Adams Sanogo, trader, and Kwame Dunga, at large, allegedly conspired to steal US$50,000, GH¢50,000, an iPhone 15 Pro Max mobile phone valued at GH¢15,000 from Reverend Lillian Kumah, widow of Mr Kumah, who was also a former Member of Parliament for Ejisu. Kumah died in February this year.

The accused persons are also believed to have stolen her Apple iPad valued at GH¢15,000, a Samsung Z fold mobile phone valued at GH¢12,000, a Microsoft laptop valued at GH¢7,000, a black school bag valued at GH¢400 and an Apple watch.

Rabiu Falilu, a Senior High School (SHS) leaver, is also accused of dishonestly receiving some of the stolen items.

The accused persons, who were arrested in the Ashanti Region and handed over to the Police in Accra, have denied the crime and were remanded into police custody last Friday to assist in the investigation.

They are also to assist the police in arresting an accomplice who has been identified as Kwame Dunga, who is on the run.

The court presided over by Isaac Addo declined to grant them bail as prayed by their counsel, Benjamin Ofori.

They are to reappear on August 7, 2024.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Raymond Ackom, said Reverend Lillian Kumah, the complainant was a resident of Achimota-Mile 7 in Accra.

Sanogo is a mobile phone dealer at Adum-PZ and a resident of Kokoso, all suburbs of Kumasi whilst Falilu was a resident of Jamasi in the Ashanti region.

He said on December 29, 2023, an unknown person, gained access to the place of abode of Reverend Kumah and stole her personal belongings.

The prosecution said she made a formal complaint to the Police, furnishing the Police with Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) video footage of the incident.

On July 24, 2024, a Police investigation led to the arrest of Falilu, who had the complainant’s iPhone 15 Pro Max mobile phone at Jamasi in the Ashanti region, the court was told.

The prosecution said after his arrest, he led the Police to Adum PZ, Kumasi, where Sanogo was also arrested and during interrogation, Sanogo admitted to selling the phone to Falilu.

He further mentioned Dunga, another mobile phone dealer at Adum PZ, who is currently at large as his accomplice, the court heard.

The prosecution said Sanogo and Falilu were cautioned, charged for the offence and put before the court, meanwhile, efforts were underway to arrest Dunga.

In praying for bail, counsel for the accused persons said Sanogo and Falilu had fixed places of abode, was not a flight risk and had people of substance to stand as sureties for them as well as assisted and still willing to assist the Police in their investigations.

He said Sanogo was a middleman who bought a phone from Kwame whilst Falilu, he said was just an SHS leaver who led the Police to Sanogo, the one he got the phone from.

The prosecution opposed the bail application and said if the accused persons were released, they would interfere with investigations, would not appear to stand trial, and they had been on the run since 2023 as the Police deployed intelligent officers to the Ashanti Region who arrested them only two days ago.

Captain Smart must provide answers – John Kumah’s widow lodges official complaint with police https://www.adomonline.com/captain-smart-must-provide-answers-john-kumahs-widow-lodges-official-complaint-with-police/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 18:59:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2366896 In a tragic turn of events, Hon Dr John Kumah, the Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu, passed away at the age of 45 in the early hours of Thursday, March 7, following a brief illness.

Information from the Kumah family indicates that the health of the former Deputy Minister deteriorated en route to Accra in an ambulance, leading to an unplanned diversion to the Suhum Government Hospital, where he succumbed, leaving behind his wife, Apostle Mrs Lilian Kumah, and six children.

Amidst the prevailing grief following Dr Kumah’s passing, a series of online videos surfaced featuring Captain Smart, host of Onua TV, alleging that the late MP and other prominent figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were targeted victims of poisoning.

The maverick commentator specifically emphasised Dr Kumah’s continued struggles as a result of the alleged poisoning.

Making audacious claims, he confidently declared possession of concrete evidence to support his statements, challenging any skeptics to dare him to unveil the proof.

This shocking revelation has prompted Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, the late MP’s widow, to take decisive action.

To unravel the truth behind her husband’s death, she lodged a formal complaint with the Accra Central Divisional Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service, on Friday, March 8, seeking answers regarding the grave pronouncements made in the circulating video.

Sources have disclosed that Apostle Kumah, in her complaint to the authorities, asserted that Smart’s allegations were false and were causing significant harm to the reputation of her departed husband.

She expressed deep concern over the insensitivity shown towards the grieving family and called on the authorities to take swift action against those spreading falsehoods.

This plea for justice highlights the emotional toll that misinformation can take on a bereaved family. John Kumah’s widow’s determined stance reflects bravery as she strives for justice and clarity, even amidst these challenging times.

As the narrative unfolds, Apostle Kumah’s call for action underscores the broader issue of responsible journalism and the impact of unfounded claims on the lives of those affected.

The grieving family’s plea for intervention serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the responsibility to prevent the dissemination of harmful falsehoods, especially in times of profound loss and mourning.

John Kumah: Brilliant, gravitas and totally fit to be Bawumia’s running-mate https://www.adomonline.com/john-kumah-brilliant-gravitas-and-totally-fit-to-be-bawumias-running-mate-2/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 15:14:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2334939 One of the best things that can befall any politician is to do a turnaround and see his popularity accelerate.

And oh yes, it has been incredible watching the rapid acceleration of the political journey and meteoric rise of the member of parliament for Ejisu and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. John Kumah.

Indeed, you couldn’t get a more urban, progressive or personally attractive man than Dr. John Kumah, and truly not many people in the public eye give you the kind of impression that he gives to the electorate.

From a bloody obscure corner as a youth activist to a national prominence and figurehead, John Kumah has charmed his audience and disarmed his opponents.

When he first took his major appointment under Akufo-Addo as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP) in 2017, he handled the portfolio with finesse, deftness and excellence.

When he was elevated as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, John Kumah consistently went out of his way to deliver for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Truly, Dr. John Kumah is an authentic star, who lights up every room he enters and just like John Agyekum Kufuor, John Kumah deploys his courtesy and charm for political purposes.

Just watch him in action when he’s leading the political conversation. He does not sneer or talk down to his audience, as most political actors would do. Instead, he wows them.

There were times that I watched John Kumah compliment his political opponents even amid uncomplimentary hostility and in doing so, he pulled the New Patriotic Party (NPP) towards both the centre ground and acceptance and succeeded in winning a lot of NDC youths and undecided voters onto the side of the NPP.

And if you are tempted to think this sort of courtesy across the political divide is a mere bourgeois triviality, remember how effective this maturity of style has also been in larger contexts.

Sometimes a line or two from a politician’s public advocacy resonates or echoes to perhaps evoke something of a more optimistic, inspirational political epoch.

Dr Kumah understands this so well. He understands that policy communication isn’t about self-affirmation, but rather, it is about persuading people, changing minds, and winning hearts and minds.

He also understands that dealing directly with the issue, even helping your opponent build their best argument, and then demolishing that is the soundest way to argue if you really want to come up with a constructive solution to an issue.

In actual fact, the Akufo-Addo government’s deficit reduction plan relies on IMF policy credibility and John Kumah has been at the heart of the conversation with convincing arguments, a calm demeanour and brittle sentiment. That pretty much sums up what he has been up to at the Finance Ministry.

In 3 years, he has risen from the obscurity of a young political player to become a force in the public advocacy space with regards to economics, finance and public policy.

Essentially, John Kumah has built a solid track record in a short time and that track record contains much more than his enemies—or even many of his friends have been ready to acknowledge.

So, the question is, why should he not be Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 elections? Why should John Kumah not be the man to leap forward and be on the ticket to save the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from itself in 2024? My own answer is that if the Deputy Finance Minister is not the answer, there is something desperately wrong with the question.

In all honesty, a certain grace has marked John Kumah’s political outings since he emerged onto the national stage. He has not just taken to the realities of Ghana politics better than any other names being linked to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as running mate.

He has also done it infinitely less condescendingly than Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Joe Osei Owusu and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu would have done.

And now the major talking points on both social and traditional media show what a key asset John Kumah is to the NPP.

If the day ever comes that John Kumah becomes Bawumia’s running mate, I shall be among those NDC activists pitching our camp in favour of the NPP.

To you, John Kumah, stay right where you are and stick to what you’re good at. The world has already taken notice of you.

I shall be back.

Is Bawumia/John Kumah 2024 dream ticket viable? https://www.adomonline.com/is-bawumia-john-kumah-2024-dream-ticket-viable/ Sun, 12 Nov 2023 14:45:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2317933 It has been a few days since Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured the NPP nomination for election 2024, and already the parlor and guessing game of who will be the vice presidential candidate is well underway.

In fact, ink is spilling, and electrons by the millions are energized as pundits, journalists, bloggers, and citizens debate the pros and cons, pluses and minuses of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kennedy Agyapong for the veep pick. Plenty of other names and a surprising array of potential vice presidential candidates are circulating.

Many analysts believe that Dr. Bawumia will not entertain daring choices that he can’t have enough rapport with and that he’s going to do this in a careful deliberate way outside of the day-to-day political pressures that inevitably start up during the election cycle. In a conversation hosted on Twitter Space Tuesday night, a contributor from Democracy Watch – Dr Senanu Amegashie re-emphasize the complex calculus of the vice presidential selection process which usually defies all equations.

The academic actually shared his picks of potential vice presidential candidates, and for him, the Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. John Kumah represents a good fit for Dr. Bawumia. Even though this was purely an academic exercise, it has gained currency and created dozens of threads and conversations on and off social media. All things considered, Dr. John Kumah has offered himself as exhibit A in the case of hope for the youth.

Indeed, he’s seen as a mirror in which thousands of young people are seeing their cherished ideals of tolerance, cooperation, and equality reflected. Actually, there are aspects of Dr. John Kumah’s biography that make him a valuable balance to the Bawumia ticket. In little over two and half years, Dr. John Kumah has risen from the obscurity of a young political player to become a force in the public advocacy space with regard to economics, finance, and public policy.

When he took his first major appointment under the Nana Akufo-Addo presidency as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP) in 2017, he wanted to be seen as a new kind of conservative, young, liberal-minded, socially concerned, and above all, modern politician.

Instead, there would be a positive upbeat, and inclusive vision for Ghana after displacing veteran MP, Kwabena Owusu-Aduomi in the NPP primaries, and a landslide victory in the 2020 parliamentary elections in Ejisu. Then came his elevation in 2021, when President Akufo-Addo nominated him to deputise for Ken Ofori-Atta at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. Since entering the Finance Ministry, Dr. John Kumah has maintained his reputation as a moderate who has earned respect for his honesty and his commitment to national duty, party work, and activism.

It is easy to view the selection of a Vice Presidential candidate as purely the product of political calculus. But Presidential candidates are also picking someone with whom they might work closely for four or eight years, and, when considering a potential deputy, character matters. Of course, even a confident Presidential candidate wants to make a Vice Presidential pick that will help him to win and it can be argued that Dr John Kumah has received high ratings from a diverse range of the voting public to make any ticket likelier to win.

The biggest thing that Dr. John Kumah’s candidacy would have going for it is that he’d mobilise voters, whether geographically, demographically, class, ethnicity, gender, age, or religion. A second reason that Dr. John Kumah is a good fit for Bawumia is that they are cut from the same political cloth. Both are Economists, as well as mainstream conservatives who express a strong commitment to righting social wrongs, but also speak the language of fiscal responsibility and enterprise.

There’s also another asset Dr. John Kumah could bring to the Bawumia campaign, his wit as a political adversary, brilliance, dedication, and toughness. Dr. John Kumah is what so many others pretend to be — a politician with sound judgment who doesn’t have to hide behind bluster to keep going.

To put it more bluntly, the man radiates honesty, excellence, charisma, a positive vision for the future, a voice for empowerment, and a role model for the youth. As a matter of fact, Dr. John Kumah has had one of the great career arcs of modern Ghanaian politics since becoming an MP and Minister less than four years ago. As a green young outsider, he took over a constituency in a slump so deep and transformed his party’s image by building an ultramodern party office for the NPP in Ejisu.

He followed it up with Ejisu constituency women empowerment programs, where women in business and startups are given financial assistance to cushion their businesses or start one respectively. It is worth noting that his initiatives in promoting formal education in the Ejisu constituency are the game changers for thousands of young people in and around Ejisu.

Incredibly, he’s among a few of President Akufo-Addo’s ministers who are actually showing the way and offering hope for a better tomorrow even in the midst of these bruising and tumultuous times. And yet, for all Dr. John Kumah’s momentum, there has never been a bumpiness, or even a hint of fragility, to his upward curve.

Truth is, Dr. John Kumah is a shining example of faith in action – a progressive who likes to get things done. He is clever in an orthodox sense and he has a good temperament for the vice presidential job. Yes, Dr. John Kumah is dashing and handsome, and with an infectious personality.

His public records speak volumes and he also appears likable – A man who has devoted his life to fighting for others, and with a reputation as a consensus builder – A team player and an affable individual – A man with distinguished record, and with fundamental decency, who’s widely considered as more of a workhorse than showhorse. A leader who cares more about making a difference than making headlines.

The 2024 presidential ticket ought to be a proven pair of hands. We are talking about a ticket that can offer a specific and persuasive agenda to appeal to the economic anxieties of the good people of Ghana. It ought to be a ticket that can appeal to the floating voter and the dominant ethnic groupings in the country – a ticket with a broader appeal and a record of accomplishments. Quite frankly, Dr John Kumah fits the role.

He appears to be both hugely unifying and has much prospect of enlisting much support. His stature has grown over the years and his Ashanti lineage put him miles ahead of any would-be contenders. I shall be back.

BoG is solid; ignore NDC’s funny propaganda – John Kumah https://www.adomonline.com/bog-is-solid-ignore-ndcs-funny-propaganda-john-kumah/ Thu, 10 Aug 2023 12:55:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2282191
Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr John Kumah, has jumped to the defense of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, and his two deputies following the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s demand for their resignations.

Dr Kumah urged Ghanaians to ignore NDC’s “funny propaganda” against the Central bank’s leadership and the entire government.

In a Facebook post, the Ejisu Member of Parliament (MP) said BoG is in a “solid state” and is nowhere near collapse.

According to him, the BoG’s main source of income is from government transactions, and should government transactions reduce, it will automatically affect the income of the Central bank.

“Ignore this funny NDC Propaganda about the collapse of the Bank of Ghana (BoG). BoG is Solid! The NDC is funny! It’s not true that a recapitalization levy is to be introduced for BoG, the Central Bank hasn’t collapsed.”

“The main source of income to the Bank is from government transactions i.e. fees on all government transfers, the bank’s investments in marketable instruments and also earnings from non-marketable holdings of the Bank.

“Given that government transactions have gone down, naturally, the income of the bank will go down. Also, because of the debt restructuring, earnings on their holdings on markable and non-marketable bonds will go down,” he said.

He added that “Beyond this, the Bank is solid and is capable of performing its core function. Article 183 clause 2 (c) of the 1992 constitution enjoins the Bank of Ghana to promote and encourage economic development in the country, hence there is nothing untoward in the actions of the Central Bank to support the state in its economic recovery efforts.”

The Deputy Minister also intimated that the losses recorded by the central bank are not unusual as most central banks around the world do same to economic anchor objectives.

“It is important to further highlight that a  negative balance sheet by a Central Bank is not unusual most Central Banks around the world run negative balances to achieve the  overall economic anchor objectives of a  Central Bank.”

The NDC and its Minority Caucus at a news conference on Tuesday demanded the resignation of the Central Bank’s Governor and issued 21 days ultimatum to Dr. Ernest Addison and his two deputies for superintending over the unprecedented ¢60.8 billion loss last year.

The Minority Chief Whip also aimed at the Central Bank for the construction of a new head office amidst the current crisis.

However, the BoG has replied saying that GH₵53.1 billion of the total loss of GH₵60 billion occurred as a result of government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

According to a statement from the Bank, BoG stepped in to arrest a major economic and social crisis since the domestic auction was failing.

According to BoG, further downgrade of Ghana’s sovereign debt rating which blocked Ghana’s access to international capital market borrowing triggered a liquidity crisis, spilling over into a balance of payments crisis.

It added that “In 2 months, the Bank of Ghana lost $500 million in reserves and built significant overdraft with the government as a result of the auction failures.

“It became clear that Ghana was on an unsustainable path, and the Government had to approach the IMF for support in July 2022.

“The IMF process included putting into place a credible programme of reform, which included restructuring the total government debt to sustainable levels.

“Until the Staff Level Agreement with the IMF was reached in December 2022, the Bank of Ghana had to continue to provide the necessary support to keep the economy running.”

Burning Issues: No plans to cancel Covid-19 levy – John Kumah https://www.adomonline.com/burning-issues-no-plans-to-cancel-covid-19-levy-john-kumah/ Tue, 01 Aug 2023 15:38:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2279290 Deputy Minister of Finance, John Kumah, has said the government has no intention of cancelling the Covid-19 levy, despite calls from many to abrogate its collection.

He revealed this during an interview on Adom FM’s late political talk show, Burning Issues, hosted by Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom.

The Covid-19 Health Recovery Levy Act, 2021, imposes a 1% Covid-19 Health Recovery Levy on various expenditures related to the pandemic.

Despite the fact that some have argued that the levy should be scrapped since Covid-19 is no longer classified as a pandemic, the government did not include such a provision in the 2023 budget review presentation, leaving those expectations unmet.

Addressing the development, Dr John Kumah stated, “though the World Health Organisation has declared Covid-19 is no longer a pandemic, its impact still exists. Abolishing the Covid tax cannot happen now. We understand that the pandemic is no longer with us, but its implications are still affecting us, and the government has not yet finished paying off the money borrowed to sustain the economy during the pandemic. That is why we are unable to cancel the Covid levy.”

D Kumah further explained that the specific tax is set to expire in 2024, and when the time comes, the entire nation will collectively decide its fate.

Until then, the government believes it is necessary to continue collecting the levy to address the ongoing impacts of the pandemic on the country’s economy and public health.

So, despite calls for its cancellation, the Covid-19 levy will remain in effect until 2024, as the government deems it crucial to manage the lingering consequences of the pandemic.

Lives of politicians in danger – John Kumah https://www.adomonline.com/lives-of-politicians-in-danger-john-kumah/ Tue, 01 Aug 2023 15:24:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2279252 Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, has described recent times as difficult for every politician in Ghana.

His comment is in relation to the reports of stolen monies in the home of former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

According to him, there is no appointee in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government who is not currently leaving in fear.

“Our lives are in danger but the good thing is that we are given police protection. The idea and perception people have about us is now scary and it will be difficult for people to accept public offices in years to come,” he said.

He made these comments on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, stating their current situation is as a result of the thoughts people have about politicians.

“There is apathy in the system because people think politicians are responsible for the hardships, especially now that this case has come up and that is the danger for us but it is not true all politicians have monies in our house. We are in dangerous times,” he stated.

To Mr Kumah, this should be the time for politicians to be very careful as he urged the media to also reshape discussions on the matter.

“The exaggeration on this matter can create problems for all of us so the media should take caution,” he urged.

The case initially arose from a report of stealing filed with the police by the former Minister and her husband, Daniel Osei-Kuffour.

Subsequently, the police conducted investigations, made arrests, recovered stolen items, and presented the docket to the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice for review and guidance.

The OSP took action on Monday, July 24, 2023, by arresting Madam Dapaah for questioning, following over 200 petitions received to investigate her.

They also conducted searches at her residences at Ablemkpe and Cantonments, where allegedly stolen amounts totaling US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana cedis were reported to have been found, taken by her housekeepers between July and October 2022.

We will create millions of jobs via ‘YouStart Programme’ – John Kumah https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-create-millions-of-jobs-via-youstart-programme-john-kumah/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 15:46:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2165161 Government has resolved to create millions of jobs through the ‘YouStart Programme’.

According to a Deputy Finance Minister, Dr John Kumah, the programme is dear to the heart of President Nana Akufo-Addo whose agenda is to create blue chip companies among local investors through the entrepreneurship project.

Speaking at a signing ceremony with 13 Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) to support the implementation of the commercial part of the ¢10 billion ‘YouStart entrepreneurship programme, Dr John Kumah said the partnership was very important to government’s ambition of creating future entrepreneurs who will dominate the economy.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, signed for the government, while John Awuah, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Bankers, signed for the coordinating institution of the PFIs, which the GAB represent.

He told Joy Business that government will create an environment that will boost entrepreneurship.

“We need to create the opportunities in which people can be trained as entrepreneurs, and they also hire other people to grow. I mean if you look at the population statistics of almost 37% of our people being between 15 and 35, it creates a lot of pressure. And I think it is incumbent on us to create the financial system with training and reward system that encourages entrepreneurship to take risks”.

He explained that the partnership with the banks is key to the sustainability of developing the entrepreneurship eco-system.

“The banks have committed about ¢5 billion over three years to be deployed to SME’s and that’s what we going to work with for it to happen. And so that will create excitement, especially, in this period that we are also having an arrangement with the International Monetary Fund. So that we move beyond dependence on government and donors into our own creative energies”.

The PFIs are to support the programme and ensure its extension to entrepreneurs with businesses in rural areas to help create jobs and improve the livelihood of the people.

The funds would be used to meet the working capital requirement of businesses, support their expansion through acquisition of equipment to enhance productivity and create more well-paid jobs, especially for the youth.

Govt working to halt cedi depreciation – John Kumah https://www.adomonline.com/govt-working-to-halt-cedi-depreciation-john-kumah/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 14:44:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2148268 The government has initiated a raft of measures to address the depreciation of the cedi, a Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr John Ampontuah Kumah.

The local currency has recorded a -28.82% depreciation to the dollar as of August 8th, 2022.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Kumah said a key measure to halt the slide has been the use of the “Forward Foreign Exchange Auction which has helped to moderate the spot demand. Government is committed to deepening the Forward Foreign Exchange Auction to take away the spot demand pressure.”

He was hopeful that the recently approved US$750,000,000 by Parliament upon completion of the loan process will boost the Foreign Exchange position of the government.

Mr Kumah added that the government was working assiduously with Afrexim Bank to finalise the loan.

Additionally, he said the government had secured US$250,000,000 from selected banks awaiting Parliamentary approval and announced a Gold Purchase Programme to boost reserves.

He posted: “We expect Parliament to be recalled back to Parliament to consider and approve the facility. This will go a long way to increase the FX position of the Central Bank.

“Again, apart from the normal forex purchases the BoG conducts, the Cocoa Loan is also expected soon. That facility will also give support to the Foreign Exchange position of the country.

“The recently announced Gold Purchase Programme will also contribute significantly to the building of a healthy reserve for the country.”

“The fiscal consolidation measures introduced by the government including a freeze on purchase of vehicles and foreign travels are also helping to reduce government’s demand for Foreign Exchange and are boosting confidence in the economy. Government anticipates that soon, the situation will change for the better,” he said.

John Kumah disowns fake soldier who claims to be his brother [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/john-kumah-disowns-fake-soldier-who-claims-to-be-his-brother-video/ Sat, 30 Jul 2022 15:11:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2143614 Ejisu Member of Parliament (MP), John Kumah, says he does not have any relation to a fake soldier arrested over a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment scam.

According to him, his attention had been drawn to a viral video in which the suspect at the time of arrest claimed to be his brother.

However, in a post on his Facebook page which had the video attached, Mr Kumah, who doubles as a Deputy Finance Minister, indicated they are not in any way related.

“I do not know the said gentleman, never met him before and have not assigned him to execute any assignment in my name,” part of the post read.

Against this backdrop, he has called on the Ghana Armed Forces to investigate the gentleman and take the necessary punitive measures against him if he is found culpable.

Mr Kumah also appealed to the Ghana Police Service, the Cyber Security Authority and allied security services to make a strong intervention to reduce the increasing rate of impersonation and fraud that are being committed in the name of political actors.

He has further urged the general public to be extra vigilant when dealing with people who claim to be acting on the authority of a public figure and when dealing with social media accounts they believe belong to political figures.

Finance Ministry is not running away from accountability – John Kumah https://www.adomonline.com/finance-ministry-is-not-running-away-from-accountability-john-kumah/ Thu, 23 Jun 2022 07:35:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2129741 Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, says the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, is not running away from accounting for the Covid-19 expenditure.

According to him, the Finance Minister had provided full disclosure on the use of the Covid-19 funds while addressing Parliament Wednesday, June 22, and there was nothing to hide.

The Finance Minister had earlier debunked claims that government has not been transparent about its Covid-19 expenditure.

He said all programmed, mobilised, and utilised funds pertaining to the coronavirus pandemic have been duly reported in line with the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency.

Ken Ofori-Atta, revealed that a total of ¢12.04 billion has been expended so far on Covid-19.

However, in his account to Parliament, he had excluded funds from the National Covid-19 Trust Fund and the Ghana Private Sector Covid-19 Fund.

Speaking on PM Express, John Kumah explained that the Minister omission of those funds from his report to Parliament did not contravene the law as members of the Minority side were alluding to.

He explained that the exclusion of those funds was justified by the fact that they did not go through the channel of the Consolidated Fund and thus were not allocated or appropriated by the Finance Minister.

“There’s nothing inconsistent about what the Minister said here and what the constitution is providing especially when it is to do with Consolidated fund. Now the Minister is saying I’m accounting for funds that have come through the Consolidated fund,” he said.

He stated that those responsible for accounting for those funds were the board of trustees that managed the accounts the funds were channeled into.

“There’s a board of trustees who manage that in different accounts. The funds don’t go through the consolidated funds for the Finance Minister to allocate or disburse. If you have set up a fund that has board of trustees and they have a different method of receipts of revenue and expenditures, that accounting can be done through that board, it doesn’t have to go through the Finance Minister.

“So he says that in this accounting of funds that I am doing I have excluded them. That’s complete disclosure, so I don’t see the difficulty in it. The trustees can come and do that accounting. And today, the Speaker directed two committees, finance and health to go into this and give us the update.

“It has not come through the channel of consolidated fund, so it hasn’t gone through his appropriation so he’s not accounting for it,” he explained.

“Finance Ministry has not received any funds from the private Covid-19 funds to account for at this point. So we can allow the managers and trustees to come and account for how much they have received and how much they have expended it,” he stressed.

John Kumah reacts to 50 Immigration Service slots for constituents https://www.adomonline.com/john-kumah-reacts-to-50-immigration-service-slots-for-constituents/ Tue, 14 Jun 2022 10:16:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2126006 Ejisu Member of Parliament (MP), John Kumah has denied claims he secured 50 slots in the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for constituents.

According to the MP who doubles as a Deputy Finance Minister, the reports are negative spin and propaganda been placed on a group of newly recruited immigration officers who visited the constituency.

In a statement released by him, he explained that the said officers were at the Ejisu Solution Centre which has been set up to tackle unemployment in the area to show their appreciation for the support they received ahead of their recruitment.

The statement stressed that the immigration officers were not up to 50 and some of them are from Assin Fosu, Berekum, Kwame Danso and other places.

“In Ejisu, we have set up a 24/7 solution centre that is designed to prepare and support job applicants who need assistance to prepare for any job opening of their choice.

Ejisu MP, John Kumah in a group photograph with the immigration officers and others.

E-Levy: Use your brains – John Kumah clashes with Sam George over tithe https://www.adomonline.com/e-levy-use-your-brains-john-kumah-clashes-with-sam-george-over-tithe/ Tue, 03 May 2022 17:59:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2110903 As Ghanaians struggle to come to terms with the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), many have questioned whether there will ever be a consensus between government and the opposition over its need.

On May 1, the government went ahead with the implementation of the 1.50% tax on electronic transactions, which has been met with a myriad of fierce criticisms over illegitimate deductions, while others describe it as outrightly insensitive.

However, the discourse has taken a rather ugly turn on Twitter when two legislators engaged in a heated exchange over some exemptions in the E-Levy law.

This acrimony between both sides was glaring from the jump.

But the latest incident was caused by a comment by the Telecommunications Chamber CEO, Kenneth Ashigbe, who asserted on Joy FM that the deductions affected some transactions including the payment of church tithes.

Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam George, who had been of firm opposition to the initiative, felt he had been vindicated by this comment.

In a tweet, he told Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, that “square pegs have no place in round holes.”

“When we are talking IT deployment, kindly do us a favour and keep quiet. You make more sense that way,” he wrote on Monday night.

But the Deputy Finance Minister would have none of that as tempers continued to flare.

In a sharp rebuttal, he took on the NDC MP, saying “you have brains, use them.”

“Whether E-levy affects tithe, or not is not an issue of IT deployment, it is common sense.”

He further argued that Mr George was deliberately peddling falsehood “because we are not taxing people for paying tithe, offering and Zakat.”

“We are taxing people for using an online platform and if in the course of paying their tithe, they are taxed for using a platform, you can’t ignorantly say one is taxing tithe, offering and Zakat. Again, most Faith Based Organizations make use of merchant momo numbers, which are exempted from the E-levy, which you know; so, why this hypocrisy from you?”

All these he believes smack of unpatriotism on the part of Sam George.

But the NDC MP would still not take this lying. He returned on Tuesday morning with a scathing jibe at the Mr Kumah saying; “I do have brains. I also do use it.”

“You claimed in a very bellicose manner that tithes wouldn’t be affected by e-Levy & that I lied. Now the Chamber say you lied! Which IT community? The rented one which got exposed yesterday? Now please do you have a brain?” he quizzed.

It is public knowledge that Sam George is a worshiper with the Perez Chapel. The Deputy Finance Minister used this place of worship as an analogy in drumming home his apprehension of what he sees as the former’s grand scheme to court disaffection towards the government.

In a fresh response, he told Mr George that “should you decide to pay your tithe, you will use their momo number(ID 443765) which is a merchant number.”

“So E-levy won’t apply. Yet again, you have refused to use your brains and remains unrepented in your desire to always tell lies.”

But Sam George insists that the Deputy Minister is not abreast of the issues in the Minister which he assists to supervise.

“Does having a Merchant number exempt one from the e-Levy? No! And you are supposed to be the Deputy Minister of Finance? The Merchant must be tax compliant before an exemption applies. PCI is supposed to be tax exempt. Learn!” he replied in another tweet.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has indicated that the E-Levy first month of the tax will be mobilized in a modified-phased approach.

Below is a breakdown of how it will be implemented.

E-levy will not affect tithes and offering – John Kumah https://www.adomonline.com/e-levy-will-not-affect-tithes-and-offering-john-kumah/ Fri, 29 Apr 2022 16:36:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2110129

The Deputy Finance Minister, Dr John Kumah, has denied the assertion that payment of tithes and other religious obligations will be affected by the Electronic Transaction levy (E-levy).

Dr John Kumah on Friday said government is not taxing the tithes and offering of religious persons in the country.

“It is a complete lie and falsehood that E-levy will tax tithe and offerings. E-levy does not affect Church’s tithe and offering or Zakat,” he said.

Dr. Kumah comment is in reaction to claims by the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George that E-levy will affect tithes.

But the Deputy Minister in an interview on Joy Prime’s AM show said if churches register as merchants, there is no way payment to that platform will be exempted.

“If you decide to pay your tithe of GH¢2000, exactly GH¢2000 will go to the church” he explained.

Dr John Kumah, therefore, entreated the public to disregard claims that the levy would affect tithes and offerings.

700k public servants absorb 52% of our revenues – Deputy Finance Minister https://www.adomonline.com/700k-public-servants-absorb-52-of-our-revenues-deputy-finance-minister/ Sat, 23 Apr 2022 17:12:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2108115 Deputy Finance Minister Dr John Ampontuah Kumah has disclosed that 700,000 Ghanaian workers absorb 52 per cent of the country’s revenue.

According to him, out of the 13.5 million public servants, 700,000 are receiving a huge chunk of the revenue, yet he said they are complaining that it is woefully inadequate.

His comment follows the Trades Union Congress (TUC) urging government to review the public sector pay to mitigate the effects of increased prices of goods and services on workers.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Mr Kumah decried the demands of the labour unions.

700k public servants absorb 52% of our revenues - Deputy Finance Minister
Dr John Kumah

“How fair is that 700,000 of our people are getting over 52 % of our country’s revenues?” he questioned.

Again, comparing the remuneration of Article 71 office holders to that of the other workers who take 52% of the country’s revenue, he noted those in that category do not earn much since their salary is 0.05 per cent.

In this regard, the Ejisu MP is calling for a review of the salary structure of the country.

“Obviously, if you look at the salary structure of the country, we all as a country have gotten to a point where we have to see reforms and the details of how monies this 30 billion we are talking about is disbursed – who gets what…,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of Labour Research and Policy at the Trades Union Congress, Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, is calling on government to restore labour unions to the level of pay eroded by rising prices.

He added that “this is the least government can do” for civil servants.

Dr Otoo also disagreed with calls for workers to make sacrifices by annulling some allowances and accepting wage reductions amid the economic hardships.

According to him, with all the economic difficulties experienced, the labour sector has been the hardest hit, with a decline in wage income by about 30 per cent in the last two years.

He stated that public sector workers have already sacrificed much to accept the 4% increase in wages in 2021 and a 7% increment in 2022, while the inflation rate has gone up for the past two years.
