers of drug trafficking to the nation’s youth, warning against allowing Ghana to become a transit point for illegal substances. She urged President Mahama to act decisively.

“Felix Kwakye Ofosu isn’t just communicating for Mahama, but for all of Ghana. We don’t need people who don’t tell the truth as communicators,” she concluded.

president john dramani mahama has announced plans to introduce legislation criminalizing the destruction of cocoa farms for mining activities.

he argues that cocoa cultivation is more economically viable than mining, as it provides year-round income and sustains the land for future use.

speaking after a courtesy call from the ghana cocoa, coffee, and sheanut farmers association, mahama stressed the need to protect cocoa farms to secure the country’s economic future.

“we must ensure people are not cutting down cocoa trees to mine gold. once the land is mined out, it becomes useless, whereas cocoa trees can yield revenue for 30 years or more,” he stated.

“we are exploring legislative measures to prevent cocoa farm destruction for mining.”

mahama also declared 2025 as the “year of correction,” aimed at revitalizing the cocoa sector.

he criticized the ghana cocoa board (cocobod) for poor financial management under the previous administration, citing excessive spending on administrative costs rather than farmer support.

“cocobod’s total debt stands at gh₵3.2 billion, with gh₵9 million due by september. this is money that should have gone to farmers,” he lamented.

he also highlighted declining cocoa production despite an increase in cocobod’s workforce, calling it counterproductive.

to sustain cocoa production, mahama stressed the need for fair pricing, advocating for farmers to receive at least 70% of cocoa revenue.

“in the past four years, producer prices remained stagnant despite currency depreciation. this year will be a year of correction to address these issues and restore the industry,” he affirmed.

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a comprehensive audit of the Buipe Sheanut Factory, which has been non-operational for some time.

He accused the previous administration and the management of the US$10 million agribusiness facility of misusing funds meant to sustain its operations.

Established in 2012 as a joint venture between the Government of Ghana and Sysgate Brazil Limited, the factory was designed to add value to sheanut products and create employment, particularly for women in the Savannah Region.

According to Mahama, the Nana Addo-led administration, which took over in 2016, not only depleted the factory’s capital but also sold off stockpiled sheanuts that could have been processed for revenue.

Speaking during a meeting with the Ghana Cocoa, Coffee, and Sheanut Farmers Association (COCOSHE), Mahama emphasized the need for an audit to hold those responsible for the factory’s mismanagement accountable.

“The factory was running well with capital and a stock of sheanut when the change of government happened. The new administration spent the capital, sold the raw materials, and spent that money too. After exhausting all resources, the factory had to shut down and lay off workers,” he stated.

Mahama stressed that such financial mismanagement must not go unpunished, insisting that those responsible should face consequences.

Mahama orders Attorney General to recover misappropriated Pwalugu Dam funds https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-orders-attorney-general-to-recover-misappropriated-pwalugu-dam-funds/ Fri, 21 Mar 2025 09:37:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517374 President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Attorney General to recover all misappropriated funds linked to the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project, which was initiated under the Akufo-Addo administration.

The President expressed outrage over the payment of $12 million to a contractor despite no significant progress on the project, which commenced in November 2019.

As part of his broader anti-corruption agenda, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), President Mahama is determined to reclaim lost state funds and ensure accountability.

Describing the abandoned project site as a “crime scene,” he vowed that those responsible would face justice.

Addressing chiefs and residents of the Upper East Region, the President reaffirmed his commitment to completing stalled projects in the area, stressing that the Pwalugu Dam was meant to enhance agriculture and economic development, not serve as an avenue for embezzlement.

In 2024, the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) defended the payment of $11.9 million to the contractor, explaining it was for mobilization rather than completed work. However, President Mahama appears unconvinced, insisting that the looted funds be retrieved.

Additionally, he has tasked the Finance Minister with making the necessary arrangements to restart the project.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has revealed his intention to watch the Black Stars’ upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday.

Ghana is pushing for a spot in the global tournament, and this match is crucial for their campaign.

During a visit to the team, Mahama shared a lighthearted moment, joking that close friends had advised him to eat before the game to avoid distress if the result turned out to be disappointing.

“I will take time off and watch the game myself, even though my heart is not very good at watching soccer. I will brave it, as they have told me to eat before watching the game,” Mahama said.

He encouraged the players to give their best performance and bring joy to the nation. “My hope is that you will justify my sitting and watching you guys.

The whole of Ghana is going to be behind you, and I am sure that you can make it,” he added.

After facing Chad, the Black Stars will travel to Madagascar for another qualifier on March 24, 2025.

Victory in both matches would significantly boost Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Speaking at Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary celebration on March 6, he appealed to the people of Bawku, emphasizing the urgent need for unity.

“To the people of Bawku and other areas, it is time for lasting peace to prevail,” he stated.

Quoting Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he underscored the power of unity: “The forces that unite us are inherently and far greater than the divisions imposed upon us.”

Mahama further stressed that his appeal came not just as President but as a son and brother entrusted with a solemn duty.

“Our children deserve to inherit a peaceful land where their dreams are nurtured, not where their nightmares are relived. They deserve to inherit a land where our markets are bustling with trade, not tension and conflict. They deserve schools that echo with learning, not melancholic silence,” he stated.

He urged the people to reject division, mistrust, and past grievances, calling for reconciliation.

“Let us give the renewal of friendship a chance. Let us give peace a chance,” he urged.

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized that Ghana’s dependence on donor aid and external financial support cannot be resolved through rhetoric alone but requires decisive and strategic action.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House on March 6, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged ongoing concerns about the country’s reliance on imports, donor aid, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailouts.

However, he cautioned that merely reiterating these concerns without implementing tangible solutions risks turning them into a cliché.

“Discussions about our independence often highlight our reliance on imports, donor aid, and IMF bailouts as signs of continued dependency. This reminder is repeated so often that, while undeniably real, it risks becoming a cliché.

“Yet, the effectiveness of this reminder lies not in just repeating it but in our willingness to take decisive action—actions that will break the chain of dependency, not just empty rhetoric about an Africa beyond aid.

“Proclaiming self-reliance while marching straight into the hands of donor agencies, begging bowl in hand, is meaningless,” he stated.

Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration is committed to restoring economic stability by implementing policies focused on fiscal discipline and self-sufficiency.

“To break this cycle of dependence and restore our economy, my administration is formulating policies based on fiscal discipline and living within our means,” he added.

Lawyer petitions Mahama for presidential pardon for Ato Essien https://www.adomonline.com/lawyer-petitions-mahama-for-presidential-pardon-for-ato-essien/ Mon, 03 Mar 2025 12:06:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2510345 A petition has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, seeking a presidential pardon for William Ato Essien, the founder of First Capital Plus, which later became Capital Bank.

Ato Essien was sentenced to 15 years in prison by an Accra High Court after being found guilty of misappropriating over GH¢90 million in liquidity support provided by the Bank of Ghana to Capital Bank.

Initially, he was allowed to avoid imprisonment by repaying the GH¢90 million as restitution. However, after paying GH¢30 million upfront in December 2022, he failed to meet the agreed payment terms for the remaining GH¢60 million, leading to his custodial sentence.

The petition, submitted by lawyer Andrew Appiah-Danquah on February 27, raises concerns about the fairness and integrity of Ato Essien’s conviction.

It highlights his contributions to Ghana’s financial sector, job creation, and support for local businesses, arguing that his conviction undermines the achievements of a visionary entrepreneur.

According to the petition, Capital Bank’s collapse in 2017 was not due to fraud but rather a politically driven effort to consolidate financial power.

It claims that the GH₵620 million liquidity support was a commercial loan, not fraudulent activity, and that the bank had already paid GH₵336 million in interest over two years.

Furthermore, it states that the GH₵480 million labeled as a “shareholder loan” was part of a strategic restructuring of non-performing loans, a common banking practice rather than an act of fraud.

The petition also points out inconsistencies in the legal process, noting that three other accused persons—Dr. Tetteh Nettey, Rev. Fitzgerald Odonkor, and Kate Quartey-Papafio—were acquitted on the same charges for which Ato Essien was convicted.

It argues that Ato Essien was pressured into a plea bargain and agreed to pay GH₵90 million—an amount higher than the alleged loss—of which he has already paid GH₵43.75 million.

The petition urges President Mahama to grant a presidential pardon, stating, “Granting a presidential pardon to Ato Essien will not only restore justice but will also affirm your commitment to a truly new Ghana—one where freedom and justice are not just words, but lived realities”

President John Dramani Mahama has called on religious leaders, particularly Christian communities, to extend their presence into rural areas to promote morality, discipline, and godliness among Ghanaians.

Speaking at a fellowship with the clergy in Kumasi, Mahama emphasized the need for Ghana’s spiritual leaders to expand their reach, win more members, and contribute to building a more moral and orderly society.

The event in Kumasi mirrored a similar gathering held in Accra as part of Mahama’s strategy to engage faith leaders and seek divine influence in governance.

Mahama stressed that the church has a critical role in fostering peace, progress, and economic growth in Ghana.

He assured that under his leadership, he would govern with integrity, humility, and wisdom while incorporating the ideas and contributions of the people.

Additionally, he encouraged the church to remain vocal in offering constructive criticism of his administration, ensuring accountability and national development.
