He stressed that measured critique is crucial to maintaining the dignity of these democratic bodies.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s call comes in the wake of a contentious Supreme Court ruling, which declared Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant as unconstitutional.

The ruling has sparked intense debate, dividing opinions across the political spectrum and among the general public.

During a media interaction on Sunday, November 17, the former President emphasised the importance of showing respect for Ghana’s democratic institutions.

He noted that these bodies play a vital role in safeguarding the nation’s constitutional framework and ensuring long-term stability.

Mr Kufuor reminded the public that while it is natural to have differing views on judicial decisions, it is essential to maintain a respectful tone.

He highlighted that the strength of Ghana’s democracy relies on the public’s continued faith in its institutions, even amidst disagreements.

“We talk of checks and balances. Some also say separation of powers, and I subscribe to that. Even though we are in different institutions, if yours is not going well, I should be able to tell you to prevent the excesses. However, I urge caution and thoughtfulness regarding some of the criticisms being raised.”

“In the Fourth Republic, the constitution is supreme, and the same constitution empowers the Supreme Court with interpretative authority. Once the court delivers a ruling, it must be respected.

“But it is important to note that the court does not actively seek cases; rather, individuals bring matters before it,” he stated.

Anti-galamsey protesters must face the law, but we must solve menace – Kufuor https://www.adomonline.com/anti-galamsey-protesters-must-face-the-law-but-we-must-solve-menace-kufuor/ Wed, 09 Oct 2024 15:16:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2458662 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called for justice to be served on the #StopGalamsey demonstrators who allegedly committed some breaches during their recent protest.

However, he emphasized the need to find a lasting solution to the menace of illegal mining, which has been a major concern for the government and citizens alike.

Former President Kufuor’s call for justice comes after a recent incident in which a group of demonstrators allegedly blocked major roads among other offences.

The Police arrested 53 protestors and detained them for two weeks, with 52 granted bail.

Speaking to Accra-based Angel FM, former President Kufuor said while the demonstrators had the right to protest, their actions were unacceptable and must be addressed by the law.

“If you attack a police officer or take away their car key, you must face the law or be punished. We can’t let them go scot-free,” he said.

President Kufuor also acknowledged that the issue of illegal mining is a complex one that requires a multifaceted approach.

“We must find a solution to this menace that affects not only the environment but also the livelihoods of many Ghanaians. We need to work together to find a way to stop the destruction of our natural resources and ensure that our environment is protected for future generations” he said.

The former President’s comments come as the government has been under pressure from citizens and labour unions to address the issue of galamsey, which has been linked to widespread environmental degradation, water pollution, and health problems.

The #StopGalamsey protestors, who have been gaining momentum in recent months, have been calling for the government to take stronger action to stop illegal mining activities.

What Kufuor told Okoe-Boye at late wife’s one week observation https://www.adomonline.com/what-kufuor-told-okoe-boye-at-late-wifes-one-week-observation/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 19:21:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2310989 The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye, has opened up about political nuggets former President John Kufuor shared with him.

According to Dr Okoe-Boye, this was during a conversation with the statesman when he visited his Peduase residence to mourn with him at the one-week celebration of his late wife, Theresa Ab Kufuor, on October 11, 2023.

“I deliberately went for the one-week in the evening because I wanted to have him time and talk with him, so I got to his residence around 5 to 6 when most sympathisers were leaving.

“Former President Kufuor asked me how things were going in the constituency, and I told him we were doing our best,” he stated.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme , the former Ledzokuku Member of Parliament, revealed that, their conversation was on honesty and transparency in a politician’s bid to succeed.

“He told me to let the people know who you are so that even if someone pays 10 times more than you in an election, they will still give it to you because they know what you stand for,” he said.

Dr Okoe-Boye emphasised that, the statement of the former President proves that money is not all when it comes to politics.

He cited how people paid money for political positions but were not voted for to buttress his point.

The former Deputy Health Minister is seeking to contest the Ledzokuku seat again after losing in the seat to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 election.
