Former President, John Agyekum Kufuor has lauded the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer is the true man destined to lead Ghana through his bold and clear visions.

Speaking at the launch of Dr. Bawumia’s vision for the country, the former President recollected his first meeting with the Vice President which has left an unforgettable mark in his memories.

“I have always seen him as a man of destiny. I first saw him in London in 2002, he was the research assistant to the governor of the central bank. He delivered an exceptional paper among the giants of London in the financial world. Before then I had never spoken to him, I sent someone to call and I told him to carry on because he would go far. In 2008, Akufo-Addo coincidentally picked him as his running mate so I appealed to the party to accept him,” he recalled.

Mr. Kufuor also appealed to Ghanaians to give Dr. Bawumia the chance to rule the country in the upcoming elections.

He says the Vice President possesses all vital qualities to change the course of the country through his digitalization agenda.

“This man is on a mission determined by destiny so please let’s all accept him. Quality is very scared and Bawumia has all the instruments to become president. His hallmark is humility and has the requisite temperance needed to rule the country,” he said.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will unveil his vision for the nation today in a much-awaited address at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra.

Akufo-Addo is the best president NPP has produced – Asenso-Boakye https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-is-the-best-president-npp-has-produced-asenso-boakye/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 06:48:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2350717 Bantama Member of Parliament (MP), Francis Asenso-Boakye, has said he will choose Nana Akufo-Addo over John Kufour as the best President the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has ever produced.

The duo according to him have their own unique leadership qualities.

“The decisions and circumstances under their leadership are totally different. I will choose Akufo-Addo any day. I worked with him directly, I know him and have benefitted from his counsel but Kufour is also more of a father to me,” he stated.

However, the Works and Housing Minister says he believes Ghanaians couldn’t have had a better President at this time under the leadership of Akufo-Addo.

Citing the global covid-19 pandemic which brought world economies to its knees, Mr Asenso-Boakye said Akufo-Addo showed excellent leadership.

”He has been amazing. We couldn’t have had a better president at this time. Especially during the difficult period of COVID, I was right  by him and the kind of leadership that he provided. Things could have been worse if we didn’t have Akufo-Addo as President at that time, even times that he had to make decisions to shut the country on lock down.

”Akufo-Addo, I believe that apart from programmes and policies he put in place, the kind of leadership he provided I believe no other president could do better,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Starr FM.

In this regard, the Minister said he would score Akufo-Addo 9 out of 10 with his management of the economy.

He expressed strong confidence Akufo-Addo in the next ten years will be celebrated for the policies and programmes he rolled out especially the Free Senior High School (SHS).

How ex-President Kufuor killed Alan’s presidential ambition – Joseph Yamin https://www.adomonline.com/how-ex-president-kufuor-killed-alans-presidential-ambition-joseph-yamin/ Tue, 26 Sep 2023 12:12:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2298378 National Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has blamed former President John Agyekum Kufour for the political woes of former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen.

Joseph Yamin claimed the moment Mr. Kufuor named Alan as his right-hand man, his presidential ambition became a threat to many.

“The moment ex-President Kufour made him [Alan] a Minister, he became a threat to Akufo-Addo. Interestingly, he never helped Alan. He was never bold to back Alan just like Akufo-Addo is doing for Bawumia now” the NDC man said in an interview on Adom FM‘s morning show Dwaso Nsem Tuesday.

Reacting to Mr. Kyerematen’s resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Yamin said it was long overdue.

According to him, Alan Kyerematen should have resigned long before he accepted to be a Cabinet Minister in Akufo-Addo’s government.

“Alan Kyerematen should have resigned long ago. I am shocked he stayed till now” he said.

Mr. Yamin was also skeptical about Alan’s ambition to become a third force in Ghana politics.

“He [Alan] should have known politically that it was over for him. It was clear from the beginning that when Akufo-Addo became the flagbearer and contested again that is where it ended. If he wanted to be a third force, he should have started what he is doing now long ago” the NDC man stressed.

Mr. Yamin stated categorically that, people may sympathise with Alan, but they will not vote for him.

I have not endorsed any flagbearer hopeful – Kufuor https://www.adomonline.com/i-have-not-endorsed-any-flagbearer-hopeful-kufuor/ Thu, 23 Jun 2022 12:31:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2129885 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has dismissed reports suggesting his endorsement of a candidate as the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.

The office of the former President has stated media reportage suggesting he has endorsed Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy, against the other aspiring candidates is misconstrued.

This comes on the back of a Fathers’ Day soiree held at the Peduase Valley Resort where both personalities were present.

President Kufuor, during the event, spoke highly of Dr Bawumia and said he has always been close to the latter and treated him like a true son.

But a press statement signed by Senior Aide & Spokesman for Mr Kufuor, Dr Kwabena Osei-Adubofour, explained there was nothing political about his remarks or even the occasion.

“President Kufuor wants people to know that the other much-talked-about prospective NPP flagbearership candidates like John Alan Kyerematen, Boakye Agyarko, Joe Ghartey and Dr Owusu Afrivie Akoto all have close relationships with him.

“Of course, Dr Akoto is his younger brother. The former President believes that any of those mentioned, when selected by the party to be the flagbearer, would be able to discharge the work of the flagbearer very firmly and effectively,” the statement read.

It added: “In the upcoming NPP flagbearership race, in order to achieve party unity and sustain it thereafter for victory of the party in the 2024 elections, what President Kufuor expects from the party and political hierarchies are fair and un-engineered systems and processes that would lead to a fair selection of our next NPP flagbearer.”

The statement cautioned the process should be devoid of coercion and machinations so that the eventual selected nominee will come out of the uncompromised free will of the voting.

“Delegates can easily command the support and respect of all party faithful, and indeed, other Ghanaians sympathetic to our cause, towards breaking the eight,” it admonished.

Bawumia is my son – Kufuor declares amid powerful prayer for him [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-is-my-son-kufuor-declares-amid-powerful-prayer-for-him-audio/ Mon, 20 Jun 2022 15:53:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2128310

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has opened up on his relationship with Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia which he says goes way back.

“Let me single out one person, he is also a father but I can claim that he happens to be my son too and that’s the Vice President sitting right by me,” he said.

According to him, the Vice President is like a true son who has remained loyal to him over the years.

“Sheer coincidence but you may not know that I started being a father in 1963 and that happen to be the year the Vice President was born. My son whose birthday falls in September that year could not make it to this event but on October 7 this guy here popped out and then we’ve related so beautifully.

“It’s not just for this occasion but once I noticed him, he became like a son. He is a true son, very loyal,” he eulogised.

The former President made this pronouncement as Dr Bawumia and his wife, Samira among others joined him at his Peduase lodge residence on Sunday for a Fathers’ Day event.

He touted Dr Bawumia’s presence at the event as touching as they weren’t even sure he was going to make it since he was in the North at the time of the invite.

“In your narration, you said when the planners decided to invite the Vice President, you learnt he had gone to the North for some duties and you even doubted whether he will manage to come.

“But you phoned him and with his signature giggling he said if it’s J.A. Kufuor I’m coming. That’s so touching, very touching but probably that is how a son should behave towards a father,” he added.

In his closing remarks, President Kufuor offered a prayer for the veep, declaring “I pray for the Vice President, May God bless him.”

Why I deserted Kufour – Dr Nyaho Tamakloe explains [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-deserted-kufour-dr-nyaho-tamakloe-explains-audio/ Wed, 27 Apr 2022 10:06:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2108917

I was very close to Akufo-Addo, I took a lot of risks on his behalf, he knows it. Because of Akufo-Addo, I deserted Kufour on principle, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has said.

The decision according to the diplomat was a time the NPP needed a formidable person to become a flagbearer in the build-up to the 2000 general elections.

“After Kufuor was unable to unseat Rawlings democratically, we thought that it should be somebody else.

“In fact, some of us had our minds on Kwame Pianim — another good leader — but unfortunately, because he wanted to unseat the military regime, even though he served over ten years in prison, he was not allowed to contest an election as a leader,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Metro TV.

Following the development, Dr Tamakloe said he decided to go all out for Akufo-Addo to lead the NPP.

The Board member of Accra Hearts of Oak disclosed this as he opened up on his relationship with President Akufo-Addo who he indicated was vibrant at the time, hence they thought would be a good successor.

“So, some of us decided that ok Akufo-Addo was then very vibrant and we thought he was very strong and he can speak truth to power, so, we followed him.

“We had an election in Sunyani where Kufuor, Akufo-Addo, and others were the main contestants but Kufuor won hands down. I was on the committee that was managing the affairs of Akufo-Addo; headed by Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, Yaw Osafo Maafo was part,” he recounted.

He also revealed on the same show that his siblings were from four men whom his late mother got married to.

Mr Kufuor said the first born is now a 97-year-old woman who got married to Nana Prempeh II, a former chief of the Ashanti kingdom whose lineage led to the birth of Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

He noted the second born is Professor Kufuor, who was a chemistry Professor at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the third, Gloria Doodu, who bore former Pro-Vice Chancellor of UG, Prof Doodu.

Others include; the late Kofi Boakye, Marian Kufuor, a former State Attorney and one of the first two lawyers in the Ashanti region and Cecilia Campell who passed recently.

Mr Kufuor took Ghanaians down this memory lane of his life while describing his mother as the biggest politician he has ever known.

He added his mum met his dad four years later and gave birth to three boys including himself with Nana Fosu Gyeabour, a chief of Bechem, her fourth husband out of which two children were born.

Despite the different fathers, he added they have remained united till date and have carried on the name Kufuor which was even their mother’s surname with Agyekum their father’s.

The former President, who took Ghanaians down the memory lane in an interview with Afia Amankwaah Tamakloe on Adom TV’s M’ahyase3 show, revealed the greatest pain he had to endure 13 years after leaving  office.

According to him, his numerous appointments in various international institutions were what helped him to overcome the pain and move on with his life.

Meanwhile, he has urged the party to always go for what the people want with regards to aspirants and also go by its constitution which he believes will help it retain power for long.

Best performing president of the Fourth Republic https://www.adomonline.com/best-performing-president-of-the-fourth-republic/ Fri, 07 Aug 2020 15:49:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1837044 Ghana first became a Republic in 1960 with Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah as its first president, after his six-year reign as the Head of State and government, but the ever charismatic Nkrumah was overthrown by Lieutenant-General Joseph Arthur Ankrah.

Moving forward, the newly birthed nation called Ghana would go on to experience three more interruptions in its constitutional rule as a result of coup d’etats.

Both Ghana’s Second and Third Republics; 1972-1979 and 1979-1981 respectively, were short-lived.

But unlike the First, Second and Third Republics, the Fourth Republic has seen tremendous socio-economic development (excluding the First Republic) and an incredible level of political stability.

Without an iota of doubt, Ghanaians can attest to the fact that Dr Nkrumah is solely responsible for the massive infrastructural and industrialisation of the country as he was the sole President for the First Republic.

The story, however, becomes a bit different in the Fourth Republic as due to the successful transfer of power from one government to another, it becomes difficult to tell exactly which president or government has done better than the other.

Not that it really matters, because governance in itself is a continuous progress, but politicians mainly of the two dominant political parties – the New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress – on almost every platform argue of having performed better than the other. And it is on the back of this ‘I have done better than you and what would your president be remembered for’ continuous debate that I have written this piece and with your (reader) help, ascertain if indeed a president or government in the Fourth Republic has done better than another and if so which president or government is it or if it’s just mere propaganda by the two main political parties.

In my assessment of which president or government has performed better than the other, the construction of roads, hospitals, schools and so on would not be considered, as such infrastructural provisions form the basic responsibilities of every government and so will not count as part of a president’s or government’s achievements.

In this piece, the main criteria to be used in adjudging a president or government of having performed better than the other is based on the implementation of a decision, policy, initiative or project that has/have over the years and despite the changes in government has/have still been beneficial to majority or the entire Ghanaian populace and for which the said president of the Fourth Republic will be ‘remembered’ for.

Jerry John Rawlings

Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, through two successive coup attempts, became the de facto leader of Ghana from 1981 to 1993. After returning the country to constitutional rule in 1992, Mr Rawlings was elected twice as the president of the Fourth Republic.

Mr Rawlings in his 20 years as expected of any president furthered the transformation of the education, health, transport, telecommunication and energy sectors among others.

But notable among all his achievements as the President of Ghana was the return of Ghana to democratic rule, the liberalisation of the airwaves and television station ownership and allowance of opposition newspapers.

The introduction and implementation of the decentralisation system of governance leading to the birth of local governance in the form of the district assemblies and its mother ministry- the Ministry for Local Governance and Rural Development.

John Agyekum Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor is the second president of the Fourth Republic. He ruled from 2001 to 2009 and just as his predecessor, he further deepened the strides made by previous governments in the area of infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, gender equality and anti-corruption among others.

But notable among his numerous achievements were the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme to replace the then cash-and-carry system, the school feeding programme, the introduction and launch of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre Programme and Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme.

Professor John Evans Atta Mills

The late Prof Evans Mills led the country from 2009 to 2012. His tenure saw Ghana become the fastest growing economy recording some 20.05% for the first half of the year and 14.4% at the end of the financial year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Prof Mills, aside prudent management of the economy performed tremendously well in the areas of education, health, agriculture, energy and rural development.

His biggest accomplishment will be the introduction of the Single Spine Salary Structure as well as the establishment of the Ghana Revenue Authority which integrated Value Added Tax, Customs Excise and Preventive Service and Internal Revenue Service to improve the efficiency in revenue collection for the country.

John Dramani Mahama

Former President John Mahama, the Fourth President of the Fourth Republic took over the presidency after the demise of his predecessor Prof Evans Mills.

Earlier in this report, it was stated that projects undertaken in the areas of education, road, health among others will not be accounted as part of the achievements of presidents of the fourth republic.

But, Mr Mahama’s proven record in infrastructural projects across the country forces me to make an exception, because unlike the presidents of the Fourth Republic, it can be said that Mr Mahama’s main goal was to ensure that Ghana was not in any way lacking when it came to the country’s infrastructural needs.

His quest to solve the infrastructural inadequacy of the country can be seen with the rapid erection of ultra-modern health facilities, roads, etc around the country.

Arguably, it can be said that Mr Mahama has outdone any other president of the Fourth Republic in terms of infrastructural provisions, making it his greatest strength.

Williams Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo is the incumbent President of the Fourth Republic and has served as president of the Fourth Republic from 2016 to date.

Unlike the four presidents of the Fourth Republic, little can be said for President Nana Akufo-Addo when it comes to infrastructural projects. Efforts made by the president in this area is not very appreciable.

Despite not making tremendous strides in the area of infrastructure, there are, however, some outstanding achievements of President Akufo-Addo.

Notable among his achievements are the Free Senior High School policy and the One-District One-Factory initiatives.

Give your Verdict

So who do you think is the best performing president of the Fourth Republic?

Is it former President Rawlings who brought Ghana out of military rule to a democratic one and introduced decentralisation governance?

Or is it former President John Agyekum Kufuor who introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme, Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty and the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre to support micro-businesses?

Probably, you think the late Prof Evans Mills has outperformed the two previous presidents of the Fourth Republic with record-making economic growth.

What about former President Mahama who made it his sole mission to resolve the infrastructural deficits of the country, building roads, interchanges, hospitals, etc across the breadth and length of the nation.

Or do you think it’s the incumbent president, Nana Akufo-Addo who has provided for students of all second-cycle institutions in the country free education as well as seeking to industrialise the country through the 1D1F policy.

What do you think? Who to you is the best performing president of the Fourth Republic?
