According to a statement issued by the Office of the Vice President, she made the reaffirmation in her remarks at the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) Awards Night.

Vice President Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the businesses recognised at the event, noting that they exemplify the innovation and resilience needed to drive Ghana’s next phase of growth.

She explained that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government is focused on unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.

Highlighting key initiatives, she said policies such as the 24-Hour Economy were designed to encourage industries to operate in shifts around the clock, thereby enhancing productivity, competitiveness, and job creation.

The Vice President also noted that the Feed Ghana Programme is boosting agricultural output to support food security and provide raw materials for local processing.

“We urge our industries to take full advantage of these initiatives, especially as government prioritises value addition. We are creating an environment that opens new opportunities, decentralises operations, and expands capacity for sustainable growth,” she said.

Acknowledging the challenges confronting the industrial sector, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured that easing these constraints remains central to the government’s broader industrial strategy.

She affirmed that the government is ready to collaborate with industries to build a resilient and competitive industrial base for Ghana.

The Vice President congratulated all award winners and acknowledged other businesses making steady progress, emphasising that their work is helping to build a nation anchored on industrial strength. “Your contributions matter greatly, and Ghana is counting on you for her development,” she added.

Political analyst clarifies position on Prof Opoku-Agyemang and Central Region https://www.adomonline.com/political-analyst-clarifies-position-on-prof-opoku-agyemang-and-central-region/ Thu, 10 Dec 2020 19:06:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1892293 A political analyst and governance expert, says the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) could have turned around the party’s fortunes in the 2020 election.

His comments follow inaccurate reports attributed to him that suggested that the NDC being defeated in the 2020 elections was as a result of its decision to choose a lady as its Vice Presidential candidate.

“I think the experiment of taking a woman Vice Presidential candidate was something that did not work for the former President John Dramani Mahama,” he was wrongly quoted as saying when he granted an interview with GBC radio.

Frederick Agyarko Oduro clarified that Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as an indigene of the Central Region could have swung the region for the party.

This, Mr Oduro believes, could have shot up the party’s performance than it did in the 2020 polls.

He said if nothing at all, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang could have helped to win the Komenda area where she comes from.

Mr Oduro, however, applauded former President John Mahama over his exploits in the Greater Accra Region.

Jane Naana breaks silence on ‘Working with Rawlings’ foreword https://www.adomonline.com/jane-naana-breaks-silence-on-working-with-rawlings-foreword/ Tue, 13 Oct 2020 15:45:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1866373 Running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof Jane Naana Opoku- Agyemang, has expressed shock at the reactions her foreword in ‘working with Rawlings’ book garnered.

The book, written by Professor Kwamena Ahwoi, sought to catalogue events that took place in the NDC from its PNDC days with Jerry John Rawlings being the leader.

Prof Opoku- Agyemang was heavily criticised for subtly endorsing the content of the controversial book, an act many pundits opined would have dire consequences for her.

But, speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV, she questioned the reactions, noting that, that was not her first foreword.

“This is not the first foreword I have written in my life but this is the foreword that received this reaction.

“A foreword is not a critique; it is not an introduction, not an analysis. When you are doing those kinds of assignments, there are different ways you go about them,” she said.

To her, the foreword was just to introduce the essence of the book.

Meanwhile, the book has come under serious scrutiny since its launch and the founder of the NDC, who happens to be the protagonist, has taken a serious view of some of its contents.

Many pundits have questioned the timing of the release of the book when in fact Mr Rawlings was seemingly being lured back to the NDC.

Mr Rawlings, and indeed some NDC stalwarts, have not taken kindly to its content, challenging some of the claims made.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful reacts to selection of NDC’s vice presidential candidate https://www.adomonline.com/ursula-owusu-ekuful-reacts-to-selection-of-ndcs-vice-presidential-candidate/ Tue, 07 Jul 2020 19:48:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1823221 Ghana’s Communications Minister and Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, who is a renowned gender advocate, has said that though she welcomes the selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman as the National DemocracticCongress’ (NDC) Vice Presidential Candidate for the 2020 elections, gender advocates cannot vouch for her contribution to the cause of women empowerment in the country.

She said many women across the political divide have for years fought tirelessly for women and children’s rights in this country and Prof. Opoku-Agyeman is not one of them.

“You can easily mention former First Lady of the Republic, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, and some others in the NDC as shining examples of female politicians who have contributed immensely to the advancement of women empowerment and inclusion in Ghana,” she said.

The former Vice President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers explained that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman’s record in public life would make it very difficult to rally the ‘female Constituency’ to support her bid.

MORE:

She mentioned that the NDC’s Vice Presidential Candidate was one of the notable women who signed the infamous ‘Montie three’ petition for the release of three NDC communicators who had threatened to ‘rape’ the then Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Wood.

“That episode is still fresh on the mind of every woman in this struggle. It was no mean a person than Ghana’s first female Chief Justice who had been attacked by the NDC and there was Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman rising in defense of her party youth who had been convicted for their barbaric actions,” Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said in an interview with OMAN FM.

The colourful event took place at the Celebration Center, Harare on Friday, October 26, coinciding with the University’s 14th graduation ceremony.

It attracted ministers of state, parliamentarians, vice chancellors, members of the diplomatic corps, partners and friends of the university, alumni, with graduating students, parents and guardians in attendance.

In her acceptance speech Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang thanked the Women’s University in Africa for bestowing such a distinctive honour on her, which she shares with all the communities of family, friends, colleagues, staff and students who are part of her life’s journey. She described the effect of the recognition as sobering, the invitation most unexpected.

She pledged to support the university in advancing the dreams of the two visionary founders- Professor Hope Sadza and Dr. Fay Chung, who took action to create a pathway for women to access higher education in many areas of importance to self and country.

She explained that the shifting terrain of higher education in Africa and the evolving economic order required that universities maintain a careful balance between knowledge and skills acquisition in curriculum review and delivery.

The congratulatory message from the University, read by the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, celebrated her ascension to the position of Chancellor.

“As your personal achievement and honour, the Board of the Women’s University in Africa, in nominating you, Professor Opoku-Agyemang, as the third Chancellor, “considered your vast contributions to education in your own country, Ghana; in Africa and the world over. You are a courageous woman, renowned researcher and scholar capable of repositioning WUA in its endeavour to prove its fitness of purpose in the context of globalized higher education and a Pan African university with world-wide footprint”.

He continued; “Chancellor, with your intellect and experience, I am confident that you are able to inspire and lead this great institution to sustained success. We pledge to work with and support you as you set a new direction and tone for the University. As you put WUA on a renewed path for the future, I wish you success together with the University Board, Council, Management team, and the entire university community.

“I therefore wish to thank you for accepting this nomination and the responsibility as the titular head of the Women’s University in Africa.

“Chancellor, I wish to, once again, congratulate you on your inauguration as the Chancellor of WUA, and recognise in advance the significance of the contribution you will make in this position to this University, to Zimbabwe and Africa at large. Makorokoto, Congratulations”

In an interview with zifmnews.com, Professor Opoku-Agyemang said she will continue to articulate the institution’s vision and translate it into action to ensure quality education for students.

Dr Fay Chung, co-founder of the University, said the institution was pleased to be encouraging the spirit of pan Africanism, diversity and African unity through appointing a Ghanaian chancellor coming after the previous Chancellor who was from Zambia

Chung said they always look for women who have excelled and have well known experience in the field.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang brings a lot of experience to the institution as she is currently the President of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) and chairperson of the Africa Board.

A professor of Literature, school of Humanities and Legal Studies at the University of Cape Coast, the Professor served as Minister for Education in Ghana from 2013 to 2017.
