Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 16, Dr Asante stressed that adequately resourcing the military is critical to ensuring safety and efficiency in their operations.

“We need to look at GAF and the resources available to them. This tragic accident must push us to reflect on whether our military has what it needs to work safely and effectively,” he stated.

He emphasised that beyond mourning the fallen officers and government officials, the nation must confront systemic challenges that may have contributed to the crash.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed.

Also killed were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A state funeral was held on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square in Accra, where national leaders, military personnel, and citizens paid their final respects.

Dr Asante noted that while the tragedy has plunged the nation into grief, it must also serve as a wake-up call to strengthen the capacity and preparedness of the armed forces.

I’m in great pain; your death is hard to bear – Haruna Iddrisu mourns Dr. Omane Boamah https://www.adomonline.com/im-in-great-pain-your-death-is-hard-to-bear-haruna-iddrisu-mourns-dr-omane-boamah/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 14:25:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567635 Tribute to late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah by Haruna Iddrisu, Education Minister.

With a heart crushed beneath the weight of grief, I stand before a world that commiserates in sadness, a nation that is grief-stricken, and the family of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah that can only be utterly shaken to the core, to pay this untimely tribute in my capacity as a colleague Cabinet Minister to the Minister for Defence of the Republic of Ghana until that tragic event of Wednesday, 6th August, 2025.

On that fateful day, since dubbed Ghana’s Black Wednesday, Dr. Omane Boamah, was onboard a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter together with seven others, namely: Hon. Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed–MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Limuna Muniru–Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of our National Democratic Congress, Samuel Aboagye–former parliamentary candidate, and the flight crew of Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The group was en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) when their aircraft came down near Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom District in unconfirmed circumstances.

All eight gallant Ghanaians perished in what Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Julius Debrah, described as a national tragedy.

As a nation, we are grief-stricken and mourn as we do because never in the history of Ghana has such a fate befallen us, for high-ranking state officials of that stature to be lost as they were on that dark day.

We grieve but submit to the ways of the all-knowing Allah. Because as we faithfully hold, it is Allah’s will that what happened happened and happened as it did, gruesome and devastating as it is.

It is particularly so for Dr. Omane Boamah for whom this eulogy goes, because we know he was earlier not scheduled to be on that ill-fated flight. What a tragic loss! He was simply formidable, thoughtful, and strategic in all he did, a political thinker whose singular preoccupation was Mahama’s success, driven by his love for mother Ghana.

You were a founding member of the Committee for Joint Action (CJA) with Kwesi Pratt, Bernard Mornah, and Kwesi Adu, among others.

From the night John Mahama conceded to the outcome of the 2016 elections to your untimely and tragic death in a helicopter crash, you served with unalloyed loyalty, dedication, and unwavering commitment. Ghana has lost an exemplary public servant and son.

You told me and Rita that you were not interested and not likely to accept an appointment into His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s “Second Coming.”

You told me there were only two threats (to be shared in the future or at a later date) and God that could stand in the way of now President Mahama’s return, and you worked with your small team to make it happen.

It is an irony of fate that the Minister of Defence was bereft of the defence he deserved when it mattered most, and the medical doctor was left with no option for emergency care.

Sad and, as it were, unacceptable as it is, who are we, mere mortals, to question the script of the All-Powerful yet Ever Merciful God?

Even as we’ve been to the family house to commiserate with the inconsolable Rita and the rest of the family, my heartfelt condolences go to them and the children again.

Edward, your death is a terrible blow and very hard to bear, as you died in such a tragic way in the line of duty.

May your blood so painfully shed be the caustic cleaning agent that purifies our water bodies from the pollution of heavy metals and restores our degraded forests from the evil of illegal small-scale mining, otherwise known as “galamsey.”

Omane Boamah and I, besides being trusted and able lieutenants as Cabinet Ministers of His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama, share in common a number of notable roles since our respective student days.

In that sense and in reality, he was a younger brother to me, and a dear one at that. I am in great pain.

As I was from 1996 to 1997 in a memorable and epoch-making tenure, Edward was also President of the National Union of Ghana Students during his student days at the University of Ghana Medical School.

His efficiency and political acumen were honed from those times as he combined the demands of medical education with student politics, also serving as the Coordinating Secretary of the Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association.

Again, Omane received my handing-over notes in 2013 as he succeeded me as Minister of Communications during President Mahama’s first presidency.

At a time when that portfolio was combined with that of Information, he concurrently and ably served as the Spokesman for His Excellency the President.

Previously, he had served in Deputy Ministerial capacities for Environment, Science and Technology and also for Youth and Sports during the tenure of our late and beloved President John Evans Atta Mills.

At a time when youth were not being credited with much experience and capacity, Omane Boamah was part of the corpus of young and vibrant political activists whom President Mills purposefully sought to challenge with ministerial portfolios.

And by the grace of God and by virtue of our preparation and the support of Ghanaians high and low, we delivered and lived up to the high expectation of us.

Indeed, I was particularly tasked by the Venerable Ato Awhoi to recruit some of such student activists from NUGS to be appointed Ministers and Omane Boamah turned out to be one such vibrant and promising young politician.

Indeed, Omane Boamah has been described as the midwife who helped deliver NDC’s resounding 2024 electoral victory in his capacity as the party’s untiring Director of Elections and IT.

His brilliance and ability to quickly find solutions to problems and as a strategist inspired President John Mahama to entrust him with the high office of Defence Minister.

It is regrettable that you have been so cruelly snatched away from us just seven months into the victory you worked so hard to achieve, and while our arduous duty to reset Ghana has just begun.

Like a gallant warrior, you went on an important mission to help save our nation from the canker of “galamsey”.

As Defence Minister, you led the charge in a military helicopter to help battle Ghana’s current existential threat of illegal small-scale mining. You showed leadership.

But alas, and heart-wrenchingly so, it was a mission of no return. But as the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church—as your beloved Pope John’s Senior High School and Minor Seminary would have taught you—your work and the ultimate price you paid will never be forgotten.

I have lost a brother and a friend. Only you could calm me because you understood my irrepressible and optimistic temperament. You would tell them, “Leave Haruna to me.”

As we commit the mortal remains of my friend, brother, and colleague into the bosom of Mother Earth, I hark to the words of the immortal lines the Armed Forces call forth to bid farewell to their fallen heroes—the Binyon Verses: Omane, “[You] shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary [you], nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember [you].

Rest in perfect peace, Dr. Omane Boamah. The memory of you was to work for Mahama to succeed.

Yes, indeed, and you began to succeed in that resolve with our electoral victory.
Fare thee well. My brother and friend, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah—Minister for Defence of the Republic of Ghana: January 20, 2025, to August 6, 2025.

Biography of Samuel Kwaku Adu Aboagye https://www.adomonline.com/biography-of-samuel-kwaku-adu-aboagye/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 12:32:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567572 Samuel Kwaku Adu Aboagye – Deputy Director-General of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

It is often said that the hour of death cannot be foretold. Though we acknowledge this truth, we tend to believe that such a moment lies far ahead in time. Never did we imagine that today, we would be gathered here to remember and mourn our brother Hon. Samuel Aboagye, whose body we cannot identify.

Adu Kwaku, as the family calls him, was born on December 23, 1990, in Damongo, in the Savannah Region of Ghana.

His parents are the late Mr. Jeremiah Kwabena Aboagye and Madam Ama Ajubi. The father was an Agric Extension officer at Damongo and later became a businessman upon his retirement and came home to Adansi-Patakoro.

The late father was the chief of Patakoro in the early ’80s. He was the last child of his parents (Kakyere).

Early life

Hon. Samuel Aboagye started his primary school at the Damongo Cambridge Educational Complex. He joined his parents to return to Obuasi since his father had retired and was getting older.

He continued his education at Bekwai, Victory International Complex, and wrote his BECE at St. Philip Catholic Int. School at Tutuka-Obuasi in 2006.

He was enrolled at St. Margaret Senior High from 2007 to 2010 for his secondary education.

He had his first degree from Accra Business School and proceeded to do his master’s programme  in business administration between the years of 2020 and 2024.

Christian life

Adu was a Christian and member of the Church of Pentecost. He was baptized in water at Damongo in the year 2005. He prides himself as a member of the Church of Pentecost because the whole family attends the Church of Pentecost, of which his elder brother is a pastor.

His love for God and things in the church was admirable.

He was someone who did not hide his Christian faith and was always ready to contribute his quota to the growth and development of his church.

Professional life

Hon. Samuel Aboagye was a promising young man full of business ideas. With the help of his family, he made his first business trip to Germany in 2013 and later to the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).

During this period, he also served as a FIFA-licensed agent, engaging in international sports management and building valuable global networks.

He returned to Ghana in 2017 to serve his country and his hometown, Adansi, until the Black Wednesday of this tragic incident, which claimed his life. He was married to Abigail Salami and had two children, all girls.

Political life

Hon. Samuel Aboagye was the parliamentary candidate for the NDC, Obuasi East Constituency, in the 2020 elections.

He was again the parliamentary candidate in the 2024 elections, which he won, but administrative errors on the side of the electoral commission wrongfully announced the win to his opponent, for which the case is pending in the law court.

The President, John Dramani Mahama, then appointed him as the Deputy Director General of NADMO. It was in this capacity, serving his people and his country, that he got involved in this tragic helicopter crash.

Transition to glory

On the morning of Wednesday, 6th August 2025, news broke out in the social media about a helicopter crash; little did we know that our brother was part of the people who were on the plane.

The news sends shockwaves through the family and friends; even now, it remains difficult to accept that our son, brother, and friend is no more with us.

The family investment in our brother has gone to waste. Why so soon, Sammy? We take comfort in the Lord that death is not the end; it is but a brief rest for those who walk with the Lord. Indeed, his passing is a profound loss to the family, the church, and the community.

Adu Kwaku, hmmmmm!

May His soul Rest In Perfect Peace.

Damirifa due, Brother.

It is difficult to put into words the weight of such loss – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/it-is-difficult-to-put-into-words-the-weight-of-such-loss-mahama/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 11:35:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567482 President John Dramani Mahama has described the August 6 Sikaman helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives, as a tragedy that “forever casts its shadow over the heart of Ghana.”

Speaking at the state funeral in Accra, the President said the loss was not just a national tragedy but also a personal heartbreak, as the victims were trusted colleagues, advisors, and friends.

He paid glowing tribute to Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, NADMO Deputy Director General Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Armed Forces crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

“It is difficult to put into words the weight of such loss. The grief we feel is not only the sorrow of individuals but the collective mourning of a people. Ghana has lost leaders whose work touched every corner of our Republic — leaders whose service was not measured in days, but in their impact and the lives they touched.

“They did not seek recognition or applause; they were giving of themselves, without hesitation, for the good of Ghana. Their final act was one of service, and that is how they will be remembered,” Mahama said.

The President assured the nation that a full and transparent investigation into the crash would be conducted to prevent future tragedies, adding that the fallen heroes’ values of integrity, humility, and loyalty would remain a guiding light for Ghana.

Muhammed’s life was a blessing to us – Wife of late Murtala Muhammed shares heartfelt tribute at state funeral https://www.adomonline.com/muhammeds-life-was-a-blessing-to-us-wife-of-late-murtala-muhammed-shares-heartfelt-tribute-at-state-funeral/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 10:56:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567437 The wife of the late Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has delivered a moving tribute to her husband, honouring his life, faith, and dedication to service during the state funeral held on Friday, August 15.

Dr. Muhammed was among eight patriots who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

In her emotional address, Hadiatu described her husband as “a gift to all who knew him” — a man defined by kindness, patience, and unwavering love.

“For almost a decade, I had the privilege of walking through life by his side. Together, we raised our beautiful children, and in every step of that journey, he showed me what it means to be kind, patient, and full of love,” she recalled.

She spoke of his deep faith, integrity, and dependability, sharing a personal moment that reflected his devotion to national duty.

During an emergency, he once told her, “My dear, the president has called me” — a reminder that she shared him not only with their family but also with the nation.

Beyond his public role, Hadiatu remembered him as a loving father — one who found joy in simple moments, like his daughters playfully combing his bald head and laughing with him.

“In those moments, he was not the Minister of State, but simply a dad,” she noted warmly.

She praised his humour, generosity, and selflessness, saying he always put others before himself and worked tirelessly, not for recognition, but from a genuine desire to serve.

“Muhammed’s life was a blessing to us, and his memory will forever be a treasure. May Allah grant you Jannatul Firdaus and eternal peace. We love you, we miss you, and we will carry your light with us always,” she concluded.

Read the full tribute below:

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. God is Great, God is Great, God is Great. Praise be to Allah, the cherisher and the sustainer of the worlds. ‘To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return.

“For almost a decade, I had the privilege of walking through life by his side. Together, we raised our beautiful children, and in every step of that journey, he showed me and everyone around him what it means to be kind, patient, and full of love.”

“Mohamed was more than a husband and father; he was a man of deep faith. God-fearing and humble, he lived his life with integrity, always choosing the right path, even when it was not the easy one.

“He was trustworthy and dependable, the kind of person you could call at any hour, knowing he would answer.”

“I remember once, an incident on the road. Of course, he was the first person I called. He picked up right away, and I told him my situation, expecting him to come rushing to my rescue.

“He listened patiently, sympathised, and then said, ‘Ah… my dear, the president has called me.’ In that moment, I realised I wasn’t just sharing my husband with friends, family, or the community. I was sharing him with the President of Ghana as well!!”

“His daughters would comb his hair or perhaps I should say his head… because he had no hair to comb. He loved to play horse with the children; these were the moments I smiled because then he was not wearing the hat of a Minister of State but that of a dad.”

His humour, generosity, and commitment to others were at the heart of her farewell.

“He had a wonderful sense of humour that could light up a room, and a heart that was always ready to help. More often than not, he put others before himself.

“Hard-working and determined, he gave his best in everything he did, not for recognition, but because it was in his nature to serve and to care.”

She closed her tribute with words of love and prayer.

“Mohammed’s life was a blessing to us, and his memory will forever be a treasure. He has left us far too soon, but his love, his laughter, and his example will live on in our children, in our hearts, and in the countless lives he touched.

“Rest well, my husband. May Allah grant you Jannatul Firdaus and surround you with eternal peace. We love you, we miss you, and we will carry your light with us always. Inshah Allah. Daddy, we love and miss you so much. Forever in our hearts.”

Mahama has resolved to ruthlessly deal with ‘galamsey’ – Ablakwa https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-has-resolved-to-ruthlessly-deal-with-galamsey-ablakwa/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 08:03:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567287 President John Dramani Mahama has committed to a “ruthless and relentless campaign” to end illegal mining, known as ‘galamsey’, to end the menace that has resulted in significant losses.

The pledge follows the tragic military helicopter crash on August 6 that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers who were at the forefront of the anti-galamsey fight.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed the President’s new resolve to JoyNews journalist Blessed Sogah today (August 14), after signing a book of condolences for the victims.

The minister’s remarks signal a major shift in the government’s approach, which many view as a decisive response to a crisis that has spiralled into a national tragedy.

“I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed in this country,” Ablakwa stated. “President Mahama is going to lead a very ruthless and relentless campaign against Galamsey. He has not minced words at all.”

Mr Ablakwa’s comments shed light on an urgent mini-cabinet meeting held earlier in the day, where the President reportedly made his intentions clear.

“We had a brief cabinet meeting earlier today, and the president was very clear. There was no ambiguity that he would be leading a war that we have never seen to deal with this existential threat once and for all,” the minister added.

The late Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, along with six other public servants, died while on a mission to launch a community mining scheme, a key initiative to bring some illegal miners into a regulated framework.

Their deaths have galvanised the government to take a more aggressive stance.

The new campaign comes amid alarming data on the severe environmental and economic toll of illegal mining.

According to recent reports, over 19,000 hectares of cocoa farmland, a pillar of Ghana’s economy, have been destroyed by galamsey.

The use of toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide has polluted more than 60% of Ghana’s major water bodies, including the Pra and Ankobra rivers, raising fears that the nation may have to import water by 2030.

Past efforts by successive governments, including Operation Vanguard and Operation Halt, have often been met with limited success.

This new “ruthless” approach is expected to be a more comprehensive and sustained effort, targeting not just the miners but the powerful sponsors behind them.

Speaking to JoyNews at the state funeral of the eight people, including Dr. Boamah, who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash, Mr. Gunu recounted his exceptional approach to the 2024 general elections.

“He is one person who brought his experience and expertise as a medical doctor practitioner to bear on our electoral architecture, and he was able to demystify the rumors that the NDC was not able to collate its election in 2020.

“So when it came to the 2024 election, it was like a medical officer took the whole election system to a laboratory to diagnose and found a solution and made recommendations on what to do, especially with regard to ballot accounting and other things that will help us win the election and in fact he did very well,” Mr. Gunu eulogised.

The fallen eight

The minister noted that Dr. Omane Boamah’s ability to merge medical precision with political strategy reflected his rare blend of professional expertise and patriotic commitment.

He emphasised that his role should not be forgotten. He also mourned the other six, describing their loss as the loss of a national asset.

Even in disagreement, you can’t quarrel with Omane Boamah – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu https://www.adomonline.com/even-in-disagreement-you-cant-quarrel-with-omane-boamah-kyei-mensah-bonsu/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 07:36:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567268 Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has remembered the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, as a man of remarkable versatility and disarming charm.

He said he was the kind of person with whom it was impossible to quarrel, even in moments of disagreement.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, in the wake of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed Dr. Boamah’s life alongside seven others, the former Suame MP described his late friend as “a man of great versatility.”

The former Parliamentary Minister said the former Defence Minister’s personality left a mark on everyone who encountered him.

“Dr. Omane Boamah, I knew personally. He has a very versatile personality, is a medical officer, a former minister responsible for government communications, and was in charge of defence for the country. That indicates to anybody assessing him that he is a man of great versatility,” he said.

Recalling their rapport, the former Majority Leader said their interactions were always warm and light-hearted.

“We’ve known each other for quite some time now, ever since he came into the political limelight, and we have been having conversations on occasion. Anytime that we bump into each other, it’s always a joke that we share.”

He said Dr. Boamah had a rare gift for defusing tension, even in heated debates.

“He’s one person that even when you disagree with, you can’t pick up a quarrel with him, because he will end up making a joke of it, even if it is a big issue, and lighten the conversation. That was Dr. Omane Boamah for me.”

Advertising Association of Ghana pays tribute to helicopter crash victims https://www.adomonline.com/advertising-association-of-ghana-pays-tribute-to-helicopter-crash-victims/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 21:34:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567239 As the nation continues to mourn the tragic loss of eight persons who died in a recent helicopter crash, the Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has joined the many institutions and organizations paying tribute at the designated flower-laying gardens.

Following the official conclusion of the three-day national mourning period, members of the AAG, led by their President, Andrew Ackah, laid flowers in honour and offered prayers for their peaceful rest.

Speaking during the solemn ceremony, Mr. Ackah extended heartfelt condolences to the President of the Republic, the bereaved families, and the entire nation, noting that the loss was not only personal to the families but deeply felt across government and society.

“This is a big loss—not only to their families—but to the presidency, the government, and to the citizenry of the country,” Mr. Ackah said.

“It is not just a tragedy; personally and physically it breaks the heart, mind, and will of the people. But we need to be strong, and that is why we are here—to commiserate with the government and the entire nation.”

He emphasized that the AAG was present in solidarity and committed to supporting the national healing process in any way possible.

As the country prepares to lay the fallen officers to rest, he called on all Ghanaians to reflect on their sacrifice and the values they upheld.

“This is not about politics; it is about service to the nation and the thumbprints and footprints these men left in the sands of time. We should pick up where they left off and use their legacy for the greater good of Ghanaians.”

Mr. Ackah also drew a connection between the association’s work and broader national issues, particularly the ongoing fight against illegal mining, or “galamsey”, which has devastating effects on the environment and public health.

“We have strong connections with the media and have been helping amplify the dangers of illegal mining. It’s not just about the environment—it affects our physical health and wellbeing. We’re committed to continuing this fight.”

He further highlighted internal challenges facing the advertising industry, likening the unregulated installation of billboards to a form of “galamsey” within their own sector.

“We’re also fighting the illegal mounting of billboards by unscrupulous actors, which poses serious risks to pedestrians and motorists alike. It’s a fight for safety, order, and integrity in our profession—just as it is in every part of national life.”

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Policy Advisor to the Vice President disclosed that the grief has been so intense that within just one week, he has lost five kilograms.

“I stood on a measuring scale on Wednesday and realised that just within a week, I had lost five kg. That is how badly the news of the victims has affected me,” he said.

According to him, the tragedy has hit particularly hard because he shared a close bond with most of the victims.

“I can’t even sleep. When I hear a dirge being played, my heart beats faster, and I begin to shake,” he recounted.

He revealed that after speaking to someone about his condition, he was advised to avoid television and radio to protect his mental health.

“The grief and pain from their death have taken a great toll on me, and I feel it deeply within,” he added.

The helicopter crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight people, including senior government officials and military personnel.

Following days of national mourning and wreath-laying ceremonies, a state burial will be held in their honour on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Late Alhaji Muniru was one of Mahama’s most trusted envoys – Ofosu Ampofo https://www.adomonline.com/late-alhaji-muniru-was-one-of-mahamas-most-trusted-envoys-ofosu-ampofo/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 16:45:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567197 Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has paid a glowing tribute to the late Alhaji Mohammed Muniru, describing him as one of President John Mahama’s most reliable and results-oriented envoys.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Ofosu Ampofo revealed that his friendship with the late Minister for Food and Agriculture began about 25 years ago when they both studied at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

“We go way back. Whenever he visited my home, we would sit on the floor and watch TV together. He was very hardworking, and I can say he was one of President Mahama’s trusted envoys,” he said.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo recounted that during his time as Minister of Food and Agriculture, Alhaji Muniru’s dedication and vision were evident to all.

“If President Mahama needed someone to get something done in the Northern Region, it was Muniru. He was a very trusted lieutenant who always delivered results,” he noted.

According to him, much of the late Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator’s work was carried out quietly, away from public attention.

“He took care of President Mahama’s farms and was recently appointed to a new role. Sadly, on his very first official trip, he met his untimely death,” he recounted.

The Board Chairman of COCOBOD and Policy Advisor to the Vice President also revealed that he had personal ties with many of the victims of the tragic incident, making the loss even more painful.

The crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of Alhaji Muniru and seven other people, including two ministers.

The deceased were: Minister of Defence Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Vice Chairman of the NDC Samuel Sarpong, Acting NADMO boss Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Deputy Majority Chief Whip clarifies comments on helicopter crash [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/deputy-majority-chief-whip-clarifies-comments-on-helicopter-crash-listen/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 09:51:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566939 The Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Comfort Doyoe-Cudjoe, has refuted allegations that she claimed foul play was behind the August 6 helicopter tragedy that claimed eight lives.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Ada Member of Parliament (MP) stressed, “I didn’t see anybody, so how could I have said there was someone behind it? I have no evidence.”

Her earlier remarks had drawn controversy after she suggested that available evidence pointed to the Z-9 helicopter exploding mid-air rather than crashing into a tree, as initially reported.

She argued that her view was informed by the absence of the helicopter at the crash site, with only scattered parts and no intact remains of the victims.

The comments prompted sharp criticism, including a call by New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Koduah for her arrest and interrogation, describing her statements as reckless.

However, Mrs. Doyoe-Cudjoe maintained that her words had been misrepresented.

She insisted she had not accused anyone of being behind the incident and urged the public to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of investigations.

“Did Justin Koduah hear me say there are people behind it? He is the one making that claim. I spoke as a layperson because, from the videos I have seen, there was no visible helicopter, and the bodies were scattered. I spoke without any malicious intent.

“We are all grieving this tragedy, but we must allow the investigation to run its course to reveal the facts,” she added.

In a related incident, NPP activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuasi, was arrested for sharing a viral video showing people handling weapons.

We didn’t know Omane Boamah was traveling – Tanko Computer on his final hours https://www.adomonline.com/we-didnt-know-omane-boamah-was-traveling-tanko-computer-on-his-final-hours/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 08:28:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566914 Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Rashid Tanko-Computer, has revealed that the late Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, never informed close colleagues about his trip on the day of the tragic military helicopter crash.

“In fact, in the morning, we had a close discussion with Dr Omane Boamh around 7 am. It was virtual. Because he mostly does meetings virtually,” he said on JoyNews’ PM Express.

The Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) described Dr Boamah as a man who valued time.

“He was a type who wanted to use that maximise time, instead of people coming together, sitting around, he would say, ‘Let’s use the social media platforms to do our discussions.’ So most of our meetings were held virtually in the run-up to the 2024 election.”

Mr Tanko-Computer recalled first working with him in 2023 when they met at then-candidate John Mahama’s office.

“That was the day I got to know that NPP were out for trouble in the 2024 election.”

On the morning of the crash, Dr Boamah was deeply engaged in election strategy.

“Around 7.45 am, Dr Omane was giving us strategies on how to go about the Akwatia by-election. He gave us all this strategy because Dr Omane was a master planner. He was behind all these things that we’re doing [in winning elections].

“He will sit down, put pen and paper together, map out the strategy, and say, ‘You go and handle this and that,’ and sit back. And we’ll go and bring him an A+. That is how he was.”

Mr. Tanko Computer stressed that nothing in their conversation hinted at his travel plans.

“So that morning, we had finished all this thing, and were to report back to him by evening, but he didn’t tell us that he was travelling. None of us knew he was going to travel.”

The helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District claimed the lives of Dr Omane Boamah, another cabinet minister, and six others.

President John Mahama has ordered a high-level investigation into the cause.

Cardinal Turkson urges caution and discernment in interpreting prophecies https://www.adomonline.com/cardinal-turkson-urges-caution-and-discernment-in-interpreting-prophecies/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 07:36:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566900 Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, has called for greater discernment and spiritual responsibility in the handling of prophecies, especially those that claim to reveal divine knowledge.

His comments come after the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations called on religious leaders across Ghana to formally share any prophecies or spiritual insights of national importance with the government.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 10, on behalf of President John Mahama, Presidential Envoy Elvis Afriyie Ankra expressed “heartfelt appreciation” to churches and other religious bodies for their “unwavering spiritual support, intercessory prayers, and sustained leadership in promoting peace, moral integrity, and national unity.”

Speaking to journalists, Cardinal Turkson questioned the criteria by which individuals are deemed credible prophets, noting the need for a more rigorous and reflective approach.

“Who is credible? How do we determine that? What is the criteria for a credible prophet?” he asked. “It leaves a lot of questions that need to be answered.”

He cautioned that while individuals may genuinely believe they have received divine insight, the content of such messages must be approached with humility and care.

“Whatever prophecies occur, and God makes his knowledge known to you, you can see the content of that message and if it requires some form of intercession, please do that first, even before seeking to communicate it to anybody,” he advised.

Cardinal Turkson emphasised that prophecy, as a form of divine communication, should first lead the recipient into deeper dialogue with God, rather than immediate public declaration.

“For me, prophecies, as a communication of divine knowledge to humans, first and foremost make you privy to God’s thought. And the first consequence of that should be to speak with God himself, especially if the content of the prophecy is about disaster, evil, or something troubling.”

Adom News visited the community to follow up on preparations for the planned event. Speaking to the news outlet, Mathew Baah, the Assembly Member for the Sikaman Electoral Area, said the gathering was intended to help ease tensions within the community.

Mr. Baah described the council’s move as worrying and appealed for mediation and intervention to allow the memorial to take place. He noted that the community had already incurred debts from arrangements and equipment rentals for the ceremony, which is now cancelled.

Residents are calling on government officials and other relevant stakeholders to intervene so they can pay their respects to the deceased.

Checks revealed that traditional leaders in Adansi Akrofuom blocked the ceremony due to a lack of prior communication. They said the decision was made in the best interest of the community, to prevent potential sanctions or disciplinary actions from higher authorities.

Meanwhile, some residents revealed they are still living in fear, with many unable to visit their farms, especially those whose farmlands are near the crash site.

NPP apologises to Mahama, NDC over affiliated TikTok users’ remarks on helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/npp-apologises-to-mahama-ndc-over-affiliated-tiktok-users-remarks-on-helicopter-crash/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 20:35:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566817 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has apologised to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama for any offence caused by remarks from individuals affiliated with the party regarding the August 6 helicopter crash.

The apology was delivered during a courtesy visit to the NDC headquarters, where the NPP delegation also formally extended condolences over the tragic incident.

“If anything said from our side was offensive, I sincerely apologise on behalf of the party. Such behaviour is not sanctioned by the NPP,” Mr. Kodua said.

He described the remarks as “unfortunate, condemnable, and not reflective of the party’s values.”

“In moments like these, we must stand in solidarity. The NPP would never wish death on anyone, not even a political opponent. Such statements are harmful to our democracy,” he added.

Mr. Kodua also warned against politicising national tragedies, noting that inflammatory comments had come from both political sides. “Some have accused the NPP of orchestrating these events, while others have suggested they expected more fatalities. These are dangerous sentiments that all responsible citizens should reject,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of social media personalities ‘Fante Comedy’ and ‘Akosua Jollof’ over threats and harmful commentary against President Mahama. The police also confirmed that the arrest of NPP activist ‘Sir Obama Pokuase’ is part of an ongoing operation targeting the illegal possession and public display of high-grade weapons.

Retired Air Force officer downplays severe weather as possible cause of helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/retired-air-force-officer-downplays-severe-weather-as-possible-cause-of-helicopter-crash/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 13:53:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566721 Former Air Force officer Wing Commander Nelson Patrick Sorgbordzor has downplayed suggestions that adverse weather played a decisive role in a recent military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished individuals.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, August 13, Wing Commander Sorgbordzor offered a firm defence of both pilot competency and operational protocol when it comes to flying in difficult weather conditions.

“In the Air Force, or everywhere, we have grades of pilots,” he explained. “If he were not qualified to fly in bad weather, he wouldn’t fly.”

He went on to describe the structured licensing system that governs a pilot’s ability to operate in different meteorological conditions.

“We have licenses, maybe A, B, C, D, and it’s all green that makes them fly in all weather,” he said, referring to the progressive nature of pilot certifications. “And I don’t think the bad weather was so bad.”

His remarks directly challenge the assumption that weather could be a central factor in the crash, suggesting instead that the pilot would have been properly cleared and capable of handling the flight under such conditions.

Sorgbordzor also spoke to the limitations of emergency landings when flying over forested terrain, noting that, unlike populated areas, there are few, if any, viable landing options.

“Talking about an aircraft landing in a school, there was a space for it to go and land,” he said.

“But you fly over a forest area, where are you going to land? If the village had a park and they attempted to land there, that is what we call a forced landing. But over the forest, there is nowhere to land except on trees.”

She explained that reaching the crash site was difficult due to bad weather.

“The road leading to the scene was very slippery because it was under construction, and it was raining that day. That affected us a lot,” she noted.

When asked if the rescue team was late, Ms. Appiah Kannin stressed that the outcome would likely have been the same.

“Whether they were late or not, by the time we got there, whatever had happened had already happened,” she said.

She confirmed that many rescue workers were present at the scene, working to respond to the tragedy.

“A lot of the rescue team were already around when we arrived,” she added.

The helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manean Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The crash has since plunged the nation into mourning.

Helicopter crash: Why remains were carried in sacks – Obuasi West MCE [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/helicopter-crash-why-remains-were-carried-in-sacks-obuasi-west-mce-listen/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 11:34:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566636
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has responded to criticism over how the remains of the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash were handled.

Some Ghanaians, including the President of the Academy of Forensics, Dr. Pet-Paul Wepeba, condemned the decision to transport the bodies in sacks, calling it “undignified” and inconsistent with both Ghana’s disaster recovery protocols and international best practices. Dr. Wepeba stressed that secure, non-leaking body bags with zippers should have been used.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Kannin explained that the method used was the only practical option at the time, given the condition of the remains.

“The place was very hot, so how could anyone have gone there to take anything? Even the body bags we requested could not be used. When the remains were placed inside, the material melted, and there was nothing else we could do,” she said.

She revealed that AngloGold Ashanti Hospital had supplied several body bags, but they became unusable due to extreme heat at the crash site.

Madam Kannin also addressed speculation that residents who arrived early at the scene might have stolen personal effects, dismissing such claims as unfounded. She urged the public to show respect and caution in discussions about the tragedy, warning against spreading unverified or demeaning remarks.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with authorities examining whether adverse weather conditions played a role.

The incident claimed the lives of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and three military personnel—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manean Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A state burial service, bringing together multiple religious denominations, is scheduled for Friday, August 15.

President John Mahama has also announced the creation of an Education Fund to support the children of the deceased.

There were multiple pickup location changes before helicopter crash – Obuasi MCE recounts [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/there-were-multiple-pickup-location-changes-before-helicopter-crash-obuasi-mce-recounts-audio/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 10:35:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566594 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has recounted her final conversations with Samuel Aboagye, one of the victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

Aboagye, who was serving as Acting Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), was aboard the ill-fated Z-9 Air Force helicopter that went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District — a tragedy that has plunged the nation into mourning.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Kannin revealed that Aboagye contacted her early that morning to coordinate transport for their mutual acquaintance, former Minister Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, who was also among the victims.

“I was coordinating the event, and he first called around 6:45 a.m. to inform me that our godfather, Alhaji Muniru, was flying to Obuasi and I should pick him up at the airstrip. I told my driver to prepare the car to go and meet him,” she recounted.

Shortly after, she received a call from Alhaji himself, confirming that Aboagye had spoken to her. She assured him preparations were underway and believed they had not yet departed from Accra.

The MCE explained that a series of location changes followed as the morning unfolded, reportedly due to bad weather affecting the helicopter’s ability to land.

“Around 8 a.m., Aboagye called again, asking that the driver meet them at Ofori Stadium. Then he changed the plan back to the airstrip. Later, at about 9 a.m., he instructed the driver to head to the Black Park, near the event grounds,” she said.

Madam Kannin said she was unaware Aboagye himself was aboard the helicopter, as all their discussions focused on Alhaji Muniru.

“After that last call, I tried reaching both of them, but neither picked up. That was the last time I heard from them,” she recalled solemnly.

The crash claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians: Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manean Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Alhaji Muniru and Dr Murtala were buried on Sunday, August 10, in line with Islamic rites, with an inter-denominational state burial for all victims scheduled for August 15.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that investigations are underway, with support from international experts, to determine the cause of the crash.

Speaking at the Muslim funeral rites of the late Alhaji Mohammed Muniru — one of the eight victims of last Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash — Mr. Nketia reminded the nation that nothing happens without the knowledge of God, whether called Allah or the Almighty.

While acknowledging that prophecies have their place, he cautioned that they should not dominate the national conversation at a time when unity and resilience are crucial.

He urged citizens to channel their energy into supporting the country’s leadership in working toward healing and progress, describing the loss of the eight as a moment to reflect and confront Ghana’s challenges together.

We cannot trade our children’s future for galamsey profits – Senyo Hosi https://www.adomonline.com/we-cannot-trade-our-childrens-future-for-galamsey-profits-senyo-hosi/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 08:04:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566522 Convenor of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, has warned against the growing temptation to weigh the country’s immediate economic needs against the destructive effects of illegal mining.

He insists that such a trade-off would be a grave mistake for the country’s future.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Hosi said, “Galamsey is an environmental crime. We must see the reality of what we are dealing with.

“There’s always the temptation to want to balance it with the economic needs of the time. We need to hold the cedi, agree, but we cannot do that by jeopardising the future of our children and their children. We are destroying the meaning of life. Water is life.”

He argued that the country cannot afford to sacrifice its water bodies, forest reserves, and human resources for short-term financial gain.

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t mine, but there’s every reason why we must fight and bring to nought any environmental crime and illegal and irresponsible mining. Our advocacy has not been that we shouldn’t mine. We should mine, but mine responsibly and legally.

“We can’t be destroying our water bodies. We can’t be destroying our forest reserves, and now we are destroying families. We are depriving this country of great human resources that could help drive and manage and transform policy for the good of our children’s children. This cannot be made to continue.”

Mr. Hosi linked his comments to the tragic military helicopter crash that killed two cabinet ministers and six others in the Adansi Akrofuom district of the Ashanti Region, an incident President John Mahama has promised will be fully investigated.

“We have tried everything; we’ve deployed soldiers, we’ve deployed policemen, and today we have rendered eight families, created over eight widows, all of a sudden, and if we let this pass by and not let it count, that will be a huge block on our own conscience as a people.”

The campaigner revealed that he narrowly escaped being on the ill-fated flight.

“As a matter of fact, I could have been on that flight. My colleague Daryl Bosu [Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana] and Dr. Ken Ashigbey [both members of the Coalition Against Galamsey] had to go. I was not in town. What I would typically be doing is making sure I’m there.”

GAF cautions media against speculation on helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/gaf-cautions-media-against-speculation-on-helicopter-crash/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 08:00:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566516 The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has appealed to media professionals, commentators, bloggers, and content creators to avoid spreading unverified or speculative information regarding the recent military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement signed by Captain (GN) V. A. Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the GAF expressed concern over “numerous speculative and unsubstantiated commentaries” about the Z-9 Air Force helicopter incident.

“For the sake of the bereaved families and loved ones, the Armed Forces urges media practitioners, panellists, social commentators, bloggers, and content creators to be circumspect in their reportage as a way of according respect to the memories of the fallen heroes and to mitigate the sorrows of the bereaved families,” the statement said.

The Armed Forces acknowledged the heightened public interest in the tragedy but assured that a detailed investigation is underway, with input from international agencies, to determine the cause of the crash.

“At this point in time, any purported conclusions based on opinions, perceptions, and conjectures will be premature and misleading. The public is therefore advised to be wary of such reportage,” the statement cautioned.

The GAF also expressed gratitude to the government, institutions, and individuals who have shown support during this period of national mourning and extended its deepest sympathies to the grieving families. “May the souls of our patriots continue to rest in peace,” it concluded.

Politics should unite, not divide us – Speaker Bagbin https://www.adomonline.com/politics-should-unite-not-divide-us-speaker-bagbin/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 15:08:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566356 The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged Ghanaians to see politics as a unifying force rather than a source of division, stressing that it should transcend partisan lines and work toward building national cohesion.

He said the true aim of politics is to bring citizens together around shared aspirations, not to create discord.

Mr. Bagbin made these remarks on Monday, August 11, 2025, when he led a delegation of parliamentary leaders to the home of the late Alhaji Mohammed Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, to commiserate with his family.

Alhaji Muniru was among eight prominent public officials who perished in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, while on their way to Obuasi for an official anti-illegal mining operation.

His burial, alongside that of Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, took place on Sunday, August 10, in accordance with Islamic traditions.

The Speaker said the visit was to honour the memory of the late national security official, who was widely admired for his commitment to public service. He encouraged the bereaved family to draw strength from faith and the legacy Alhaji Muniru left behind.

“Once again, let us in this grief not forget the power of the almighty God; all works for our good, and we will continue to thank him for these precious lives and the service they rendered to us, and we pray they find an eternal good place for them to stay until we meet again,” he said.

Mr. Bagbin described the late Muniru as a selfless leader who rose above political divides in service to the nation. He appealed to political leaders and citizens alike to embrace unity, mutual respect, and cooperation in diversity.

“In the same way, we are also here as leaders so we can add our voice to talk to the people. Whatever differences we have, it is the creation of God; we’re all created differently,” he said, adding that politics should be about harmonising differences for the public good.

“It’s God who created us different. And that is what politics is about—how you get that difference to work together in unity… not to divide us, not to let us hate each other.”

The delegation included Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, and Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor. They also offered condolences and praised the late Muniru’s dedication to the country.

The Speaker’s call comes as the nation continues to mourn the loss of distinguished leaders, whose service, he said, should inspire a renewed commitment to unity and shared purpose.

Enough of never again; GNAT urges Mahama to act after helicopter tragedy https://www.adomonline.com/enough-of-never-again-gnat-urges-mahama-to-act-after-helicopter-tragedy/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 14:30:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566319 In the wake of a devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is demanding the immediate declaration of a state of emergency to tackle the deepening crisis of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The tragedy has once again underscored the dangers posed by galamsey, a menace that continues to claim lives, destroy communities, and deplete the country’s natural resources.

GNAT described the fallen as “heroes whose sacrifices must never be forgotten” and urged the nation to turn this moment of grief into a rallying point for unity, strength, and patriotism.

Speaking to Adom News, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah expressed sorrow and outrage, urging government action beyond political rhetoric.

“Enough of the ‘never again’ speeches. If what we are hearing is true, that President John Dramani Mahama and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and others were supposed to be on board, then something must be done immediately about galamsey. How many more lives must we lose before we act?” he asked.

Mr. Musah drew parallels between the crash and the 2017 killing of Major Maxwell Mahama, another incident tied to illegal mining that shocked the nation. He recalled former President Akufo-Addo’s vow to put his presidency on the line to end the practice, noting that years later, the crisis remains unresolved.

“Enough is enough. Action must be taken now—or never. This tragedy must not be in vain,” he said, stressing that the courts must also be ready to support the fight.

GNAT reiterated that illegal mining is not only an environmental challenge but a national security threat requiring emergency-level intervention.

“How can we sit back and allow galamsey to make widows of our women and orphans of our children? This is beyond politics—this is about the soul of our nation,” Mr. Musah said.

As Ghana mourns the victims, GNAT’s message is clear: the time for talk is over. The Association is calling for immediate, decisive action to save lives, protect the environment, and preserve the nation’s future.

We will spiritually probe helicopter crash – Ho Central NDC Chairman https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-spiritually-probe-helicopter-crash-ho-central-ndc-chairman/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 11:37:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566238 The Ho Central Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Franklyn Gedzia, has expressed outrage over the recent Z9 military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians on national assignment, calling for a spiritual investigation into the tragedy.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Gedzia described the incident as not only a national disaster but also one that required deeper spiritual scrutiny.

According to him, beyond the ongoing technical and mechanical investigations, the nation must also explore spiritual perspectives to uncover hidden causes and prevent future occurrences.

“We are not very clear about the situation, but you know, some of us from certain backgrounds, we are going to investigate. We will tell our omay to tell us why such a thing should happen. Whatever message comes to us, we will go accordingly, because I know some people are the target. That’s why we are going to investigate it spiritually to know the cause of the deaths. We must go beyond the physical explanations and look into the spiritual realm to understand why this happened,” he fumed.

Mr. Gedzia added that the loss of the eight personnel, especially Dr. Omane Boamah, was a big blow to the Ho Central Constituency, as Dr. Boamah had promised to recruit youth from the constituency into the security services before his untimely death in the crash.

“This is a big blow to me as Chairman of the Ho Central Constituency and to the constituents,” he lamented.

He urged Ghanaians to unite in prayer and reflection as the nation grieves.

The crash, which has plunged the Volta Region and the entire nation into mourning, has sparked widespread calls for accountability, safety reforms, and a comprehensive probe.

While aviation and defence authorities continue with their investigations, the Ho Central NDC Chairman insists that spiritual leaders and traditional authorities should also be engaged to seek divine guidance and answers.

Helicopter crash: Heads must roll – Aircraft Engineer https://www.adomonline.com/helicopter-crash-heads-must-roll-aircraft-engineer/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 09:45:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566163 An aircraft engineer has called for the immediate dismissal of anyone found responsible for lapses in the servicing of the Z-9 helicopter that crashed last Wednesday, killing eight people — three military officers and five civilians.

Dr Robert Nesta Otoo, a British Army aircraft engineer, explained that before any aircraft takes off, it undergoes a series of rigorous servicing procedures.

“Before an aircraft takes off, there are people who carry out service work on it,” he said.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, he outlined that after servicing, ground testing must be conducted to ensure every component is functioning properly. Following certification, the aircraft then undergoes air testing before being cleared for flight.

“After all these tests are done and found satisfactory, the aircraft is made ready to fly,” Dr. Otoo added.

He urged authorities to review the service log from the day of the incident to identify those assigned to work on the helicopter before its departure.

“I am calling on authorities to open the service book on the day of the incident to see those who were assigned to work on the plane before take-off, to ascertain which work was not done diligently enough, leading to the disaster that befell the entire nation,” he said.

Dr. Otoo stressed that if any negligence is established, those involved should be dismissed and sanctioned.

He also rejected claims that Ghana’s aircraft are too old, arguing that poor maintenance — not age — is the primary cause of deterioration.

“These machines are built to last longer. They only need servicing to keep them fit for purpose. This is why I’m calling for an investigation, and whoever didn’t do due diligence should be sacked,” he emphasised.

The British Army engineer further appealed for transparency in the ongoing probe. “Investigators should publish the outcome of the aircraft examination,” he added.

‘It could have been me’ – Former Defence Minister mourns helicopter crash victims https://www.adomonline.com/it-could-have-been-me-former-defence-minister-mourns-helicopter-crash-victims/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 20:22:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566011 Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has shared his grief over the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, a tragedy he described as an unprecedented loss for Ghana.

Speaking at the Evening of Reflections and Memorial at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, Mr Nitiwul revealed the immense sorrow felt by the nation and called for a moment of prayer for the victims.

The former minister’s remarks came during a period of national mourning following the August 6 crash, which killed Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The others who perished were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.

Tragically, the military crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also lost their lives in the crash.

The deceased persons were on their way to the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP) in Obuasi to address illegal mining.

“It’s a very sad situation for all of us,” Nitiwul stated, extending his condolences to the bereaved families, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the entire nation.

He emphasised the difficulty of accepting such a tragic event but underscored a sense of faith.

“The only one who can give and take is the Almighty, and we know that all of them are in the bosom of the Lord.”

Mr Nitiwul highlighted the unique nature of this disaster, noting that while Ghana has experienced other air accidents, the loss of eight lives in this manner, particularly while in the service of the nation, is a “big loss to all of us”.

The emotion in his voice was palpable as he shared a personal connection to the tragedy.

“It directly affects me because I was a minister for 8 years. It could have been me. I mean, it’s possible it could have been me.”

He urged Ghanaians to find solace in prayer, stating, “We cannot ask him why. We can only pray for their souls and that’s all they need now. So I’m asking every Ghanaian to stand for just a minute and say a prayer for them.”

He said these prayers are what will “feed into their souls and ask God to forgive all their sins, their trespasses and take them into his bosom.”

Nitiwul also used the tragedy as a powerful call for national unity, observing that the memorial service had brought together people from all political backgrounds.

“It’s not about a political party. This you see NDC, NPP, and we all mixed together. It is about Ghana today.” He expressed hope that this shared grief would serve as a “clarion call to unite us”.

His final words were a sombre reflection on the lives cut short, some of whom were “very young within their prime” and at the “epitome of their political career.”

He concluded with a message of empathy for the families: “Can you imagine? And we’ve all had it. He was a former interior minister, former minister for communication and all that; you can see that sometimes you just wake up, and even your children have not seen you and you are going to return later and you don’t come back. It is very painful, extremely painful.”

Muntaka recounts Omane Boamah’s reluctant helicopter flight and tragic death https://www.adomonline.com/muntaka-recounts-omane-boamahs-reluctant-helicopter-flight-and-tragic-death/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 19:51:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565986 Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has shared details of the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah’s deep reservations about using helicopters, a mode of transport he boarded for the first time under the current administration, only days before the crash that claimed his life.

Dr. Boamah was among eight people who perished in the Sikaman helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.

The victims included Minister for Environment Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, Deputy NADMO Director-General Samuel Aboagye, and three military officers.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, August 11, Muntaka revealed that just a week before the fatal crash, he had a personal exchange with Dr Boamah about helicopter travel.

According to him, the President had urgently dispatched him to Tamale on official business, prompting him to request a military helicopter. In the process, he spoke with the Air Force commander, who was well aware of Dr Boamah’s discomfort with helicopters.

“The week before the incident, the President asked me to go to Tamale for something urgent. I called the Air Force commander and asked him to prepare the helicopter for the journey. Normally, if it’s over the weekend, we use it and afterwards document it for the records.”

Muntaka recalled that the request sparked a sharp response from the commander.

“He said, ‘Muntaka, I don’t know what is wrong with you. Why are you using this helicopter? I’ve told you I’m not comfortable with this; why not use the CASA?’”

The Minister said he questioned the logic of using a larger, more stable military aircraft capable of carrying over 40 passengers for a small team of two.

“I said it would be a waste,” he admitted. “But the late Defence Minister replied, ‘Your safety is more important than the cost you’re thinking about.’”

It was that same sentiment, Muntaka noted, that later led Dr Boamah to board a helicopter for the first time, a decision made reluctantly but with determination.

“But because of the fight against galamsey, he was ready to board the helicopter,” Muntaka said.

Despite his apprehension, Dr Boamah joined the mission in support of the government’s intensified crackdown on illegal mining.

“Despite all his reservations, despite the fact that he had never used it before, the first time he did, he never returned,” Muntaka lamented.

The Interior Minister said Dr Boamah’s commitment to the anti-galamsey campaign outweighed his personal fears.

“You understand why some of us are broken. You understand why we are devastated. We knew how uncomfortable he was with the heli; he made it clear. But he gave the President his word that he would give everything to this fight,” Muntaka concluded.

Why use national tragedy for self-promotion? Prof. Asante slams prophetic claims after helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/why-use-national-tragedy-for-self-promotion-prof-asante-slams-prophetic-claims-after-helicopter-crash/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 16:02:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565926 Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, former Chairman of Ghana’s National Peace Council and past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, has expressed deep concern over viral videos of some prophets claiming they foresaw the recent military helicopter crash.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Prof. Asante warned against exploiting national tragedies to showcase spiritual power or for personal gain.

“Someone’s tragedy should never be an opportunity to launch yourself or prove how powerful you are,” he said. “What is the motive behind these claims? The incident has already happened, and we must be very careful with such matters.”

He acknowledged that while the president may act on prophecies if he chooses, Ghana is a nation rich in diverse faiths and beliefs.

“You say it, then what? What did you do when you saw it?” Prof. Asante questioned. “The bottom line is, we have lost distinguished and hardworking people.”

Visibly emotional, he recalled the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, one of the crash victims and a devoted member of the Methodist Church.

“I remember seeing him at a couples’ event at Adum Methodist Church, where he even sang with his wife. My heart broke when I saw his picture and thought about how he died and how his remains were handled, kept in a sack,” he said solemnly.

The tragic crash, which claimed several lives including high-ranking government officials, has sparked national mourning and renewed discussions on the role of public prophecy in governance and society.
