“Earlier, three to four packets of condoms were sold daily. And now packs of condoms are disappearing from a store,” a shopkeeper of a medical store told the outlet.

When flavoured condoms are soaked in hot water, polyurethane from the condoms is released, resulting in a cocktail that can give off a high that lasts for 10 to 12 hours at a time, Vice reported.

Polyurethane is a plastic substance used in everyday materials such as building insulation, car parts, and adhesive, according to a polyurethane website.

Vice noted that the condoms are typically left to soak in water for six to eight hours before an individual would drink the water.

Dheeman Mandal, an employee at Durgapur Divisional Hospital, told News 18 that the process can be addicting.

“Condoms contain aromatic compounds. It breaks down to form alcohol. It is addictive. This aromatic compound is also found in dendrites glue. So many people use dendrite for addiction also,” Mandal told News 18.

Experts told Vice that consuming intoxicating flavored-condom water is not without consequence.

“Drinking this water can cause intoxication and addiction. If consumed repeatedly, it will negatively impact the lungs and kidneys, as well as harm the body’s nervous system,” Joydeep Ghosh, an internal medicine expert at Fortis Hospital, Kolkata, told Vice.

Sanjith Saseedharan, the lead of critical care at the SL Raheja Hospital in Mumbai, added in a conversation with Vice that “long-term use of this can lead to mental abnormalities, including violent behavior, unconsciousness, and [in certain cases] even death.”

This comes after the Manager, Snap Chavis Wayne, accused the ‘Kwaku The Traveller’ hitmaker of leaving him high and dry to sign a record deal with another label, Empire Entertainment, without his approval.

This allegation was made by one DJ Slim who accused Black Sherif of being an ingrate. DJ Slim alleged that the artiste had abandoned a seven-bedroom house, a car and other personal items his manager made available to him for his personal use.

In documents, the suit was filed on Monday, April 11, 2022.

In other documents, the former Manager, Snap, is seeking an injunction to be placed on Black Sherif, restricting him from playing at any event until the case has been resolved.

The defendant is also asking for an order to be placed on the funds the rapper has accrued through streaming and other revenue sources.

Again, he is seeking “an order for the appointment of a receiver to receive any and all funds that may accrue to the Defendant/Respondent from the use and exploitation of his music and image.”

The court is expected to hear the case for the injunction on Monday, May 9, 2022.

Black Sherif dragged to court by former manager

In February and early March, the fast-rising artiste faced public wrath after it was alleged that he signed a record deal with another label, Empire Entertainment, without the approval of his Management.

When the issue reached the court of public opinion, many people bashed the young musician for his actions. But, the current Manager of Black Sherif, Madonna, in an interview with ‘Da Don’ on Hitz FM, dismissed the claims.

He also revealed that the purported Manager who is accusing Black Sherif of leaving him, was only a financier who came on board after the release of ‘Second Sermon’.

Narcotics use highest in La Dade-Kotopon Municipality https://www.adomonline.com/narcotics-use-highest-la-dade-kotopon-municipality/ Wed, 28 Jun 2017 06:05:09 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=252121 The La Dade-Kotopon Municipality has been identified by the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) as having the highest prevalence rate of narcotics use in the Greater Accra Region.

This was confirmed at the Municipal Security Council meeting last week by security officers who identified 25 ghettos within the municipality where drug peddlers engage in drug-related activities.

“It also came to light there were on sale to the public ‘wee’ toffees, ‘wee’ biscuits, ‘wee’ chewing gums and many others. My major worry and concerns are that the target customers of the producers of these products are the youth,” the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Ms Gladys Mann-Dede, stated.

She said this yesterday at the Greater Accra Regional celebration of this year’s World Drug Day, which falls on June 26 every year.

The high rate of narcotics use in the La Dade-Kotopon Municipality, she said, informed the decision to organise the World Drug Day programme in the municipality, where a week-long programme, including a quiz and football gala, was organised to create awareness of the dangers of illicit drug use.

Ms Mann-Dede noted that the danger associated with the continuous production of narcotic-induced substances was that the youth patronised them without knowing the effect.

She said a recent report about the use of illicit drugs by the United Nations which cited Ghana among nations highly engaged in drug use could have a negative effect on the country’s image abroad.

Efforts

According to the MCE, the assembly would give much attention to fighting social challenges including the use of illicit drugs.

She said the assembly had started engaging stakeholders including the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, police, traditional authorities, religious bodies, non-governmental organisations and the media, to deal with the problem in its efforts to fight illicit drugs use.

Transit points

The Greater Accra Regional Commander of NACOB, Mr Roger Vanderpuye, said the 2016 World Drug Report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime named Ghana as the third country in Africa after Nigeria and South Africa among the top transit points for cocaine from South America en route to Europe and the US.

“The report again named Ghana as among the top four countries in Africa reported as the sources of cannabis herb to Europe,” he said and urged the country to take the appropriate steps to curb the menace.

He, therefore, called on Parliament to, as a matter of urgency, pass the NACOB Bill to give the board more powers to effectively do its work.

The Head of the Addictive Disease Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Mr Logosu Amegashie, urged the youth to stay away from drugs since they could destroy their lives.

Assin North records high teen pregnancies https://www.adomonline.com/assin-north-records-high-teen-pregnancies/ Wed, 10 May 2017 08:27:30 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=112271 The Assin North District has recorded 273 teenage pregnancies in the first quarter of 2017.

This represented an increase of 27 as against the 248 teenage pregnancies recorded around the same time in 2016.

Mrs Georgina Asiedu, District Director of Health Services, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said her outfit was poised to bring the menace to its lowest minimum.

“We are not happy with the outrageous number of teenage pregnancies so we would work assiduously with all stakeholders to bring it under control.”

She described the situation where teenagers expected to be in school had become “premature mothers” as worrying and posed danger to their health especially during child delivery.

According to her, in 2016, the District recorded nine maternal deaths and three of them were teenage mothers.
She advised teenagers especially females to remain chaste and disengage in acts that would derail their future ambitions.
Parents must not shirk their responsibilities but work tirelessly to provide the needs of their children to disallow unscrupulous persons from taking advantage of innocent girls.

There should be strong bonding and communication between parents and their children to afford them the opportunity to share their problems with them, she added.

Mrs Asiedu expressed the determination to establish Adolescent Reproductive Health Clubs in schools and Adolescent corners in communities where the prevalence rates were high to help reduce it drastically.

She called on stakeholders, particularly teachers and traditional rulers to form committees and institute bye-laws to arrest the canker.

Transport fares up by 15 percent https://www.adomonline.com/transport-fares-15-percent/ Fri, 10 Mar 2017 06:17:28 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=19291 Some transport operators in the nation’s capital, Accra have increased their fares, a move that has been caused by an increase in fuel prices.

Although there has not been an official confirmation of the hike by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the umbrella body for transport operators, Myjoyonline.com’s Austin Brakopowers visited the lorry station at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange on Thursday and reports of the increment.

He reports that at some of the destination terminals transport fares have gone up by 10 percent and others by 15 percent.

Passengers heading to Russia, and Shukura, all suburbs in Accra, who were initially paying GH?1.70p are now paying GH? 2.00.

Also, some drivers are charging GH? 1.50ps from passengers heading to Kaneshie from the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange lorry park. The same distance a day or two ago cost passengers GH? 1.20p.

Transport fares for other destinations have also gone up at other transport yards.

However, at the New Town lorry park, the drivers have not increased fares charged passengers, Austin reports.

Some of the transport operators charging the revised fares told the reporter that the rising cost of fuel prices in the country are to blame for the hikes.

“We have changed the money we charge because the filling station operators have increased prices of petrol,” a driver who identified himself as Musa told the reporter.

“If fuel prices go down, we will also reduce the fares,” he added.
The development has angered passengers many of whom engaged in serious arguments with the drivers.

Though they are unhappy with the increment, the passengers had no option than to pay the money so as to get home safely.

FUEL PRICE HIKES

Within the last three months, fuel prices have been constantly reviewed upwards, constraining the finances of transport operators and other consumers.

Even though the price of crude oil at the international market is still hovering at 55 dollars a barrel, the depreciation of the cedi against the dollar means Ghanaians have to pay more for fuel.

The price build for fuel in Ghana is largely influenced by currency performance, prices of oil on the international market as well taxes imposed
or abolished.

A change in each of these could either lead to an increase or decrease in prices of fuel in Ghana, even though the prices have barely been reviewed downwards.

With the cedi still on a free fall against the major currencies, fuel prices on the local market is set to experience another upward review.
