The initiative, introduced by the University Relations Office (URO) in collaboration with the Quality Assurance and Planning Office (QAPO), began with the issuance of official ID cards to two popular campus cats, Kwasi Joe and Kofi Sam, who reside around the Main Administration enclave.

According to the University, the project aims to strengthen humane animal–campus relations, support environmental health, and celebrate KNUST’s distinctive cultural identity.

The cats, officially designated as “University Cats,” now have ID cards featuring their names, assigned campus locations, and care zones.

The initiative also includes a community-supported feeding and veterinary care programme coordinated by the URO and staff volunteers. It will be rolled out in phases across various parts of the campus to ensure proper health checks, feeding points, and awareness on positive human–animal interaction.

KNUST noted the important role campus cats play in pest control, promoting calm environments, and providing companionship to students and staff.
