In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show. Dwaso Nsem, Mr Konadu said the action is too harsh.

GES in the first week of first year Senior High School (SHS) students admission has interdicted 11 headteachers in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Bono Regions.

Despite a harmonised prospectus to cut down the financial burden on parents, these headteachers are said to be charging unauthorised fees and selling items in the schools.

Some of them have been accused of selling unauthorised items to students, including a ceremonial cloth priced at GH₵200, tracksuits at GH₵250, and other items.

Consequently, they have been asked to step aside to facilitate further investigations.

But Mr Konadu has asserted the headteachers probably charged the fees to make provision for items in short supply.

“GES should pull brakes on the interdiction because even though the headteachers have breached protocols, some of the schools lack supplies from government so such initiatives are sometimes to make up for these things. As a President of the Association, I’m involved in the running of the school and I know the challenges headteachers face in running the school,” he stated.

Mr Konadu further indicated that, Old Students in recent times have in several ways supported their alma mater but the onus lies on headteachers to put in place initiatives to ensure the smooth running of the schools.

GES speaks on fate of interdicted headteachers https://www.adomonline.com/ges-speaks-on-fate-of-interdicted-headteachers/ Mon, 11 Dec 2023 10:31:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2330482 The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it is possible some of the 11 interdicted Senior High School (SHS) headteachers will be reinstated.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, the Head of Public Relations at GES, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, stressed these headteachers breached administrative protocols.

However, they will be engaged in the course of investigations to know the basis for their actions to inform the next decision.

“Based on the recommendation that will come from management after the investigation, if there is the need to reinstate them,” she said.

Madam Ampofo emphasised the need for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence of such practices in the future.

GES following the commencement of admission process for first year SHS students has interdicted 11 headteachers of various SHSs.

The action is in connection with the collection of unauthorized fees from the students placed in their schools contrary to a directive from GES.

The outfit listed the unauthorised monies to include payments for sewn anniversary cloth, House dues, sale of books, sale of calculators, sale of anniversary cloth among others.

The affected headteachers are at Kumasi Girls, Asanteman, Kumasi, Manso Adubia, Agric Nzema Community, Nkawie and Collins SHS.

The rest are; Berekum SHS, O’Reilly, Odomaseman and GHANASS.

NAGRAT reacts to interdiction of SHS headteachers https://www.adomonline.com/nagrat-reacts-to-interdiction-of-shs-headteachers/ Sat, 09 Dec 2023 14:07:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2330112 The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has issued a strong warning to headteachers nationwide to comply with the government’s policy banning the sale of any items to students in schools.

This comes in the wake of the Ghana Education Service (GES) interdicting the headteachers of O’Reilly Senior High School (SHS) and Ghana Senior High School for alleged unauthorized activities.

Separate interdiction letters dated December 6th and 7th, 2023, were issued by the Regional Education Offices of Greater Accra and Eastern Regions to the respective headteachers.

Nadia Lartechoe Annan of O’Reilly SHS was suspended pending an investigation into unauthorized collection of admission fees, violating the school’s code of conduct.

Similarly, Patience Naki Mensah of Ghana Senior High School was interdicted for the unauthorized sale of ceremonial cloth, tracksuits, and other items to incoming Form One students.

On Friday, December 8, the GES interdicted two more headteachers, Mr. Afi Yaw Stephen, Headmaster of Berekum Senior High School and Mr. Joseph Jilinjeh Abudu, Headmaster of Odomaseman Senior High School.

They were both asked to step aside for selling unauthorised items to new students.

In an interview on Citi FM, Mr Carbonu emphasized: “Let me caution my colleagues and my senior colleagues if GES under the control of the Ministry of Education is giving out a policy indicating that no school should sell any item to students either within the school premises or outside the school premises, no officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES) should make him or herself a salesman or a saleswoman to sell any item to parents or students.”

He further noted that, while the rationale behind selling items might be valid, disregarding GES directives carries significant risk.

“Sometimes the reason these items are supposed to be sold is for very good reasons, mostly in the interest of the students themselves, but if the owner of the job, your employer has directed you not to sell why do you put yourself in harm’s way?

“You will just have to abide by that rule so that the consequences of that rule will be evident to the employer for the employer to rather amend its policy or maintain the policy” he stated.

Two more headteachers interdicted https://www.adomonline.com/two-more-headteachers-interdicted/ Fri, 08 Dec 2023 21:18:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2329993 The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted the headteachers of Odomaseman Senior High School(SHS) and Berekum SHS in the Bono region.

The interdiction of headteacher of Odomaseman SHS, Joseph Jinlejeh Abudu, according to GES is in connection with alleged charging of unauthorized fees and selling of items.

In the case of the Berekum SHS headteacher, Stephen Yaw Afi, he is allegedly charging unauthorized fees for certain items from first year students reporting to the school.

This was announced in statement which noted the interdiction took effect from Thursday, December 7, 2023, pending investigation into the allegations.

The letter has instructed Mr Afi to hand over all school property to the Municipal Director of Education, Berekum while Mr Abudu hands over to the Sunyani West, who will assume oversight responsibility during their absence.

This follows a similar action against the headteachers of O’Reilly Senior High School and Ghana SHS over allegations of the unauthorized sale of ceremonial cloth, tracksuits, and other items to Form One students reporting to the school.
