Born in Antwerp to Ghanaian parents, the 21-year-old began his international career with Belgium’s youth teams, from U-15 to U-21 levels.

Although the Ghana Football Association (GFA) were hoping to lure him but Doku opted for Belgium’s senior team, making his debut in a UEFA Nations League match against Denmark in September 2020.

He later featured for Belgium in Euro 2020, accumulating 20 appearances and two goals for the European nation.

When asked about his Ghanaian roots, Doku acknowledged his parents’ origins and mentioned his ability to speak Twi, a language spoken in Ghana.

“Of course, I’m Ghanaian because my parents are Ghanaians. I also speak Twi, which is a language in Ghana. I’ve been there once, and I’ll have to go back there again because it was a long time ago,” Doku stated on the In The Premier League Chair show.

Doku joined Manchester City from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes last summer and has enjoyed a solid season under Pep Guardiola.

The dynamic attacker has contributed five goals and eight assists for the club so far.

PL: Jeremy Doku shines as Man City thrash Bournemouth to go top https://www.adomonline.com/pl-jeremy-doku-shines-as-man-city-thrash-bournemouth-to-go-top/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 17:46:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2314766 Jeremy Doku scored one goal and was instrumental in four more as Manchester City made light of Erling Haaland’s injury to record their biggest win of the season against struggling Bournemouth and go top of the Premier League.

Bernardo Silva twice profited from inspired passes from the Belgium international, who is vying with Jack Grealish for City’s left-sided attacking berth. Phil Foden was also on target before Nathan Ake’s 88th-minute diving header.

Doku, a £55.4m summer signing from Rennes, was too much for Andoni Iraola’s side, scoring the first of three goals in seven minutes after Bournemouth had kept their opponents at bay for half an hour.

He jinked his way to the byeline to create space for the cut-back that allowed Bernardo to covert his second goal of the season, before providing the inspired through ball that offered the brilliant Portuguese the opportunity to chip Andrei Radu.

Doku’s shot deflected in off Manuel Akanji for the third and he also provided the superb through ball for Foden to score City’s fourth 19 minutes into the second half.

Foden had been introduced at the break for Haaland, who seemed to be struggling with a leg muscle problem as the opening period drew to a close.

Luis Sinisterra pulled one back for Bournemouth, who will drop into the relegation places if Luton avoid defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

PL: Man City come from behind to beat West Ham https://www.adomonline.com/pl-man-city-come-from-behind-to-beat-west-ham/ Sat, 16 Sep 2023 19:20:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2294956 Second-half goals from Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland helped Manchester City come from behind to beat in-form West Ham and continue their winning start to the Premier League season.

James Ward-Prowse’s diving header gave the Hammers the lead against the run of play, but Doku’s first City goal restored parity 43 seconds after the interval.

Silva then collected Julian Alvarez’s looping ball over the top of the West Ham defence before calmly prodding past the onrushing Alphonse Areola.

Haaland, who had squandered several opportunities, extended City’s lead with a trademark finish.

City restore their two-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the table after Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Wolves in the early kick-off, while West Ham drop to sixth.

Jeremy Doku joins Manchester City on a five year deal from Stade Rennes https://www.adomonline.com/jeremy-doku-joins-manchester-city-on-a-five-year-deal-from-stade-rennes/ Fri, 25 Aug 2023 12:57:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2286975 Manchester City have completed the signing of Belgium winger from Rennes for £55.4m.

Last season’s Treble winners have agree a five-year contract with the 21-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 75 Ligue 1 appearances across three seasons.

Doku, who has 16 caps for Belgium, has taken the number 11 shirt.

“This is a great day for me, both personally and professionally. City are the best team in world football, so joining them is special,” Doku said.

Doku becomes Pep Guardiola’s third summer signing after midfielder Mateo Kovacic arrived for £25m from Chelsea and defender former RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol joined for £77m.

West Ham, Tottenham and Chelsea had also been interested in signing Doku, who scored seven goals in 35 games last season.

Doku had two years left on the five-year deal he signed when Rennes paid 26m euros (£22.3m) to sign him from Anderlecht in October 2020, shortly after he made his international debut as a teenager.

Doku cited the opportunity to work under City boss Guardiola as a key factor in his decision to join the Premier League champions.

“I am a young player with so much learning and improving to do,” added the Antwerp-born winger.

“Working with Pep and his staff, and playing alongside these world-class players, will make me a much better player. I feel sure of that.

“Watching City last season was amazing. To win the Treble is the hardest thing in football and they did it. You cannot imagine how exciting it is to be joining this team. I cannot wait to get started. Hopefully, I can make the fans happy.”

City’s director of Football Txiki Begiristain has tipped Doku to develop into a “world-class” attacking player under Guardiola’s guidance.

He added: “Jeremy is a very exciting young player and I’m so pleased he’s joining us.

“In terms of raw attributes, he has everything a winger needs. He has outstanding pace and he is exceptional in one-on-one situations.

“I honestly believe working with Pep and the technical staff here at City will see him develop into a world-class attacking talent.”
