The quarterly initiative, held at the Ringway branch in Accra, provided essential health consultations and free medication to support the retirees’ well-being.

First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama launched the initiative following a pledge she made during a church event in September 2024. The screening featured specialists including urologists, gynecologists, dietitians, opticians, and general practitioners.

Participants received laboratory tests covering key health indicators such as blood sugar levels, Hepatitis B, prostate health, and certain cancers. They were also given prescribed medications.

Speaking to attendees, Mrs. Mahama said the third edition builds on the successes of the first and second screenings held in November 2024 and March 2025. She urged retirees to take full advantage of the services and to follow their prescribed medications faithfully.

She said the initiative was part of the Lordina Foundation’s effort to support individuals who have dedicated their lives to service.

She also informed beneficiaries about the upcoming Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as “Mahama Cares,” and encouraged those with chronic non-communicable diseases to register when it becomes operational.

She explained that the fund is designed to cater to health needs not fully covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme and will offer preventive care at the community level.

Reverend Dr. Harry Insaidoo, President of the Assemblies of God Retired Ministers and Spouses Association, expressed gratitude.

“To us, it was one of the biggest and the most exciting moments for us, as every three months, the doctors will thoroughly examine you, and thereafter, they will give you medication,” he said. “Not only that, they will also offer pieces of advice on how to live a good and healthy life.”

He thanked both Mrs. Mahama and President John Mahama, who are members of the church, describing the intervention as enormous.

Mrs. Mahama also commended the dedicated medical team for their hard work and appreciated the leadership of the Assemblies of God Church, particularly Reverend Benjamin Teye Tettey, Head Pastor of the Ringway Gospel Centre, for graciously providing the venue for the quarterly clinics.

Lordina Foundation sponsors free health screening for retired pastors https://www.adomonline.com/lordina-foundation-sponsors-free-health-screening-for-retired-pastors/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 23:52:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2474033 Lordina Dramani Mahama has successfully organised the first free health screening programme for members of the Assemblies of God Retired Ministers and Spouses Association in Accra.

The programme, financed by the former First Lady through the Lordina Foundation, fulfils a September 14th pledge to organise a quarterly exercise for retired pastors of the church and their wives.

Services provided include laboratory tests for blood sugar levels, Hepatitis B, and prostate health. There were also medical consultations with urologists, gynaecologists, dietitians, opticians, and general practitioners.

The foundation provided free medications to those who were required to purchase drugs. Rev. Kwame Sarpong Boateng, a board member of the Lordina Foundation, said the initiative aims to alleviate concerns about the medical welfare of retired ministers and their spouses.

He highlighted some of the Foundation’s charitable initiatives, including regular support and donations to orphanages, widows, and the elderly, construction of maternity and children’s wards in three regions, provision of medical supplies to health facilities, assistance to artisans and other impactful social projects.

Rev. Sarpong Boateng commended Mrs Mahama for her thoughtfulness and innovative approach to addressing social challenges.

Dr. Padiki Derban, leader of the medical team, applauded the initiative, noting that some members of the Association may not be able to afford certain medications due to their high prices, making the initiative a timely and beneficial intervention.

Reverend Professor Kwesi Krereko, the immediate past president of the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, a beneficiary of the programme, said it provides a vital lifeline for retired ministers and their spouses. He believes that the programme will enhance healthcare for the members and extend their lives after active service in the ministry.

The association’s president, Reverend Dr Harry Insaidoo, was amazed at the thoroughness of the screening, adding that he did not anticipate such a detailed and comprehensive service.

“This kind of screening would cost a fortune if we had sought care at a medical facility. The prices for some of the medications provided for free at this event are very high. Receiving all these treatments and medications at no cost is incredibly heartwarming. It is a delight to see one of our own supporting the retired servants of the gospel,” he stated.

Reverend Dr Insaidoo explained that many members who are on pension struggle to afford their medications because of their high costs, making the Lordina Foundation initiative particularly divine.

Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama, who interacted with the medical team and the beneficiaries, expressed her excitement about the turnout and hoped that future events would be even more successful.

Cocoa farmers undergo health screening to mark Chocolate Day at Wawasua https://www.adomonline.com/cocoa-farmers-undergo-health-screening-to-mark-chocolate-day-at-wawasua/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 02:10:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2357012 Over 150 cocoa farmers at Wawasua and the surrounding communities in the Sunyani East Municipality of the Bono Region have undergone health screening as part of the celebration of Valentine’s Day, christened Chocolate Day in Ghana.

The day, climaxing the celebration of the National Chocolate Week, afforded the farmers the chance to be freely screened to know their health conditions in a collaborative exercise between Cocobod and the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) hospital in Sunyani.

The Administrator of Cocoabod in the region, Michael P.K. Asumanu, explained that the exercise is aimed at identifying diseases that affect cocoa farmers in cocoa-growing areas.

“We want to also drum home the need for everybody to consume cocoa products considering the enormous health benefits”, he said, and added that such a move ultimately benefits the farmer more.

Most of these farmers hardly visit the hospital to know their health conditions, mostly hidden, let alone seek treatment, a situation that affects their work as key stakeholders in the cocoa economy, hence the need to bring healthcare to their doorsteps.

They were screened for high blood pressure, sugar levels and body weight. There was also eye screening, all in a bid to ensure that their health conditions that are usually hidden do not escalate and put them at greater risk.

A nutritionist at the SDA hospital, Kwame Adu Twum, said beyond prescribing medications for the farmers, they also refer people whose cases warrant further attention to the hospital for further assessment and treatment.

“The good thing is, I am seeing elderly farmers above 40 years taking part in the screening, unlike the youth who are also entering the hypertensive and diabetic bracket.”

Mr Twum advised the people to see regular screening as an important way of safeguarding their health.

“I advise them to go for regular checkups, especially blood pressure which is free at the healthcare centres, to improve their health”.

The Cocobod Administrator, Mr Asumanu, revealed that they are in the process of fine-tuning the provision of medications for the farmers in future screening plans, as was done during last year’s exercise in Kumasi.

“The government has recently launched the cocoa farmer’s pension scheme as part of efforts to comprehensively care for cocoa farmers beyond producing cocoa”, he noted.

He said they would explore means to provide medications for a farmer identified as a diabetic patient.

A 59-year-old cocoa farmer at Korasua No1, Kwabena Nyarko, lamented the challenge of financing the prescribed drugs for his eyesight difficulties.

“If I don’t get a loan from anywhere, I can’t buy the drugs since I can’t afford it”, he said.

He appealed to the government to provide drugs for them in future screenings to mitigate the sufferings of the farmers.

“Without us being in good health, we can’t continue to produce the raw cocoa beans”, he stressed.

The Bono Regional Cocobod Extension Officer, Stephen Antwi Asamoah, recounted the worrying sentiments of some farmers over their inability to afford the outcome of their work, such as chocolate.

“Now that we can’t provide them chocolates, we are serving them with cocoa drinks with the hope of liaising with management to at least get the farmers chocolates on Valentine’s Day”, he said.

The climax of the Chocolate Week celebration also saw the exhibition of cocoa products, the outdooring of a cocoa shop to sell cocoa products any day at the cocoa house, and a quiz competition among some senior high schools in Sunyani.

Philipa Baafi’s “How Well Are You” free health screening and concert reach Dome Saturday https://www.adomonline.com/philipa-baafis-well-free-health-screening-concert-reach-dome-saturday/ Fri, 28 Jul 2017 06:53:05 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=337901 Residents, patrons and traders at Dome in the Ga East Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, will benefit from the “How Well Are You” health screening campaign by the popular musician and Physio Therapist, Philipa Baafi.
The Philipa Baafi Foundation is set to hit the Dome Market with the free health screening exercise.  The maiden edition of the health screening exercise took place at the West Hills Mall on the Accra-Kasoa road of the Ga South Constituency also in Accra.
Since the core objective of the foundation is to move the screening to the doors of every Ghanaian, there is the need to move to markets, where the bulk of the people congregate, hence the Dome Market.
The “How Well Are You” health screening seeks to address the health needs of women, who form 70% of the workforce in the informal sector.

“These sisters and mothers of ours eat every food and consume every medicine which is made available or offered to them. They do not exercise and hardly will they even visit the health facility for a checkup unless they fall sick and the situation is already chronic.
“Some sit under the scorching sun, in the rain and unhygienic environments for hours without walking. Some market women even sleep in markets with the aim of grabbing the first wears/goods/commodities early at dawn and they have made the markets their place of abode,” the gospel musician observed.
It is in line with these and many other reasons that the sensational Musician and ‘Occupational Therapist’, Philipa Baafi in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, recently launched the “How Well Are You” free health screening and health talk programme to cater for the health needs these market women and others across the country.

Aside the screening on Blood Pressure, Glucose/ Sugar level, Malaria and Body Mass Index (BMI) which are noted to be the common ailments among a number of market women, there will also be health talk for participants to know the need to embark on regular checkups and basic health tips that will enable them to stay away from sicknesses.
Philipa Baafi will also take centre stage and perform some of her popular tunes.

The Minister of State in charge of Procurement at the Presidency, Sarah Adwoa Safo who is also the Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya and Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, launched the maiden edition and she is expected to grace the second edition.
Supported by MTN, GOIL Ghana Limited, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals, Anadwo Ye De Mosquito Coil and Tinatette Herbal, the “How Well Are You” free health screening is expected to hit market after market across the country every month.

Dome is the nineteenth largest settlement in Ghana, in terms of population, with a population of 78,785 people. The Dome Market is a bulk breaking point for market produce from Ashanti and some parts of the Eastern region.
